My experience at Wagshal's was exquisite, particularly because of the expert serving and gracious hosting provided by the student staff. I love seeing establishments hiring young people and teaching them such great hospitality, something that I thought was lost in their generation. I would highly recommend that you engage in conversation with the younger workers, who remained attentive to my needs while providing fascinating stories about their experiences. The convenience of this store from where I live is great and really the only reason I still come here. I was so exciting when it opened but the service is pretty poor. It can take so long to get checked out for one item even when the store is close to empty. Checkout process is very poorly organized and if you try to follow the signs and wait in line as directed you will never get checked out. Could really use some redesign but mostly customer service training. read more

Not sure what has happened to Wagshal's over the years. They advertise it as a family business since the 1920s; possibly, the next generation has taken over, and they are going for a $$$ grab. Quality is TERRIBLE; prices are raised constantly, especially within the last year. The Spring Valley location is filthy. I used to go to Wagshal's 3x a week. Now, I go maybe once a month, and am constantly amazed at price increases, subtle surliness from employees, disdain for the customer, etc. It reminds me of when I used to take my German car to get repairs: You get punched in the face, and then they say "that will be $2,500." Wagshal's is saying to its customers: "Let's see how much we can charge, and they will pay............." Well, after 30 years of buying German cars, I no longer do. Looks like Wagshal's is heading in that direction. Wagshal's will not miss me, but trends do have a way of happening. read more

Update: Their food has declined over the past few months (particularly at the hot bar). Veggies are either overcooked or under cooked, no seasoning, bland and boring. The meat is always overcooked, fatty, and unpleasant. I recently had the Vegan Ramen soup they offer. Still heavy-handed with the onions, and the noodles were starchy. The mushroom broth was delicious, but everything else made it practically inedible. The food is mostly pretty good. However, they are VERY heavy handed with onions in everything... I learned to never order anything with onion and pick them out of a pre-made salad. The Matzo Ball soup is the best. Slightly overpriced, but expected. read more

Great food, great service. I've read some of the reviews here that say the employees are rude. Not my experience in the slightest. Almost every employee has been helpful and nice. The place is a little bit expensive, but of course you are going to pay a premium for deli-made sandwiches. If you don't like it, buy pre-made sandwiches at a grocery store. I haven't had a sandwich yet that I didn't like. Their fries are crispy and well-seasoned. In addition, their hot food station and soup stations are top-notch. If you're looking for dessert, they have pretty good gelato and some very good desserts. They also make an absolutely heavenly waffle on the weekends. I highly recommend Wagshals for anyone interested in good food. I give this place a 4.5 (rounded up to 5). read more

