First of all, locally owned! Support your local business! This is a great place when you just want a basic burger and fries, without all the fancy fru-fru (waiting in lines, kobe beef - whatever). I like it because they have lots of options if you don't want a burger, such as hot dogs, chicken strips and salad. Never had the tacos, but they have them. The fries are great - sort of like McDonald's but not as salty or greasy. I love, love the hotdogs, esp the chili cheese one, but you can get them plain. I love this because there are not too many places to get hotdogs in Austin ( I love Franks, but not trekking downtown!) The chicken strips are my husband's favorite; they are a little bland for me, but they are huge (get the 4 piece basket, believe me, it will fill you up.) The shakes are very thick and yummy. They have the "blizzard" type dessert which is yummy as well and I appreciate that they have a tiny option, which is perfect for my daughter (or if you're watching your weight!) I love how it's in my neighborhood. Yes, most of the staff are zitty, sometimes surly teenagers, but I think they are all neighborhood high school kids, so I love that the store is giving back jobs to the community. This place is great! The shakes are to die for with a huge straw so the filings don't get stuck in the straw. The pineapple one is so good! I already really liked their fries and for fast food, my burger was great. It was actually bigger than the bun and that never happens with fast food! The bacon was substantial and awesome as well. We waited in line for 7 minutes with no one acknowledging us. Finally an older gentleman fisted bumped The police men in front of us as said he would return.Meanwhile, he was apparently the cook, the server and cashier Despite having at least 2 in the kitchen with him and 3 working ice cream and drive thru. A food delivery man called his client telling them that their food was going to be late bc he spent 10 minutes waiting despite the app telling him the order was ready. Then A lady who ordered her food brought it back to the counter complaining that the order was wrong and the food was cold. The workers saw us there in line of 4 people and ignored us. I gave up along with the three people behind us. I drove to culvers and ate a tasty meal that was taken and served in a timely manner. My family and I love their burgers, shakes and chicken strips. i ordered from the drive thru and when I made it to the window I realized I didn't have my wallet. I offered to run home and get money and I'd be back in 20 minutes. The manager was very understanding told me not to bother and comp'd our meal. I was so embarrassed. They offer online orders so while I drove home my husband went online made the same order and paid for it. We love supporting local businesses. Wally's has a new interior! I'm not saying it's an upscale burger joint now but this is a definite improvement. My son loves the fried chicken strips and he came away last week with the notion that the taste has improved with the remodel. Interesting. The fried chicken strips are the best I have had. Tender, moist, white meat with a tasty crust. And, yes, deep freakin' fried in hot oil. I always open my to go box and snatch one for the ride home. You can stop in and get "wally banged" which is a heck of a lot of fun. Wally Bangers consist of thick ice cream with your choice of add ins quickly swirled together. I like the butterfinger or Reeses plopped into mine. The mister likes the more exotic versions with caramel and pecans. And, the teenager likes a simple M&M Wally Banger. The worst fast food experiences I have EVER had in my life, seriously. I only went here a few times because I work off 360 near 2222, and there aren't many quick options. I have never liked the food too much, they cook everything in some type of oil that has a strong taste and is terrible. I'm a huge fan of McDonald's, so it isn't just me. Today was a horrible experience. I was on my lunch hour when I went to the drive through. I ordered a chicken finger basket. It comes with gravy, which I don't care for, so I asked if they could sub some honey mustard. The lady on the speaker said okay. She then said okay, chiciken fingers with a Coke then. I had already told her a diet Coke, but repeated it again. She then said okay, chicken fingers with honey mustard and a Diet Coke. I thought it was all worked out. When I got the window, it was $8.32!!! Seriously, I could have the same meal at other fast food places for $6 or less. Then I had to pull around and wait by the side of their building because they didn't have the food ready. Hello, people, I am on my lunch hour and it's 12:30, primo lunch time, why isn't your food ready? They brought out my drink first, I took a couple of sips, and yes, it was regular Coke. I am hypoglycemic and can't have that. They came back a bit later with food and I told them about the drink. They brought me a Diet Coke, but it looked like they had just dumped the regular Coke out and filled the cup back up, there was soda running all down the sides of the cup. I've been Wallybanged. And I've come back for more - again and again. I'll agree with Jack N. about Wally's as a burger joint. It's not far from where I work, either. The burgers are standard Mom-and-Pop, nothing exceptional, but perfectly serviceable. But the chicken strips with cream gravy! They remind me of the line from "So I Married an Axe Murderer", where the pop proclaims his hate for Colonel Sanders because he "...puts an addictive chemical in his chicken that makes ya crave it fortnightly". My relationship to Wally's chicken strips and cream gravy can only be seen as...pornographic. Despite my attempts to do right by myself, at least a couple times a month I have to go to Wally's and have my way with their chicken