Located on Waiola Street in the heart of Honolulu is this gem. Famous for their delicious shaved jce. When ordering don't hesitate to get the ice creams and condensed milk. The service is great! The store is small and has lots of merch. Overall it's a must stop if you plan on staying on the south side of the island.
Waiola Shave Ice has been operating for at least 20 years now, and located in a residential neighborhood away from shopping centers and malls. I remember my father taking me when I was in Elementary School, and for nostalgia sake, I decided to return after work. Open everyday from 11a-6:30p, its rare to see a local mom and pop shave ice shop open that late. The shave ice was as good as I remembered it 20 years ago. Can't wait to get the azuki bean one next.
This is a spot I go to whenever I am in Honolulu. It's a great price with so much flavors! I love their tigers Blood with lychee, ice cream and condensed milk! I would give more but the people serving you are not very friendly. But hey, you're just there for some shaved ice so it's ok! Haha! They also have a little store in the back to get some li hing candies or other goodies! Super small location in a neighborhood. Parking is ok too it all depends how busy they are during the day but they do have street parking and parking to the right of their store if you're facing it. But definitely one of my go to spots! Must try!
I've been going to Waiola's the past 20 yrs and have tried other shaved ice places but...This is best shaved ice in town! The consistency and finely shaved ice makes it my the best. My go to is the rainbow shaved ice with vanilla ice cream. It can get packed at times but parking is super easy, and rarely is it hard to find a spot. Lastly, they have super cute merch. I would put this on top of the list of shaved ice spots to visit when in town in Oahu!
This is my favorite place to get shave ice in Hawaii! I usually get lililkoi and guava syrup which is always really fresh tasting! I always get ice cream on the bottom and li hing mui powder on top. If you're not local, you should give that a try. Its s popular crack seed in Hawaii from plum seed so it hint of bitterness with the sweetness of the fruit syrup. Delicious!!! Or ONO we say in the islands ! There are a couple benches out front so you can hang out and eat without making a mess in the car. Also check out the store which has lots of other snacks. The lady and keiki's that work there are always so nice, so be kind back to them!
I've had my fair share of shave ice on the Hawaiian islands, and this one was just so disappointing. Yes the ice is soft, but the syrup flavors all tasted the same and was just meh. Also, if you ask for mochi they put it on the bottom so you have to dig it up and save it for your last bites which makes no sense. The service was super strange too. The workers don't greet you they just stare at you and you just have to talk and say your order to them. Not a fan, go to Ululani's (the goat).
A fairly popular shaved ice place recommended to many. You can get an affordable shaved ice for $4-8 depending on the size and topping. As we wanted to get to another place quickly, we opted to pay a little more for DoorDash pickup which came by pretty fast, but you lose a lot on the presentation as it is like an ice plate instead of shaved ice pile on top. This won't be my first and last time trying shaved ice, but it is something worthwhile to consider if you want the presentation. As for the shaved ice, I wish the texture was more smooth. I bit several chunks of fairly large ice and the liquid syrup tasted a bit artificial. We got the Obama rainbow which had cherry, lemon-lime, and passionfruit, and the passionfruit was my favorite while the lemon-lime tasted like cleaning liquid.
I can see why this shave ice is so well loved and rated very high. Waiola is in a residential area but has a parking lot and some street parking. Theres also a cute store inside with tote bags, stickers, and tee shirts, and some other snacks too. As for the shave ice, the ice is really fine and soaks up all of the syrup. I got a small POG and lychee with condensed milk. My boyfriend and I ordered really quick and got our order within 5 minutes. Even though the ice is really good, I felt like their syrups were a bit lackluster and it tasted more artificial to me. My boyfriend really liked his, since he tried their melon and Thai tea flavors, which I thought were decent, but I couldn't help but notice the artificial taste for all of the syrups. I like how affordable this place is, and maybe I should've tried something else, but POG and lychee were one of their popular flavors.

