First time in. Very cool place. We were met and seated by the owner Carla. Very nice and efficient. We ordered mimosas and blintzes for an app. Normal order is 3 but they only had two so they took 1/2 off. I had the biscuits and gravy. The gravy was great with chunks of sausage. The top of the biscuit was very good as well but not sure what happened to the bottom as it was almost impossible to cut. The same thing happened with the English muffin on the Benedict's. My GF couldn't cut the bottom slice. But all still very good. Will definitely be back to try dinner. read more

We had such an amazing experience at Wandering Vine for date night! From the moment we arrived, the atmosphere completely set the tone it truly feels like dining in a beautiful, historic castle straight out of a fairytale. The ambiance alone makes this place so special and perfect for a romantic evening. We started with cocktails and a few appetizers, and everything was absolutely delicious. The focaccia bread was fresh and flavorful, and the oysters, lamb ribs, and shrimp cocktail were all outstanding. You can really tell the quality and care that goes into every dish. The fig and burrata salad was a highlight definitely a must-try and the chestnut soup was warm, rich, and comforting. For our entrées, we had the filet mignon and seafood cavatelli, both cooked perfectly and full of flavor. What truly stood out, though, was the service. The owners personally came by each table, which made the experience feel so welcoming and genuine. It's those thoughtful touches that really elevate a dining experience. We ended the night with dessert, and it was the perfect way to wrap up an already incredible evening. Everything from start to finish exceeded our expectations. What a fun place for brunch to celebrate my birthday. I was hoping to get the steak and eggs, but were surprised and told that they just updated the menu that menu, and sadly--steak and eggs was no longer on there. I ordered a classic breakfast and we had a couple of mocktails. A spiced pear and a berry one. Food was great, and so was service. My group of six recently dined at Wandering Vine at the Castle and overall had a fantastic experience. The food was outstanding across the board. I ordered the Caesar salad, duck confit croquettes, and the tuna steak, and every single dish was excellent. The Caesar was crisp and well-balanced, the duck confit croquettes were rich, crispy, and full of flavor, and the tuna steak was perfectly cooked and beautifully presented. You can really tell there's care and creativity going into the kitchen here.The atmosphere is beautiful and unique, and it feels like a great spot for both special occasions and a nicer night out. From start to finish, the experience felt elevated and enjoyable. The only downside came at the very end when our server was splitting checks for our group. Despite us explaining multiple times who had what, items kept getting mixed up, which made the checkout process a bit longer and more frustrating than it needed to be. It didn't ruin the night, but it was a noticeable hiccup in an otherwise smooth evening. That said, the quality of the food and overall experience far outweighed that small issue. It was our first time there and we weren't sure what to expect. It was a nice atmosphere, we loved looking around at the castle and were curious about the history but also just wanted to enjoy our brunch together. It seemed that if you engaged, it was a long conversation. The food was good, I got the eggs Benedict which was good except the bottom of the muffins were so tough I could barely cut through them. Do not eat at Wandering Vine! An hour before our prepaid reservation of $324.38, we were involved in a car wreck. After getting off the phone with 911, my husband immediately called the restaurant to explain what happened and ask for a solution: restaurant credit, another day, anything reasonable. Carla Dyer, the owner, said there would be no refund, no credit, and no alternative. We were told we needed to show up or forfeit our money. So we showed up. We live three minutes from where the wreck occurred and about twenty minutes from the restaurant. We grabbed clothes, got in a Lyft, and arrived shaken but trying to honor a reservation we had already paid for in full. Once seated, the adrenaline wore off. I had hit my head during the wreck and became nauseated. We asked again, calmly, if there was any flexibility given the circumstances. Instead of working toward a solution, Carla came to our table and yelled directly in my husband's face. My husband is Black, Carla is white. We decided to leave. The only disruption was caused by her. There was no safety concern, no unpaid bill. Yet she followed us outside and called the police. Calling police on a Black man who has paid in full and is choosing to leave is not a neutral act. It carries weight and it escalates risk. It is intimidation. If this is how ownership handles a couple who experienced a car wreck an hour before dinner, imagine how they handle anything else. Have you ever wanted to eat/drink in a castle? How about on your birthday for brunch?! Well, I did! This is a fantastic little place. Great staff that was weaving all over the place, ensuring that everyone felt like they were taken care of. I wanted to explore this fantastic-looking place, and if I thought I could have done so without getting in the way of other guests, I would have. Yes, that is right... snuck through doors into the basement and climbed stairs to the upper turrets... the whole thing! There is only one thing to ask for out of this, and that is some pictures of what it was before it had been revamped into a venue/restaurant! But, as it is, I love the look and feel of this place. You may be asking if I was so enthralled with the place that it didn't get all five stars? The BnG's I ordered had a sausage gravy. I adore sausage gravy, and there is not enough of it in the world. But this was made with SWEET sausage. And that has NO place with Biscuits and Gravy. This is likely a chef-made choice, and some will love this. I'll order something different next time. read more

