I was having an issue with my exhaust (the car sounded like an airplane) and brought it to Warren's Shell. Warren told me it would be $1,000 to replace with OEM parts but he thought the original piece could be welded for $500. I always get a second opinion for any major repairs so I decided to bring it to another shop that had a 5-star Yelp rating. They said they could fix the problem with OEM parts for $800 (cheaper than Warren doing the same) but that welding wasn't an option given the condition. I decided to bring it back to Warren for the $500 welding repair but half expecting him to eventually come to the same conclusion as the other shop and informing me the $1,000 repair with OEM parts was my only option. Not only was he able to fix it without having to purchase OEM parts but it was less work than he anticipated and the final cost was $370. I'm selling my car in a few months so I (hopefully) won't be back but would definitely recommend anyone at least get an estimate from them to see what they can do. read more

I've been going to Warren's Shell Service for over a year for general maintenance and specific repairs for my car. Warren and his team provide honest, professional, and courteous service. Since my car was an older model, there were a variety of issues, and they prioritized which issues were the most important to address. What's worked for me is to come in with an amount which I'm willing to pay to fix my car and to pay that amount in cash; with cash payments, they're more willing to negotiate a lower price and or throw in extra services for less/free. Always quick and no-pressure service. I came here for another oil change (currently $29.95 for non-synthetic oil). They had about an hour queue, so I dropped off my car and had them call me when my car was done. They topped off my fluids and gave me an itemized safety inspection. They tell you upfront what the labor and parts cost estimates are on a sheet of paper and don't pressure you into getting these suggested repairs done at their shop. I noticed my air filter and cabin air filter needed replacing, and I ended up just buying those separately and installing them myself (saving about $50 in the process). Great service. They are tiny, though, so there's almost always a wait. read more

I had a 2000 Taurus go through a rough patch, needing repairs seemingly every few months. This shop was so efficient, communicative, and convenient (located near the Dempster purple line stop). Warren and all of his staff took the time to really listen when I came in with an issue, which was many times as the car was quite the lemon! I can't say I was particularly excited to be on first name basis with a mechanic, but if it had to happen I'm happy it was Warren! I'd recommend this shop even if you live in the city, as the service was so great, and the purple line is walking distance. read more

This review from me is long overdue. I absolutely LOVE Warren's Shell -- they're trustworthy, repairs are on point & very reasonably priced, & the customer service is impeccable. There have been a few times when I thought I'd need a costly repair, or even a repair that's inconvenient, like my recent issue with having a screw in one of my tires that I thought was contributing to a leak. Rather than have me drop it off, Warren (the owner, he's always there) had me pull the car up until he saw the screw in one tire. He pried it out & sprayed water on it to test if the tire was leaking... it wasn't so no repair needed. It was then that he noticed a nail in the other rear tire (I have no idea where I could've driven over these things). He pried it out & sure enough, that tire leaked. He repaired it old school by plugging the hole & using a razor to cut the material. That was it!! Didn't have to leave it there for them to do work & charge me for lots more. He wanted me back in my car so I could go about my day with my kids. He inflated all of the tires AND he inflated my stroller tires, didn't charge a single penny. We just moved into the neighborhood and have used Warren's for several issues with my BMW. Each issue was resolved efficiently at a very reasonable cost. Warren even tried to talk me out of buying a new tire where his margins would be greater. I was in another town and stopped for a cap for the tire valve and they would only sell me a package for $5. My car broke down on a Saturday evening and I almost panicked thinking where I would go. Fortunately, Yelp reviews came to the rescue and I saw Warren's shell service being highly rated. I called up and Chris told me that the shop is closed but I can tow it there and they can take a look Monday morning. When we reached out Monday morning, we got to know that we had a major repair in our hand. The quote that I got was higher than I expected but I didn't expect a problem with my car in the first place. I spoke to Warren and he detailed out the issue and gave me a breakdown on charges. I called another mechanic based on yelp reviews and got a quote from him as well. Unfortunately, Warren had the higher quote. Since there were so many good things about him - we spoke again and was able to agree on a better deal. He did a great job as others had explained and promptly completed the job by the same day. They were very friendly, helpful and took the time to explain everything - which is very important to me. This was the second time in a month that I went to Warren's Service Station for repairs. The first was for a flat tire which was taken care of immediately and then two weeks later for a brake inspection assessment and an oil change. Warren's staff and mechanics were attentive, clear, straightforward, friendly and thorough in explaining their service process. Up to this point I had been taking my Honda Accord to the dealership in Chicago for 6 years for maintenance. I had never given any thought to entrusting my car to an independent car care business. But due to a time crunch I took it to Warren's Auto Service. I was pleasantly surprised as his employees listened to my concerns that morning and I left my car with them and within less than 3 hours they called me at home and simultaneously texted me a summary inspection report with a clear and concise evaluation of the condition of my car's brakes. These 2 experiences have won me over to Warrens for my future auto needs and repairs. I'm not sure I can express how wonderful I think this shop is. I have a bit of a beater for a car, but I'm fond of her, despite all her troubles. I take my car here for everything - oil changes, random warning lights, etc. They are always thorough with their inspections and provide detailed time and price estimates for any work that is recommended. They also are very upfront with the urgency of the recommended repairs, and never make me feel pressured to get any of the services done. Every time I have told them to proceed with recommended services, the total dollar amount has been LESS than they have quoted me. Truly outstanding customer service in terms of explaining what is going on with your car and making you feel comfortable and informed. I even took the inspection sheet on a road trip with me to visit my father, who works on cars as a hobby and he was very impressed with the accuracy/estimates that Warren's provided - everything was spot on. This is a relief, since I asked him to take a look at my car once after visiting Jiffy Lube for an oil change, and my dad let me know that they basically charged me $60 to do nothing - including changing the oil. Warren's does what they say they are going to do, when they're going to do it. All the guys at the shop are really friendly and I've never had any repair take longer than two days - even the really complicated ones. This is an outstanding place to take your car for service. I have a 2007 Saab which can often be complicated or expensive to fix. Neither is the case at Warren's. They are very friendly and knowledgeable and their prices are very reasonable. My car needed a part from Sweden and they had it in less than a week. Also, you can drop off or pick up your car anytime from 6 a.m. to 11 p.m. - that is a huge selling point for me. I'll never take my cars anywhere else for service. read more

