This place is so UNDERRATED! Such a peaceful atmosphere, consistent food, and chill staff; I can't believe that Washoe Public House isn't getting the hype it deserves! The eating area is very spacious and commodious. Though this place has a casual vibe, the presentation of the food is totally fine-dining material. Each dish, especially the Citrus glazed salmon, is served as a piece of art. I've been here around three times before I installed yelp, and am excited to finally leave a review. The short rib, was absolutely amazing. The short rib was so tender, and each brussels sprout was a literal flavor bomb. The brussels sprouts I've had at other places have flavor only on the exterior, whereas the brussels sprouts here play a different game. The short rib is served in a really big portion. Though it may look dark from the photos, there are actually three big pieces. I loved loved loved the sauce; there's a sweet tangy taste to it, though it reminded me a lot of BBQ sauce. This short rib was a win. Chefs kiss. The truffle lasagna was terrific; so much sauce in between the lasagna layers. I could absolutely make out the truffle flavor in this dish. However, I recommend eating this dish quickly, as the lasagna stiffens really quickly. Thirty minutes after it was served, I went it to take another bite, and it wasn't as good anymore. The ceasar salad +beef is a great choice for a light but filling meal when you're currently on a healthy diet. Each dish here comes in giant portions, but even after you finish this salad, it won't feel too heavy on your body. I think it's because Washoe is really light on the dressing levels; perfecting the amount so it doesn't overtake the fresh flavor of the greens or leave the salad bland and insipid. However, the beef was a bit too well done and on the firmer side. The first time coming here, I was totally shocked to find out that the food they served did not match the relaxed and informal vibe the setting sets up. Not a bad thing at all. We went to this restaurant over a year ago when it was still upscale dining. Now the ambiance is more of a hometown bar and grill with Wolf Pack (Go Pack!) banners all over. Nothing wrong with that but we were looking for an upscale restaurant experience like Bricks. (If you haven't tried Brinks, go, it's amazing. Our reservation was for 6p on Saturday, and we should have known something was up when we arrived and there were only a couple of people in the bar and restaurant, and no one was seated outside. The last time we were here, the place was packed and we had to wait for our reservation table. The second red flag was sitting on the uncomfortable folding chairs as the chairs they used to have were traditional high back wooden chairs. Gone also are table cloths, now you have a bare table. And the menus now are on a piece of paper. The wine selection is small, and they don't list wine bottle prices, but only per glass cost. I think again this is due to their change in what style restaurant they are now. So when I specifically ordered a bottle of wine, a glass came. The wine menu like the whole menu is small. We got two appetizers, the pork bell egg rolls and the potstickers. I have a rule of not ordering Chinese food at non-Chinese restaurants, but I ordered them anyway. The rolls appeared house made and were cooked perfectly tasty. The sauce really complimented them. The potstickers were store bought with some black sesame seeds sprinkled on top. They were eatable but nothing special. For dinner my wife got the bulgogi lettuce wraps. Very tasty and hot. If you like it hot, these are for you. I got the wild boar schnitzel, but this had problems. One it wasn't seasoned. Schnitzel needs to be seasoned prior to batter, and the flour mixture should be seasoned too. It So it was bland. It was cooked very well. The sause the placed on it however was bland and didn't add to the dish. Schnitzel should be able to stand on its own, and placing a gravy on top makes the schnitzel coating mushy. I'd consider placing that on the side and serving it with some mashed potatoes. The dish comes with no sides. So all of that was $170. The value on this meal was about $100. read more

