I was finally able to make a visit to this place. It's in a strip mall along with other businesses such as Kohls, Finesse Salon Studios and across from Publix Super Market. Theres plenty of parking and they have a small area for outside seating. As you walked in, there's plenty of seating, they have an open kitchen concept, a side room for special events or meetings (25 people capacity) but it's their mission that caught my interest as cashier/ hostess Lexi explains to me. This company spreads and provides charity catering throughout the community with multiple outlets. Lexi was very patient as she explains how the menu works. I ordered 3 items: 1) Loaded baked potato 2) Fried fish 3) Chicken and waffles. I just wanted to taste the baked potato without any protein on top. I don't know what it was that had an off taste, maybe the butter. The potato itself was soft topped with cheese, green onions and a little bland. The chicken and waffle were tasty. The fried chicken wasn't as crispy as I would like it but it was well seasoned and the waffle was soft. There are so many options for your sides. So for the fried fish, the appearance looks delicious but it was very thin and dry. Even with the tartar sauce it was still dry. I was really looking forward to it. The sides I selected were fries and hope cakes (which are sweet corn bread). Their beverages are on point, I got their lemonade and sweet tea. Lexi was attentive, knowledgeable and friendly. The restaurant is only opened on Fridays-Sundays for regular business but since they do multiple catering events, they are open 7 days a week. They also offer Sunday brunch between the hours of 9a-3p which the entire dining room is open with mocktail and coffee station. There isn't a buffet during the brunch but a la carte off the menu. I have been wanting to try this place out for a year now and finally had the opportunity. The service was good. The owners greeted my wife and I while we ate and shared their story bc purpose behind the restaurant. The cashier/server also shared the business' mission and story. From a leadership perspective this is extraordinary. The atmosphere was nice. They had a mix of music playing from Journey to Gospel music. And the food, really good. I ordered their waffle w scrambled eggs w cheese and grits. While the waffle was good, the Grits. Omg there were the best I've ever had. My wife who doesn't eat grits put some of mine on her fish. I should have gotten the shrimp and grits. Next time. My wife had the fish platter w collard greens. The fish was good, though there were a a couple of bones in it. The greens were ok to me however if you are looking for something more southern flavored w fatback or pork seasoned then the greens would be bland. Not a big proponent of sodium they were good to me if you add vinegar. For context I eat sautéed spinach w nothing added. Their Hope Corn bread if very very good. I can get behind any local business that gives back to its community, so y'all have my vote on that alone. The restaurant has southern style decor, and is a very open and welcoming space. It's clean, inviting, and well set up. You build your own meal; once you've picked what "bowl" you want from the menu, the friendly staff will put it together on a bowl/tray, and you'll pay before you sit down. Fountain drinks are available, but so are some bottled classics. I picked the Heroes Tray: - 2 Proteins: Sweet tea braised brisket, and pulled pork. - 2 Side Kicks: Braised collards, and dirty rice (seasoned creole style yellow rice) - it came with 2 Hope Cakes: I'm not the biggest fan of cornbread, but the hope cakes get my vote - 10/10! I'm not sure if the sauce I chose was homemade, but it was sweet and spicy, and 100% perfect for the pulled pork. The brisket didn't even need any sauce as it had its own flavor from the sweet tea it was braised in - absolutely delicious. In case you have the need for event space, why not choose HHSK's community room that can host up to 25 people, or, cater your home event with the delicious food offered here. They have provided meals for over 200k people that find themselves struggling for one reason or another. Providing hot meals for those that may not have the ability to cook. The husband and wife team/owners have a blessed mentality and spirit. Now my honest review. The restaurant was clean and spacious. I was greeted quickly and waited behind others as the menu was explained regarding the bowls, plates and choices to determine your meal. Samples were offered to us first timers, I did try a sample hope cake, a sweet dollar pancake sized piece of cornbread. It was light and fluffy and did not need any butter as it was sweet, it tasted very good. They were out of collards which I wanted to try but settled for the Mac and Cheese and Fries as sides, the pulled pork and braised beef (up charge) and two hope cakes completed my 'plate'. I dined in and missed the reason I was served in a to go container but decided not to ask again having overheard it told to the person in front of me. This may be why they were stingy on the fries, which were hot, crispy and well seasoned. The M and C was tasty and warm. The pulled pork was warm and had a slightly sweet taste, it was tender and in a decent portion. The braised beef was tender but mine was very fatty. I left as much fat in the container as I had meat. I enjoy my carbs and knew that two tiny hope cakes would not get me through my meal and ordered the additional 6 cheaper than they would have been at $1.25 a piece solo. They offered sauces but I didn't use them as I believe if you need to add sauce to make it taste good, it wasn't good. Overall, I enjoyed my meal. It was a tad pricey for the amount of food I received, even with the uncharged braised beef and extra hope cakes. I will attribute that to the cost of helping the community as they have done. First time at Hope Heroes this evening... Ordered the Heroes Feast to go. It comes with 3 large sides, 3 proteins, and 6 Hope cakes. I placed the order over the phone en route, and it was ready within 15 minutes for pick up. For those who haven't been there, this is located in the shopping center next to Kohls in Cosner's Corner. Upon entering to pick up our food, I noticed how