I actually like this little "hole in the wall" spot. You'll miss it if you don't know what to look for. Biggest piece of advice: ALWAYS CALL AHEAD! they are extremely busy. The restaurant is clean and decorated. The hostess is personable and very professional. The food is AMAZING! I tried a Deep South classic, chitterlings with rice and gravy and mac and cheese. Definitely flavorful, perfectly seasoned. It was about $18 and the portions are hefty. There's enough for at least 2-3 plates. So, totally worth the price. This little spot is worth the visit. We went to get some soul food from this establishment and waited an hour and our food never came out. Many people came after us ordered and received food. The women at the counter kept telling me it's coming. Whe I finally approached the counter to ask what the problem was, she went into the kitchen to find out but I got to no explanation and she stated it's coming. 2 min later my husband asked what's the problem and he got it will be out in a min he asked what's a min and she 5 minutes. I have came a few times but this most recent time is where the review is coming from! I always start my soul post talking about my soul food test. You all that follow me know, how i feel about place that call themselves soul food restaurants. This place did ok with the test, i have had better from them. The test consist of Fried wings mac and cheese and collards. SO the wings were cooked well, and they are seasoned. Yes, the meat has flavor. Everything was going GREAT until i go to the Mac. I had to take some points off .the Noodles were mega mushy, its was like i was eating mac cheese pudding. Which doesnt sound that bad, but when its suppose to be mac and cheese we might have a problem. But the collards were on point. Like i said i have been to this place before, and they normally hit. I feel bamboozled, I called at 6 :11p.m. and was told my food will be ready in 20 minutes. . I was there until closing at 7 p.m. until my food was ready. That's not a problem though. , I knew they were frying my pork chops fresh and I had two pork chop dinners. I wanted pig feet but they didn't have any that day. The sad part was that all the sides were not good. The cabbage was bland. No meat in it for seasoning. I'm used to soul food cabbage cooked with bacon or smoked meat. I love homemade potato salad so I noticed there was a picture of what looks like homemade potato salad on Yelp... what I got was Walmart , store bought mustard potato salad. We originally were on the hunt for a BBQ place for my husband and saw another restaurant in this strip mall here on Yelp. We were disappointed when we arrived at that place and their open sign was on and we were within the hours of operation but the doors were locked. As we were getting back to our car, a barber from barber shop recommended we check out Wards. So we did, and we made sure to thank him when we left. Wards Soul Food Restaurant has a Cafeteria style counter: bare bones decor... but the food and hospitality more than made up for it. I ordered the baked chicken, which was served over rice with gravy and a choice of 2 sides. I chose potato salad and string beans. My husband ordered the Carolina BBQ with collards and mac & cheese. My chicken was tender and delicious. The potato salad was perfect and the string beans were seasoned just right. My husband enjoyed his meal and said it satisfied his BBQ craving. The portion sizes were large... but since they serve all meals in to go containers, all we needed was a bag to take our leftovers home. The pricing was very budget friendly. Both meals under $10 and we both left full and with enough to have a second meal. Highly recommend checking Wards out. They take call ahead orders also. Great for a hearty lunch with leftovers. Really surprised by this place by all the positive reviews. Well, my experience was not as great. It was the week of my 24 year wedding anniversary, so I called Wards soul food the day prior we were to come in. Spoke to JR and he told me congrats on the anniversary. We called our order in and was told it would be ready in about 10 mins. That was kinda scary (Ill explain later). I ordered the 2 peace chicken wing and 2 peace fish special. It came with fries and I think I had collard greens. My wife had the chitterlings dinner. She said her's was good, that is not the case with me. I figured the food was pre made when JR told me the food would be ready in 10 mins. Now anyone knows it takes longer to fry some chicken, that explains why it was not cooked all the way. The 2 peace fish was not two peaces, it was one broken in half to make two. Not to mention it was not cooked completely. The fries were not cooked all the way also, they wear like eating mashed potatoes with no seasoning. I tried to eat my food by I found myself getting sick after only a couple of bite; it was disgusting. Ill give this place two stars because my wife enjoyed her food, but mine was a nightmare. Sooooooo I stumbled upon this place when I was in the area looking for an apartment......exhausted and bewildered I went inside hoping for a comforting meal to ease my hunger pains. All I have to say is the FRIED FISH IS EVERYTHING!!!!!! I decided to go with the 2 wings & 2 fish platter which came with 2 sides for less than $9.00....boy did it hit the spot! The next time I went in I took my picky kids with me and even they fell in love with the fish & wings. Yummm!! The only meat I eat is fish so when its prepared bad its very disappointing! Wards fried tilapia is absolutely delicious. Its light and crunchy a party in my mouth. Food wasn't great and the wings displayed and what was served were completely different. What they gave us were wingettes, also the combo didn't include a drink so its a separate price for that.
