Port Costa is my new favorite place, and the balance struck between the Warehouse's gritty raucousness, and Bull Valley's vintage charm makes this a destination for all appetites. Start or finish your night at the Warehouse for pool-playing with the locals, jukebox wars (it's always country vs. hip-hop with our group), and cheap frou-frou drinks reminiscent of a hillbilly Spring Break. It's always lots of fun. There is a ton of space in here, and the decor reminds me of an old western saloon with carnival-esque flair. The food menu makes fun of bourgie dishes like "Cheese on a Board" (not to be confused with a cheese board, which sounds so pretentious). And wow, the penmanship on their chalkboard menus is impressive. Throughout the evening, the ominous stuffed polar bear will stare you down from behind his glass case. Sometimes, Port Costa feels so remote you could actually imagine a polar bear wandering through town, before being shot between the eyes, stuffed, and showcased for years to come. read more

Night Visit: Rolled here wit Trillmaster 3000 and the guitarist from At the Drive In. Not as in the cuts as I thought, we strolled through to a bar with a excellent selection of beer options. I started with the Long Island Ice Tea though and it provided a healthy buzz. Then I noticed the Stone IPA 22 oz for $7.00 Dats what I'm talkin' bout! Morning Visit: The local villagers informed us of Breakfast Burritos served at 10 am. I watched a cook stirring the eggs, sausage and other ingredients. I asked him a question and he said nothing. I could feel the music from " The Hills Have Eyes" beating in my heart. I talked with the bartender, Gina, about Horror movies after she scolded Dru for his smartass ways. Next thing I know the cook was walking around selling the burritos @ $5.00 apiece. Could be a bit bigger, but I drank coffee for free so I wasn't trippin. We sat outside, on perhaps old railroad ties forced into service as picnic tables, putting our marlboro lights out in Kirkland Coffee cans scattered about. There were a few proper picnic tables, and some benches repurposed from some other thing, I saw the rusty nails poking out. Don't get me wrong, I liked this place. It's unapologetic, it doesn't give a shit. Some people may have to open their minds more than others. But, yes, it's a drive, on unforgiving roads, so plan on a designated driver or to stay the night in Port Costa. read more

If youre lucky, the bartender will show you their beer cooler. I've been brought back a few times to make a selection when the menu options just weren't doing it. This is my favorite place to order Spaten's Hef - and they usually have the bottles in stock. Extensive beer selection but you might not get your first choice so stare at the two page menu long enough to find a back-up plan. Popcorn sits on the bar from time to time in giant bowls. I like group popcorn. Except that I end up eating all of it. I'm a bad person to share group popcorn with. Does excessive beer drinking lead you wondering where the restroom is? It's in the back of the place, past the store of oddities and a couple arcade games. There are no doors on the ladies room stalls, but perhaps this encourages new friendships. No strangers here! Lots of indoor seating around the bar. Plus the giant round table. Plus someother benches. Outside patio with some wooden benches and chair seating as well. They BBQ and have live music from time to time. Had to much to drink? Don't drive the pretty, windy roads home. Bicyclists will thank you if you crawl across the street to the (former) brothel and get a cheap room ($60-ish). Sheriff's patrol this area on land and sea so be good. Be rowdy if you'd like! At the end of Port Costa you'll stumble on a magical place. A small town near the coast on the hill where it's filled with old victorian styled homes and a small area for eateries like restaurants and bars. The drive to here sure seems like a journey and i recommend anyone to not take it alone or at night since the road gets steep and the hills get higher.... So coming to this place you'll need to have an open mind and also a thirst for steak because thats mainly what they serve. The food is so so. You get endless heaps of bread and an open salad bar station if you decide to go with just that. The menu is short and straight to the point. Unfortunately I tried their shrimp scampi and yes it was scampy. With little to be excited about. Although, the main attraction here is the Beer selection. It was AMAZING. and cheap! Thats what I would give an A+ for. They have over hundreds of it and kept in a fridge of your dreams. The whole place though, is quite amusing and very random as you would find things like a polar bear and elvis presley memorbilia's all over. So much to tell about this place out in the middle of nowhere aka Port Costa, where to start.. The hundreds of beers? The old brothel turned hotel for the Warehouse's drunken patrons? A rockin' patio to relax and get your drink on? All the reviews mention the character of this place, but you've got to see it for yourself. The decor is eclectic as hell, just look at the pictures, where else can you find a gynmormous polar bear with a headless seal at it's feet? I challenge you to find another place, go for it. The beer, ohhhh the beer. I tried Brazillian beer, Peruvian, Belgian, German and others I don't even remember right now. Somewhere during the evening I evidently decided to represent and go PBR, I just can't help myself and it was nice to see good ol' Pabst in the company of all these other stellar worldly beers. The night zipped by and all of a sudden it was morning, where did all the time go? Due to the booze a lot of my memory is a bit hazy, but I do clearly recall having an amazing time and frankly that's all I really need to know. read more

