Dined tonight during Valentine's Day weekend. We've always enjoyed dining here and tonight's dinner was no exception. They had a special prix-fixed menu for Valentine's Day priced at $98 per person. I thought this was a great deal considering how much food they serve you. My wife also got the wine pairing for $45- you get four glasses of wine, so it's a good deal. Natalia was our waitress and she was great. She was very friendly and service as usual was spot on. I opted for a la carte and got our usual Grilled Spiced Wild Calamari - still delicious and the Pappardelle. This is one of my favorite dishes here. Most of the pasta dishes here are really good, so you can't go wrong with any of those selections. For the special Valentine's Day menu, the Beef Tartare & Smoked Bone Marrow and the Roasted Lobster Fra Diavolo was definitely the highlight of the evening. The beef tartare was sitting on top of the bone marrow, and they served a really large piece of bone marrow! The Roasted Lobster Fra Diavolo needs to be on the regular menu- it was that good. The lobster tasted like it was cooked sous-vide because it was so light and tender. This dish also came with Key West Shrimp. The Squid Ink Tagliatelle pasta was al dente - just perfect. I have been visiting this location since it opened, and I appreciate its excellent atmosphere with a classy vibe. However, I've noticed during each visit that the staff changes frequently, and we often see new faces. The servers and hosts are usually friendly, but it seems they either forget to check on us or are too busy to do so regularly. This has been a consistent issue during our visits. Although the restaurant is not overly busy, it is quite large and has multiple separate seating areas. It's possible that our server was preoccupied with other tables that we couldn't see. My daughter often feels frustrated during our visits since we don't allow her to use electronic devices like many other parents do. Despite this, she still enjoys the restaurant, the food, and the friendly staff. It's unfortunate that they don't serve warm bread and olive oil like many other Italian restaurants do. We love the seafood and all the pasta dishes, having tried them all. My favorite is Fabio's ravioli, while the grilled octopus, grilled calamari, and Branzino are also top choices. Overall, the food is good, but it is a bit pricey, and the service needs to improve. I don't mind paying higher prices, but I expect good service in return. read more

I've been wanting to try Sfoglina for a while, but I was sadly disappointed with my visit. We went on a midweek night, and it wasn't busy. Unfortunately, my wife, who is disabled, was taken to the farthest corner of the restaurant, literally the farthest from the door. I thought they were taking us to one of the cute booths, but no, it was just a sad table in the corner by ourselves. Our server was fine, and the food was fine. The shrimp looked more tasty than it was, but overall, it didn't hit the mark like other Italian restaurants in the area. They do have a parking lot near by. I had eaten at the downtown location and decided that I would order something else since I didn't particularly like what I had ordered there. I opted for a red pasta. Ironically, I honestly didn't like this either. There was something about the flavor that was just kind of off. I'm not sure if maybe it's just this chain that I'm just not into, but I've tried two of the restaurants and I don't think that maybe I'm just not into the pasta here. Other than that, the service was really great. Our server is really on top of everything. We had a few people in our party who had some pretty severe dietary restrictions, and she ensured that she verified that there would be no cross-contamination with their food orders. She was also very consistent and very timely. I ordered a glass of the cava, which is very good in addition to an espresso martini, which was absolutely delicious. Overall, the vibes were very good. We were sitting in the back room and it was just really fun. You can tell that they took a lot of time to decorate their walls. It was filled with fun, Italian 60s vintage photos and it was just a very inviting experience. Overall, I would say I had a fun experience, I don't think that I would probably be a return visitor ordering pasta, but maybe I would order like a salad or maybe just stick with an espresso martini because it was delicious. read more