spacious, open, and clean the restaurant is. The young ladies working the counter were friendly and polite. Our 3 large side choices were the Hoppin John black eyed peas, the collard greens, and the street corn, which is described as slow roasted corn in a creamy chipotle dressing with cilantro. Our protein choices were the braised beef, pulled pork, and the chicken wings. Our meats were in a foil roaster, along with our hope cakes, while our 3 large sides were in plastic containers with lids. Here are my thoughts on the food: -Braised beef was flavorful, moist and delicious. -Pulled pork was a bit dry. Hubby thought that it tasted like shredded chicken. Might have been good with a sauce. We weren't told about any sauces; whether they offer them or not, I don't know, and I forgot to ask. -Chicken wings are whole wings. I really enjoyed them; my husband thought that they were just okay. I expected more than just 2 wings with the feast however, so that was disappointing. Had I known that protein choice only comes with 2 wings, I likely would've chose differently. But still, they were very good! - Collards would've been great if they weren't so salty! I'm a salt person, and they were even a little too salty for me, which is saying a lot. My husband could barely get them down because of how heavily salted they were. -Hoppin John, I would order again. They were tasty! -Really enjoyed the street corn. -Was very much looking forward to the hope cakes. I could see the potential. However, they were packaged with the meat, and soaked up a lot of beef and pork juices, so they were soggy and falling apart. It's unfortunate. If I ordered again, I would request them to be packaged separately to avoid this issue. My overall impression: I love the cause, and what their mission is. Although I enjoyed the meal, it didn't leave the wow factor. It's unlikely I would visit again with other barbecue options in the area. But I wouldn't turn down a meal either. Y'all I stopped into the newly opened Hope Heroes Southern Kitchen here in Spotsylvania, VA. The mission behind the restaurant is quite admirable and one I can get behind. Get a bowl, give a bowl focused on tackling food insecurity. I love a good cause so I decided to stop in. This is also a Black owned establishment that we are happy to have here in Spotsy. My first impression upon entering was a good one - especially with that classic country music playing. Vibe instantly set for a good ole country experience. The restaurant itself is very clean and very cute, it gives you a modern farmhouse vibe with a mix of down-home. The person serving the food was super nice and helped me through the experience. This place is setup like a cafeteria/buffet style restaurant where you get a chance to create your own bowl with your choice of proteins and sides. There was a good amount to choose from but I chose to keep it simple and selected pulled pork and the "Hopping John" black eyed peas. All bowls come with a "Hope cake" which is their signature, I'd say it is a cross between cornbread and a pancake. I opted for the honey bourbon and low country kickin' sauces on the side of my bowl. I planned to take my food to go, but I noticed that there was only an option of foil to cover the bowl, and since I got my sauces on the side there was nothing to cover them. Since this is a new establishment, I'm sure there will be "to go" containers and lids available soon and I decided to just eat my food in the restaurant. After jamming to the tunes, I was able to dive into the meal. My pulled pork was very juicy and tender. The black eyed peas were good, and I got a generous portion. I was a fan of the hope cake as well. The two sauces "Honey Bourbon" and "Low Country Kickin" had a consistency of syrup, which I personally was not a fan of. I went on the 2nd day of opening and they did not have take out containers but used foil which worked. I ordered a drink before I realized they didn't have tops. I also believe there may have been an up charge on the brisket which I didn't see on the menu so I was surprised when my bowl, drink and banana pudding came to $21. I am so impressed with this place! The management, the staff, the food--all excellent! We were met at the door with smiles and I was given a rose (Mothers Day). The servings were generous. I had biscuits and gravy and my husband had shrimp and grits. I also had the blood orange mocktail which was interesting and delicious. Yesterday, July 21, was my first visit and the restaurant was not crowded, two tables of 3 people. I was greeted before entering and went to the counter and promptly told they had changed how the food is selected, everything is made to order and the wait would be 15 minutes after placing an order. The young lady at the register explained the bowl or tray choices and I selected the two protein tray with fried chicken and pulled pork, hoppin john and dirty rice. I paid and sat for 30 minutes. More customers visited but not one employee cane to acknowledge the delay. The employee that took my order at the register did come with a corn cake that was cold, and I then had to say to her, its been 30 minutes & you said 15. She apologized, stating they were slammed earlier and it was probably the chicken that was causing the delay and she asked if id like a drink. I did not and she repeatedly apologized and said she would check on my order. When she returned she said it was the chicken that was the holdup, but it wouldnt be much longer and offered additional corn cake or mac & cheese (which I didnt want) or collards (which she then said were being prepared but if they were done she could get me some, or a drink? I told her to decide and she said ok and left. 8 more minutes went by before she arrived with my order. I told her I wanted to check it before leaving and Im glad I did. There was a long hair on a corn cake, the pulled pork was scraps of meat, drowng in some wet juice, the chicken was drowning in that same juice and was not hot at all, but luke warm at best and now it was also soggy from that juice. The hoppin john looked good but the rice definitely wasnt durty rice and each serving was child size at best. I pointed out my issue with the tray and again, she apologized and took it. Additionally, there