I visited The Garden for their ramen, which hits every time! Their portions are very generous. It's also one of the few ramen spots in the area that is open before 5 pm. I got the Tan Tan Ramen, which was delicious and flavorful with a bit of spice but not too much! It also came with a lot of toppings such as ground meat, bamboo shoots, ginger, and mushrooms! It's a very filling dish. I also ordered the Kakuni Bun, which is a soft bun with pork belly, lettuce, and mayo. One of my personal faves!! Cute spot located at the end of Cortelyou with a nice backyard and chill vibes. The staff were very attentive and friendly. We each got a ramen (shio, tonkotsu and spicy miso), the yellow tail jalapeño app, and the portions are good. The app isn't too remarkable, fish was fresh but portions are a little low for the price and I didn't care too much for the topping.They ramen is flavored well, although just a bit too salty. Each bowl comes with a few toppings that I appreciate I didn't have to add on as extra, such as and egg, bamboo shoots and woodear mushroom. First time trying was really in the mood for ramen. I got the tan tan ramen which was spectacular! The broth is miso based and has a slight spice to it but it wasn't too spicy for me ( and I usually can't tolerate spicy broths). I chose that ramen because it came with ground pork, which I never tried in ramen before and it was the best choice! The noodles were cooked just right. Updating my review to rave about the Garden's impressive af sushi too! Hands down the best quality ramen and sushi in the area and I don't think it's getting enough love that it deserves. I recently shared a Sushi Omakase set ($105) with my bf and every bite was so fresh and delicious. Even the tuna! Which can tend to be too fake and rubbery at most places - not here. Each piece was melt-in-your-mouth good. Very reasonable price point as well; we were so full by the end of our meal and we are fairly big eaters. Less than a month later we returned for a ramen brunch and this time, each of our ramens came with a complimentary app/side - what a deal! (perhaps a lunch special) We got a plate of the karaage and a plate of gyoza to share and they did not skimp. So worth it at $17 per person. We also added a couple orders of sushi for the perfect, well-rounded meal. Having visited 3x in 2 months, the Garden has become one of our go-tos. read more

I went here for dinner with a couple friends. The food and portion was great. I ordered the karage chicken, spicy miso ramen, and a yuzu margarita. The karage chicken had great flavor (add a squeeze of lemon that comes with it). The spicy miso ramen was very rich and dense with minced pork, scallion, bamboo shoots, bean sprout, mushroom, and egg. The yuzu margarita had a good balance of smokiness and spicyness. I can't stand a f**king "hurry up and buy" experience. This place, like many East Asian joints, excels on efficiency, but fails completely on personality. The food is average to great, and the restaurant is comfortable enough, but the staff is always cold and robotic. It never seems they're interested in making you a regular. Grabbed take out from this place tonight - disappointing. I ordered a house salad and they didn't add anything other than lettuce and avocado. Had to add my own dressing and it was rather expensive. I ordered the Chicken Katsu Don to-go and it was a very large portion size and so flavorful! It came with a miso soup as well, all for $17 and some change + tax and tip. I ended up saving half for leftovers and they tasted just as delicious, if not more delicious, with all the juices soaked in the day after. The employee who helped me was very friendly as well. Had high expectations for this place since it had so many good reviews. I found it to be just average in terms of the sushi rolls we ordered, not bad but also not great. The gyozas we got as an appetizer were also definitely from a frozen pack rather than homemade. It was nice and cozy in the restaurant. service was great, we asked for juice for my son and they quickly brought it out. I got the beef and chicken broth with chicken it was pretty decent. The beef was pretty strong. Would have liked it to be equally balanced, I'll probably try the veggie broth next time. The service was amazing. The interior design and atmosphere were very clean and nice. The overall vibe of the place was welcoming and decently lowkey, it is a perfect place to walk in on an afternoon- and I'm sure for a cozy and scenic dinner. There are only two Japanese restaurants on Courtelyou, and with how much I like the other establishment I knew I wanted to try The Garden. As its style and menu is vastly different than the other one, and clearly has its personal touch. My lower rating came from the food alone. Price ranges from 16-20 as per standard Japanese restaurants. Whilst the Garden focus on its ramen roster, the fish quality was still fresh and decently meaty. However, 5 dollars for a singular sushi(nigiri) dish, and 10 dollars for 6 TINY sushi rolls was difficult to stomach. Once again, the quality of the fish is good! But the portion size comparative with the price tag is a little steep. The ramen itself is just alright. The broth lacks tare and depth, which gives you the idea of flavour but quite one dimensional. The portion for ramens generous, and definitely fill you with warm broth at the end of the meal. I find the ramen itself way too generic and lacking to be at the helm of this restaurant, as I believe they serve other rice dish that also looked very promising. Overall, it is a surprise how well received this restaurant is. Which, given the area and the demographics, it definitely checks out. Being on the more gentrified side of the street definitely demands more in prices to begin with, and I will not fault a restaurant for doing what it has to do. But this first time, the food was not impressive, and gave me the feeling that I had metaphorically ate some idea of food that won't stick with me for long. I would like to return again in the future to explore the other side of the menu, as I do believe that there are more I just haven't seen yet. It is at the end of the day very beautiful with good services. I'm sure there's a reason why people like it as much as they do. read more

Rich broth with depth of flavor. I loved the variety of toppings that were included. You can add other things for an additional charge, but we felt it was "loaded" as-is! In the '90's, in NY, I was privy of lots of good sushi restaurants, but then a lot of other asians started ruining the quality. This one is not a genuine Japanese owned restaurant.
