This cafe was adorable. The food was not only flavorful, but beautifully presented as well. I ordered the Tostada Sunrise with a side of cheesy grits to start, then treated myself to a snickerdoodle cookie and a hot white chocolate chai with oat milk to round everything out. The cookie was baked to soft perfection. I went with a friend who thankfully knew to join the waitlist about an hour before we planned to arrive, which made the wait very manageable. Let me preface this review by stating that I have been to this establishment multiple times & had glowing, amazing service each time. However, my last experience with this establishment left a horrible taste in my mouth. Therefore, I am giving them an extra star for the previous experiences. On May 17th, 2026, my best friend and I had been looking forward to coming to Water Oak all day and had our taste buds set for the occasion. We were famished and had quite a day up until arriving. Upon entering the restaurant, we were very briefly greeted by the a Hispanic man who I assume is the manager and told that they were "no longer seating for the day". I glanced around and saw that every table inside WAS seated, however there were many tables outside that were empty. I asked about the patio stating that us where we preferred to sit anyway, and was met with that they were also not seating the patio at all for the rest of the day. However, there was a group of 3 women seated outside on the patio at that exact time. I didn't say anything, simply turned and left. After having "one of those days" hashing out something so minute with a person who clearly didn't want us in their place of business was not something I was about to do. Keep in mind, we came on a Sunday afternoon. Prime brunch time. We arrived at the restaurant around 2:30PM, and their website says they don't close until 4PM. I am a biracial black woman and my friend is white. I noticed a significant amount of White and Latino patrons, but a shocking lack of Black people. With Houston having one of the most diverse populations in the US, it is almost impossible not to see at least one individual of each ethnicity in a place at any given time. I am definitely not one that likes to pull the race card, because oftentimes that is not the issue. However, as someone who is familiar with the service industry I understand Sundays can be extremely overwhelming. And I am cognizant that not everything is that serious. But, I am also aware that a lot of people in the industry discriminate against people of color, with stigmas that we don't leave enough gratuity or we "don't fit the vibe of their establishment". And those 3 women seated on the patio? All White. After reading recent reviews, it seems that management is discriminating against people of color, more specifically Black folks. This is an extremely disheartening and sickening realization to make, seeing as I have given well over $1,000 worth of my money here but also enjoyed many meals without issue. To management: It breaks my heart to have to write this review and to be honest, I wouldn't have written it if I hadn't seen others posting about similar experiences in addition to also feeling discriminated against. I highly suggest that if you are "not seating" after a specific time, you announce this via social media or alert potential patrons with a sign or something of the sort. & obviously, there is such an issue with treatment towards POC that it is a noteworthy problem via your Google & Yelp reviews. You will have a much bigger fish to fry on your hands if you continue to let this issue go on unrectified. I would be willing to return if I felt things were to be changed for the better in the future! My sister and I treated our mom here for mother's day. We knew the wait would be long so we were prepared. I joined the wait line at 9:15 and we didn't get seated till 11. I called a few days before to ask and the lady was nice enough to let me know when to get on the wait list for the best possible outcome of being seated when we got there. We got there about 30 minutes before we were seated so it wasn't too bad. Remember it was a holiday and brunch is popular for mother's day. The inside is so cute and the bakery food looked so good. The hostess and server we got were so nice. I got the Brisket Benny with a side of fruit. The brisket was sooo tender and flavorful. The biscuit it was on was yummy too. My mom got the Italian Omelet with a side of cheese grits. She didn't like that the spinach still had the stems but other than that it was very good and the cheese grits were seasoned nicely. We brought them home and my 10 month old LOVED them. My sister had the bacon egg and cheese croissant with a side of potatoes and we all shared the waffle. My sister doesn't drink but she got a sprite with pineapple juice and she loved it. My mom got the bloody marry. She loved it. I'm not a fan of tomato juice BUT I'd definitely get one next time I go. Would definitely comeback and try something new next time. We left for our other activity and then came back and decided to try the dessert portion of the restaurant. Went to Water Oak Cafe for a team lunch. Dena was extremely helpful in assisting with setting up the reservation and answering questions. The restaurant is very nice, but space is limited. They get busy and packed. My coworker ordered pies to go and stated they were the best pies she'd ever had. Staff were friendly and attentive. Although our party was large, our waiter did a great job with taking orders and checking in. Food was really good, and so was the coffee. I got the chicken and waffles. I was totally shocked when I walked in that it looked like an instgrammable cafe. Was not expecting that and it was super cute! Since it's more of a breakfast/brunch/lunch place then it's not open for dinner. So it does get a bit packed...I recommend going online and placing yourself on the wait-list either when you leave your house or almost there. I did it while we were finding parking and that saved us time from checking in inside and waiting. So total we probably waited 10 minutes instead of the 25-30 minutes listed on the website. If you want to order ahead and pick up you can. Or grab a cute treat but walking all the way to the back and you can she the delicious deserts and purchase