strips and their obscene cream gravy. They are so good that when they've come straight out of the fryer, I've burned my mouth on them and kept eating. Sometimes I've gotten them for lunch and meant to bring them back to work, but oh, they don't make it that far. I have spilled that cream gravy on my passenger car seat not once, not twice but *three* times because I couldn't keep my mitts off until I was back at my desk. You can picture the scene. I've had nearly everything on their menu, so here's some quick tips Delicious: - Crispy Chicken Sandwich (ask them to make it with tenders instead of the breast for extra crispy and extra delicious) - Burgers. They are large and flat. Definitely do double meat. Comes with lettuce/tomato/onion/pickles/mustard by default. - Fries. Actually these are hit or miss... fresh ones are stellar, sometimes you get stale ones... Rock the chili-cheese fries if you truly love yourself - Crispy chicken salad. There may be lettuce under this amazing pile of fried chicken, bacon, and cheese... but I don't care. It's delicious and the honey mustard is perfect Average: - Wallybangers (basically a DQ blizzard) Gross: - Anything with their grilled chicken. Drive through grilled chicken is almost always fowl though... keke Bring your dog through the drive through for free dog treats, although my corgi won't even try them so maybe they're terrible... Sometimes, when it's Friday afternoon and you're still hungover from Thursday night, you gots to go to Wally's. I have to admit, I was sad that Wally's got renovated. I personally prefer my Mom and Pop burger joints to be as disgusting as possible. I want visible grease on the floor, rickety wooden booths, and an old guy named Blade in the back flipping patties with a cigarette hanging between his lips. So... the owner of Wally's wrote me a message and said that they got a new beef provider and that their new beef is more consistent and delicious. I can verify that this is indeed true. I gave Wally's another shot last week sometime and I was pleasantly surprised. While I wouldn't put them in the same league with Dan's or Top Notch still... I would put them on par with Sonic, which IMO is a pretty decent fast food burger. I think the food definitely deserves an extra star. I also appreciate that the owner of this place is reaching out to the customers and not offering up lame excuses for his business. They are making changes that are benefiting the business and asking customers to give them a second chance. That's a business practice I can get behind. I drive past Wally's twice a day. And now, instead of just passing by without a second glance, I might actually swing through and get a burger when I feel that little twinge in my stomach that says: "hey, a burger would be good right now" (which, I won't lie... is quite often!). read more

As much as I want to imagine this place having a giant talking moose next to the building a la National Lampoon's Vacation, it simply will never happen. Even a radical piece of tacky decor like that would still be better than the malt shop meeting place for the Geritol generation that Wally's has become. It's a wonder they don't close at 6pm since that's when the majority of their clientele goes to bed. What happened to the greasy burger joint that I knew and loved? As sad as I am about the change of atmosphere, I'm glad that their food hasn't changed. You can still get a big ol' greasy burger and shake just like before. The one change that I will find the hardest to deal with is the loss of one of the most colorful drive thru employees I have ever met. He was a teenaged boy who referred to himself as "Bling Bling". One thing in particular which I should have mentioned and did not was the excellent, friendly service. I usually do the drive up window and they are unfailingly nice and most often pretty funny, cracking wise with you. I guess I also have to check out the chicken strips with cream gravy, apparently I'm missing out on something good. Go to Wally's - you won't be disappointed. - End of Update I work right around the corner from Wally's, so when I need a burger fix quickly, that's the place I go. Its a pretty 'run of the mill' burger joint, nothing particularly exceptional about them, but they're definitely fine for comfort food. I usually get a "Number One" with cheese, All the Way. That is just a standard cheeseburger with lettuce, tomato and mustard. If you wish to upsize the fries/drink, they call that "Wallysizing", but I've never dared. For a little while, I worked as an assistant in an office off Steck/Mesa. It was a boring job - filing paperwork, calling deadbeats to collect, yada yada - but it allowed me to eat at Wally's at least twice a week. After being out of the office this morning, I decided to visit Wally's drive through for a chicken sandwich and a large Coke. I work very close to Wally's. I drove by forever thinking "it's cute!" It's super close!" "It's local!" Finally I checked it out. What is there not to like? Well, for me, I didn't find the food anything special. I ordered a burger combo with fries and soft drink. The burger was not my favorite. I don't eat out at lunch often to save money, so I can't say I'll return. I've also had the chicken strip basket and I liked that a little better than the burger. The fries are just fine and I enjoy their shakes. It's a very clean and convenient location, they really are "express," and they seem to always be busy during lunch and when everyone's getting off work. I'm actually writing this with one hand in a box of Wally Burger chicken strips. Oh.my.goodness. I'm having a day where my eyes were larger than my stomach; I had only a cup of tea for breakfast, so by the time I decided to hit Wally's, I was s-t-a-rving. So, instead of the 4 piece chicken strip package, I got six. Why, oh