Downright criminal. They quoted me $1000 for a a door handle I've replaced five times already (known flaw), I just wanted them to do it while they were in there. When I said no, they ripped it apart and it took me twice as long to fix. Then they quoted me FOUR THOUSAND DOLLARS to do some wiring.... 15 min in a parking lot worth of work. They did an inspection and quote in a few hours and were thorough and totally professional. Updated review due to team making this right for us following the issue. I appreciate businesses that care about their customer's feedback. --- HEART came recommended by a friend, and had great Google reviews. I also really trusted Armando over the phone, as he made me feel more secure than any other local shop. Took my car in for a check engine light that came on the day prior, but then changed back to normal. I have an older car (2012), so figured I'd still get it checked to assess if any repairs were CRITICAL. They ran the report and said it was emissions related, and that it wasn't necessarily urgent to get fixed but that I wouldn't pass an emissions test if I had one coming up. Luckily, I had just had an emissions test a couple months ago, so wanted to pick up my car to use in the meantime while I considered the $900 it would cost to fix it. We came back the next day and unfortunately the car was dead, and wouldn't start. They had to jump it but assured everything was okay to drive. We left with the car and went to another location for a bit, after we went to leave, the car wouldn't start again and it started making weird noises. This leads me to believe that HEART may have messed something up in the inspection, considering that the inspection itself indicated the issue was emissions related and no big deal. Came in for brake pad/rotor replacement. Brake fluid flush was highly encouraged; got it done for additional $120. A couple of weeks later, the brake pad wasn't feeling right; the brake would engage and different points when pushing down on the brake pedal. Brought it back to these guys and initially told me nothing was wrong but after a second conversation they realized it was the brake master cylinder. Told them it seems highly unusual that the master cylinder would go bad a couple of weeks after the brake job. The guy told me it's known to happen, perhaps a coincidence he said...really? Anyway, the job would've been $900. Decided to take it to a few other mechanics...all told me the same thing. First they asked if Heart flushed the brakes? Then they said that they don't want to point fingers but the master cylinder can wear down if in the brake flush, they pump the brakes while it's dry (meaning, the fluid is fully drained and the mechanic pumps the brakes in that state). Thanks for damaging my car and wasting my time for further repairs. Getting it repaired at a local mechanic for half the price. Needless to say, won't be returning here for any other work on my cars. read more

We were regular customers of this mechanic. We would take our Volkswagen there for oil changes and lights that would turn on in the dashboard. However, for the past few months, we would go for a sound our engine was making. It felt like clock work - about every three months we would go, they would provide a temporary fix, and overcharge us for what they did. Finally, the engine light came on for a third time and we decided to take it to the dealership. There, we found out that the wrong filter was being used and the oil was not the correct one for the car, possibly recycled, which was causing it to burn faster and cause engine problems. We are truly disappointed with them and will not be returning. If they couldn't fix it, then don't and don't damage the car too! Would not recommend. read more

BE AWARE OF SCAM This is not my usual auto shop. I received a coupon for oil change in mail and the shop I usually go to is near my workplace, due to WFH, I decided to try HEART out. I dropped off my car at the appointment time in a Friday afternoon and went to a nearby cafe to wait. Shortly after, I received a call from the shop claiming that all my break pads are worn down, if I don't change them RIGHT NOW, the calipers are in danger and it would be a much bigger bill down the road. They quoted me $1,200+ for changing the break pads and rotors, as well as a couple of jobs they didn't care to explain clearly (e.g., changing some fluid), then they "kindly" agreed to apply a $100 coupon for this job. At the end of this call, they also tried to rush me to a decision by saying if I decide now, they will be able to finish everything just before the shop closes. Since I never heard/noticed anything abnormal with my breaks and I didn't have much information about the cost of such job by industry standard, I felt very suspicious and told them not to do anything but complete the oil change. I paid the coupon price and left. A few days later, I went to my usual repair shop because I want to be sure my car is still safe to drive. The mechanic said my pads still have 8,000 - 13,000 miles to go and quoted me $650 for pads, rotors, and labor when I need them changed. Note that he didn't even quote me the cheapest parts on the market, he said those would be cheaper but will wear off quickly. If you think one other shop cannot represent the market, do a simple google search (of how much to change brake pads and rotors), you will find such job usually costs $500 averagely (without changing calipers). I now question the integrity of this shop severely. Aside from the coupon, I went in because of the nice reviews on Google. I optimistically hope that my experience is an one-off incident, but I feel it is so important to share so others can avoid any future scam for themselves. read more