Such a cute spot in Van Ness! I know they have a few locations but this feel very much like a neighbor spot. It's pretty big inside and has a super cute outdoor patio. Wish I lived closer by as I would come by often! Our waitress was so lovely; she knew lots about the menu and was so kind! She sent us some food she thought we'd like and totally killed it. They have a great wine selection with a long bottle list. We got the Calamari to start. We loved it; it was fried rather than breaded and fried and was paired with an insane sauce. We made a last minute reservation here for dinner on a Friday night and they were able to take us! Which was great news and we appreciated them being so accommodating! Anyways... The food was pretty good! The Mafalde alla Norcina was great and so decadent. The sausage was so good and the sauce was delicious. The clam dish however was very... interesting. My boyfriend got it and said the sauce wasn't great and found it to just be extremely clammy and he loves clams so that's saying something. But everything else besides that was awesome. The garlic bread was gooey and cheesy but the crust was crunchy. The desserts were insane! We were given a complimentary gelato swirl and that was the star of the show--truly. Our service was fabulous. The waitress (I wish I knew her name) was so attentive and helpful. She gave recommendations, checked in, and ultimately was just really awesome! Came here during the week for dinner and had a lovely time. Ambiance is romantic yet comfy! We walked in on a Thursday evening and were seated promptly despite being very early for our reservation. I ended up getting the Nonnas gnocchi because I wanted something comforting yet didn't want a red sauce. It was exactly what I needed. This was hands down my favorite Italian dining experience in a while. For a party of 2 on a Monday night, we had no wait time and very attentive service. We started with asparagus, calamari, and bread - all delicious. We were expecting the calamari fried and were pleasantly surprised that it came grilled. The sauce it came in MAKES the dish - I opted to dip my bread in the sauce over the marinara it came with. The asparagus was also served in a sauce like I had never tried before. All delicious, highly recommend. For entrees, my friend enjoyed the cacio pepe and I loved the pappardelle with ragu bolognese. Perfect noodles, perfect sauce, perfect portions. Dessert was my favorite part - the Piemontese Gianduja was to die for. Next time I would pass on the tiramisu. I had just arrived in DC and was craving a glass of wine and dessert. Sfoglina was across the street from our hotel, and it was happy hour, so we popped in over. I wish I was hungrier because they had some pretty tasty looking dishes on their happy hour menu. The restaurant is beautifully decorated and screams date night. Sfoglina is a gorgeous dining experience that deserves all the rave! Came here for evenings drinks and bites and left extremely satisfied and excited for my next visit. We were seated at the bar and were welcomed by a friendly, lively staff that helped us pick the best menu items. The restaurant is beautifully decorated in a red, classic Italian theme and has plenty of seating. To eat, we got the Provolone Garlic Bread alongside the Spritz Tower. The bread was perfectly seasoned and paired well with the varieties of spritz. The cheese and tomato sauce were so fresh and practically melted in my mouth. My personal favorite spritz was the limoncello - very light and refreshing. Highly recommend ordering the tower! It's a decent price and helps those that are indecisive, like myself My friend then got an Espresso Martini - truly one of the best I have EVER HAD! Truly changed the game for all future ones I'll have. Was so good we split another and gave our compliments to the bartender. Food was good. We started with the delicious warm Rosemary Bread. For our main course, we enjoyed the Braised Beef Agnolotti and the Penne alla Vodka. Both were really good and loved the pasta and sauces. I found the overall service to be underwhelming. Especially upon arrival and being seated. The front could use some focus and up-skill on service for the price-point. We had to wait forever to be seated and had to wave someone down after waiting a few minutes alone. It was like no one was working the front. Our server Diane was good, but it was missing a bit for me. This is a very unassuming restaurant. If you walk too fast you'll walk right past it. Wonderful cozy atmosphere and the service was excellent!!! I had an overall good experience at Sfoglina. I would describe it as a seesaw. There were moments where I felt like it was leaning towards okay and then other times where it leaned to good. Here's why: Initially there was a mix up with the reservation (my fault) BUT they were accommodating and put me on the waitlist. However, our server was friendly but no personality. She was relatively monotone, and straight