Growing up in this area, I have wanted to go inside this building for YEARS, and up until about a year ago I had no idea that this had a restaurant inside! We finally came to try it out on a Friday evening, for a birthday treat for my significant other. The inside is so cute, I absolutely loved the dining area and we were seated up the stairs, so we got a view of the whole place. They had a butt in almost every seat downstairs, only a few tables filled out upstairs. I am not a wine person, but if you are they have a ton of flight options, and a very extensive wine list. I ordered a cocktail that had a floater of wine in it, it was delicious. For appetizers we did the bread service which was fresh foccacia with oil and butter, and we ordered the calamari. Highly recommend both, they were so good! The calamari was unlike any calamari app ive ever ordered, its definitely in my top 3 calamari I've had. The roasted shishito peppers were delicious. For our main course, I got the Veal Osso Bucco. It was so tender, the polenta paired well with it and the brussels were nice and crispy! My significant other ordered the NY Strip steak with potatoes and Cornbread. He loved the cornbread, and the steak was cooked well with a veal demi glace on it. The potatoes were kind of bland, just roasted/flash fried fingerling potatoes, needed a sauce or something for them. Service got really slow towards the end of our meal, it took quite awhile from us getting our food for our server to come back and check on us, but I think they may have been a little short staffed the night we came in. We tried the lemon sorbet for dessert, it seemed like it had been sitting quite awhile and it was very icy throughout. For the most part we had a great experience, the staff was very nice and I believe the owners themselves bring out dishes to the tables as well! Mother's Day brunch at Wandering Vine at the Castle was a very nice experience. We had made reservations a few weeks ahead of time so we had a very short wait for our table. Since it was a special occasion, we did have to prepay when we made the reservation, but that made the meal pretty easy bc we didn't need to grab our waiter or ask for our check when we decided to leave. They had a few options for your apps/entree/dessert which was nice. We all tried different things and all were tasty. A nice touch was they had a centerpiece on each table that looked like a small purse filled with flowers, and the owner stopped by each table and told the moms to take the centerpiece with them when they left. We were seated in the upstairs area, which was really cozy and probably less noisy than the downstairs was, so that was very nice. All in all it was a great experience and I recommend giving it a try. read more

I will never dine at Wandering Vine at the Castle ever again. We had arranged a reservation for Valentine's Day. Less than an hour before our reservation, my wife and I were involved in a car crash. Thankfully, no one was seriously injured, but we were in no condition to be able to enjoy the reservation. I called the restaurant to request a refund, gift card, or something similar. The owner got on and told me no. I asked if there was any way we could reschedule or come back a different night, and the owner again said no, we had to be there *that* night. We had already spent over $300 to secure the reservation, and to leave that on the table felt like a major waste. Because we felt we had no other choice, we reluctantly decided to move forward with the reservation as planned. We were in such a rush to get to the restaurant that we didn't have time to change at home. My wife had to change in the backseat of the Lyft we took and I changed at the restaurant bathroom. When we got to the restaurant (after I changed clothes from the crash), we were escorted upstairs to a table on the second floor. We sat and waited for the food. When the first course came out, I tried to eat something, but it quickly became clear that neither of us were in the headspace to enjoy our dinner. We were both still in shock from the crash. My wife asked to speak to the owner once more because she was feeling nauseous. When the owner arrived, I explained that we weren't in a good space to enjoy the food and asked one more time for a refund. At this point, the owner got into my face and began berating me about how we wouldn't get our refund because of their policy. My wife, matching the owner's energy said "Then we will be contacting a lawyer." The manager stormed off. I ordered a Lyft to take us home, we gathered our things, and started to walk downstairs and out of the restaurant. As we were walking out, the owner is standing by the door with the phone in her hand. I soon realize that she is calling the police on us despite the fact that 1) we had already paid, and 2) we were in the process of leaving. The owner followed us outside and stayed on the phone until the first of three police officers showed up. We explained the situation to the officers, who went on to inform us that the owner was having a trespass order issued against us. It was insulting enough that the owner refused to offer a refund or allow us to come back another night. It felt racist for the owner to call the police on us when we had done nothing wrong and were actively leaving the restaurant. Spend your money elsewhere. Especially if you're Black or an interracial couple, it's evident that you're not welcome at Wandering Vine at the Castle. read more

