For those unfamiliar, the salmon croquette made its way into Southern cooking during the…read moreDepression, when poverty and pellagra were common. The latter, a horrible disease brought on by lack of protein, ran rampant among African Americans whose diets lacked it. In the 1920s, canned salmon could be had for pennies. Add an egg and you'd have enough protein to stave off the disease for a week. The inventive cooks in the Black community found ways to make it delicious, by adding chopped onion and binding it with the salmon liquor from the can and breadcrumbs. Like so many Southern dishes that arose from need, the salmon croquette has kept the spot it earned on the soul food roster. The salmon patty was a reputed favorite of author William Faulkner who was said to enjoy them quite a lot with liquor. (Or with quite a lot of liquor, I'm unsure which.) An excellent salmon patty can be had at Greg's Breakfast Bar. According to the sign on the front door, it's the best in Alabama, and I'll not dispute it. It's what I ordered on this most recent visit and although I've not personally sampled its rivals, it would be hard to imagine a better one. When I was a kid, my own mother--who grew up during the Depression--made them every Tuesday. (Greg's may be better. Sorry, Mom.) There's no liquor served at Greg's, so I had to eat my salmon croquette with coffee. For $10 at Greg's, you too can sample the best salmon croquette in Alabama. Other local faves like Conecuh sausage line the GBB menu. Eggs and grits accompany the breakfast plates, which make up the left half of the menu. Breakfast sandwiches occupy the other half. Greg's is open early (5:30 a.m. if memory serves), and stays open until lunchtime. When my travels take me through Montgomery--as they did last week on a drive from Pensacola to Atlanta--Greg's is a quick detour off of 65 or 85. I timed my drive accordingly. The interior is classic diner, vinyl and stainless . SEC memorabilia and signed player photos decorate the place. Everybody seems to know Greg. The crowd is local. Parking limited. Makes no difference. Park on the street.

I've run many trips to Montgomery Alabama, and I'm always looking another exciting way back to Mobile, mostly because Interstate 65 is some of the most boring road you'll ever drive, unless you're a big fan of trees. So I took a right turn I didn't intend and hit US 331 and found myself in a cute town called Highland Home, with "It Don't Matter Family Restaurant". I mean, with a name like that, how could I not stop?! So I parked on that very rainy afternoon, and went inside for something to eat. Now, this is exactly what you think of when you think of southern cooking. The menu was extensive and had everything you could want. Tables were spread out across the giant floor area, covered in table cloths. There is a buffet, for those with a large appetite. Very country, quaint and quiet. So I checked in on Yelp (Pro-tip: make sure you do this upon being seated). I perused the menu, and decided on the chicken dinner with mashed potatoes and fried okra. My waitress was friendly, and quickly took the order to the kitchen, and it arrived shortly after. This was a great choice! The chicken was juicy, and the breading was seasoned perfectly, the potatoes are the real deal, and the fried okra was some of the best I've ever had. The menu and the buffet were both full of choices, so I'm looking forward to going back and seeing what other southern culinary trouble I can get into.

Jazzy's Eats and Treats is a great place to have brunch, given breakfast and brunch is all this…read morerestaurant serves and that is all they have on the menu. This focus should and does translate into good results, but it is a work in progress. I came here with two friends and we were in agreement this is a great place for breakfast and brunch, but also in agreement their coffee and tea game could be stepped up. There are no real hot tea choices and the coffee is a bit on the weak side. There is also no iced tap water, only bottled water to pour over ice. They only charge a buck for the water, but it is a consideration. I ordered the shrimp and grits with a side of bacon, which I highly recommend. The grits have a creamy consistency aided with lots of cheese and butter, the latter of which is great for flavor, but could be restrained a bit. You are not here to count the calories. There are a decent number of shrimp atop, with proper Cajun seasoning befitting the eponymously named and New Orleans styled Jazz restaurant. The side of bacon, which came out in a caramelized semicrisp state, complimented the shrimp and added its own savory flavor to put it over the top for me. Jazzy's New Orleans underpinning was consistent in its flavor profile across all our dishes. The Cajun seasoning was evident in the Salmon Croquettes and the Fish and Grits my friends ordered. Everything received positive reviews, save for the pancakes one of my friends ordered on the side, which were considered mildly positive, and the Croquettes, which were a bit too heavily seasoned with the increased sodium content. Prices are reasonable and, after all is said and done, each person will come to about thirty bucks, including the tip, which is automatically charged at fifteen percent. Service was good, but this automatic gratuity charge is a practice I do not like and is reflected in my review rating, but do not let that dissuade you from coming here. 3.5 stars!

You can go down the checklist: Automatic gratuity sign on the front door, the grassy walls, and the steeply priced menu. As a matter of fact, when I looked at the prices at first glance, I almost got up and left because, again, this felt like a 'typical' Atlanta-lite brunch spot when I was visiting Montgomery. However, my experience and thoughts about Jazzy's would begin to shift right there. The waitress was very friendly and patient. I ordered the Big Breakfast with eggs, grits, potatoes and chicken wings. My guest ordered red velvet waffles and a breakfast skillet. It took quite a while, especially for the lack of patrons in the restaurant. However, when the food came, it more than solved and lingering issues I may have been pondering about Jazzy's. The food was amazing!!! The waffles and pancakes were delicious. The eggs and grits took me back to grandma's kitchen table. And the wings??? Come on Jazzy's y'all showed out with the wings. Everything was right on point. Also, I think it's important to note, the size of the portions given will more than make up for any potential pause given by the prices on the menu. If you are in Montgomery and in search of a brunch spot, HIT UP JAZZY'S you will NOT be disappointed.

I modified the BLT by removing the bacon and adding grilled chicken; that's a 10/10 as well. Let me just say, with the goat cheese, it was taken to a whole new level, and as you can see with the eggs Benedict no bacon on that, the grilled chicken will definitely be coming back for another 10/10. I was very surprised by this spot. The staff, of course, was busy with the after-church crowd, but they did a great job seating us. While here I tried the shrimp and grits, 3 meat omelet, and the chicken and waffle sliders. Hands down the shrimp and grits may be the best I've ever had. I appreciated that the sauce was not oily and they give a good amount of shrimp and conecuh sausage (this specific sausage is the key) for the amount of grits they give you. This may be the best shrimp and grits I've ever had so if you don't know what to order, you can't go wrong with this choice. The 3 meat omelet was bomb as well with plenty of meat inside the omelet with a choice of side. Lastly, the chicken and waffle sliders were also really good. The chicken is crispy and the hot honey sauce it comes with naturally motivates you to dip the chicken into the syrup (thank me later if this didn't cross your mind until now). I can't forget the sweet tea is very sweet and when you ask for a side of lemons, they actually cut a lemon up for you which I appreciate from a sanitary standpoint. In case you were also wondering, they offer military discounts and they will sing happy birthday if you ask (no free dessert but they do have some really good beignets to purchase). The beignets are really soft and go great with the ganauche. The only downside for this restaurant is the service is a bit slow. Both days it took quite a bit of time to be greeted by a server and sometimes they take a while to come by your table. This is a minor fix but if this can be rectified this is easily a 5 star brunch place that the city needed. I recommend this restaurant to anyone considering coming to it and I look forward to coming back to eat here (my mom still talks about the shrimp and grits lol).