This place is the definition of "if it ain't broke, don't fix it!" Waiola is better than any of the other shaved ice places in Oahu. They are very traditional and stick to the basics, which I absolutely love. Nowadays, food establishments are very gimmicky and always trying to do the next cool thing, which is personally not my cup of tea. Waiola Shave Ice had so many flavors to choose from! You have the option to mix and match flavors if you don't want anything that is already set. There were some seats in the front but it's more of a grab and go place. I got the: Hawaii 5-O Rainbow - Cotton candy, Lychee, and Passion Fruit The shave ice was light and fluffy! They also had a small store inside where you can buy some snacks. The li hing powder here is better than the ones at ABC. Overall, I'd come back here for more shave ice! I'm very upset. I bought an ice cup with ice cream and it was priced as $2.50, then the Asian man charges me 4.00, I'm mad because on the sign it says $2.50 and he clearly ripped me off. Also my sister ordered a shave Ice and she wanted mochi balls, the lady cashier said there was no more mochi balls but we clearly saw the fresh mochi balls and they decided to speak Chinese when we asked. I'm also very upset because he said $4.00 for the ice cup and he gave me $0.50 cents. I clearly got ripped off and I'm very dissatisfied with my experience here. They seem to rip me off or charge me extra every time I come here. Please do your customers right and stop false advertising saying it's a cheaper price but it's more expensive. read more

I'm not sure who hyped this place up like a mofo, but it was disappointing. Locals are definitely missing out if this is the best they can get. I've had multiple better shaved ice on the mainland. Heck, I feel you can get better shave ice, even in the center of Waikiki, instead of ubering or taking a scooter out here. "Shave ice" - Hawaii "Shaved ice"- Mainland The worker was rude and horrifying! The shave ice was way too sweet and flavors weren't great and reminded me of "splenda" or "sweet & low" artifical flavor vibe. I would've gave them a lower score, but could've been the flavors we chose, too. We ordered strawberry with icecream and vanilla with ube. Would I be back? ehhh... maybe? read more

During my recent visit, I tried their great lilikoi and haupia creation, topped with condensed milk and mochi! It was a fluffy mound of finely shaved ice with lilikoi, also known as passion fruit. Waiola was the perfect pick-me-up after a day of snorkeling at Hanauma Bay. The menu is extensive and there are a ton of unique flavors and toppings. My partner and I opted for the small cups instead of a bowl--he got the Obama Rainbow (lol...I think it was cherry, lime, and lilikoi) and I got pickled mango and li hing flavor. We also got condensed milk as a topping. I liked how fluffy and fine the ice was and how evenly distributed the syrups were (unlike the lesser snow cone). The small storefront also carries branded merch, Hawaiian snacks, and some other fun tchotchkes. Parking is okay, but the lot isn't too big (there are maybe less than 5 spots around the building). We came an hour before closing time so we were able to snag a spot. read more
I made an effort to try a different shave ice spot every day of my Oahu trip since it's one of their staple desserts. I really wanted to hit up Matsumotos, but unfortunately, I didn't make it in time while in the North Shore. One of the locals I met recommended Waiola instead, insisting that it was even better and suggesting I try the Obama Rainbow, which he claimed was the best flavor. So, I checked out Waiola. There was a bit of a line, but it was still only about a 10-minute wait, and the wait was worth it. The Obama Rainbow didn't disappoint. I ordered it with condensed milk drizzled on top, and my taste buds were literally dancing on rainbows. The ice was so soft and fluffy, and the lemon lime flavor of the rainbow really made the dish amazing. I think I could order the large size of just the lemon lime flavor and be in heaven. It's definitely worth checking out while in Oahu if you're staying near Waikiki! read more