Beautiful place. Decorating done so well, Evoking a castle feel without being at all cluttered. Service was excellent. Greeted by the owner who seated us and then explained the menus and gave us short history of the building. Very personable and welcoming. The food was excellent. The lobster tails on the seafood pasta were perfection. I don't know that I've ever had lobster tails that weren't just a little tough in part. These were lovely soft perfectly cooked and tender throughout. For entrees we had the seafood pasta and the salmon Wellington. The pastry was so nice on the Wellington and the salmon and mushroom went surprisingly well together. For appetizers the calamari and the crab arancini.The calamari was again perfectly cooked and the crab arancini delicate and delicious. The chef (and co-owner, husband and wife) is a master hand at seafood! For dessert we had the red velvet lava cake- decadent and rich! Limited seasonal menu but varied enough to find something you'll love. It was a lovely dinner in a beautiful setting. And not incredibly overpriced like so many restaurants around the city are getting to be. Gonna cost more than longhorn but not even close to the exhorbitance of Hereford house or 1589 or others, and you get excellent unhurried personal service with great food. I took my daughters to a Saturday Royal Tea at Wandering Vine and we loved it! The March menu was a fun take on Irish foods, such as Reuben croissant sandwiches, bangers and mash scones, and Bailey's Irish Cream tarts. We each ordered our tea of choice and were served with a tower of wonderful treats. Cocktails and wine flights are also available for purchase in addition to the tea service. The price is reasonable at $38.50. We left plenty full after the noon sitting. They also offer a 3:00 sitting. The building is gorgeous and has a nice patio for warmer weather. GET OFF THE VINE AND GET INSIDE: @wanderingvinekc exceeded my expectations. I heard very mixed reviews (and you guys know I'm very opinionated with foodie things) and I'm happy to say it was an amazing experience. I got the seafood cavatelli and Jonathan got the 8oz filet mignon. My pasta was exceptional, the sauce was perfect, and the various seafood was fresh and seasoned beautifully. I don't know if the pasta was homemade but it definitely tasted like it was. LET'S SAY IT TOGETHER it's hard to find good seafood in KC!!!!!! and Monkfish is one of my favorite scary looking fish to eat! It's honestly so good. Jonathan's steak was the best steak I've ever had in the city.. and that's huge because I think it's better than some other local favorites and those are incredible too. They cooked his steak a perfect rare. The roasted carrots were so good. They maybe could have used a minute longer in the oven but they were great. Shrimp was awesome (don't know why it was yellow though?). Bread was perfect but not enough butter and I don't know why there was a random tablespoon of olive oil on the plate? No salt, pepper, or balsamic in it.. just a straight table spoon of oil which definitely wasn't enough for 4 giant slices of bread haha. See guys I'm nitpicking because it really was a spectacular dinner. Wine was amazing!!! Their wine list was a show stopper. Also the service was fantastic. Our waiter knew so much about everything on the menu, was attentive, and kind without being overbearing. Just perfect like Goldilocks (she's the one with the bears right? lol). And often you will get one of the owners to come by and offer to tell you the story of the building and the restaurant. Built in 1905-7 this castle has had many lives. From humble beginnings as a family home, to sanitarium, to night club to haunted house to finally restaurant. I enjoyed reading and researching the history. Being a lover of the late 1800's to early 1900's history, this place has been on my radar. So when hubs asked where to celebrate my birthday this year I asked for here. We made reservations online through their website for a Wednesday. My hubs called in early afternoon day if to ask a few questions.....good thing he did because they could not find our reservation! He spoke with Carla ( owner) and she then made our reservation. On Wednesday's they have a guitarist who plays jazz mixed with a little blues. He was very good. Upon arrival we were greeted by the owner ( Carla) and given a brief explanation of the wine offerings. The waiter Calvin informed us they had a new chef and some of the options on the menu were not available. We started with a wine flight (Old world red) and some appetizers, fried olives ( because I was intrigued) and house made focaccia bread. The wines were a nice pairing ( Italy, France & Spain ). The focaccia bread was delicious with the garlic infused oil and pesto. The stuffed olives are fixed tempura style, and I found them boring. Not my favorite. For our entree I had the Pan-seared scallops and hubs had the chicken pot pie. The scallops were seared perfectly but unfortunately a little cold when brought out. The pairing with the citrus, radishes and peas made for an attractive presentation and a very interesting combination. It may have been intentional for scallops to be lukewarm since the garnish was cold but I prefer them hot. My hubs said the pot pie was tasty and basically what you would expect of a pot pie. Knowing in advance it was my birthday, the waiter brought out a flower arrangement with a little sparkler at the end of our meal. Then left with it to light for another table. No offering of a free dessert. I came expecting to be blown away and left underwhelmed. For me it's a " one and done" . Beautiful atmosphere and ambiance. That's the real seller here. Definitely a special occasion place but unfortunately not one I'm dying to comeback to. read more

