It's NOT a revolving sushi bar, but the food is served to you via conveyer belt. Cool concept. The plates were a bit expensive in my opinion, many ranging from $6-$12. Quality was good and the rice they used was interesting, at first it looks like brown rice, but it's white rice seasoned in a darker vinegar sauce, making it brown. With this place next to Tokyo Central, there was a ton of hype. When this place first opened, you couldn't get a table, but now on a Monday night there's no line, and it's clear why. The store smells fishy, which is not normal for a sushi spot, indicating the fish is not fresh. Prices are way too high for what you get: three tiny pieces of sashimi for $8, hand rolls with nothing special (just brown rice and minced fish) for $4 each - u are better off going to ROL handbar in the same lot for better quality To make things worse, my water cup had a crack in it and was leaking all over the table. We kept wiping it down thinking it was condensation until halfway through the meal when we realized the cup itself was broken We tried an array of rolls, sashimi, handrolls but it was really nothing special unfortuantely. If you're looking for a deal, the salmon party is six pieces for $12--and while that's decent, you're honestly better off walking next door to Tokyo Central and grabbing your own sashimi. Excited to try this place since it's right next to the Tokyo Central (separate building right next door). Thought it'd be very busy on a weekend (it did get busy eventually) but we came a little after opening on a Sunday was a good 10-15min wait. The host was also very helpful, giving us great insight on when to come back since we were waiting for more people, when to put our names on the list again and was so gracious in seating us. The ambiance was great- bright and clean, and the conveyor belts were fast to bring orders and the booths were spacious for our party of 7 (including 3 kids). And the food was the best part- everything was well prepared, fresh and great portions. The salmon belly was so crisp and juicy too, we ordered more than once. WAKA Sakura exceeded my expectations. I just came back from Japan and wanted to treat my partner to some of the Japanese experience I had. I was expecting the same quality of fish as Kura and other conveyer/revolving sushi restaurant but it was much higher quality. I think it's probably the best conveyer sushi I've had in the US. The rice is unique - I've never had red vinegar sushi rice. It was very tasty and it made me actually want to eat/have the rice in my nigiri and rolls. I don't normally like the lower quality of tuna here in the US, but the medium fatty tuna here was great! Definitely wanted to keep ordering. They have real wasabi here. They have some unique sauces as well for the seared fish. As for side dishes, the miso soup was quite large, making it pretty worth the price. The karaage was okay. Unfortunately, they were out of the steamed egg so we'll have to come back. The yuzu cheesecake was delicious and I should've gotten more. The service was quick. Only took around 15 minutes to get seated and you get to use the tablet or your phone to order. They were extremely quick to take away the empty plates as well. They played soft music the whole time and it was an overall pleasant experience. No one was too loud. 10/10 - will be back soon! read more

Waka Sakura has recently opened in Irvine. We went on Saturday night and arrived around 7:05 pm. The parking lot is brutally tight. I'm not sure who drew those parking spaces but there's barely any room for doors to open so watch out where you park. We went to put our names down on the waitlist inside. There is a stand outside but it was not functional when we went so I popped inside and found a working one. There were quite a few parties ahead of ours and we were quoted 1 hour and 20 minutes. We decided to kill time next door at Tokyo Central. After about 40ish minutes, I received a text message stating that we were the next parties to be called and to be close to the restaurant. Sure enough, within 5 minutes, I received an additional text to check in with the hostess. We were seated and given a quick spiel about the ordering process. You can use the iPad at the table or your phone via QR code. We used the iPad and ordered a Coke, iced green tea, tuna nigiri sampler, salmon nigiri sampler, spicy tuna handrolls (x2), bluefin topped spicy tuna rolls, spicy tuna shrimp tempura rolls, unagi nigiri, and yuzu cheesecake. Placing the orders either piecemeal or all at once, the food is prepared to order and delivered via conveyor belt. Other items like drinks and dessert come to you via one of the servers. Everything was streamlined as an experience. The ambiance was quiet and it was an interesting experience. My husband seemed to enjoy it and we liked the sushi that we got. Our favorites were the hand rolls, spicy bluefin rolls, and the novelty of the conveyor belt. I really enjoyed the chawanmushi (silky tofu like steamed egg with a couple mushrooms and a shrimp) - make sure you get there early if you want to try it bc it sells out. I heard about waka because or their gardena location and promptly came here once it opened. I was able to come here during lunch time and there were plenty of seating with little to no wait. Environment - the restaurant is fairly large and clean with sounds kept to a minimum. It felt very light and airy inside. I can't say entirely this is a revolving sushi bar as opposed to a belt that being you your ordered dishes haha so if you're expecting to stare at dish in a merry-go-around status you're not at the right place Service - workers were great and answered any of our questions promptly. Food - the price is decent and it varied according to what we dish you for. It's moderately priced and the freshness is okay. I didn't opt for any of their non fish options and will probably not be back to try them. All in all, I would say I would get my fish from inside Tokyo central than here read more