I always consider this place a destination on a medium length afternoon motorcycle ride - I can zip through Tilden, up Bear Creek and take all the backroads to this bar - have a beer and enjoy the view of the water, chat with my friends, drink some water and head home. I've always been kind of grossed out by the polar bear in the glass case - it's just horrifying to me that someone would do that to any living creature and it makes me wonder why they don't buy a dead human body from the "Body Worlds" exhibit to put in there along side the bear. In fact, I always have this sense that if I stay there too long - I'll end up taxidermied and in a glass case too! Can't comment on whether the menu is vegan-friendly or not since I've never bothered to check (I just assume french fries will be the only thing I can eat) - I promise to check next time! read more

After a pre-brunch, 5-mile morning hike I wanted a bloody mary. Bad. We arrived right around their 10 am opening time and the bartender arrived shortly after, looked at the four of us bellied up to the bar, and just said, "seriously?" I think we surprised her with our early bird eagerness. Tough exterior aside, the bartender made us some very tasty bloody marys and warmed up quickly. We didn't have any food, so I can't speak to that, but the bloody marys, the bartender, and the bar's vintage thrift-store style, deserve five decorative stars. read more

A polar bear, Medusa and some bikers walk into a bar... Although it sounds like a tall tale or the beginning of a bad joke, it's actually a bar in Port Costa (east bay near Martinez and Crockett). In case you're not familiar with this small town, there are two ways in and out, both involve narrow, curvy, dark roads. So if you do come here, designate a driver or plan ahead (you need to make the reservation about a week in advance) and stay the night at the Hotel Burlington across the street. The town is about a block long where the street dead ends. The drinks are strong and the women are stronger. This house of oddities has mixed drinks, beer and wine with a crowd consisting of locals, bikers, day trippers and people watchers. Open until 2 AM, last call is at 1:45 AM. Opens at 10 AM daily. There is a giant polar bear that was shot in Alaska in the 60's and made its way to Port Costa as settlement to a hefty bar tab. During the day there is a shop in the back on the way to the restrooms with antiques and random items. Great for large groups. It does get rowdy here on the weekend so don't expect to sip a glass of wine here and have an intimate conversation. Warehouse is not known for its food or customer service so come for the drinks, stay for the "ambiance". This place is not for everyone, but if you enjoy roadside attractions, dives and people watching, it's worth closing down the bar. read more

This bar is one of a kind. I'm having a hard time describing it any other way... I spent like 10 minuets just wondering around looking at all the stuff on the walls. I also spent a good amout of time starting at the polar bear. I think i though that i was in a museam or something. Drinks were good, and the locals were friendly. As good and as WEIRD as it gets. Barbie is more than a character and it sounds like we got her on a good day. We asked her nicely and she let us in to the walk in beer fridge to pick our own beers of the some 100+ choices available. Mmm St. Peter's Creme Ale... Borderline dirty and decrepit, the warehouse is still clean enough to stay a while--don't let the mossy awning or musty smell fool you. I'm not sure what got me the most, the large polar bear taxidermy or the fact the bathroom has no stall covers. Or maybe it was the section with some 30+ chandeliers. Whatever it is, once you've been in there's no turning back. This place is the divey-ist of the divey. (For those of you who never leave Oakland, the place reminds me of Cafe Van Kleef but way, way further down the rabbit hole..) The outdoor patio is great for a late afternoon picnic. If you like a good bike ride (30 mi. r/t), get off at the Pleasant Hill BART and wind your way around the hills. I left the confines of the city to visit friends in the area. They suggested a great place to hang out and have drinks. After a lengthy drive through hillsides and wilderness I wondered where we were going. Finally we arrived in a vacant gravel-paved lot and walked into the Warehouse where there was a line of motorcycles parked among various junkyard items. I could have sworn we were having drinks in someone's backyard. The Warehouse is one of the coolest places I've ever been to. The large chalkboard features thier drink specials and a huge laminated menu lists HUNDREDS of different beers. Really, it was like the yellow pages of beer. Once the gang of us ordered our drinks we went out back and parked on a picnic table. I sipped my drink from a mason jar...classy. There's a view of the bay and freight trains passing by. Other locals who were there brought thier dogs and kids. I felt so relaxed and at ease, but I'm sure it was the drink that helped. I have never seen a place quite like The Warehouse. I'm so glad that it's hidden away and very hard-to-find. I would hate to return here one day and find a Starbucks or a Baja Fresh next door. read more