It's not often that I leave a bad review. I've been sitting on this for about a month, deciding if it warrants a negative review -- ultimately, I'd like to prevent someone else from choosing the tea time at Wandering Vine. Their tea time is about $54 per person, plus a mandatory 20% tip charged in advance. We had a reservation, but when we arrived, we had to wait around for a while until someone finally led us to our table. Okay, fine. The tea itself was just okay -- it tasted like a cheap tea bag, similar to Lipton. When the food came out, we were really disappointed. As you can see, it looked decent, but the salmon tasted rancid. They also placed strawberries on the same plate as the salmon, so when I ate a strawberry, it was covered in fish juice. No scones -- instead, they served some kind of flat pastry, and they didn't even bring enough for everyone at the table. The service was incredibly lackluster. Our server clearly didn't want to be there. When we asked for a second cup of tea, he told us it would be an additional charge. Perfect... I've never seen another tea time do this, and this is one of the more expensive ones I've been to. Overall, I was really disappointed with both the food and the service. I've done other tea times before and have been really impressed elsewhere. I highly recommend checking out Kate Smith Soirée instead. read more

A castle whaaaatt!! This castle was originally built in 1904-1906 as someone's place of residence!! It had 12 bedrooms in it, wow! Such a great ambience of architecture and stone in here! Service was great here as well! Food came out at a great time and everything was soo good and filling lol. You have to try their stuffed French toast!! The in-laws brought my wife and I here for our annual Christmas dinner and we were disappointed with our experience at Wandering Vine. Having never been here before, we were expecting an atmosphere that would be a little nicer than an ordinary restaurant, but instead the entire dining room was loud due to a large party going on above the dining room. The upstairs area is not closed off at all, so when there is a loud party with a drunk Santa, everyone in the restaurant has to listen to it. It appeared to bother several other people that were eating in the main dining room as well. On top of the atmosphere being disappointing, the quality of food did not match up with the prices (the steaks were overcooked), and our waitress did nothing to help improve the night. Our waitress showed no emotion the entire night and seemed less than enthusiastic to be working that night. She also spilled water on our table multiple times, dropped utensils on the floor and spilled ice onto our plates, all without offering any apologies and leaving us to clean up after her each time. For the only positive of our experience, the restaurant is absolutely beautiful inside and we had a nice table close to the fireplace. While we were disappointed with our visit to Wandering Vine, I'm sure the restaurant would be fine if you're not going there expecting to have an intimate holiday dinner. read more