The Philadelphia roll is pictured with avocado, but it doesn't actually come with any -- misleading and not typical for a Philly roll. The salmon also had a rubbery consistency The bluefin tuna sashimi was incredibly difficult to eat. It smelled incredibly fishy and had a sour taste. Never experienced something like that. I ordered a Coke Zero and received Diet Coke instead. On the positive side, the service was quick and the staff were very friendly. Overall, pretty underwhelming experience. I found this because of Yelp and my friend and I decided to try it out for dinner last night Ambiance: 5/5 Very clean and bright Contemporary and nicely decorated The booths are separated by taller plastic to give a more separated (clean? Private?) dining experience but very much like many places in Japan Service: 5/5 Staff was friendly and attentive, given that all the food is ordered from an iPad at your table there is very little interaction. They promptly refilled our drinks (hot tea and cold tea) and bussed our dishes efficiently. But there was no one to greet us after sitting down or get us soy sauce dishes. You have to request wasabi from the iPad but ginger (honestly one of my favorite things) and soy sauce are on the table. Food: 2/5 So I love sushi. Whenever I go to a new place I try the same general items- salmon yellowtail and tuna sashimi, salmon nigiri, scallop nigiri, and I got the surf clam. The brown rice threw me. I prefer traditional white rice with my sashimi and it was just much more rice in proportion to the fish than I prefer but for the price, it was fair. The soy sauce was very salty! The fish- of what I ordered the tuna sashimi tasted the most fresh and the best. Nothing was outstanding and nothing tasted horrible but it was all mediocre. And had my stomach been fine I'd have given it a 3.5. However, about 15 minutes into eating I began to get a small sharp stomach pain in my lower abdomen. I ignored it and kept eating and sipping on hot green tea which I thought could help it. By the time we were ready to get up and leave (90 minutes or so, the food had a very inconsistent time of arrival, some come out super fast and others took 10 minutes), we both had severe sharp stomach pains. I know food poisoning normally takes longer but I'm not sure what else it couldn't have been. It was agonizing and I actually had trouble walking out and driving home. If urgent care wasn't closed I likely would have gone. (Luckily I took Advil and bentyl and was able to fall asleep and feel fine this morning) Drinks: it is weird they have a sign outside about corkage but then say you can't bring in any outside food or drinks. I asked about going next door to Tokyo central to get sake and they said no. So I'm not sure why they have a corkage fee sign outside to begin with. That was confusing. Pricing: 4/5 Overall it's affordable. They don't have alcohol (yet) so for two of us with just hot tea/cold tea our bill was $86. I do think it's presumptuous to prompt for tips starting at 18 percent when there is very little human service and most things are automated via a conveyer belt. I'm hesitant to say I'd return because if it may happen again, I'd rather not. It may have been a one off or may have been just a super weird coincidence that we both had the same time of stomach ache right afterwards. I will say it's a fun ambiance and a nice concept with the iPads and I like conveyer belt styles. If you have a strong stomach I'd say it's great for groups because it's easy to order what you want (rolls are half sizes, 4 pieces and priced accordingly). Saw this place when I went to Tokyo Central's grand opening and wanted to try but the first time the wait was pretty bad so I decided to come back another time. This time I finally came back and while the wait was still long it wasn't as bad and it was worth the wait! Came on a Friday around 6pm and from their tablet it said the wait time would be around 2 hours. Thankfully, we didn't need to wait the full 2 hours but it did still take about 1.5 hours. It wasn't as bad as I thought since I have used some of the time to go into Tokyo Central and just walked around the big plaza. It made sense though because the space inside is quite small with only a few booths, I thought being a party of 2 would go faster but it didn't make a difference since all the booths mostly had 4 seats. Once we got seated, ordering process was easy through the tablet while there was also staff around if you needed anything. Service was great, the staff were attentive and welcoming. Me and my sister ordered a few items from the nigiri combo selection to share as well as a 2pc bluefin tuna nigiri: scallop lovers, tuna lovers, shrimp lovers, salmon party, and wagyu beef trio. We also got a steamed egg since we actually saw many people order it and it was shown as a popular item on the tablet. We were both able to try every nigiri by eating half of each one. It was also pretty cool that this is a conveyor-belt style restaurant, though not your traditional conveyor-belt with all the options coming through in a circle but it was a cool experience just seeing each plate go through the conveyor belt. Everything we got tasted really good and most importantly, fresh. Also liked how unique their rice is, they don't use your typical sushi white rice and they blend the rice with red vinegar which I surprisingly really liked. Me and my sister both agree the wagyu beef trio was our favorite, while I also personally enjoyed the scallop. While the steamed egg was on the smaller