What's with all the haters? I live nearby to this new location and I am currently a graduate student who takes late classes, but Wagshal's is always on my way home. The staff members are great. They know my name and make me feel at home every time I go in. They are honest about the food, have no problem admitting mistakes, and do their best to keep the lines moving. I get that on the weekends when they are busy things get hectic, but people need to learn to read the signs. IT IS CLEARLY MARKED WHERE TO STAND TO PAY!!!! You go along the counter to order, around to the drinks and stand in front of the little monitor that tells you which register to go to (it even has a diagram for people who aren't familiar with the system). Not only that but when the employees try to keep order and help out new customers, they are just doing their job and no need to get snippy with them. The expansion to a half service restaurant has been a rough go, but now they offer breakfasts, lunch, and dinner options as well as serving the area by offering specialty goods and meat and deli counter in the neighborhood. The waffles are delicious, the sandwiches rock (great selection too), the small plates and family meals are good as far my experience. Whenever my friends are talking about where to get lunch, we just stop and all say "Wagshal's". So 'I gave it a 5 out of 5 because I can't give it the 4.5 I wish I could. Yes my complaint is that the prices are slightly above the mark, but I ok with that for quality of ingredients and friendly people. People need to calm down. Opening restaurant locations is tough, and these guys had a reputation to live up to. It was difficult enough without delays and loyal customers clamoring about the late opening. There are very few restaurant options in this area, so I was pleased that Wagshal's opened a new location near my office. Having eaten at the Spring Valley location, I was anticipating the food to be a little better than average. If I didn't work in the area, it certainly wouldn't be a destination place, but again, convenience is key with limited options. Regardless, in the week and a half it has been open, I've purchased lunch there three times and made one bakery purchase. Today, I made what will be my final purchase, entirely due to miserable customer service. As explained by reviewer AllysonP, the setup is disorganized and chaotic. The service area where you place salad and sandwich orders is stanchioned but lacks signage. The staff member who takes your order doesn't direct you where to pay, and when you do find the counter pay stations, there is no clearly designated line. Also, people purchasing only gelato, bakery, or grocery items pay at the same counter, so the groups mingle together and no one seems to know where they're supposed to go. Mixed in with these groups are those who have already paid and are waiting to pick up their deli orders. They, too, cluster around the counters. I assumed the poor crowd control was due to Wagshal's soft-opening, but honestly, any experienced restaurant or grocery store owner should know that space planning and signage is an essential component in designing a customer-centered establishment. Having been in the business for years, Wagshal's owner and management should have prioritized the navigational flow as much as they did the aesthetics. Today's experience was particularly bad, due to the owner's rude responses. When I proceeded to the counter to pay for my sandwich, I walked past him. He appeared to be talking to two women. He yelled, "Hey, where are you going?" I replied, "To pay for my order." Pointing, he said, "The line's back here," as though it should have been obvious. It wasn't--especially since the prior four times I had visited, there were no directional lines, no signage, and certainly, no clear system for paying and pick-ups. Fine. Again, I credited this new rule to their soft-opening. While I waited, I asked him if there were any plans to add signage and improve the process, because every time I had been in, there seemed to be a lot of customer confusion. I was smiling when I said this. His gruff response was, "No, that's what I'm for," and he followed up with "It's a new system. People will get used to it." Evidently, Wagshal's DOES have a navigational system, except, the customers don't know what it is. Clever. Further, I suggested that signage may assist the hard of hearing and elderly find their way around (the adjacent Foxhall building houses hearing aid providers as well as many doctors' offices, serving those demographics), particularly since they may have a harder time hearing order numbers being called and/or being yelled at by spiteful owners. He said, "It's okay." And I said, "but it will make it more accessible to customers." He honestly smirked, made a "pft" sound, and said, "It's okay." Conversation over. When I told my accompanying coworker, who had ordered ahead of me, what had happened, I was told that the owner had just yelled at some other customers, again, over the confusion about how to pay and where to wait. Unfortunately, people will keep going, because there is little competition, and perhaps, people in this area have become accepting of poor service. I'd rather take my business to Tenleytown or one of the other AU Park restaurants. read more

Like Elizabeth B said below, the staff starts to shut stuff down well before closing, and they have a horrible attitude if you try to actually buy something and it is close to closing time. I live basically next door to Wagshals, and I've tried very hard to become a regular customer, despite the high prices, because it is convenient. But I just can't justify giving them my money any more - they don't really want my business, and it shows. read more

Ordered their famous brisket sandwich but what's famous about a $15 dollar sandwich full of fat. Every bite was half meat/ half fat. For the price why not make sure to discard the fat before preparing it? Neighborhood place only.. Not somewhere to go out of your way to experience. read more