faced (and maybe this is because it was almost the end of the night). The food was also seesaw like. I started off with garlic bread and a Caesar salad. The garlic bread was average and the Caesar salad was a hit. The dressing was flavorful and dressed perfectly. The croutons weren't anything special but the salad itself was great. For my entree I got the Ravioli San Leo. This was yet again seesaw. The sauce was delicious, creamy, and zesty. The ravioli itself had more goat cheese than zest from the lemon. The portion for the entree is also alright for the price. To finish off I got the chocolate cake and a complimentary dessert of what seemed like raspberry/vanilla mix sorbet. Both were out of this world. The chocolate cake is like Ferrero rocher in cake form. The sorbet was a good balance of sweet but sour. Inside, felt a bit crammed especially my table. Came here for Sunday brunch. The brunch menu is not extensive but has a couple of classic dishes. You can also order from the regular menu. The set brunch of three courses for $32 is enough to feed two especially if you get the coffee cake as a starter, also can add bottomless Bloody Mary for $18. Food is all good. His Fiola Mare is our anniversary spot but Sfoglina is closer and terrific for pastas, salads and more. The house red wine is wonderful. The San Leo is a favorite pasta although they are all great. Attended an event at the Austrian Embassy so we walked the 9 min to the restaurant on a weekday evening for dinner. We split a Caesar salad, got the Italy tasting of 3 pastas, and a burrata and bread. The service was disappointing. First the appetizers came before our wine came. Then the main meal came quickly after the appetizer and we still had the appetizers plates in front of us so they had to stand there with our hot meal while they cleared the appetizer plates and cleared our utensils and then we had to wait with the meal in front of us while they went and got share plates and utensils. Rookie mistakes. The wine was good, chilled, and a nice pour. The atmosphere on the patio was very nice. I really liked it. It had an ambience that was good for talking and enjoying a meal but the meal felt a bit rushed. Our waiter recommended the braised short rib ognolotti and that was the best recommendation. They were delicious, were bursting with flavor and stuffed with lots of meat. Highly recommend although not something I'd normally order. The two Roman dishes - Cacio and Pepe and the carbonara - tasted similar. I felt the Cacio and Pepe needed more pepper and the carbonara was missing the mark on the flavor of the pancetta. The showstopper was the Caesar salad. It had capers and a great sauce. The burrata and bread (they charge for bread but it was really good) were equally delicious and a generous amount. This is a very cute, authentic Italian restaurant. Perfect for a date night. I came here for a Valentine's Day dinner. The service was fantastic and all the staff were very friendly. I loved that they came by to show you all the different homemade pasta shapes on this platter; what a lovely and personal touch! The Caesar salad was amazing! The garlic bread, and beet salad were delicious! The calamari was surely different than the fried version we always expected but it was so good nonetheless! I would say they made the calamari more elegant and elevated. The pasta texture was amazing; you can taste and feel that they were made fresh. The overall pasta dishes we got were good but nothing I'm dying to go back for. We got plenty of dessert and they did not disappoint. We ate out on the patio area, which had fake trees and twinkling lights that felt like a fairy garden. It has soft lighting with beautiful strands of lights across the ceiling. Absolutely disappointed in the service from this restaurant I had to walk out. My waitress had demeaning attitude after I had requested to order an appetizer. She said oh you don't want to order now in which I responded. Yes, I'd like to order an appetizer while I make my final decision. She said oh well the kitchen it's better if you just order all of it at once at which point I informed her that I wasn't ready to order my full meal that I would just like to order the appetizer until I make my decision. After a little back-and-forth, she asked if I wanted some water in which I politely said no thank you and she proceeded to roll her eyes and walk away from the table as if she was insulted that I did not want water. I have eaten at Sfoglina three times. The most recent was for a business function. I was the organizer; someone else paid, which is an ideal arrangement. We did not, however, abuse the hospitality, and I emphasized we had to be there to