side, it was hot and good. The egg itself was fluffy and soft, and I liked how it came with mushroom, edamame, and corn. Overall, such a nice and fulfilling dinner experience as we enjoyed everything and left feeling full. I must start off and say I'm not a very big sushi fan. I can enjoy sushi but will not ever crave it. Waka Sakura has changed my mind. Their menu is small, and pricier than other sushi spots in the area per plate, but the quality and taste makes it worth it. You order off an iPad and it comes on the conveyer belt. Ordering was easy and straightforward, it was through a tablet. Our server was nice and attentive. The restaurant was very quiet which was my favorite - it's quite rare to find a quite restaurant that serves a delicious meal nowadays. Aesthetic is very much like the location in Gardena except this one is not within Tokyo Central but rather a restaurant next to it, which in my opinion, makes it feel more casual and less intimate with all the windows compared to Gardena's. It's not a constant stream of sushi like Kura Revolving Sushi, but it does come out via conveyor belt when you order. Service was very attentive and kind (personally, better service than Gardena's). Got their Salmon Party and Tuna Lovers. Great quality overall, but I prefer Gardena's quality for the tuna more. It's not a big difference though. While their menu selection is more limited, it makes up in quality for a very fair price, especially if you get the sampler plates. Overall, Waka Sakura is my favorite chain for conveyor belt sushi in America! Service is good, prices are appropriate, and perfect for a date or more casual but intimate hangout. A new Converyor belt sushi place has arrived. This place didn't disappoint with real wasabi and quality sushi. Getting into the parking lot is a crazy crowded because the Tokyo Central just open but eventually parking should settle down. Ambiance is modern. You can order either through your phone or the tablet found on your table. Price point is higher than the other conveyor belt sushi join in Diamond Plaza but the quality here is much better. The only complaint I had was that wrong order of Salmon came to our table. It was quickly resolved and I am sure the restaurants still has some bugs to work out. Came here for the grand opening and also because we had coupons from Tokyo Central for some free sushi! This is actually my second time coming, the first time the wait was more than 2 hours and we couldn't wait that long. Second time, only 1 hour wait. After all the hype, I was really looking forward to it. Here's the verdict, in my opinion, if you're looking for cheap revolving sushi, go to Kura instead. Kura offers much better variety and good tasting fish! Also I think the pricing at Kura may be more competitive. At the end of the day, revolving sushi is mostly a gimmick with cheap sushi anyways (in my opinion). One thing we have to cover is their rice. They don't use any ordinary rice. The rice is this brownish color, special "red vinegar" rice. The server warned us about it at the beginning (you're already off to a good start when the server has to warn you about something right at the start). Their tablet thing has a slideshow explaining what the rice is. The rice is OK, I think regular white sushi rice would have probably been better. They say the flavor of sushi is mostly in the rice, so I think using a weird rice is not the best idea. One thing I found disturbing was how vastly different my salmon nigiri appeared compared to the pictures on their menu. In the menu, I saw that the salmon looks plump, fatty, with bright white stripes going through the flesh. However, the salmon nigiri that I actually got looked more like an orange block of cheese. It didn't have that creamy taste you'd expect from a nice plump piece of fish. Oddly enough, the salmon on the rainbow roll looked much better! So I don't know why they got it mixed up like this, but I guess there's less salmon on the roll than on a piece of nigiri? The best thing there was definitely the bluefin tuna! Just straight up bluefin tuna nigiri was very delicious. They also have chutoro if you're into that. I found that the bluefin tuna was great. Interior design looks clean and simple and modern. Some people may like this, others might think it's a bit too sterile. It's definitely not crammed like Kura. The tables seem widely spaced apart. But as a consequence, I think the long wait times will always exist, even on weekdays. When I walked into the bathroom, it felt like walking into a refrigerator. Personally, I like it cold, but I can see some people not liking that. Probably it's a good strategy to get you out of there quickly. Overall, I was kind of disappointed. All that waiting just for some cheap fish and not being able to trust the pictures on the menu was a huge blow. Especially considering this place is relatively new, cheaping out on us this early on felt like a low move. The salmon party is his fave (a selection of diff salmon nigiri). I love the clam miso soup, tastes fresher than most restaurants. I also love that I can adjust my ordering based on my appetite. My son can order to this hearts content and I am good with just a couple rolls and soup. They serve sake and beer too! Generally no wait on week days and a small wait on weekends. It was alright overall. The fish was fresh and some dishes were good, but nothing really wowed me. A few plates were solid, a few were just okay, so it felt a little hit or miss. Service was fine but kind of slow once it got busy. The conveyor belt idea is cool, but some items looked like they'd been sitting out a bit, which took away from it. Not bad, not amazing. I'd come back if I was already nearby, but probably wouldn't go out of my way for it. read more