These guys are great. I took my Jeep in today without an appointment. I wanted to see if they could rotate my tires and do an oil change. They got me right in for the service with no hassles at all. Warren even had one of the guys drive me home (since it was 10 degrees outside). when it was done, they offered to pick me up, and had everything done in less than a couple of hours. Update 3/11/15. Let me start by saying there are few things I hate more than being wrong. This is one time when I am more than thrilled to be publicly very very wrong. I reviewed Warren late last year and had some issues (see below). Within days of my initial review, I had a personal message, call and voicemail from Warren himself asking to make things right. He made the generous offer for me to bring my car back in and for him to personally handle it and reevaluate it. I accepted, but unfortunately the day I planned to come in was the first of the mass blizzards and I got snowed in. I actually didn't even bother to call to say I'd no longer be bringing my car in from the weather issues, assuming that it was just a courtesy offer anyways and if I made it up in the future, I'd roll the die on if he remembered his offer. A couple months later, I found myself in the area again and decided to roll the die on going in. Upon rolling up, a man with a shirt that said "Warren" on the nametag looked at me and my car and introduced himself as yes, indeed, Warren, and thanked me for giving them another try. I actually did not meet Warren at my other prior visits, so as the owner of his institution, he clearly takes a very vested interest in knowing what is going on. We discussed some steering and/or alignment issues I had, and he told me he'd troubleshoot it -- I was actually happy to pay for any further alignment that was necessary, given that it had now been 6 months since my initial service from him and it[d be perfectly reasonly to conclude if the tires ere misaligned it was from my own fault.potholes over the course of the past 6 months. Warren waved this off, telling me he'd take a look right now and call me when he knew. Looking at their lot, I saw at least 5 or 6 other cars waiting outside the garage and assumed it'd be a while, so I wandered down the street to run some errands. In the time it took me to walk the 1 block to Whole Foods and shop a couple aisles, Warren had already called me that my car was ready - they had re-rotated the tires, diagnosed problems that needed a little more time-consuming repair (and I was in a time crunch to get my car -- my fault, not theirs) --), greased my steering wheel, re-topped off my fluid (and left me the generous extra left for next winter), and also noted that my motor oil was due for a change. He offered to change my motor oil now on the house and set a time in the future for the more complicated re-alignment I needed...also on the house! I ventured to come in at a future time again earlier in the day to get a same-day pickup and came back to pick up my car and he gave his card to come back at my convenience for the alignment and motor oil change. He told me that if I thought this visit was better than prior, then future ones would certainly only continue to be better. I completely believe him and guarantee there will be many many more future visits from myself and anyone I can possibly recommend him to. 5 Stars and more for this visit and, for how much he went above and beyond, 5 stars for my prior visits as well. read more

Warren's is great! Fast, friendly, and honest. Here are some examples I've experienced over the last couple years: * Had a tire puncture with tire slowly leaking down. I brought it to Warren's right after I discovered it, and they were able to get it in immediately and had the tire repaired in, idk, less than 20 minutes (while I waited). I don't remember the price, but totally reasonable. * Full brake job on worn out brakes and pads. Reasonably priced, done quickly, convenient drop-off and pick-up. * Oil changes. * Just now I swung by to get some help retrieving a screwdriver I had accidentally dropped down into the engine bay and couldn't reach. They used a long magnet to fish it out, no need to put it up on the lift, and no charge! I've also appreciated their willingness to talk about cars and mechanical issues, give me tips and advice for various things, and take time to explain things to me. They seem honest, which is really the number one criteria for a mechanic, right? Minor quibble: the gas prices at the station are higher than elsewhere. But I love the mechanic service! read more