This is an awesome dive bar in a random part of the bay area that I never thought I would be in. The roads were windy and the parking lot had a nice view of the water. I like how they had lots of different beers from around the world. I had this one German beer that straight up tasted like smoked salmon. The bartenders were nice and the people I met were cool. I like how they had a pool table and all the decorations gave the place a lot of character--especially the polar bear. I also like how it's next to a United States Post Office. read more

This review is 100% specifically for Larry- the most massive douchebag and cu** wagon to ever grace the service industry. My friends and I got to the bar and got ignored for several minutes until this asshat Larry finally comes up and asks what we want. My friend-who is literally the nicest person ever- asked what Larry recommended and Larry straight up dismissed him in the rudest way ever and said "I don't f***ing care man, I'll come back when you figure out what you want." Then we moved to a different spot at the same bar and my friends got drinks from the lady bartender who was fine enough. Then we got ignored some more while these two people fumbled around being trash at bar tending. My friend wanted another drink and after a thousand years, he asked Larry and Larry was like, "well you already closed out and I screamed your name at the top of my lungs to give back your card and no one answered so that's your fault" (essentially). This was a complete lie. We never left that bar and I know I would have heard if this had happened. I was also watching Larry the whole time because I had entered straight murder mode anger levels. I was about to lose every ounce of my shit. The way I'm describing it does not even do justice to what a massive asshole this guy is. He also took drink orders from people and took nine thousand years to get the drinks or just forgot the drinks entirely and had to ask them four more times what they ordered. Hey Larry-- you gotta pick one, bro- either be the biggest, meanest, rudest shit head the bar tending world has ever seen OR be the least talented, least attentive bar tender... you can't be both. Loved coming here and hanging outside with my dog. Got here right at 3 so it wasn't busy at all, drinks were solid, loved the unpretentious atmosphere and how much space/seating there is. Service was great as well. Only reason I give 3 stars is because there aren't any doors on the stalls in the "ladies" bathroom. I get that was a thing in the 90's and early 00's in goth/rave clubs-- but it's 2018 and with already having your restrooms separated by gender, god forbid you also have a disabled patron who may want the slightest bit of privacy. For that reason I probably won't be back which is unfortunate because this bar is a really solid chill place. Would love it if they just had one stall with a door so their disabled patrons or anyone who isn't ok with that feels safer. read more

The Warehouse is a cool unique spot, been there a couple times and I usually have a good time. A couple of friends and I went there last night and I must say, it was disappointing to say the least. The bartenders were horrible, especially Larry (The Asshole). People were waiting forever just to just close out their tabs. It wasn't even really that busy, so I don't understand what the problem was. I will say, Larry has mastered the art of looking busy without actually accomplishing a single thing. We got lost trying to find this place, but it is like stepping back in time. They have so many cool things place throughout the building. I want to go back there and stay at the hotel. My boyfriend said that it is haunted! Man this place gets you drunk! These bartenders are great people filled with so much life. Felt I needed to update this dated review and have nothing but GOOD news about our "not so sleepy" hamlet. The Warehouse Cafe' is serving-up more food, more often with an awesome chef/cook, Bobby Sweet Cheeks, and the always popular live music on Sundays. Bartenders are perfectly suited for the Warehouse which means you really never know what you're going to get, but you'll always end up with a good stiff cocktail. Heavy tipping helps sooth the savage beasts and can move your next round to the front of the queue on Sundays. Food and party environment will never fail to satisfy unless you're just a bit too uptight which is even MORE of a reason to visit Port Costa. The Bull Valley Roadhouse, formerly the BV Restaurant, is teetering on 4-5 STAR Zagat status as they continue to bus-in and please San Francisco foodies. Earl and Sam have transformed the trip to Port Costa into a weekend getaway again. The food and atmosphere is very highline, but warm and inviting. Both the WH and BVR have collaborated with the Burlington Hotel on "Bed & Breakfast" weekend getaway packages. The hotel has been renovated and is cleaner than it has been in many years. They more than satisfy the "breakfast" half of B&B with their own coffee and croissant corner cafe' open weekend mornings (1st Floor of Burlington where Ice Cream Shop used to be back in the days.) SIDEBAR: They also sell their "Port Costa Honey" from local Port Costa hives. I've even seen chickens and goats....what the heck is going on? I suspect you're eating real and super fresh goat cheese and fresh eggs and/or chickens when you dine at the restaurant. Check out my review on their Yelp site. Anyhow, I think you'll find plenty of modern day pirates at this place. (Pirate 2.0s.) It's pretty awesome. On the fringes of society, teetering on the edge of the bay, you'll drink grog with pirates that greet you with insults and a giant stuffed polar bear. Across the street is the historical brothel turned hotel, Burlington Hotel. Warehouse Cafe is the ultimate hideaway spot when you've had enough of the city and want to escape into another world, time, land, etc. By far, my favorite Pirate Scumm Bar. Weirdest bar ever. But I would totally go again. There is a large polar bear watching over the bar, take lots of pictures. And check out the seal. Music is via touch tunes, make sure you have a friend with good taste and at least $10. Drinks are great - huge selection and their specials are awesome. Through the reviews i was really interested to try out the food here and decided to take a drive with my daughter and wife to check this place out. Asoon as I arrived I was givin some dirty looks by people at the bar and was completely ignored by everyone else all with my 19 month old daughter in my arms. Never will i be back to this part of town of Crockett. I later found out this part of town is known for being an old school white only establishment. read more