I had a funny experience taking a used car I purchased recently to Heart. At first, I noticed how clean and fancy their shop is. Rewards on the walls. BBB, no complaints. Red and white colors like the Japanese flag, or the in and out burger chain. They have compassionate words on their walls. I have to say how funny it is that they use the Heart title, because there is a dark side to love, and that is heartbreak! So you take your car in and they tell you the repairs you need, and you feel heartbroken. Love can hurt.... And let's compare this place to an oil changing business like valvoline, or any oil changing and repair business. Check out the other reviews and you see that some people felt scammed at this location. Mechanics at valvoline, told me false info about another car I own. They were trying to make money by telling me false info about my car. Heart could have the same problem. One corrupt mechanic or manager, and they are making up problems and hurting the reputation of heart. I'm not posting this five star, doubting that some people could have been scammed at heart. For their decorations, friendly customer service, and because I don't believe I was scammed, I'm giving them five stars. They did price average competitive pricing. I prefer low prices. At heart, they were very fast to fix my car, when other mechanics would have taken days. So, if you felt scammed at heart, post your true story, I wouldn't doubt you unless you came off like a whiney, bratty rich adult child, who wanted to bash heart to make your self feel better. I felt a little triggered with all the compassionate messages. It's like getting salt thrown at you, and preached to about love. For a business that uses a word that is almost sacred, they should go extra miles to not let corrupt mechanics or managers manipulate customers. It's like a church with a pervert or two in their ministry, or a police department covering up bad cops. You guys have a lot of guts to use the title heart. I couldn't fault them for finding a screw in my tire and pricing me thirty extra dollars to do a permanent patch. I don't have enough evidence to give them a lower rating, or to claim that a mechanic could have tried to scam me for a false story about a screw in my tire... It is a family owned business. They seem passionate, inspired, and in good faith. I can't really lower the rating because of other reviews. If I suspected something enough, I would have let everyone know. read more

I went for an oil change, the Euro Synthetic Oil Change. So the day before I got an appointment for 4:30 pm and the advertised mailer price as well as website price is $85. Okay so i go Heart Auto, because they are cheaper than the dealer who quoted $125 for an oil change, Jennings. Heart Auto's mechanic finished the oil change, took about 40 minutes, acceptable, no worries as yet. But they charged 98 dollars which included tax and 6.93 dollars for supplies, I was told for a rag and stuff. So the cost of a rag is not incidental, the Moak family is indeed very profit minded, all those slogans and values on the walls do not mean much after all. Back to narrating the experience, then someone called I think Sam beckons me over to the counter, he said the mechanic has given a report, now begins the baiting and sheer attempt to rip off, Sam says one of your tires had low air about 26 pounds per square inch, looks like you may have an air leak, we can check for 34.90. I told him no. He then skips two other pushes, one for a cowl and another for oil flush, and something else for 270 dollars. I was already wary of these guys, 34.90 to check for an air check, I could a new tire for about a hundred bucks or less, but my car has only 18000 miles, Anyways, I left with the impression that Heart Auto service writers actually have no heart. This impression was confirmed when I got into my car, and noticed the next oil change mileage and date sticker on the top left of the windshield. The next oil would be in 6 months or 6000 miles. Well, Jennings charges 125 dollars for an oil change and they are 12 months and 10,000 miles whichever comes first. Moral of the story: Heart Auto uses inferior oil and therefore cannot stand behind its service and oil used. I think paying 20 percent more to get 75 percent more miles would be a no-brainer in the future, plus Heart Auto staff is not trustworthy, they will check for an air leak for 35 dollars after they already aired the tire, the mechanic and the service writer both were being just plain opportunistic and dishonest. Zero stars if there would have been such an option. read more

We received a coupon in the mail. Oil change $24.95. My wife took her car in for service An inspection comes as a plus. My wife called me saying there's a problem. Left front wheel bearing. They provide a printout of the inspection. They scanned the computer. They found a dirty throttle body error. They also said we needed a new battery. My wife told me that they would do the repairs for $900.00. When she came home and showed me the report. I got on my computer finding prices. I called the shop to discuss the estimate. I was informed that $900.00 was for the bearing only. I found my part for much less. Repaired, it was less than a third. Last night the car didn't start. Not the battery at all, loose cables. 2 seconds done. My gauge is reading good charge. Not the battery. We are both disabled seniors. Because I am old doesn't mean I am a push over. I went to school for automotive. I have also worked on cars since age 14. If you value your money pass. Unless you want to be pampered which comes at a price. They are not worth my money. read more

