    Nigiri
    Pedro S.

I am baffled how someone allows a place like this to exist. It's a disgrace to the Korean and Japanese culture. I've truly never had anything worse. As soon as I saw the presentation I wanted to get up and leave but I decided to give it a try. The fish on the nigiri was freezer burned and turned to mush in one bite. The peppered tuna looked like dogs had chewed it before it got to the plate. The rice was not sticky so it did not hold its shape. The spicy tuna roll fell apart and was again freezer burned. The dining room was disgusting. After two bites I got up and asked for my money back. The staff looks like they just rolled out of bed and put pajamas on to come to work. When I asked for my money back the staff giggled. No one seems to have any pride in what they're doing here. Truly terrible. Awful. Disgusting. I don't have enough words to describe the pathetic excuse of an attempt this place is at modern Asian cuisine.

Worst sushi I have ever had in my life! Total waste of money. Don't waste your time or money here. For example: my roll came out more as a poke bowl than a roll. Each roll was cut different sizes and most weren't even fully cut, causing the rolls to completely come apart. I even tried using a fork to eat. I don't think there is a sushi chef working here because this is not a mistake they would make. I didn't even mention the dust rich light fixtures above each table. Or the sticky tables. Or the extremely dirty utensils. There are better sushi places in Waco. Go there!

We ordered to go and the food was pretty good. Wasn't as warm as i thought but it was pretty tasty. We all loved it with some kimchi.

The food is great. Seaweed salad and tuna tower are my fave. But this place has to do better or people won't come here! Kids are watching tv on their phones at volume 10 (this is their babysitter). In a booth a grandma and kid are stretched out sound asleep. They look homeless. The girl at the counter is screaming and cackling jokes to the kitchen. And the storage room is in the dining area!! Cmon management. Really????

Not impressed at all. First off the place was super dirty, kinda gross. Most tables were dirty the bench seats were crusted and stained, but couldn't see all that until after you order as you order when you walk in the door & they bring it out to you. We got 2 of the dragon rolls which is spicy tuna on top of a roll with cucumber tempura shrimp avocado. The roll itself was decent but the spicy tuna was terrible! It was room temperature, almost warm and the spice was like a chili powder you might use in Mexican food .... It left a horrible taste in your mouth and did not taste anything like I've ever had. And I love sushi, I've tried a lot of different types. If you are looking for sushi in the Waco area I WOULD NOT RECOMMEND this place

What a fun place to eat! Sushi with a Korean twist, some of the dishes I tried are delicious. I will definitely return each time I visit Baylor. Place is a self serve style, simple and that is why I liked it. Order, get a number and find a table, the employees bring your food. Very positive experience.

The quality and flavor are noticeably superior to anything I've had elsewhere, consistently fresh, perfectly balanced, and clearly made with care rather than shortcuts. One of the reasons we keep coming back is that everyone wins here. I'm hooked on the sushi bowls, and my wife loves that they also offer grilled chicken options with vegetables that are always crisp, fresh, and thoughtfully prepared. It's rare to find a place that nails both quality seafood and non-sushi options this well. The customer service deserves special recognition. The team is genuinely warm, welcoming, and attentive without ever feeling forced. We go regularly, and it's become one of those places where you actually enjoy seeing the staff you've gotten to know. That kind of consistency and friendliness says a lot about how the restaurant is run. J-Petal & Poke isn't just a place we eat, it's a place we look forward to visiting. Even though the parking lot is large, it was packed when we got there (our dinner was 6:30 on a Friday night). The service was good (a bit more on that later). We had: Lobster S'cargot (4/5) - Lobster served with the traditional s'cargot sauce even on the s'cargot dish. Pretty good but very rich. When it first came out, we thought it as being served in a hollowed out bowl but given it's served on the s'cargot dish, the portion size is actually pretty small. Akaushi New York Strip (5/5) - The better steak of the night. Very good version of the NY strip, full of flavor and perfectly seasoned. 10-oz Cold Lobster Tail (5/5) - I added this to make my entre "surf and turf." Delicious and presented in an awesome manner! Akaushi Rib-Eye (3.5/5) - This was an "off-the-menu" special. The waitress brought out a big platter with the specials of the day (6 various cuts of beef). We were told one of these was the Akaushi rib-eye served bone-in. The steak looked great raw (well marbled and 3/4 inch thick). This is not what we got. What we got was not bone-in and the steak was very thin (more like 1/4 inch cut). Putting gross weight aside, looked nothing like what we were presented. We did not say anything as the steak itself was okay. I have a feeling the waitress told us the wrong thing. Cajun Pasta (3/5) - Seasoning and flavor was okay but the pasta was severely overcooked. Overall, a pretty good meal for our trip.

We kept it simple with apps and drinks, and even that was a letdown. The calamari came out lukewarm with zero flavor. Crab cakes were also barely warm (they tasted okay, but still shouldn't be served like that). The worst part was the lobster bisque--bland, lukewarm, and honestly tasted like canned soup with a few pieces of "lobster" thrown in. No flavor at all. We didn't complain, but the manager came over after noticing it wasn't touched and said the chef was "trying something different"... it didn't work. Even a guest next to us overheard and said the quality has gone downhill--she had sent hers back too. The only good thing was the drinks--dirty vodka martinis were solid. Overall, not worth the price. We won't be back.
