Ah, Warren's. Where the singles are like doubles and the doubles might well be a whole fifth. Warren's is a real class act. Not euro-hotel-bar classy, but quiet, confident, unpretentious classy. It's a safe bet for any mix of crowds, though the sports bar type will probably leave unfulfilled. Prices are quite reasonable ($6-8 on a Grey Goose martini, I believe...you know how details get fuzzy). It's a little bit big band, a little bit 80's, and very much Houston. read more

To me, Warren's is a man's bar. And by that I mean, it's very straightforward. It doesn't try to charm with elegant décor or trendy new cocktails. There aren't any too-cool-for-school, obnoxious bartenders. It's just a low-lit, outdated bar with apathetic bartenders that serves strong drinks. Take it or leave it. Lots of guys seem to take it because every time I've been to Warren's, there have been a lot of dudes. In fact, a guy introduced it to me. I've since said "bye" to that guy, but I've continued to visit Warren's. It was also the first place that I ever had a Manhattan. I shuddered after every sip (so strong), but now it's one of my favorite drinks. If you want to get your money's worth out of your drinks, in a laid back environment, and maybe impress a new guy by making him think this is the kind of place you like (and it is!), then Warren's is a good choice. Need a quick yummy lunch downtown Houston? Stumble on into Warren's! If you come here for lunch during the week, you will not be disappointed. For $4.50 you can get a homemade hot ham & cheese sandwich, mounded with wavy potato chips and 2 pickle spears. Ice water in a high ball glass, and the friendliest bartender/waitress/bar staff you could ask for. Highly recommend for easy quick lunch. I feel like I'm missing something when I read the other reviews, but I don't get it!! It was really tiny and they had no selections. Now onto the service and I'm going to give them the benefit of the doubt only because the Houston Beer Fest was that weekend and I know they were more crowded than normal (which really wasn't crowded at all compared to everywhere else, half the bar was empty...) but given all that is no reason to be outright UGLY to your customers. The lady was obviously flustered because of how crazy it was, I had asked for a rag to clean something sticky from a table that hadn't been cleaned and she flipped out saying "I'm a little busy right now, I can't really do that." I offered to clean it myself because I knew that she was busy, but she just huffed and puffed and did it grudgingly THEN progressed to complain to other people in the bar about how it was too busy and people keep asking her stuff. Stumbled upon Warrens with my wife when hanging out in downtown. One thing that's incredibly difficult is finding a cocktail bar that isn't overpriced and makes excellent (not full of sugar) cocktails. Warrens is old, it's questionable on the outside, and upon initial meeting, the staff appear a little grim... If you go in asking for a whiskey coke and a wine, you'll get just that. Here's where this places excels though... "Do you do cocktails?" "Yup" "Do you have a menu?" "No..." ... "what do you like?" "Umm, I like something dry and strong, with a hint of citrus" "Do you like olives?" "Nope" "Ok, try this..." ...whisks up drink... "Amazing, exactly what I wanted!!, keep them coming!" This is the bar you should hit if you're sick of sweet sugary overpriced cocktails. The staff at first glance aren't as in your face friendly as most places, but give them and the locals some chat and you will soon find yourself in a friendly fun cocktail happy low priced bar that will have you staggering and smiling right out the door. The best downtown bar, period. It's even better now that the Market Square construction finally finished. Great bartenders (with HEAVY hands), good jukebox, and a friendly group of regulars. Warren's has been a staple of this part of Downtown for a while now. Let me keep this short and simple. This place pours heavy and is relatively cheap. The quality is not really meant to be high. Don't come in here with a snooty mentality, because YOU WILL BE DISAPPOINTED. While keeping a campy outdated atmosphere on the interior (I actually like its charm), the service inside isn't bad, and you will find a comfortable casual vibe. This is the definition of a downtown dive. Don't go here expecting an expertly crafted fancy cocktail or bottle service. Order your classic cocktails and expect it STRONG. This is probably the strongest pour in Houston. The jukebox has a good eclectic mix and isn't one of the fancy new internet connected ones. The crowd is a good mix of downtown professionals meeting for an afterwork cocktail to those pre-gaming before going somewhere else. One bonus of the place is that you may bring your own food as there isn't any served here. So in other words, order a mixed drink, don't order a beer here. read more

