They don't have just your usual bland glasses, there are a great variety of new stylish choices. Some glasses for more bold fashion (see photo) and others for hardy work wear. RJ has a knowledgeable staff and works with multiple insurance needs. We often replace lens, get sunglasses and buy new glasses for what you might spend for one pair in other places. I can simply hand them my prescription and know things will be handled in a week or so, but usually a few days later I'll get the call to come pick up my glasses. For my newest pair ( clear frames) I really wanted a specific frame, they worked with me until I was happy. They offered to order whatever frames I wanted even if they weren't in the store. They processed an authorization with my insurance before my visit, so all I had to worry about day of was my co-pay. Even though I had an appointment, I was waiting over a half hour to be seen, which was a bit frustrating but I understand delays can happen. Getting a call in advance would have been nice, though, as I was missing work trying to make this appt. Dr. David Bowin was great! He didn't try to sell me on anything I didn't need. The whole office is clean and set-up with what's needed for an eye exam. The staff were friendly and I was able to schedule my next appt a year out before I left!

However, when I showed up for my appointment, I was told I had to take a mandatory retinol eye exam in order for the doctor to see me. There was no prior mention of this charge when I made the appointment, and it felt misleading and frustrating. I agreed to it reluctantly because I had already waited so long for my appointment, and I needed my eye exam. During the exam, the doctor and I discussed contacts and he recommended I stay on them since glasses tend to make me dizzy. He checked my eyes and told me my prescription hadn't changed. I left with my prescription and assumed everything was fine. Fast forward 6 months, and I realized I couldn't find my prescription. I called to ask if they hey could simply print me a new one, only to be told that I never had a contact lense exam, which was an additional charge. They also told me that I'd need to redo my full eye exam (which is only covered by insurance) to get the prescription, and that would cost upwards of $150. I was confused especially since I specifically talked to the doctor about my contacts during my appointment, and he told me that my prescription hadn't changed. I also felt blindsided by the additional costs. To make matters worse, when I called my insurance company, they confirmed that retinol eye exams should be optional, not mandatory, and this offices policy seemed unusual. When I explained this to the receptionist, she was incredibly rude, and honestly I ended up crying. I've never felt so disrespected and confused by a healthcare provider. This was the most disorganized and uncaring experience I had at an eye doctor's office. I would never recommend this place to anyone, and I regret going here.

Having an 'appointment time' was very welcomed with my schedule. Lisa quickly sized up the problem, put together a plan and within a few minutes, my previously 'overwhelming processes ' was completed, all the while we joked about early '80's pop culture. Then she wouldn't take money from me! I was completely taken aback by the whole experience, and I found myself looking for ways to pay it forward after leaving her shop. Without the lens, she could not see. This became a crisis and threatened to ruin the visit completely. The next day was a rainy Christmas Eve. Many optical outlets were closed for the holidays. Desperate, we went to the few that opened (but would close early), in hope of obtaining emergency contact lens that would fit her prescription. Our hope dimmed after several unsuccessful attempts. Fortunately, Michael's Optics in San Luis Obispo was open, and welcoming. Even though they did not have the lens on hand, the staff went out of their way to call nearby optics outlets to inquire on our behalf. It was not looking good. But, incredibly, an outlet that they called actually responded with a 'yes', and we were able to promply pick up the much needed lens, with the correct prescription. This was*indeed a Christmas miracle. I can't thank enough the staff at Michael's Optical San Luis Obispo. They gave us valuable assistance even though they were only hours from closing for Christmas. They made no revenue from us, but they certainly saved Christmas for us. This review is written as a heart-felt thank you to the wonderful staff on duty that day. May they have a happy New Year!