Everyone raves about Waiola, so we had to give it a try (again). We actually went to the other location first, and came to this main location a couple days later. We got the large bowl with POG (passion, orange, and guava) and green tea, topped with condensed milk and mochi balls. The consistency of the shave ice was extremely fine and smooth, the best that we've had on the island. The POG flavor was also super good, one of the best flavors we tried! The green tea was a little on the bitter, rather than sweet, side. The mochi balls were just okay and didn't really have much flavor or bounce, but the condensed milk added a good creaminess to the shave ice. If you care about the consistency of your shave ice, Waiola is the place to go. If you care more about the toppings, there were other shops we went to that were better. Bring cash, because there is a surcharge for using a credit card. The staff isn't super friendly, but they get the job done. There are a few parking stalls, but you'll most likely have to find street parking if it's crowded. Overall, a good way to cool off on a hot day! read more
You can't come to the islands and NOT get shave ice. And if you're going to get one place, this should be the one to go to. 1) They have an extensive number of flavors 2) Their fresh mochi are actually fresh mochi. Perfectly chewy 3) Their ice is light and fluffy. You can really taste the flavors (see #1 above) We usually get the azuki / original flavor shave ice and it is delicious. The reason for the 4 stars? I feel like prior to the pandemic, they used to stack the ice and toppings and it seems like they've gotten slightly skimpier on that front. This shave ice shop is the cutest! They have a wide variety of flavors to choose from like strawberry cream, coconut, mango, and cotton candy. It was hard to choose because they all sounded so good. My friend and I ended up getting the lilikoi and guava with mochi topping and it was so delicious! The ice itself was so soft and the syrups permeated the entire thing so each and every bite was flavorful and delicious! The mochi was also very soft and chewy and added some textural difference to our dessert. The price and sizing was perfect too! The azuki bowl with mochi looked really good too, but I was feeling something more fruity and refreshing at the time. Definitely stop by if you're looking for a light dessert that is cheap and delicious! read more

Love the shaved ice here. Waiola Shave Ice is one of the better places to grab shaved ice on Oahu. The ice here is finely shaved so you don't bite into random ice chunks or have the syrup seep too quickly through bulky ice pieces. It's the worst when your shaved ice just tastes like water :-P There are so many flavors to choose from. My top favorite is POG (passion fruit + orange + guava). You can check out the board above the order counter for various combinations and size options. You can get 2 flavors if you are ordering a non-custom combination. The quality at Waiola went down for a bit. However, lately the shop doesn't seem overly mobbed and the shaved ice quality seems a bit better again. read more
Who would've though shaved ice could be this good! I now understand why people love it. It really is addicting. We got a small POG with ice cream and condensed milk and small mango and strawberry cream with ice cream. Both were so good, and I totally recommend getting the ice cream with your order! We got the passionfruit and blue hawaii flavored shave ice. The flavors were pretty good and helped us cool down after a long morning of walking. Only downside is that it did not taste as sweet or flavorful as some other shave ice spots we've tried. The mochi was also not the freshest according to my gf. Compared to Island Vintage, which we had just the day before, the shave ice here is definitely more "plain" and in the sense that it's not decorated with alot of additional toppings to enhance its overall flavor. The store itself was pretty cute with blue walls and a nice palm tree and rainbow painted over it. Great photo op for sure! read more

Was expecting some mind blowing experience but it's really just fruit flavor artificially colored shave ice. It's nice and all that President Obama has gotten a shave ice here but it felt very touristy and nothing super memorable about the experience. I don't think I'd come again. Nothing special and would rather save my dessert space for something more unique. read more

This is the shave ice location I grew up on and it's still my absolute fav! They have a super fine shave of the ice and consistent quality. Lots of options for flavors and add-ons, so the possibilities feel endless! To order, you tell them how many of each size and any add-ons such as azuki beans or mochi balls, then they'll ask for your flavors and topping selections. They'll tally up your total and you pay, then step to the side to wait. You'll get your shave ice one at a time, then find a spot to sit or stand to enjoy it! They also have a small retail store inside if you're wanting some old school treats or swag to take home with you. There's a tiny parking lot just next to the store, but you can also find some street parking if it's not super busy. If you haven't been, I highly recommend trying it out! read more
The BEST place for Shaved Iceeee! It was a little corner shop where you lined up and ordered from a side window. There were 2 small benches outside for you to sit. Service was fast and don't let the line scare you. Even for one person, I would recommend you to get the bowl instead of the small cups as the syrup won't be able to cover the bottom of the cups! Their shaved ice was superrrr smooth and the syrup tasted so good. No artificial or chemical taste at all! Topped it off with +$1 condensed milk was totally worth it and cannot the missed! read more