This is a one of a kind restaurant. It's in the middle of nowhere; but if you want to be in a secluded area for a meal, this is the place to be. This restaurant, bar and the hotel right next door has a lot of history and the workers will be more than happy to tell you about it. The ambiance has a 19th century feel to it with a giant polar bear that is extremely creepy but cool! As for the food, I really enjoy their Alaskan King Crab! It's the best cooked crab that I've ever had and I will always order this whenever I come back here. I would recommend this place to take out on a date or with a group of friends. This place reminds me of that dive bar that I went to see my friend play a set, very chill and relaxed atmosphere. Their selection of bottled beer is very extensive. I don't know how I feel about their mixed drinks though. The chalkboard said they poured doubles unless otherwise asked. I felt nothing, not even a tingle when I drank my fruity drink :T So onto the beers! Felt better at the end of the night :) If you find yourself hungry, make sure you get the NY steak, it comes in a huge slab, smelled delicious and a potato, ayce clam chowder, chili, and salad came with it all for $25. You may be wondering where Port Costa is... I was wondering that exact same thing. It is a tiny town nestled somewhere between Martinez and Crockett. I recently read about the Warehouse Cafe, and then the other night I heard this guy at a bar raving about the place so I knew I just had to check it out. I came on a Saturday night and as I exited my car I heard country music blasting through the doors and a man with a cowboy hat smoking a cigarette outside. I thought to myself... uh-oh, what the hell am I walking into...?? I walk in and head to the bar. I nearly had a heart attack as I was accosted by a GIANT polar bear that looked ready to eat me. I swerved to the left and seated myself at the bar, still reeling from my near death experience. I ordered a Tom Collins and the writing on the wall states "We pour doubles unless otherwise requested." Well, that's my kind of bar and my drink was pretty damn stiff. The bartenders are super friendly, if not a little weird... but that's part of the charm. The other patrons there were friendly and eclectic bunch of people, and that cowboy outside... well he was kind enough to let me bum a smoke. We met a Jerry Garcia look alike and had some interesting conversations that night. I wish I could give them 5 stars because I had such a great time BUT the bartender kept forgetting to grab my husband's beer (I think some of the bottled beers are kept in the back). Surprise! There's no privacy door in the bathroom. On the wall it reads that the Warehouse Caffe was built in 1890 and the restroom doors fell off during 1920s. You will definitely feel very close to your neighbor and even exchange a brief conversation while you go. The crowd that comes here probably live in the small within the vicinity of the town that its located in. Amtrak and shipping trains run through the tracks, while there are small outdoor benches overlooking the bay so you can enjoy the sailboats roaming by. The bar is equipped with a feisty older lady serving you special cocktails to $6 beers. You can also order food and look at the various collectibles hanging from the wall and ceilings. Yes there is a huge 11 foot polar bear in a glass casing. It is a sight to see if you never seen a polar bear up close. Want an adventure and exploring something new? Who doesn't love a bar with a giant stuffed polar bear, outdoor seating and a killer beer list? Granted the massive selection of beers is in bottles but it was so vast and so good that I found it extremely difficult to choose. I had tacos the first time I went and they were filling and tasty. I hear that their prime rib is pretty incredible as well. When they have a band playing, the place is hopping. It has a great and divey ambiance plus it has a super quirky store near the bathrooms.