why, did I let mine eyes deceive me? I'm struggling at this point to finish even three strips. The french fries are crispy and hot and salted Goldilocks style (juuuuust right). The cream gravy is tasty as well, though for my tastes, it could use a bit more pepper. I have no idea why there's a little mini-roll, but by god, it was tasty, too. At nearly $9, the price was a smidge steep for lunch, so I don't know that I'd be willing to indulge my chicken strip fetish as often as my brain will crave it. And quite honestly, since I'm enjoying this f'ing gravy so much that I'm *that* close to dipping the damned ketchup packages in it, I know that I shouldn't even be contemplating another trip. Came here with my lil sis for a burger, fries, and milkshake while we were waiting to have our pedicures across the street. This was a relatively well organized restaurant. The tables weren't wiped down though so we had issues with stickiness and just...things left out of sorts. We had to ask for cups for water and one of my cups had a bug in it. Yay. Gross. It happens, whatever. We get our burgers and fries and still no shakes for our combos. I go up to the counter again and they had completely forgotten about them! Well my friend and I were feeling adventurous so we decided to try out a new place. We saw Wallys and it had decent reviews so we went in and placed our order. Big mistake. First of all, the food is way over priced for the fast food style that it is. Secondly, the food was some of the most disgusting I've ever eaten. We both ordered burgers and were both highly disappointed. It was as if they poured canola oil on the grill and cooked the burger in it. The burger and bun were soaked in grease. Pure and simple, a good burger, fries and shake joint. They serve my preferred method of a large, thin patty with the standard toppings and just the right amount of bun to make a great and consistent burger. Their fries are the McDonald's style done right and hot every time I have gone here, and that is the way I like them. Their shakes are very thick and very good. The overall feeling of a meal here is what one would have gotten at a McDonald's 40 years ago if it wasn't a chain. Also have tried their chicken fingers that are good, but not great, but at least they offer some alternative to just the standard burger joint fare. A manager at this restaurant knocked on the door of the women's bathroom where two minor females were inside. He asked them leave the restaurant when all they were doing is fixing one of the girls religious scarf, her hijab. This incident has caused this young girl to feel embarrassed and humiliated. Multiple attempts to reach someone at the restaurant and corporate office have gone ignored. This racist and discriminatory behavior must be standard and of no concern to the management . One star is too much for a place that does this to a child. This review is 100% true and the response on Goggleis a lie. The response seems as though they know and just don't care. It has been reported to both the ACLU and CAIR. Obviously racist/discriminatory behavior by a manager at Wally's on MESA, is fine with whoever responded. There are the two minors as witnesses, but two other adults as well. This restaurant humiliated and traumatized a child who did nothing to be asked to leave simply because of this organization's practice of ignorance and discrimination. Went in the drive-thru and ordered the crispy chicken sandwich and fries. The chicken on my sandwich was tepid, and not at all crispy. The breading was like it was dunked in a flavorless flour paste. Frustrated, I took the sandwich apart and scraped off the breading. It was fortunate I did, as there was a piece of gristle running down the center of the chicken breast. After dismantling the entire sandwich and reassembling it sans breading and fat, I took another bite to discover it was so dry, it was hard to swallow. I don't remember anything about the bun or toppings because I was already so disappointed. The fries were good, so I have to give them a hand for that. Hot and perfectly crispy, except one errant fry that somehow managed to be frozen inside. I live close, so maybe I'll go here again and try a different sandwich...but probably not. read more

Today I had a great experience at Wally's Burger Express, which is conveniently located right off of Mesa Drive. It all started when I walked in the door. I was instantly greeted by 2 very friendly workers, who both had large smiles on their faces. They sure did seem to like their job. They gave me a warm welcome, which I really appreciated. They thanked me for my order and my business. They get an A+ for customer service, that's for sure. The restaurant (including the bathroom) was very clean and I received my meal quickly. This is the type of place where you order at the counter, take a number and then they drop your meal off at your table. I prefer this over having a waiter because I'm cheap and don't always want to tip, especially if I'm just grabbing a quick burger. The burger size was much bigger than I expected. I would compare the size to a Hilbert's burger probably. Much bigger than P. Terry's. It was loaded with vegetables, and was really good. Some burger joints skimp on the veggies, and I like how Wally's loaded 'em on. The burger meat was cooked to perfection and the bun was grilled. It was good. I ate it all and I left full. For just over 7 bucks, I had the combo that included a large, loaded cheeseburger, fries and a drink. I think that drink they gave me was a whopping 44 oz! Huge cup. More than I could drink in a week. This is random, but I like that they serve Heinz ketchup and have them in bottles on the table. I like a lot of ketchup, and prefer to have a bottle all to myself. Some restaurants have the ketchup packets, or