Grew up here, how is this my first review. The OG place to get shave ice in town with all the fixings. Quaint place on the corner in McCully. You pick your size, flavors and toppings of your choice. Fluffy shave ice that just melts in your mouth. You know a good shave ice when you don't have to chew your ice further. 30 different flavors to pick from and all the toppings you'd expect. Don't skip the condensed milk! Benches outside for you to enjoy your cup or bowl. There is parking to the right of the place in a lot. No need drive all the way to North Shore to enjoy this Hawaii treat. read more
This is a small little spot for shaved ice. There is no parking lot, only street parking. The selection for shaved ice is limited not much flavor offered like other places which is good. The shaved ice texture is super soft and doesn't get hard at all. I got the POG (passion fruit, orange and Guava) with Mochi, apparently they place the Mochi inside. Service I would say is so so. I docked a star due to rude service. The woman who works the front, she seems unhappy, snappy and RBF. Not sure if that's the look she was going for, if so, she got it down. When I asked politely if the Mochi is added as I did pay, she snapped, it's inside. I'm sorry, I don't have x ray vision and I wasn't piercing my head into the hole to watch how they made it. Always gotta have shave ice on the island so decided to try this place since it was close to Waikiki. Wasn't too impressed since the ice was a little tough and there wasn't enough syrup for flavor. I've had snow cones, snow balls, flurries, etc but never in my life had shaved ice, especially like this. Embarrassingly my first experience with shaved ice was at the Aulani resort and let's just say it was less than desirable. I was hesitant to come here because I didn't enjoy that one so I figured I wouldn't enjoy this one but my husband convinced me after our long hike on diamond head and thank goodness he did. Id like to start off by saying Aulani has no idea what shaved ice is. This is soft, fluffy goodness. It's so creamy and flavorful. If this is how shaved ice is supposed to be, I am obsessed and in love. I got mine plain to keep it simple but next time I want to try the mochis, condensed milk, and all of the yummy goodness they have to offer. Prices are a steal, I'm honestly surprised they don't charge more. There was a long line but it moved fast and parking wasn't hard to find since a lot of people Uber there. This place is also the cutest, I want to go back and grab one of their magnets. You won't regret coming here. read more

Not as flavorful as the rainbow one but probably because less flavors? But I could barely taste the guava flavor. Tasted the lilikoi tartness which was good .:: Service/ Ambiance/ Parking ::. The service was meh, which was also a reason for the 3 stars. Not only was the shave ice ok, the cashier was not super friendly or anything and just super short. A few of my friends recommended Waiola to me. I love the consistency of the ice here! Every bite was smooth and melts in my mouth. Syrup was sweet, fruity, and coated the ice nicely. Make sure to bring cash so you won't get charge a card fee. I'm knocking off one star because the cashier seemed to be not very helpful and kinda rude. I was not quite sure what to order / slight overwhelmed with the options and numerous flavors. I made an order and the cashier's tone seemed to be kinda rude/ questioning me as if I did something wrong. I retracted my order and re-ordered again. A regular size (2 flavors) P.O.G and strawberry with lilikoi cream. Despite the "not so friendly" service... (perhaps she is just tried?? Idk) the shaved ice was pretty good!! I don't believe so. The syrups don't taste like the fruits they are supposed to resemble.
What are the prices for sizes?
Keiki $6 (Kid's size) and Small $6.75. They currently aren't serving other sizes due to low supply of ice.
