Ugh I hate that this is a convenient lunch spot... My level of disappointment sinks like the titanic every time I go and try something. I mean look...it's fine, don't get me wrong but the prices are high for what you get and I feel like I need an advanced degree in city planning to navigate the sandwich ordering line. I'm kind of surprised that Wagshal's only has a 2-3 star rating on Yelp, but if it means it will stay less crowded, then I'm fine with it. I discovered Wagshal's sometime last spring and have been back on a more-or-less weekly basis since then. I'll lay out the few negatives, IMO. The ordering process is kind of counter-intuitive, the flow of traffic around the hot bar and ordering counter can be awkward, and the menus aren't very clear--there are a lot of options that aren't on the posted menu or well-advertised at all, but that just means there's more to discover. The many positives: the prices are great. Maybe if you've just moved to DC from the South or Midwest, $8 for a sandwich seems high, but this is an expensive city and the deals are pretty good for the sandwiches, breakfasts, and pastries. The service has always been friendly, and I've been nothing but impressed with all the food from here. I especially love the cinnamon rolls, prosciutto panino, and Cuban sandwich. read more

The food is good, if a bit pricey. They use high quality ingredients. My issue is the organization of the space and the slow service. People seem to have figured out the lunch system, but at dinner it's very confusing for diners and, apparently, servers as well. They try to get you to sit down to eat, and they try to replicate a regular restaurant dining experience; but once you are seated they forget all about you. I've eaten dinner there a couple of times now, and each time I've had to go up to the counter to remind the staff that I was there. I'll keep going, because the food is good, but I expect I'll always be baffled by the service. read more

I had ok service, the sandwich was good, the portion was generous (not huge) and at $8 a good value compared to other delis where the same might be $13 to $15. I visited Wagshals (New Mexico Ave location) today at lunch, ordered a smoked turkey sandwich with a few condiments. The turkey was dry, condiments were wrong and the service was slow. Clearly the worst $12 sandwich that I've ever had. Will never go here again, so many better options within 5-10 minutes. read more

I was very excited to eat here because of the bottomless mimosas and the vegan item on the menu.  I saw they had listed a vegan ramen dish.  Regrettably, they were out of the vegan ramen, so I settled on the Wagshal's breakfast.  The meal come with 2 scrambled eggs, potatoes, English muffin and bacon.  It was really good!  I enjoyed it, it was a great brunch option and dairy free.  The restaurant was conveniently located close to American University so we were able to head over to the graduation ceremony quickly. read more

We are avid customers at Wagshal's. Getting used to the high prices in DC is unfortunate and Wagshal's is, by no means, an exception. The sandwiches are delicious and there are different options like chicken liver and beef tongue. And, if you're willing to throw down, we absolutely recommend the french fries. Also, look to the bottom of the fridge for fresh squeezed juices and lemonade--very refreshing! The quality of food and quality of service are, generally, exceptional. Though, we did have one incident here when the individual taking our order got frustrated (we had a few adjustments to sandwiches, i.e. additions of mayo, substituting cheeses, etc) and began making snarky, rude comments. So, Wagshal's gets three stars. It does taste good, but the prices for a sandwich are kind of ridiculous. We'll be back either way. PS- If you have time, take a walk to the other side of the store for some gourmet foodstuffs and brews! read more

First off. Great sandwiches. Second off, the worst customer service I've experienced in quite some time. Up until today, I have bought sandwiches here at least twice a week for the last 6 months. I ordered an Italian cold cut today. Didnt look at my reciept (I guess my bad). They proceeded to charge me 55.00$. Then I realized what was going on. After the whole shit show of trying reimburse me my money. They then had to charge me for my actual sandwich. I'm no one to EVER except something for free. I'm very prideful. But after that whole experience they should have compd my sandwich. 10 people working back there and no one could figure out what was goin on. Very bummed out. read more

When I contacted Impossible Burger to ask how this was possible, they reported that Wagshals is NOT AUTHORIZED TO SELL the product and that therefore the company has no control over pricing. I had a really terrible customer service experience here. When I came in the store I saw a few chalkboards on the counter advertising 10% off all raw meat and seafood. So I went to the butcher case and ordered a few things. On a piece of steak, the guy working the counter rang it up at $18.99/lb instead of the $14.99/lb listed on the price tag. When I pointed this out to him, his reaction wasn't to fix the price, but to tell me, "well, I put in flank steak and $18.99/lb is what's in the system." I repeated that they had it listed as $14.99/lb, and after reaching into the case to check the tag, he begrudgingly agreed to ring it up at the listed price. Then at the register, after I paid for the steak and a couple of other things, I looked at the receipt and realized I hadn't gotten the advertised 10% off. I told the guy at the register this, and his response was "oh no, we're not doing that promotion anymore." I told him they still had it posted, and he challenged me, "where?" I pointed out multiple chalkboards with the promotion advertised, and he told me, "well, it's not in the system so I can't give you the discount." I asked if he really wasn't going to honor a promotion that was still being advertised in the store, and he made a big show of opening the register and counting out in cash the few dollars to make up the 10%. It was just a few bucks, but I was really put off by back-to-back interactions in which I was only asking staff to honor the prices and promotions that they were advertised in the store, and the response was to argue with me and treat me like I was being unreasonable, instead of admitting the mistakes and making it right. read more