Whoa! Maybe too hard core for me, but the tiny adorable lady who took our order made my boo an absolutely murderous drink. If I was having an "It's a Wonderful Life" paralell universe of the place "where they make drinks to get men drunk" it would probably be okay, but I guess I am just a little too fragile for it (more props to people who can hang!!). Went to Warren's after our tour guide highly recommended the place and we were highly satisfied. Dont cone here if u are looking for fancy, this is a great low-key, kick back & relax bar. Very old school feel, lots of wood work, well-seasoned bartenders that really KNOW their drinks with a heavy pour. So I walk in and ask the bartender for a drink menu and her reply was "We don't have drink menus, we just make good drinks!" Well ok then. Since I prefer my beer, there wasn't much to choose from their only 4 drafts beers and the other standard bottled. If you order a Lone Star, don't to ask for your cap : ) Laid back, older crowd that call the bartenders by name, nice lighting and good jukebox selection. When I was younger this spot was my launching pad for an evening downtown. My first time walking in here I felt like I walked though a portal of what a bar may have looked like in the 80s. A dive bar feel with makes you think you did in fact steal....but its just really cheap. Warren's Inn pours generously. Expect a fun evening when you start out here. This spot has a number of memories for me....some blurry some sharp as a knife. Some revolve around a shot I used to do called "The Stuntman" which I had to retire due to my own health and well being. (If there were a reason why I am no longer a fan of Tequila this would be one of them. I am 5 years Stuntman free....and counting) As night falls and bartenders do last call you will no doubt find yourself apologizing for your initial reaction to the way things look. When I worked downtown, this was our late-late night bar of choice. It's always open -- holidays, Hurricane Rita coming to town, you name it -- and the drinks are reasonable and done right. Nothing frou-frou about this place or its staff. Crowd is always funny. You'll get young greasers and old drunks and the notorious "head kisser" in a fedora and white suit on any given night, along with couples and groups just in for a drink and a good time. Can not believe the service we received. Our bartender ELIZABETH was extremely rude from the very beginning. I sat down and the first thing she commented on was my physical appearance. How about HELLO? Then told me I couldn't stay in my seat long because it was the service area.. (She told me all of this within 10 seconds). As 5 minutes went on, me and my friends ordered shots and she IMMEDIATELY asked us how we were going to pay for them. As she politely asked everyone else if they wanted to keep a tab open. I then asked her what her name was, this lady says "what's YOUR name?" It all went downhill after that. All in all, if you're African American DONT come here. I left the bartender $2 - she got everyone's attention around me, asked me if I seriously just left $2, and continued to school me on the common curtesy of leaving at least 20%.........on a bar tab consisting of 4 shots. I've been wanting to check this place out after hearing mixed reviews, but I wasn't glad when I actually did. I went in on a Friday night and the bar was definitely packed with people that were obviously enjoying themselves. It just didn't turn out to be a good night for me. I sat at the bar for several minutes while a bartender literally stood in front of me...not doing anything.....and just walked away to talk to another bartender. To say I was confused is an understatement. The guy clearly looked in our direction several times but never even approached us. I can't speak to the heavy pour that everyone talks about (I hear it's pretty bad), but that one experience was enough. There are too many better looking and friendlier bars in downtown to not stay at this one. read more

I guess Warrens has somewhat of a coolness factor and reputation in the downtown micro sceen but this place is way off in terms of general customer service. I'm truly sad to write this review today, I have been a Warrens customer for about 4 years now, and have had decent service but , today I didn't have much luck. The bartender was lousy. I asked her opinion on a flavored drink and she was rude , rolled her eyes, walked away and then about 3 minutes later came back and started on our drinks. Then as she started to work on them, she walked away in the middle of preparing them to collect cash from another customer.... when it was time to check out I refused to pay a tip because as I asked for my check she decided to take shots with a familiar group. I read reviews on this place and it seems they are talking about a totally different place. Went there last night, a group of 7. Man at a door was great. Very polite. Place is nice. Bar is cool. Prices are reasonable. However, the girl bartender could not be angrier. She was rude even before we said a single word. And watching her, it was not only to us. I complained about treatment with an older lady and, visibly and verbally uncomfortable with our complaint, the excuse was that it had been a very stressful night, lots of work, etc. (The man bartender was apologetic and nice). Hey, work is work and comes with perks and not-so-perks. If I mistreat a client and justify my actions with that in my office, I would be fired at once. Not a good experience specifically when you are looking for a table and are treated rudely by the staff for bringing in empty to almost empty water bottles because we wanting to dispose of the bottles and not throw them in the street so asked for a trash receptacle before ordering drinks and were "reprimanded" by the staff in a very unprofessional way. Warrens is in a great location downtown in Market Center square, caddycorner from two of my favorite places- Hearsay and La Carafe. Yet it lacks all the charm and sophistication that those two places offer. My friends love coming to Warrens. They've been coming for the cheap drinks for about a year now, and have gotten to know the bartenders. I've been three times, have had one drink (they don't carry the liquors I like to drink) and try not to be seen coming in or out of this establishment. The outside looks very promising- a quaint looking older building, painted teal, across from the actual Market Square park. However, upon entering, I always regret my decision to come. Inside it's dark and dingy, the air feel heavy from old smoke, and the furniture, decor, and flooring all look like they were bought used from an old VFW that shut down. They do have TVs on the wall, but the most random made-for-TV movies are always playing, which becomes distracting as we try to figure out what we're watching. They do have a "nicer" area (I think they're going for nicer) with half of a wooden gazebo against a wall, covered in flashing multicolored Christmas lights. I'm not sure if that's where the cool kids sit, but I think it looks pretty tacky. And finally, we are always the youngest people in this bar by a good 20-30 years. It's a dive bar filled with 50-60-somethings, and not the kind you'd expect to see at Perry's or McCormick. These are the kind who are slightly crazy, wearing old, dirty Hawaiian shirts, and you can't help but wonder when the last time they got a good hot shower was. Horrible service. Rude bartenders that aren't willing to give any drink suggestions. The drinks we finally got were too strong and tasted gross..I didn't even finish mine. Also had another persons drinks charged to my card and they had to void it out. This on top of the horrible service equals an overall annoying experience. read more
