A great hole in the wall joint. A couple friends and I dropped into this bar while trying to escape the record heat in Manhattan. Turns out this place is loaded with Marines and Marine paraphernalia. This was awesome since my buddy that was with me was a Marine. Very pleasant surprise indeed. The beer was cold and reasonably priced and the service was friendly and fast. My only real complaint is the bathrooms were pretty disgusting. I may not come back again but I enjoyed my brief experience at Walter's Bar. read more

Some friends and I went there last Thursday for karaoke. It was great! The wait was long but there were a lot of singers so there's no way around that. The karaoke DJ didn't waste any time playing music between singers. He also didn't sing himself. There's nothing worse than waiting an hour to sing and the DJ singing songs. The rotation seemed fair. No one sang several times while we waited to sing once. I was shocked by how many great singers there were there. I am used to one or two good singers and a bunch of really bad singers. Came here for a friend's birthday and was very underwhelmed. The positives are that the bartenders are friendly...the place has a welcoming feel and the prices are affordable. HOWEVER the drinks are affordable because they legitimately put no alcohol in their mixed drinks. I started off with the $6 well whiskey and coke and was able to chug it as it tasted just like soda. I figured it was because it was cheap so I moved on to my go to for liquor...Long Island Iced Tea. However I was disappointed as I watched him fill it up half way with coke. An LIT is only supposed to have a splash of coke and half way is just ridiculous. I then settled on to beer and shots which was providing a good time. I was set to give this bar 3 or 4. HOWEVER. ..they have a beautiful juke box...one that attaches to an app I already have. Well I guess they didn't like my song choice because after buying 10$ worth of credits I made it half way through one song before they turn off the juke box and played their own music. If your bar is going to have a jukebox and people put in money it is ROBBERY to turn it off at your whim. Sorry you don't like my songs....don't get a jukebox. Long story short if you're looking for some beer and shots stop in...I personally will never return to this bar as I don't like money being taken from me for nothing. read more

I was w/ coworkers at our regular after hours spot.The bartender was feeling himself tonight. Out of character I'm carded (OK, I'm really ok w/ that) He's pushing up on a few other people. I dance with 1 of 2 brothers that are dressed more street than the rest of the crowd but seem harmless. I sit next to them &talk. Beside me, my coworker,a brother dressed unassuming& nonthreatening.The bartender rushes up & asks them to leave if they aren't drinking.They reply that they are waiting for their friend & then they will drink then. The bartender gets in the face of one of the guys. The young brother keeps his composure. He won't leave bc he's done nothing wrong. Another guy whom I had given my number to weeks prior stands w/ the bartender. The bartender lays hands on the brother to force him out. They were like 2 good ole boys. Yes there were other Blacks there. We were dressed a certain way & non threatening. I hadn't drank yet nor was I being thrown out & the cops sicked on me. Never again! read more

Coming from Wisconsin, the land of the townie bar, this place was an excellent NYC equivalent. Just a nice little watering hole to pass some time after a day of touring or working. read more

Was told by the bartender repeatedly that I was wrong for arguing that a patron shouldn't loudly call mentally disabled people "retarded." The bartender then become personally aggressive towards me and continued to be aggressive even after I began crying due to his use of the term "retarded." I've never felt so unsafe in Manhattan. I was worried for my safety and for his seeming happiness associated with yelling at a patron (myself) who is over ten years younger than he is for no reason other than his own ego. I eventually was forced to leave because of his continued animosity. He seemed to be attempting to argue that the use of that word, whatever the context, was acceptable because he had a Catholic background. When I explained my personal qualms with the term, he laughed and tried to disapprove of me. I was overwhelmed with the horrible terms of this situation and hope the bartender is let go, as I ended up crying for hours over the fact that he insisted it was okay for his friend to use the word "retarded."