Gee, I feel bad giving them a low score because apparently they listened to the others below about the customer service, but I can't say the sandwiches were even mediocre. Years ago I would go to the Wagshals deli in Spring Valley, but stopped about 5 years ago when it went too far down hill. I thought this may have been a recovery of sorts. I am watching calories and this was going to be a little splurge--an actual sandwich---big, important hopes! When I looked at the menu, I suggested to my husband that maybe we ought to have a delicious and reliable $5 bean burger at Chef Geoff's next door. He was afraid that would be too heavy---so while I sadly muddled through my highly unremarkable baguette half sandwich(it was a full sandwich--I just couldn't do the other half), I gave a good old "I told you we should have had the bean burger :-). I then noted that I was sad it wasn't Subway. I think Subway is pretty good for what it is--cheap, fast---but Wagshal's sells itself as gourmet. The price wasn't crazy---but it was for what we received. I guess it was more like Booeymonger, where I stopped eating years ago--but Booey might even be better. I don't think I am being overly critical (?)--the folks near us had a problem and we saw another woman throw away half of her sandwich. It's a beautiful space, but everything below is true about the chaos and constantly having to ask other customers "excuse me." Not because it was overly packed. They are definitely making an effort on the customer service, but sadly they seem to have missed the boat on the upgrade in sandwiches in DC. It's like they haven't scoped out the competition: Stachowski's for an italian (the sandwiches don't need to be as big, but they need to match them on quality ingredients), Bub and Pops (very high quality ingredients and their son is a chef running the kitchen plus warm service) and the very nearby Jetties--in 2 directions-- for roast turkey, the simple Cafe Phillips around downtown, Sundevich, Devon & Blakeley...I am not sure where to stop. My guess is that they don't have a recently trained chef--or no chef---involved in the sandwiches. It's not really necessary---you just need to be creative and buy quality ingredients. Also Yelp "sandwich" in DC and sort by popularity. $19 dollars, hungry and wasted calories. I won't be back until they revamp their sandwiches and the reviews here reflect it. We needed this in the neighborhood, it just isn't it. I find parts of Chef Geoff's menu unremarkable(stone pies) but he has consistency and high quality ingredients-- I wish he won the space here because I think he planned the same thing---gourmet grocer/butcher/sandwiches. I think he was trying to get it and lost out to Wagshals. Thanks to whomever decided that. I really hope Wagshal's steps up its game---at least 2-3 steps. The butcher side looked good, but it's so pricey that I'd probably go to Whole Foods where I can rely on them Wagshal's---you have a chance to improve and people really want you to succeed---but it's probably a short window. It sounds like you are trying with customer service, but the sandwiches need a total revamp. read more

This is all about the customer service. I have been going to wagshals for years and love the food. However today when I went to get breakfast(on Saturday) I wanted a bacon egg and cheese bagel. The microwave their eggs for their bacon egg and cheese bagels but not for their omlettes, those they cook fresh on the flat top. I asked for them to do the same with my bagel but they refused. It wasn't busy no one on line but would not accommodate a simple request on top of that the lady gave me attitude. read more

If there were more choices to eat on New Mexico Ave, I would never frequent this place again, but the restaurants here do not have as fast of service as Wagshal's. The food is fast, but it's crap. Everything is overpriced and every time I make a purchase (even with my usual items I like to purchase), it varies depending on who is taking your order that day. They have one manager in particular who is very rude and it seems the employees are more concerned with socializing than actually working. Oh and don't ask for extra ketchup! What pissed me off today was I went in to purchase some French Fries. They gave me two packets of ketchup. I asked for extra ketchup and I am bought two packets of ketchup. Is ketchup really that expensive that you are that stingy with it? It's hard to believe that this Wagshal's on New Mexico Ave is owned by the same people who own the Wagshal's on Massachusetts Ave. Two totally different environments when it comes to employees and service. read more

We always try to support local businesses, but this place needs to go back to the drawing board. On 2 occasions - weekday, not busy evenings - service was so slow as to be laughable - even with what appeared to be ample staff! Food portions are nothing to rave about but, worse, the chicken dishes we ordered recently were barely edible. Tough and overcooked. French fries were obviously left over from hours earlier and just awful. All this for premium prices, a confusing ordering system, non-English-speaking staff, and less-than-helpful counter clerks. But their layout is terrible - you can choose to follow the plan and stand in the register line, then watch old entitled dinosaurs walk straight up to the register and get served before you, or be an asshole and cut everyone (if you'd like to get out of the register line in any sort of timely fashion). The King's Favorite, meatballs of ... beef, veal...pork, served with ...sauce of lemon and capers -- INEDIBLE. Although salt was not listed as an ingredient,, the combination of bacon, anchovies, and capers made the dish unbelievably salty. read more