I went here to get my tire fixed today and was blown away. When I walked in the door they were swamped and the cashier told me it would be a 2 hours wait. I explained to Warren (the owner) that I had to pick someone up from the airport in an hour and he said "no problem, let's do this". He personally looked at the tire and got it fixed in 15 minutes, for only $25!! All objective reasoning aside, Warren is a GREAT guy. While I was waiting, I watched him interact with a homeless man who clearly visited him regularly. They joked about the man's gf, and remembered the time they had dinner together at the soup kitchen down the street. Then I watched Warren hand him a $10 bill that a woman had just given him for gas minutes earlier. This guy clearly cares about people, and knows how to treat them well. If that's not enough reason to support him, it carries over into his service. read more

I called ahead over the weekend and was told to simply drop it off by 8am on Monday. I got there early, and a 1/2 hour later, they still weren't sure if they could even look at it! And Mgr now wants to meet me. Walked out. Guy at the desk chased me to get the yellow copy of an order that wasn't followed through on. Not sure why... So I insisted he delete my contact info and waited there until I watched him do it. Aggressive & shifty. I was able to get the same repair done in 20 min without calling ahead or dropping my car off first thing Mon morning at the nearby Jiffy Lube on Dempster. My car refused to start yesterday at the Jewel on Chicago Ave., across the street from Warren's Shell Service. Clearly, I was at Warren's mercy. I could tell from the way that Warren conducts himself and runs his business that I had nothing to worry about. He walked the car across the street, diagnosed the problem immediately, and communicated with me at every step of the way. His estimate was within $5.00 of my brother's. My oil light came on while visiting Evanston today, and I decided to stop here b/c of the excellent reviews. Two guys came right out to help me, and were persistent in getting my hood open - it was stuck. :/ After noticing I had two kids in the car, the guy, who turned out to be Warren, made it quick yet thorough, and he fixed my problem enough to get me back to the dealership. These days I'm not used to getting this level of service, but now I see what all the other Yelpers see in this place. The only downside is I think they may be on the pricey side if you need more extensive service. But I guess you get what you pay for. read more

I love these guys. I picked them because of their proximity to the Main Street stop on both the Metra and CTA, so I can just drop my car off and then take the train to work. They always give me the straight story. Fix this now. This can wait. You should do this before winter. They are WAY less than the dealer (big surprise). Today I brought my car in for a tune up and they said, "You're thousands of miles away from needing a full tune up, but you did need a new air filter." What mechanic does this? I bring it in every 5K for an oil change and I always feel safe after they've looked my car over. And it's right next to Trader Joes, which is a random added perk. read more

One of the most honest repair shops I've experienced. I've met Warren while at college about 12 years ago and he always fixed my car without overselling additional unnecessary service. He realized I was a college student and just needed the bare minimum work to get by. Today I live in Naperville and still take my car to him for any work besides oil changes. Recently my bimmer had a stuttering problem to which BMW quoted me $2000 for the repair. I showed Warren the quote, he diagnosed the vehicle and repaired it for $300. He could have easily taken me for much more, but that's not how he operates. He strives for honest work in order to build long term customer relationships and referrals. This guy's one in a million. Don't let his gas prices sway you. They're a bit above average, but his hourly rates are reasonable and far better than dealer. By the way, he primarily uses dealer parts for any repairs. read more

Willie, Jake and David were all very helpful. Great customer service. Other service shops make you feel like a clown school dropout the way they explain things to customers, but not Warren's guys. They don't give you any of the swirl-speak. They're very direct and clear. I've had them repair everything from faulty iginition wires to struts, shocks and leaf springs. They even installed underglow on my Civic using top quality products by King P. When my ET valve needed to be sealed I was afraid it would cost an arm and a leg. I literally asked Warren, "Can't you do anything without actually doing anything?" And he did! Super helpful, compassionate staff. read more

Since I live and work in Evanston, I've known of Warren and his shop for several years. It was only recently I required any repair service on my vehicle. Both he and his staff are incredibly knowledgeable and friendly. Furthermore, his rates are quite reasonable. I've never felt like I was being gouged. I first met Warren when I got into a jam and needed some work on a Saturday afternoon - is there another shop within 10 miles that's even open at that time? He went out of his way to help and got me going. Since then I have thrown problems at him ranging from Audi to Volvo (can't think of any "Z" cars except Nissan's!), and he has been able to fix them all. His repair prices are quite reasonable and the quality is always great.
