We were a bit intimidated because it looked crowded when we first got there, but the restaurant is so large and we were seated within 5 minutes. It's a pretty dimly lit restaurant and it feels like a rave every time there's a birthday because they play really loud music with lights lol. Our servers were all very nice and grabbed our things very quickly when we asked for them! For the food, we started with the garlic edamame, chicken cutlet, and grilled salmon belly. They were all super well-made! The edamame and grilled salmon belly were seasoned very well, and the chicken cutlet was crispy but still juicy. Of course my favorite part was the sushi. Their nigiri prices are unbeatable for the quality and how thick the fish cuts are. My favorites were the bluefin tuna and the yellowtail belly, but everything was super fresh and delicious! I travel all the time for this place. Not sure if the 50% off is just a marketing tactic but either way Im genuinely always satisfied after every visit. The staff are attentive, the bussers are always pre-bussing and the atmosphere is lively, it can be a bit too dark for older crowds. If your dining in anytime after 7pm, be sure to make reservations. Sometimes the wait line be out the door. They have another location off of Newport but in my opinion that location is not as good and much much smaller. Great sushi spot that has been offering 50% off most rolls and even nigiri. There's a parking lot out front that's shared with other businesses in the plaza. They have a tablet outside to add yourself to the waitlist. Restaurant was pretty busy on a Sunday evening but we were seated quickly. Fish was fresh, food was good, staff were friendly even given how extremely busy it was. The only issue is that because it was so busy order accuracy was not ideal. We had ordered 3 rolls and yellowtail nigiri, server went over the order with us before putting it in but when the food arrived the nigiri ended up being a sashimi (which is not part of the 50% off deal) and one of the rolls was forgotten. We also got a salmon collar. The salmon collar was moist and delicious. I love that you get two pieces of collar instead of the usual one at most restaurants. We got a green goblin roll and a red goblin roll. The green goblin has spicy crabmeat and cucumber on the inside and avocado and cilantro on the outside. Really nice and refreshing. The red goblin has spicy tuna on the inside and albacore, bbq sauce, crunchy garlic and red onion on the outside. Such a crazy flavor combination that really works. And we also got the Love Boat. They had a special for when it is someone's birthday where they turn off the lights and play loud music, so if you are sensitive to flashing lights, I would avoid this place. The sushi was amazing! We ordered so much and was so full at the end of it. The sushi tasted fresh and there was a good ratio between rice and fish. This was our second time visiting, and we were honestly really excited to come back. The first time we tried this place, we thought we had found our new go-to sushi spot. The rolls were fresh, flavorful, and beautifully made. Unfortunately, our second experience was completely different. The quality of the rolls was not the same as our first visit. The fish did not taste as fresh, and the overall presentation and texture were noticeably off. Within 5-10 minutes of eating, my daughter became ill with what appeared to be food poisoning. Shortly after, I also began feeling sick. It was very concerning and disappointing, especially since we had such high expectations after our first visit. We truly wanted to love this place, but after this experience, we are hesitant to return. I honestly think a lot of Americans have a very flawed understanding of sushi, especially at these non-omakase sushi spots. What are you people even making? This place isn't cheap either -- AYCE is $38 per person at dinner. The sushi here is bad in a very basic way: the rice and the fish feel totally separate, like they don't belong together. Of course the fish is all previously frozen, and frozen tuna has a texture that's basically awful. The only thing that's somewhat edible is the salmon, but salmon is also the most boring, safest option. Anyone making sushi like this really should go to Japan -- or even to places in Shanghai with actual decent sushi -- and learn what sushi is supposed to be. Good sushi is about fresh, high-quality seafood, properly seasoned sushi rice, and a small amount of real wasabi between the fish and the rice. And speaking of wasabi: what you serve here is not wasabi. It's just mustard-like industrial paste squeezed out of a package. It's nowhere close to freshly grated wasabi. To sum it up: if this meal were $20 per person, I could tolerate the low quality. But at $38 per person, with a bunch of Americans acting like this is "good sushi," all I can say is: what you're eating is not really sushi. And the yakitori is even worse. It's a complete mess. I doubt you've even heard of yuzu kosho. The chicken-and-scallion skewer tastes like the chicken and the scallions were cooked separately and just happened to end up on the same stick. Then everything gets covered in soy-based sauce, which makes it greasy and overwhelming.