I give up. I work in the building that Wagshal's on New Mexico is located in Wesley Heights, DC. I go there often by default because it is one of the only places to grab lunch without getting in my car. I am consistently disappointed. The level of inconsistency in the salads, deli meats, chicken salad, sandwiches, etc. is unbelievable. It is almost as if the management just doesn't care at all. The grilled chicken on the salads (which typically end up costing about 11-12 dollars) 4 out of 5 times has this terrible raw and rubbery texture - you have to spit it out. The sandwiches are either amazing and perfect or appear to be assembled by a kindergartner - depending on the day. I had the chicken Caesar panini once and the spinach wasn't washed. I had sand/dirt in my sandwich. They have a monopoly on people like me who sometimes have 5 minutes to grab lunch and only go because it's right there, right beneath their office, which is very unfortunate. Consistency deserves loyal customers and this is the one thing they have no idea about. Even their soups are inconsistent and sometimes are cold and taste terrible. There was raw diced bacon in the chicken noodle soup a couple weeks ago. I wrote an email to the manager a couple months ago very politely explaining my complaints. I received no reply after a week, so I resent my email to him. 3 days later I received a lukewarm email that basically just said they would try better. Well, the word is out there in my firm... by no effort of my own - EVERYONE has had bad experiences there. It's just common knowledge in my office building about how poor the quality is there. I usually read these reviews and roll my eyes... thinking, who is this guy? - he must not have better things to do. I don't have time and many better things to do; but after countless bad experiences and wasted money, I had to make my first ever negative yelp review. There are two cashiers who are the silver lining to the store. One is Marvin - he is a gentleman and always goes above and beyond. There also is another woman with dark hair and as wonderful/friendly/helpful as Marvin. I feel bad for not knowing her name. There are also other people in the store who are really great. Dropped in 30 minutes before closing and the place was fairly empty, BUT, the service was friendly and efficient, the shrimp cocktail was excellent, the veggies were crisp, fresh, and perfectly cooked, and the pizza was excellent! This Wagshal's has potential to fill a great need in this area of DC. On the plus side they have good sandwiches, pre-made and to order salads, bakery items, gelato, lots of outdoor seating and a selection of deli, produce and gourmet grocery items. Unfortunately, after being open for nearly a week, the ordering process is still confusing, no paper menus are available, no menus are posted in the windows, none of the bakery or grocery items are labeled with prices and there is only one size available for gelato which costs $4. Several of the employees are circulating trying to call out orders and steer customers but I can't help but think that things would be sped up with signs and clear labeling. One of my co-workers went over for lunch yesterday and was asked by an employee if the wanted to wait more or less than 15 minutes. When they said less he replied that they should go to McDonald's... I would not return to this establishment until they can handle the lunch rush. read more

This is an excellent deli, butchery and an organic foods heaven. I like the fact that they carry Amish meats and eggs. Deserts look fantastic. I am used to European deserts with fluffy creams and soft breading but this is not exactly to the par. Breading in the cakes is a bit too hard. Too much baking soda? Note: when it comes to food, my standards are very high. However, during the fall -- they had this plumb coffee cake which was so good that I ended up buying it as my BIRTHDAY cake and it was outstanding. Everyone loved it and they took seconds. Well done Wagshal's! Service is generally nice, not always super nice -- but I understand that in a new joint it can get a bit stressful. Yeah, it can get a bit disorganized on the checkout. Hope they sort this out because cheeky service with the piazzas probably not the best thing in the American market.