work. Our group of seven enjoyed it, to a person. I write to mention a specific aspect of the service. I had forgotten. So I am writing as a reminder to self as much as for others. Sfoglina serves their dishes a la carte. You need to order the pasta and the sides. Some items came with a bit. But for a satisfying meal, you ought to be planning multiple courses. Lest anyone believe that is a criticism, it is not. This is how restaurants should configure their menus, if they are oriented larger parties. It is not quite family style. We ended up with more than one appetizer per person, and one entree per person; the former, communal; the latter, indviidual. The portion sizes also were reasonable. They were what you'd expect for fine dining, rather than a place you'd bring kids to and wish for leftovers to last for days (which usually are downmarket, i.e., this correlates positively to quality). The calamari was healthier, not breaded; The cheese with honey was great, the fresh burrata acceptable but not that same quality. The garlic bread was gobbled up, and I got a second serving -- and I still myself was unable to partake, because I was considerate and those who had had a piece helped themselves to another. The pastas were, as you would guess at an Italian place that prides itself on that starch, excellent, and they were not overdone with sauce, properly subtle and also al dente. I had the swordfish. It was advertised as eight ounces, and that likely is prior to grilling (not sure how much with fish you have shrinkage). We had dessert though we did not linger. Those, such as the carrot cake that three ordered slices of, were oversized, unlike what preceded. The server was hard working and attentive. The manager checked on us. Best italian restaurant, one of the best restauranfs overall that I've been to. Spent an weekday night here on a special occasion and I can't find a fault in Sfoglina. Exceptional service. Been at more expensive places but never have I felt so attended. I unknowingly dropped my cloth in the midst of a conversation and one of the servers came in with cloth in hand ready to put it on my lap. My server was pleasant and polite, informative of any questions I had on the menu. And we were given a ticket to pick up our takeaway leftovers at the front desk, neatly packaged so we didn't have to do it ourselves and take away from the ambiance of the night. Speaking of ambiance, the interior is beautiful. Warm tones everywhere, ambient lighting and pleasant, perfect date night vibes. And the food was great as well. Once seated, we were given water immediately; our server came by to collect drink orders quickly. The server was able to answer questions from our party, including sharing information about food allergies and substitutions. Sfoglina changed its brunch menu on Saturday, January 25; the updated menu was not available online prior to our arrival (and is still out of date). I originally planned to order the cacio e pepe pasta, substituting for corn-based tagliatelle (rice-based macaroni is also available for those who avoid gluten). Unfortunately, the recipe for the cacio e pepe sauce has changed; it now contains wheat, making it unsafe for me to eat. Instead, I ordered two sides--mixed fruit (raspberries and blueberries available today) and bacon (four slices were provided). Both the fruit and the bacon was fine, but unremarkable; the fruit was predominantly blueberries, and the bacon was slightly undercooked. I did not drink anything other than water today. When reconciling our bill, we were told that a maximum of two cards could be provided as payment (so we Venmo'ed one person). No service fee was applied, nor was an automatic gratuity. Overall, Sfoglina remains a solid, decent option for brunch or dinner when in the Van Ness neighborhood. I appreciate having two pasta choices, though providing notations on the menu to indicate which pastas could be made gluten-free, safely, would allow for better planning what I plan to eat. Romantic and reasonably priced. Food- we got the margarita pizza, Cacio e Pepe, and cauliflower. Each had a good portion size and great flavors. Drinks- we got the Sangiovese brut which hit the perfect note of bubbles and light flavors( not too sweet) Vibe- it's cozy, nice decor, and the lighting allows for an intimate feel. I love the food here! But service is always terrible. Don't expect fast service. I sat down for over 20 minutes today before getting any sort of service or water. I saw a bunch of the servers just talking by the server stand while going to the bathroom. I almost considered just getting up and leaving. To top it off they also removed by favorite pasta dish, the carbonara. read more