I brought my Jeep in for tire warranty work. They repaired the leak, but over tightened the lug nuts. I'm 230 pounds, and I had to stand on the breaker bar when I needed to remove the wheel to install my winter tires. There's no way it was tightened to 100 foot pounds, as even my electric impact tool was no match for the gorilla units they used. I would have been in a heap of trouble if I had to change a flat using the factory jack tools. read more

Brought car here multiple times previously for simple oil changes, putting on a wiper, etc. Each time, they always had a new list of problems w/ my car that magically were not problems the next time I brought it in. Knew better but brought car in due to a check engine light for a diagnostic. Of course, wanted $750 to fix the issue. Part of this included a belt replacement for $350 which is comically high ($175/hr labor and a 1.5 to fix a belt?). Received 2 other quotes including from a dealer and got the car fixed for hundreds of dollars less. Always know they are at issue when they start claiming where I went is using inferior parts, mechanics aren't as good, etc. Not sure what is going on here but based off my experiences, they charge much higher rates for everything and just hope because they are in Evanston and many people have $, that they won't care. read more

We have two Subarus, one new and one about 10 years old. I took the newest one in for an oil change to get a vibe for the place and how they treat customers. Had a great experience and took the older one in too. I knew there was some potential things that their inspection would find, but they did not find an excess of things that "needed" done like so many other shops have done to me in the past. Driving by all the time, I saw the Heart logo and the rainbow flag and finally decided to stop in for an oil change. The decision was based simply on thinking "well, these people seem nice". And I was right! From the comfortable waiting room, the amazing Kieesha at the counter, to the full dossier I got on my car, Heart was amazing! I'm used to places telling you the spots on your car that might need fixed, but Heart sent me a document with pictures, ordered from most important to least, with no pressure to get anything done right then and there. I dated other shops too, but visited Heart Evanston several times for misc repairs over the past 3 years & previously at Duxler in the burbs. On my last visit I was given a $2,500+ estimate to repair an oil leak. Online estimating apps listed shops and provided a range of $800 to $1,300 for the same repair. Visited another highly rated shop in the neighborhood that offered the same diagnostic and had the repair done for less than $900. If you read the reviews Heart has its fans, but personally I'm too skeptical to return. read more

