A solid local neighborhood option. I say this with love, you aren't really coming here for ambiance. Most recently went for dinner in a Sunday and they were busy but not packed. I may have also swallowed another piece of staples as I'm currently experiencing GI discomfort. The food was otherwise fine but I can't get over this safety concern. Was on Cortelyou and stopped by Kumo Sushi to order some dinner to go. Got two special rolls for $12-14 each, one of which was the sunset roll and the one I enjoyed more. Not sure why there is a bad review questioning the cleanliness of the place. Restaurant was very clean (has A grade) and staff was really friendly. Sushi was very good especially for the price. Split 5 rolls with my roommate and it came out to 35 each for us and we ordered quite a few speciality rolls. Loved the shrimp tempura, crunchy salmon roll, and the yellowtail special roll. Definitely will be going back to get more and try their bento box lunch special!! read more

One of the worst sushi spots I've been to and it's shocking because of the astronomical prices for rolls. $5.25 for a philly roll, seriously? This isn't a bougie spot in Manhattan. Had the rolls tasted great, I wouldn't have been so dumbfounded. Unfortunately, calling my experience mediocre would be an understatement. Thankfully, we showed up during their lunch special, which goes into 3:30pm, and 3 rolls were $12.50 - it was at least a bit of a relief paying $4 each for those rolls. Ordered the chicken katsu bento box and the 3 rolls (Alaskan, Philadelphia, and shrimp tempura) for lunch. There were a total of 3 sets of customers seated at the restaurant between the time we arrived and left. It took us, no joke, 45 minutes to get our order. Were they plucking the chicken in the back? Had we not been in a hurry or if the food was delicious, I wouldn't have minded the wait, but neither was the case. The breaded chicken tasted foul. I don't know what it was about the chicken but it tasted bitter. I couldn't eat more than a few pieces of it. The salmon in the Alaskan roll tasted pretty badly. I tried to mask it with a ton of soy sauce with no avail. The shrimp tempura was one of those rolls where they take a baby shrimp and extend it before breading to make a roll out of it. It just doesn't work that way. It was also masked in sauce so you didn't even know what you were eating. There are too many alternative places with cheaper prices. They either need to step up their sushi game or lower their prices because not many people will stay as customers with a high price low quality combo. read more

Honestly, the best Japanese lunch box menu in the area. The maki rolls were fresh. We ordered salmon teriyaki and it also came with shumai, sautéed veggies, and premium rice - jasmine. We also ordered unagi roll to share. So stuffed! The service was also attentive. Thank you Kumo! read more

My friends and I ordered a huge amount of takeout. They offer a lot of delicious and fun vegetarian rolls. They made zero mistakes on any special requests. Everything was packaged well and there were plenty of chopsticks. I highly recommend the sweet potato roll with an added crunch. And the vegetarian rainbow roll was wonderful. read more

Have eaten at the actual restaurant numerous time. Decent service and Sushi is decent. But after today NEVER AGAIN Ordered a few sushi rolls on a delivery app and the restaurants delivery driver immediately said "where's tip". I replied " hold on let me get the food and I'll grab your tip" (because u should never tip unless u double check to see if your order is correct). He refused to give the food unless we tipped him "no tip no food!". I was so mad that I walked back in my door and asked someone else to go out and give the tip and get the food because I was livid. The driver took the tip then complained that it wasn't enough and he's never coming back here, then proceeded to place the bag of food on the steps of our porch in the RAIN. We called the delivery service app to complain, and they tried very hard to get redemption on our behalf: Be it a discount or even an apology, the restaurant REFUSED to even acknowledge that this happened. The delivery app kept apologizing for Kumo sushi's terrible response and service. They offered us their own discount on our next order, even though the restaurant completely refused to even call and offer an apology! I'll never be eating from Kumo again, either delivery or walk in. That was the worst business practice I've ever experienced. Number 1: A tip is optional not mandatory. Number 2: you give the food first then u get the tip, as waiters and waitresses do and most delivery persons. Number 3: if you want more money as a delivery driver ask for a better wage and stop relying on tips or don't complain when someone doesn't tip you. Tipping itself should be left in another decade as it's just an excuse for restaurants to pay their employees less and not offer W2's, but that's another story. The only reason we even tipped this dude after the fact was so he didn't hold our food hostage. Truly deplorable. I'll never forget it.... sad read more

So I feel a lot of the hate comes from odd things- credit card minimums (should be pretty clear with signage) or odd issues with delivery. I was a bit worried going in based on the negative reviews. When I checked if the miso soup and tofu teriyaki were vegetarian, she could have just lied and said yes, but instead she checked with the kitchen, and told me that not only do both of those include fish, but actually every hot entree sauce has fish. Every one!! I could have ordered vegetarian sushi, but it was 30F outside and I'd been hoping for a hot meal, so I ordered edamame, vegetable gyoza without sauce (that sauce also has fish), and a hot sake for the table. The edamame were good but quite salty, the gyoza were kinda boring but a good contrast with the edamame. Sake was good. My dining companions had teriyaki and ramen. On the one hand, the kitchen forgot a large chunk of egg shell left in a fried egg. I have been here to eat (in) 3x now, and each time, the entire dining room smells strongly of decomposing trash. The 1st time, I was told that it was b/c I was sitting near the kitchen. Visiting a friend in the neighborhood and looking for a bite late on a Monday night, was headed to a Thai place nearby but we parked in front of here, it had an A health code and sushi on a hot night seemed to be the choice. Nice decor, sat in a booth by the sushi bar, service was fine, the sushi rolls were a healthy size, and not too much rice. Edamame was a large portion as well. Prices seemed reasonable. Beware. They have a $10 minimum for credit cards, and will FIGHT you if you order their $9.75 (total with tax) lunch special and dare to try and use a credit card. They will LIE and tell you their "machine won't take less than $10," but this is absolutely untrue. And the manager will shout in your face over a quarter, even if you have been a kind customer for years. They shouldn't be offering a lunch special for $8.95 if they won't accept a credit card for it. Whatever I thought about them in the past has been completely overshadowed by this.