Holy YUM! Who knew you could eat a delicious meal in a castle in Shawnee?! It was so warm and cozy from the moment we walked in. I knew our meals were going to be delicious but I fell head over heels for the Lobster Cavatelli! The pickled mustard seed on the 5oz Lobster tail was such an amazing touch. The dish also featured golden beets and hand rolled pasta cooked to perfection. My husband went for the KC strip, asparagus with hollandaise and smashed potatoes. The steak was cooked perfectly at medium rare and the hollandaise paired deliciously with the asparagus. Wandering Vine has a selection of wine flights for any palette. I chose the Sommelier's Selection which had a light white, medium bodied red and a full bodied red to finish off. The service was stellar! Randee was such a gem and was an excellent server, she made us laugh and had a wonderful sense of humor. Although I have to say when we checked in I did get a little surprised by the dog statue...since I wasn't paying attention, for a moment, I could have sworn it was a real dog. And was about to embarrass myself getting very giddy over a "puppy!!!". Anyway, we were seated quickly...and then we waited. The downside of a restaurant in a converted castle is that the servers had to go up and down stairs to cover everyone. That being said we just chatted until the bartender came by go get our drinks for us - I ordered a Manhattan and my man got some type of beer. We thought it was a IPA but ended up tasting more like a larger? (I don't know beers sorry). We ended up ordering the steamed mussels and soup of the day (was NE Clam Chowder) to start. The mussels were delicious, steamed perfectly and the nduja butter really popped. The chowder was excellent from the few bites I was able to steal from him. Appetizers were followed by the duck for me and lamb pot pie for him. I was definitely surprised by the figs but once paired with everything together in a bite it worked! I did NOT try the lamb pot pie as I'm not usually a fan of lamb unless its in Indian food - but my man loved it so I'll take his word for it. Dinner at the castle (the building looks like a miniature castle). It has an interesting history. We pulled into the circle driveway upon entry and parked in the rear lot. Entry was kind of weird in that there is no obvious hostess station upon entry. It's to your right--at the bar. I would change that. We were seated at a table on the second level. The waiter came by quickly. He was great throughout the night in answering questions and making recommendations. Other than not knowing where to go upon entry, the only other area for improvement would be temperature of the food. The calamari was very good. Our entrees were not as hot as desired. I ordered the artic char entree which included the skin-crisped fish with barley, apple and pomegranate. Loved the flavors, but it would have been better at a warmer temperature. She ordered the filet mignon with Brussels sprouts and new potatoes. With all the talk about loud dining rooms, this was very comfortable for conversations. This is such a gem of a restaurant. We came here for Sunday brunch and sat outside. The patio is lovely, and the interior of the restaurant is beautiful as well. Our server was very kind and attentive. She checked on us several times during the meal. The food was delicious. I enjoyed the lamb hash, and my husband had the biscuits and gravy. We also shared a cinnamon roll, which was so delicious. Hands down one of the best brunch spots that I've been to in the KC area. We did not try any of the wines on their extensive list, but I look forward to coming back here for dinner so that I can taste some of their wines and dinner entrees! read more

Definitely a different vibe and good venue but if we're talking about food and customer service, I would say there's a lot of recommendations as a customer I would put forth. We had an appointment put well in advance (especially since it was the first time with our baby, which was put in the note whilst getting an appointment) to celebrate an occasion but there were no preps made prior to it which was a little disappointing. In regards to food, we ordered the arancini as the appetizer, Caesar salad and Castle Burger for the main course. It took them forever to bring the food to the table and with a baby, it was something that no parents want to look forward to. We asked the associates to get the food faster due to the baby but it took more than an hr even after the request, which lead to us having to pack them, hence unable to enjoy a celebratory lunch. The castle burger had candied bacon which gave flavor but overall was mediocre, the arancini was less in quantity but flavorful and the salad lacked quantity with the chicken undercooked and tasted raw. The wine was exceptional and would definitely go more for that reason. Price is higher and customer service has room for improvement. read more

Absolutely beautiful in every way. Gorgeous setting. Beautiful day so sat on the terrace overlooking the gardens. Here today for brunch. Nice menu and very reasonably priced. Salmon Benedict with homemade English muffins was my choice. Belgian waffles was his. Two wine flights so pretty I went home with glasses and stands to try to recreate.