Unfortunately, I have to agree with many of the negative reviews. The layout of the place is confusing even though the staff is friendly and will point you in the right direction. I had a panini the first time there, which was middling. The second time I got the crabcake sandwich and it was downright bland. Very disappointing. Its grocery section is overpriced and provided me with the absolute worst Parmesan cheese I've ever had. A POOR substitute for Balducci's. I so badly wanted to like this place. I have lived close-by for over a decade and used to go to the Balducci's that occupied the same space. I have also gone to the Wagshal's in Spring Valley occasionally, though find the prices to be high and the wait to be a little long for my liking. The thing that makes the Wagshal's Market a destination for me is the crab cakes. I love them! It seems like they tried to combine the Wagshal's Market and Deli in Spring Valley into one space on New Mexico Ave., but it was not a successful transition. I brought my daughter in to check it out. Granted, I tried only one thing, but got the complete lay of the land by looking through the full selection of produce, frozen items, refrigerated items, and the deli menu. I was hoping that in a larger space, the selection would be more extensive. This is not the case. There seems to be a limited sandwich menu and you have to wait for what you purchase. As another reviewer put it: why not have more grab and go items? In the market, there seem to be fewer items than in both the deli and the market in Spring Valley. I was really hoping for more. In our first (and likely only) visit, we purchased an afternoon treat: gelato. I lived in Florence very near to some of the best gelato shops in the world, so I admit I am a bit particular about gelato. The gelato and sorbet selection was mediocre, at best. There were only six flavors (all proudly displayed above the counter). When I asked the man scooping gelato if I could purchase it with him, he told me I had to go to another counter. When I went to that counter, they told me to go to the gelato counter. I purchased two flavors. They had small-ish containers and only one size and one price. No cones, no one scoop/two scoop options. There were also no prices listed. It was a treat, but I was quite surprised that it was almost $11 for two small containers of mediocre gelato. I will not be stopping for gelato again and I am not sure I will shop there again for any other reason. It seems like a waste to have such prime real estate taken up by a very expensive store that isn't that great. read more

Finally, another lunch option near my office! I'd actually rate my experience a 3.5, but I'm rounding up because I'm so grateful to have a new lunch option nearby. First, the space is really nice. They have some great options at the butcher counter, which I thoroughly enjoyed ogling for a bit. Prices looked fairly reasonable for the quality, and I'll definitely be back to do some shopping. On the cafe side, they really need to work on the setup. They have some grab and go sandwiches, but they're piled right by where you place your orders, so you still need to wait in the line to order to get to them. They have a pickle bar as well, which is amazing, but that's set up right in what ends up being the middle of the sandwich line during the lunch rush. Anyway, once you order, they give you a receipt, then you stand in a separate line(s?) to pay. There were apparently two lines, which was unclear at first, and you had people ordering from the bakery, the sandwich line, and the butcher all feeding into them, and it was a bit chaotic. After you pay, you wait for your number to be called, and that was also a bit chaotic, as people didn't know where to stand, and employees seemed annoyed that they were having trouble finding people, and there seemed to be some disagreement amongst them as to where customers should wait. So, given all these kinks, why the four stars? After I finally got my food, it was delicious. The turkey was freshly sliced, the chopped chicken liver was just like my mom used to make, and the sweet horseradish pickle slices provided a perfect contrast to the creamy chicken liver. The spinach knish I got for later was also really good. My colleague seemed quite happy with her reuben, which looked amazing, and which I need to try next time, as I'm always on the lookout for a good reuben. So although they definitely have some kinks to work out, I can definitely see this becoming my favorite lunch spot. I just hope they're able to speed things up a bit once they've been open longer, because as of right now, they're only a viable option on really quiet days at the office. read more