was no "extra" side. 6 minutes later, I checked, a young man returned with a different aluminum tray where everything had been placed in its own plastic container. Nothing had been replaced or reheated, nothing had changed, except there were now 4 corn cakes versus two (I don't know if they were replaced or the hair just removed) and everything was separated. I expressed how disappointed I was to the young man, after asking if he was the manager and him saying yes. I shared that changing the container does not resolve the issues. He said they were slammed earlier and tomorrow they would be restocked on everything and he kept apologizing but neve4 directly acknowledged my issues. I told him that being busy is understandable, but they should not serve what looks like scraps because its a bad look. He apologized, yet again, but never offered to change or replace anything. I took the food, arrived home and to say it was even good would be stretch. Only the hoppin john was good, IMO. The wings were hairy and even had 2 feathers and were cold (I live very close), the rice was plain old rice, nothing dirty about it with no flavor, and there were only 1.5 visible chunks of pork and the resr was not worthy of the title pulled pork, but more like pork dusting that were drowning in that super sweet "juice", not gravy, not drippings. I honestly can't say what it was, and it would not have filled one slice of white bread if I wanted a sandwich. It was baaaad. I feel like I gave Hope Heroes the opportunity, after the long wait, which totalled 53 minutes, but I wont go back, not for food that was mediocre in flavor, serving size and appearance. The fact that the young lady at the counter and the manager were apologetic was the only good point I can make. I wish them luck but Hope Heroes has to do better if they want repeat customers. Hope Heroes is Fredericksburg's newest quick-service eatery that has the friendliest service and simple comfort food with options for everyone-including vegetarians like myself! When I think, southern comfort food, I am usually disappointed because it seems to meat-centered and as a vegetarian, I am usually stuck eating a side of mac & cheese, because even the vegetables seem to have some kind of pork in it. That's not the case here! Not only are the majority of Hope Hero's sides vegetarian (all sides are except the hoppin John's!), they also have a vegetarian protein options: crispy tofu with sweet potatoes! Being able to get a balanced meal that includes a protein at a Southern restaurant already makes my day. Everything is tasty as well: it's nothing fancy, but it is comforting. The braised collard greens are not to be missed! Some of the best I've had, and it's impossible to find a place that does collards without ham/bacon. I like getting a bowl, and adding all of the free toppings that they offer at the end of the bar: coleslaw, corn, salad, and bean salad. On top of the food being great, the people behind the counter are so friendly. On my first visit, Esmeralda and Jane put together my order, and they were the sweetest ladies ever! We both had coffees but had to get up to add sugar and cream, and you still pay at the counter. We had some questions/issues with our meal but she didn't check on us until we were practically done. I had the cinnamon waffle, with a side of bacon and a side of fruit salad. The menu could use better descriptions, the waffle came with rosemary syrup which surprised me - I then realized it says that on the chicken and waffles but not the cinnamon one. My waffle also wasn't 100% prepared, like almost 1/4 of it was missing... The fruit salad was just diced watermelon and unfortunately I don't like watermelon so I ended up returning it. The bacon was crispy but I only got two slices for $6 which was a bit expensive in my opinion. There are no lids which was weird since the drinks are served in to-go cups. All the plate-ware and utensils are plastic but the food was kind of pricy which didn't make sense to me. My boyfriend got the shrimp and grits and it was like soup and bland, neither of us were impressed by it. I also have no idea how the restaurant is helping with food insecurity, we looked on their website and in the restaurant and there's no explanation as to how they're donating money to anyone. Service was okay, not great. Food took longer than expected considering only 2 tables in the restaurant and 5 people in the kitchen. They forgot one of our sides and one of our entrees. There was 4 of us 2 got shrimp and grits. One of the grits was the entree missed, grits were salty and gelatinous. The other two got the pork chops, they were okay a little salty and the breading was a little soggy and did not bind to the chop it just fell off. The extra sides we ordered were eggs over easy which were served as a round disc and well done. Bacon which was cooked prior to service and held on a hot line and was very very over done. Max and cheese which had two different tones to it you can tell it came from two different trays that were cooked at different times and one was much older and crusty. And potatoes was the final side, this was the side they forgot, they were greasy and pale with no color and no crispy texture. The atmosphere was great I loved the decor and the background of jazz music. We came because the other three people that were with me had come preciously before and raved about how great everything was. They said the service was pretty similar to last time(not great, but not terrible) but the food was unapologetically terrible this time and as a whole we left upset and disappointed. Someone did come to the table(who I think is the owner) and asked how things were my response was "ehh" and no one else said anything. We paid our bill and left. I am not looking for a hand out or anything of the sort, I just want to shine a light on an issues and hopefully it can be addressed and you will be the better for it because if the food continues down this route I worry for the future success of this business. I noticed a lot of things were being held and reheated or hot held which I get in certain cases but for the volume of business at the time we went there is no reason to not make everything to order. read more