Elk Chops, Kangaroo Philly Cheese Steak, Boar Schnitzel or Scottish Eggs, if you are looking for "different" you can have it at the Washoe Public House. Situated in Mid-Town, it is conveniently located near the River and an easy walk to to the Pioneer Center. Have no fear, there is quite normal food fare in addition to the more exotic. We went with a large group, so we were able to sample the exotic and the more traditional. Starting with the Double Elk Chops, featured on Dives, Diners and Drive-Ins, the Elk is a bit on the gamey side, tender with a hint of lamb taste but a finish of liver, it is not for everyone. Scottish Eggs is a soft boiled egg, wrapped in sausage, then deep fried. It is served with a beer mustard. My friend, from England, was quick to order the Scottish Eggs. He reported that they were a bit over cooked but otherwise fine. 6/10. The Kangaroo Philly Cheese Steak sounds more exotic than the taste. For this sandwich I would have appreciated a bit more Kangaroo :-) but otherwise was good. Our friends seemed to enjoy the Boar Schnitzel and the portion was certainly large, as were all the portions at the Washoe Public House. The Short Ribs were so tended and a just a touch on the sweet side. My wife liked the sweetness but as a full meal, it was a bit sweet for my palate. I had the Washoe Burger with Bacon. A solid burger. I would have preferred my patty a bit less cooked but it was fine none the less. Rich with flavor, a solid choice. The fries were good. Nothing spectacular. Well...where do I begin. We first came to Washoe public house about 8 years ago when they had the previous owner and all was well. My husband mentioned that we should go back since it's been years and I agreed. Big mistake. We walked in and was greeted by a pretty annoyed host and we decided to sit inside. So far so good. Same guy comes over and asks what we want and he still didn't seem like he even wanted to be there. He just kept being short with us and at this point I'm getting annoyed myself. I asked if the lobster roll was good and he said everything here is good and that he's been doing this for a long time yadda yadda and so I ask " are you the owner?" His reply "Nope!" And I'm like okay whatever. We get our food and the scotch egg was sooo salty. We couldn't even finish. The best dish was the bulgogi lettuce cups. My husband's short rib poutine was overly sweet and soupy. My lobster roll was so acidic and just not good. Let's just say I was not happy. So I had my husband look up who owns this place since we heard that there's new ownership and guess who the owner is!?.......... Our waiter/annoyed host! Also he made a comment how he's waiting on his 1 star review which is a bizzare thing to say to a customer but okay. So now I'm even more mad at this guy. We still played nice, thanked the staff and left. But we were stopped outside by another customer that was seated 2 tables behind us and they said they are going elsewhere to get more food and how they think that there's drama in the kitchen and how our waiter/owner seemed angry and slammed the menu down at the bar. I didn't want to give a 1 star but the best I can do is 2. Needs lots of improvement with food and he needs to be a lot happier or at least act like it around customers. read more

It's been awhile since my last review, so figured it s time to update it. We have been here often over the last eight years - usually for lunch but an occasional dinner or drinks and apps on the patio with friends. Our most recent visit was dinner to celebrate our 47th wedding anniversary. It still maintains it's casual atmosphere. The entrance has shifted to the Ridge Street side of the building. A good decision. It always felt a bit cramped to check in in the bar area especially when they are busy. Dining area is now mostly in the back room. While the setting is casual, the food is upscale - including the burgers. They offer game meats, elk, kangaroo, venison, and wild boar, in addition to high end beef and a small selection of seafood. They also have a few vegetarian/vegan options. I had the Citrus Glazed Salmon with root vegetables and squash. It was very good. The salmon was fresh and and flaky and perfectly cooked. My husband had the Rock Candy Short Rib. He deemed it "acceptable" Mine was paired with a light dry Savengon Blanc. Service was good and our satisfaction was checked. I debated between a 4 or 5 star experience - I decided on 5 mostly due to the quality of the meal. Return visit? Yes. read more

I got the grilled cheese short rib sandwich and there was plenty of meat however even though it was candied, it really was too salty for Me and I love short rib. I would like to try the poutine next time. Also had the egg rolls which in My opinion were a little dry. The flavor wasn't bad, it was just different. I asked for a vodka soda and it was flat. I never said anything because when I asked the bartender to ask My waiter for salad dressing since they forgot to put any on My salad, he acted very strange (I can't even explain it). When I had asked him, the waiter came out and was walking past Me w the bartender still standing w his back towards Me, I got the waiters attention Myself and then the bartender spoke up after Me saying" she's asking for something. Something? I made it clear I wanted dressing. I also found it odd that he spoke to 99% of the people in the restaurant like they were regulars(they could have been) but kept going back every 10 min to each table again and again. Now I know some of you might say thats excellent customer service yet did he really know all the people? And why didn't he come to our table...this is why I didn't mention My flat drink. I also don't agree with the podium being by the front door. It got stuffy trying to make My way out as people were coming in. The waiter was nice. He was new and relied upon his trainer as he followed her on her heels everywhere which looked a little odd but understandable. I would go back to try something different as stated. Cuban pork belly sandwich and truffle fries were delicious. Atmosphere was great, and the bartender was both friendly and efficient.