I'll preface this with I never review, good or bad. A business really has to operate with a total lack of integrity to get me to write something. Check my profile, this is my first review of any kind. I'll start with the fact that I only ended up trying Heart because they seemed to market themselves as such a stand up business. I dropped my car off for regular maintenance and to have my tire pressure system checked for an error message. I was told the car would get a full inspection in addition to addressing those issues. They called later to report that I needed repairs in excess of $2000 on issues I had not even asked them to check. The dollar amount was large but I didn't look at it as a huge deal because this seemed like an expected practice from all mechanics to upsell beyond your reason for visiting. I needed to pickup my car in between and then bring it back the next day to have the rest of the repairs completed. Upon picking up my car the exhaust had gone from quiet and seemingly no urgent issues when I dropped it off to loud and borderline undrivable at pickup. I contacted them to report that my exhaust at least sounded fine when I brought it to them and that I received no update at any time that anything unexpected had occurred to my exhaust system. I didn't go as far as to accuse them of unlawful, dishonest practices. I did point out though that to be told that my car needed $2000+ in repairs after bringing it in for regular maintenance, casted the kind of doubts that people can't afford to have about an auto repair shop. On top of that, to have one of the potential repairs be unexpectedly to my exhaust system that sounded fine when I brought the vehicle to them and then picking up my car and it being so loud that it was almost undrivable, was completely unacceptable. I was told that these were unfortunate coincidences and that I could get a couple of complimentary oil changes for the trouble. I paid for the repairs (tire pressure system was not repaired) and told them that they'd lost a customer before they'd even earned my business. It is businesses like this that continue to cast a dark cloud over an industry that continually struggles with the perception that all of these repair shops are dishonest and borderline unlawful. Normally, I would not bother to write a review on Yelp if I was dissatisfied with a business. Instead, I would stop patronizing the business. In this instance, I cannot let this one go. I have dealt with this company for the last 30 years. Events in the last couple of years have raised my ire. I am fleet manager for a medium sized construction company. I am fairly well versed in the operation of cars to medium size trucks. When we purchased a set of four tires for our personal vehicle, flat repair and wheel rotation were him part of the deal. After my wife brought our car for a flat repair, were charged. When I called and asked for a credit against my credit card, I was told that they couldn't issue a credit but we could apply it toward a future purchase ... really? I brought a service van to have two tire pressure monitoring valves replaced and we were charged over &450.00 for both. A year earlier it was $110.00 per wheel. When I asked the counter person why it was so expensive he just shrugged. The following day I confirmed with another vendor and I was quoted $211.00 for both wheels. In addition, I had made an appointment because I wanted to wait for the repair and when I arrived, I was told that they were running two hours behind. How about a courtesy call to inform me of that? I was quoted $720.00 to replace a worn wheel bearing assembly. I chose to replace the bearing myself. The bearing cost $70.00 and it took me less that one hour in labor. The math makes no sense - even if they charged $150.00 per hour for labor, plus the cost of the part. F.U.D. - This was and maybe still is a sales strategy from IBM. Fear, Uncertainty, and Doubt. This technique was used in a sales pitch to dissuade a prospective customer away from a competitors solution. The counter people at Heart Auto have mastered this technique when applied to auto repair. I pity those people who have fallen for this and have spent their hard earned money for unneeded repairs. I was referred to this shop back in 2017 when it was Duxler and I had a great experience. They fixed my car well and they weren't overly pushy with having me pay for unnecessary work on my car. It seemed like a no brainer to take my car there again when I was having some break trouble. Thankfully I never get car fixed without running it past my father who was a certified mechanic for over 25 years. Turns out they were not only wanting me to pay almost double ($549 at heart vs $375 at another reputable shop) for the work but when I told them I was going to wait for the repairs they told me a completely improbable scenario to scare me into getting the repairs. When I repeated the scenario to my dad he said that it was "complete bullshit." He told me that what the guy on the phone told me was completely impossible. In all the times I've taken my cars to a repair shop, my dad has never "banned" me from going back to a shop but now I cannot and will not ever take my care back to Heart. When Duxler changed to Heart the quality and trustworthiness changed too. read more

I don't trust them. I went there and made major repair with them twice. Both are bad bad experiences. The first time I went there with my old 1995 Camry. The engine oil was leaking and they charged me over $300 to fix it. HOWEVER, the problem still exists and when I went back to them, they asked for more money with a whole different problem explanation and came along with a "recommendation" to change the alternator, which I didn't ask them to check. Then I declined. Not long ago, the car was broken down on the road. Two month ago when I went there again with my Jeep liberty. The battery seems dead and the engine check light was on. They fixed the battery and changed the alternator. And they called me for a computer check with the car electronics and charged me $75 for it, which later I know can be done in autozone in FREE. After the checking, they quoted me over $700 fixing it with no solid explanation just very generally saying the wiring may have some problem. I lost my trust to them at that time and of course declined. Recently, I went to another mechanics and they told me very specifically what causes the engine check light and charge me about $140. I completely agree with the review from Casia and I will never return to them. Don't bother going there. read more

Going back to this place makes me want to shudder! When my fiance suggested it the other day I yelled, "No way. Not ever again!" First off, I must explain that I am the daughter of a master mechanic who has skillfully taken care of my cars for my entire life. Unfortunately dad lives in the northern part of Michigan and I have relocated to Evanston! Though I have inquired a good deal of knowledge from him as well as advice about my cars whenever something is going wrong. I have given Duxler my fair share of tries with two different cars over the past year and a half. I have gone in for oil changes (3) and also with my old 1992 rust bucket when crucial parts of the axle were falling off. Each time has turned into a stressful ordeal because they will try their best to up sell work and parts that you don't need (at inflated prices). I have always left thinking my car will fall to pieces if I don't pay another few hundred dollars to get it fixed. Fortunately my dad can talk me through the ordeal and I've gotten out with just an oil change every time. This brings me to my breaking point with Duxler. I finally take in my new (new to me) 2003 car that I just purchased 3 months prior through my father for an oil change. I'm told I need new brakes (not!), my battery is almost dead (still working fine months later!), and that my air filter is filthy. I politely declined taking action and requested they just finish with the oil change. WELL...being paranoid as usual I make sure to pop the hood and make sure things seem to be in order. My oil cap isn't screwed on, the terminal cover from my battery is missing, and the windshield wiper cap is gone. Also, considering the oil on my dipstick is more black than anything else, I'm curious if they even changed the oil. The oil changes are cheap and fast for a reason. This place is NOT worth your time, money, or the stress it can impose! read more