Three stars only because there aren't many options for the people that work on the same strip. The setup is really stupid and confusing to people who dont pay attention... So, most of their customers don't seem to get it causing the place to run like a madhouse some days. It's tough for me on a lunch break having to get in and out. Inconsistent service and food. For example, I used to love the BBQ pulled pork sandwich until on several occasions the meat was too tough, almost hard, like it was old and/or recooked. The hot bar is pretty good because of the variety. Soups are always delicious. The cashiers are generally nice, but this one guy is an ass. Second example, I am always eating to go so the lady-cashiers ask if I need utensils as they do everyone else. This guy didn't offer, so I asked. It took everything in me not to correct his smart self for pointing to the back of the restaurant to get my own utensils. Like what a jerk. Never had that happen. He totally should not be at the register and I doubt I trust someone with a bad attitude as a cook either. Every time I see him he treats people the same despite how busy or slow they are. The guys that bring the meals to the tables can be annoying too. They are not restaurant quality either... They will totally cut you off and bump into you without a sorry or "pardon." I really wanted to like this place since I've successfully used Wagshall's for catering in the past, and thought the area could use a casual, not so expensive option (similar to the very successful Jettie's in Foxhall). I was greatly dissapointed. We ordered the cuban and the crabcake sadwiches. The Cuban was stuffed with lots of bland fatty meat, and the crabcake was all filler and little taste. I can assure you - this scam grocery store charges wildly reckless prices. They opened up in a tony zip code...and they expect we are all stupid as bricks, and will pay whatever the fuck they ask. Fact is, and this will blow your mind - you could SAVE money - by going out to dinner at Ruth's Chris, Morton's, the Palm, or Smith and Wollensky. Add to that, the horrible staff. They act like - 'You are so fucking lucky you are here.' Ugh. Bad looking food. Price gouging. Horrid staff. Do us all a favor in Glover Park: clear out and leave. This restaurant sits within a small complex of other eateries, in a fairly suburban community. If I didn't know any better I'd say the climate is a little pretentious. The food was tasty. I ordered very basis because I didn't want to be lured into spending too much for nothing much. I ate a sweet potato soup and chicken salad. Both items were yummy and my meal was under $6.00 so I was overall happy with having flexibility to order this way. I might be back if ever in this part of town. Went to check it out yesterday with the kids. Looks great. Very good use of space for sandwiches, bakery, etc. Came for seafood but that and the butcher shop wee not yet open. What made the experience was when I asked for parking validation despite not buying anything. Manager said no problem and validated...smart move! Immediately went to their Mass. Ave. location and spent $85 on Salmon and a few odds and ends. Look forward to visiting new location again when it is completley up and running. read more

My husband loves this place, but despite my 30 + tries of it, I am constantly disappointed. Went to the new location today, and I'm unclear of why they didn't come up with a better ordering system after the circus that is their Spring Valley store. Today, I got a chicken salad sandwich, which I considered to be a foolproof choice. They messed up my very basic order which they do I would say 80% of the time, although it was empty. Drove the 3 minutes home, and my sandwich was already a heaping, sloppy mess. The bread fell apart as soon as I took it out of the wrapper. There were giant chunks of dry chicken which could work [better] on a bed of greens, but not at all for a sandwich. Mayonnaise everywhere. Had no taste or seasoning. It was not cheap. I hate this place. Also, whatever you do, don't get the turkey stuffing thingee. It's inedible. read more

We have been to the Spring Valley location and we're already a fan of their quality meats and seafood--but this location is in our neighborhood and we are thrilled! It's certainly not the most well designed space, and yes during lunch rush it takes a while to get your food, but the sandwiches here is great! The staff is helpful, and the space is clean. It may take some more time for them to get me up to 5 stars, but I'm confident they'll do it. As for the selection, this place has every sandwich I've had at the other Waghshall's (I've even order the superior, which isn't listed on the menu, but you can still get). Wagshal's is a great choice for a meal or snack at any time of the day. It is a great option for students studying in the area as it offers premium service, great prices and accepts University Dollars as payment. There are many student servers, which is great to see. I always support hiring young students, as they always bring delightful conversation and premium service. The variety of food options are diverse. I recommend the any of the sandwiches, or the hearty burger which is sufficient for event the most voracious eater. read more

Just had an amazing experience eating dinner at this place! We ordered the 1/2 roasted chicken (the skin was incredible!!) and a gyro. Our beers were 3.49 each! Wagshal's attempted to overcharge me by over $5, and chastised me when I brought this matter to their attention. I wanted a better experience, but the management refused to give it to me. If you want something to be $13, then list its price as $13. I would have bought the item for $13 if you had been honest and forthright about its price. I placed my order based on a paper menu Wagshal's provided to its customers at the spot where orders are placed. However, once I received my receipt I noticed something was odd because it looked more expensive than what I had expected. With a paper menu in hand, I asked the cashier about the pricing and was told that the appropriate price was what I had been charged. I disputed this and asked to speak to a manager. The manager told me that the menus were old and outdated, and the appropriate prices could be found on the electronic screens. Guess what: the screens were either turned off or broken, and the company's own website reflects the price that was on the paper menu. The manager's refusal to grant me the price advertised on its own materials in-house felt deceitful. What was more suspect was the act of the manager returning the paper menu back to its original spot, despite me bringing the price discrepancy to her attention. Really cool mix between market, restaurant, and sandwich counter. I had the Reuben and it was easily one of the best Reuben's I've had in DC - Meaty, tasty and a ton of sauerkraut. Add a bit more meat and it would probably be my fav. However, had to give this place a 4 due to price. The sandy was $10.99 and it didn't come with anything but a pickle. That's too rich for me to make this a routine stop, just a once in the while treat. read more