P. Terry's has the pump action with the paper cups. The bottle works best for me, so I got lucky on this one. If you enjoy a good burger, check this place out. It's not that far off Mopac. If you like to "Keep Austin Weird" than this could be a double win for you because this is a mom and pop shop and has been in the same family forever. And ever. And ever. Late night dinner a few weekends ago. I've driven by Wally's many times but I've never eaten there. It's in a nice neighborhood but it always looked...worn down. My husband recalled them having awesome burgers though. We both got chicken tender meals. They were alright. You know how some chicken tenders have very little breading and then some are so thin in places that when they are over-cooked it's like gnawing on each bite? Mine were kind of like that. Pretty disappointing. To make my late-night meal extra unhealthy I also had a milkshake, which was damn good, y'all. I couldn't decide whether to get chocolate or butterscotch so the guy at the counter recommended THAT I MIX THE TWO. Whaaaaaat?! Heck yeah, I mixed them. So, overall, the food was meh, the milkshake was tasty goodness. I'll try more of their food next time but will pass on the chicken tenders. Gawwwleeeeeeee Wallllyyyyyyyyyy (what a let down...) I was under'Wall"med. I am only reviewing the burgers and fries. I don't know that I was "Wally-Banged" today but I sure hope that has no reference to anything related to "Leave it to Beaver" or anything. Puns once again intended and painfully on schedule. The service was fast and friendly. The bag we got had more grease all over it than the contents though. We paid 15 dollars for 2 meals that had tiny thin slices of burger meat. The buns were just okay. At least it was not like the burger itself was so thin that we thought we were eating beef flavored buns like at some of the burger competition. That is never a good thing. I would never order a double burger because the meat was so very thin and cost nearly ten dollars for the combo (totally not worth the expense). We could have paid a few extra dollars elsewhere and gotten a much more substantial lunch. The fries were the size of McD's but were barely salted and had little to no flavor. They required a ketchup makeover or whatever you would want to put on your potatoes. I am sure the chicken and shakes are good, but nothing we ordered had any sort of "wow, Wally" factor, and it was not impressive enough for me to return. The food tasted clean and fresh, but there was something lacking. The patties had either a microwaved or boiled taste when I prefer the grilled taste. Also, be careful because the drive through is immediately on your right, and some people did not enter well into the area. Plus, there was trash (misc. litter, cokes, food debris) all over the parking lot. Not very pretty despite the mentioned renovation. They may have cutesy little quips and quirky names/slogans for some of their ice creams and menu items, but nothing stood out here. : / I give it 3 stars because it is local, and I sure don't want to see a Sonic, Carl's JR, or a Jack In The Box be put in Wally's place, and it seems like there are many loyal customers, which I appreciate too. I had never been to or heard of Wally's before today. My boyfriend and I happened to find it on the GPS and decided to go for it because of the great reviews we saw here. Frankly, I was unimpressed. The burgers were alright, but I've had better. The fries were okay, but they were nothing special. Their shakes were the only part of the meal that I enjoyed, and even that was too sweet. For the slightly higher prices, it simply wasn't worth it. I have heard that their chicken is the best, so I'll probably try this if I ever find myself going back to Wally's (which is unlikely). read more

I went there once before the remodel and now I have been to Wallys twice since the remodel. The food is the same from what I remember, but the atmosphere just doesn't feel quite right now. The one way entrance and exit that is separated is slightly annoying if you are sitting outside and want to come in for a refill, but I guess not that many people sit outside. Also the parking lot is tiny for the amount of seating that is inside. On to the food, the regular burger and frys are adequate, nothing special here, but nothing bad either. The fry size is large compared to some other places, so if you are into the fry belly go ahead. The Styrofoam cups kind of annoy me, but they are everywhere in this town. I really wish we could get rid of them and be a little less polluting. Now that I work very near here, I am sure I will be going more often, so expect a review update in the near future. read more

I have only been here twice, but I think their fries are among my favorite fast food fries already! Granted, I'm pretty picky with my papas fritas. As Sam would say, I like the "bendy ones". I also like them fairly thick cut (no shoestrings, please) and well salted. Wallys' serves them up just like that. Hot and delicious. As far as the chicken tenders that I've seen a few reviews raving over, I was not as impressed as other patrons seem to be. The chicken lacked seasoning, too me. The tenders were nice cuts, though, and the breading was crispy. But the pieces are small for what you shell out for the meal (around $7.5 for a combo, if I remember correctly). The dinner roll is nice and yeasty, but mine was cold, which totally kills it. Wally's food is great if you're craving a burger and fries or a chicken strip basket, but where they really shine is their malts, shakes and Wallybangers! I love the chocolate malt (NOT the same as a shake!!) and the cookie dough Wallybanger is also off the charts good. A wonderful family place that has great employees and service on top of amazing ice cream treats. read more