I'm not really quite sure why this place is popular or why others have told me to try it. The food/ingredients themselves were of good quality but the concepts of both our dishes left a lot to the imagination. If you are going to make a meatball sub maybe do something to elevate it... I have had better from Capriottis... and this open faced Ruben... not sure why... just give us the other piece of bread. The drink smelled lovely and my husband enjoyed it it. I still find the atmosphere to be so dang disappointing and stand behind the significant disconnect between the menu and the ambience. We came to WPH on a whim last night and surprisingly disappointed. We were sat promptly a the hostess and waitress were very helpful and polite. They seem to have updated their chairs, and they felt like cheap patio furniture. I think they were made of plastic. My wife's go to is one of the salads with a chicken breast. They upped the price on the menu to $10 for a chicken breast on a salad. Total cost was $26. I get that pried have gone up, but this felt ridiculous. She couldn't believe it and ordered the chicken sandwich instead which was $16. My favorite item on the menu was the venison patty melt. They changed the menu and it is now only offered during lunch which was a big disappointment. That melt and the sweet potato fries are why I come back. They charge an upscale price, but do not offer an upscale experience. I don't see myself coming back anytime soon. read more

The steak on the steak salad was absolutely microwaved and tough. The burgers are incredibly salty. This place is marked on google as dog friendly. They are NOT DOG friendly on the patio, they won't even allow you to have your dog leashed just outside of the patio. They were rude to us for even giving our dog ice cubes. As a former smoker, smoked old fashioneds usually make me cough when you take the top off. It was topless and when it got to me, the smoke was gone but the sublime taste was still there! The food is actually pretty good, but I'm giving a bad review for a specific reason. I have severe nut allergies. After repeated inquiries to the waiter and assured no nuts. Dinner was fine. But then the bread pudding deserted, I put it in my mouth and instantly knew. The waiter talked the chef, oops. I burned through a $150 EpiPen & an over $1400 ER copay and overnight in the hospital. I ordered the duck risotto which was also decent but the duck had a ton of fat still on it. I know it's a fattier piece of meat but typically when I get it at restaurants there isn't as much fat. The biggest issue we had was we came in a group of 4 and asked to be on separate checks. The waitress said the system doesn't allow that and the bill was on one check but they could split it evenly 4 ways but we all go different prices items. While looking for a place to enjoy a good steak-this was rated as a top choice. While their Elk was top notch, service was great, and charcuterie was enough to feed 4-there were some misses. It is definitely not a place for kids-no kids menu-also best to call for menu before coming as items seem to be ever changing. Potstickers were HEAVY on the star anise flavor making it almost unenjoyable. The duck was a little tough and not as good as Ive had elsewhere. Harvest salad was delish. Drinks were good. We ordered several "small" but not so small plates because we could not choose which ones to try! We also ordered a few cocktails. Pork belly Mac and cheese was the best (sorry too tasty, no pic) Portion sizes were large for small plates and easily could work for an entree or sharing. They have many full size entrees as well. Street parking available, meter if during the day. Place is a good size and we were seated quickly. The restaurant is a retro/rustic modern vibe. The last time I came to this location was when it was SoDo. I was not as impressed as I thought I should be. Upon entering, we were greeted half heartedly. We sat near the bar on a high top. We were comfortable. My meal, schnitzel, was tasty although the meat a bit fatty and tough. The rye spatzel had little taste or substance. I took half home as it was a large serving. I enjoyed a cocktail, the washojito, prior to being served. The rest of our table went low key casual for their meals. A veggie. Burger, beet salad and venison burger. I will say the sweet potato waffle fries were yummy and addicting. I was interested in dessert and asked our server for recommendations. He didn't rave about anything in particular but recommended the basque cheesecake or Crème brûlée. I went with cheese cake. It was good although I do prefer more traditional NY cheese cake with graham cracker crust. The berry compote and whipped cream were well done and a nice compliment. We noticed there wasn't a chocolate option which was a downer. My overall feel was that the staff was tired. There was no enthusiasm and the vibe a bit low. For a Saturday evening it was very slow. Lunch ends at 2pm and dinner begins at 4pm. Had a great Jalepeno cocktail, and the Pork Belly Bahn Mi, with pickled vegetables. The sandwich was hot and good. Tender pork belly and thick slices of jalepeno, and good amount of sauce. I love pickled vegetables and always order them whenever available. These were not super pickly but a refreshing side.