I have been very satisfied with this place to get tires for several years. Their service was fast and reliable for tire repair and replacement. However, I went in a few weeks ago for a tire repair (resealed the rim) and they recommended "important" work to the wheel axels at $395 each side, indicating that it would be unsafe to continue driving it the way it is. I immediately took it to the Volvo repair shop I trust in Hubbard Woods and they told me that there was a "little play" but not enough to take action right now. It leaves me incredibly disappointed and of course unable to trust that these folks are doing a good job on my tires because either they 1) don't really know what they're doing, or 2) are dishonest and greedy. Either way, I can't continue to do business there. Just to end on a positive note, I will say that everyone I dealt with was pleasant and customer service oriented. read more

I can only speak to the tire repair portion of their service, but, I was very happy with our experience at Duxler. I drove over a nail and figured we'd have a flat tire within the hour. Took the car to Duxler and they were great. They checked all of our tires, and said the one with the nail could be easily fixed, and that we didn't need a new tire. $15 and 10 minutes later we were on our way, and a month later the tire is still fine. It's refreshing not to feel like you've just been mugged after auto repair! read more

So often when I read a review about auto service and I am always skeptical of the reviews. Individuals often have a serious dependence on their vehicle, yet they often neglect simple maintenance until the problem gets bigger. So when the time comes that the major repair needs to be done they are upset at the price or the diagnosis. Come on folks, cars are very complicated machines that you drive into the ground on a daily basis. You cant expect that you are going to get an accurate diagnosis from one visit to a non dealer service shop. Its just not going to happen. So I have some rules for anyone looking at reviews for other shops in this area. If you need a major repair done to your vehicle, take it to the dealers to get the problem diagnosed correctly and get the high end price for the repair. Decide if your going to let them do it or if you will take it somewhere else. But if you let a non dealer mechanic make sure you take it to a general service shop that specializes in your vehicles make. This way find out what the problem is and find a mechanic that can do the job. As for Duxler they are a general repair shop. Take your vehicle there when you need stuff like belt changes tune ups and other moderate maintenance. Otherwise you are going to be upset. Don't buy tires there. Go to a tire shop that specializes in tires. It will be cheaper. Duxler charges you for balancing and mounting. $80 tires end up costing you $450 with tax Change your own oil. Replace your own battery and windshield wipers. Why pay them for something that takes you 30 minutes or less. Because I follow these rules for auto repairs my experiences with Duxler has exactly been what I expected. And to everyones disbelief I have paid less going here than some of their competition in Evanston. read more

Shame on Heart. My elderly mom brought her older car in with the check engine light on. They recommended $2000 worth of repairs, including the AC (it is March). They said she needed a new hydraulic belt tensioner to the tune of $800 or she'd be at risk of losing control of steering. My husband, who knows cars, found this part online for $40 and said it would take 20 minutes to install. We went ahead with repairing the allegedly cracked vacuum hose but nothing else. My husband just looked at the car. He says the belt tensioner is fine as is. The AC also seems fine. Bet the hose was fine too. Turns out Mom has trouble tightening the gas cap because of her arthritis, which might have been the only "problem." Shame on Heart for trying to take advantage of a retiree on a fixed income. My "Heart" is broken. I've been going to Duxler (Heart) for years -- even recommended them to my friends. But every time I go for a simple thing like an oil change, they always recommend other expensive services. I finally got suspicious and took my car to two other places to see if my car really needed the work. Both said no. It also happened to my daughter. I could weep thinking about the thousands I've spent at that place when al the while they were just gouging me. If you like to pay for unnecessary and expensive repairs, this place is for you. So you know when you're planning a cross-country move and you've only got about 2 weeks to rid yourself of all your extra crap around the house and you're driving all over the land trying to get last minute visits in and you get a flat tire? Well luckily these guys were super helpful in a pinch. I spoke with the owner, Brian, and he confirmed that they would be able to help me ASAP. Everything after that was just a breeze. I just got the one tire replaced and I didn't feel pressure to upgrade this or buff that or re-attach this, which was nice. They cut through the BS and got the job done! Great service too.