one while waiting for your table. The seating waiting area is a bit small but the inside is a bit small also. There is also plenty of outside seating but in the Houston heat it was ideal. Brisket biscuit benny must be a new addition to the menu this year, so I tried this dish. It wasn't bad, but I wasn't crazy about it. I thought the brisket would have more flavor. Given Water Oak Cafe & Bakery is in a strip mall on the corner, it says a lot that the vibe of the restaurant is comfortable and cozy. One could easily forget where they are. The place is hopping. We didn't have reservations, but were able to snag a table pretty easily. Everyone got something different and the food was quite delicious. Items ordered included Seasonal Quiche with fruit and crispy potatoes, the Water Oak Benny, Over Easy Egg Tostada and The Hamwich. Given we did a good job of exploring the menu, it's a good bet you'll find something that strikes our fancy. On top of that, you'll enjoy your food. I really wanted to like Water Oak Cafe & Bakery after seeing it online. Unfortunately, it did not live up to expectations. As you'd expect at any brunch spot on a weekend around 11 a.m., there was quite a wait. However, the waitlist system was effective and convenient. All you have to do is go to the website or Google the restaurant, and there should be a link. There's plenty of shaded outdoor seating. The weather was nice as well today, so that was a plus. Once your table is ready, you'll get a text to head inside. The staff will guide you to your table. The inside is bright, welcoming, and aesthetic. There's a lunch and brunch menu with a variety of options. Whatever your preference, I'm sure most people will find something that suits their palate. Before I go on, I'd just like to disclose that I'm the type of person who looks at restaurant menus beforehand. Little did I know that this would be my downfall. I had preemptively decided on the Rise N' Shine Breakfast Sandwich. I remember seeing it on a past iteration of the menu online, and it sounded good. I ordered it today without looking more closely at the new version of the menu item. My first impression: "This is small... did I actually get what I ordered?" The answer is yes, yes I did. The sandwich is basically a fried chicken sandwich that comes on a blueberry biscuit with a side of spicy raspberry jam. At first, I tried eating it like a sandwich. It was a bit difficult. I gave up three or four bites in. Part of what made it hard to eat is that the biscuit itself was dry. Very dry. I'm sorry to say this, but it was a degree drier than a Popeyes biscuit. When I tried cutting the sandwich instead, that hardness persisted. It took some effort to cut through the whole sandwich. Also, the chicken did not taste seasoned, nor was the jam spicy. As I hinted earlier, there were apparently older versions of this menu item. Those iterations came on either a brioche or jalapeño cheddar bun, with other variations in the sandwich itself. I think those would have been much better than the sandwich I had today. Or maybe today was just an off day. On the bright side, the fruit cup I had as a side was great and refreshing. I was also able to try a bit of the waffles and brunch potatoes. The waffles are good but not great--comparable to hotel waffles. The potatoes were nice, especially with the garlic aioli. Despite the downsides of the meal, I had great company, which distracted me from choking on the biscuit. Our waitress was also very nice and prompt. She checked on us regularly. The restrooms are also very clean. Overall, it'll be a while before I see myself coming back. I do still recommend this place to anyone who would like a cafe with a nice atmosphere and solid service. read more

Our group of four went on a Monday morning around 10:45. Place is bright and clean, it was busy but we were seated quickly. Hubby and his 89 yo mom ordered a traditional breakfast with eggs, bacon, sausage, grits and toast. SIL and I ordered a vegetable and a ham and cheese quiche. It was a nice size and served with fresh fruit. We all agreed the food tasted very good. Drinks refilled quickly and service very attentive. Want to come back for lunch. Fantastic fresh tasting food! I can't order anything past their tacos because they're so tasty. I usually order the vegetarian sausage just to change up things and the tacos are big and tasty. The green sauce they come with is not too spicy but very flavorful. From what I can see most portions are very generous. I've invited several friends to go eat breakfast with me there and they really liked it, but I might stop because it'll make the place crowded! Water Oak is a solid spot for a quick brunch or lunch in the Clear Lake / Webster area. Both brunch and lunch are served all day. The system is a little different: it's not full sit-down but it's not counter service either. You check in at the hostess stand, get seated at a table, but still have to get up and order at the counter using your table number. We chose to sit outdoors since it was a really nice day out. They seated us promptly with no wait (I believe there was a wait for indoor seating at the time). We were seated at an outdoor table next to a heater, however the closed umbrella on the table was blocking our view of each other. I'm on the taller side, so this may not be a problem for the average joe. Story to follow and photo attached for visual. My main complaint here is the rude manager Alan. When we walked in, he was helping out at the hostess stand, looking super disinterested and barely made eye contact. When he walked past our table, we asked if he could open the umbrella so that I could look at my company as I talked to them. He rudely told us "no, because the umbrella is next to the heater," and just walked away. Absolutely no will or desire to help the customers out, where I easily saw two quick fixes for this. 1) The heater could have been turned off, or 2) Our table could have shifted over a bit since there was about 10 feet between our table and the next one. But his churlish attitude and unwillingness to help out left a bad taste in my mouth before the food even came out. Food is decent. I ordered the Crispy Chicken Sandwich on the lunch menu. It came out promptly. The chicken was crispy on the outside but slightly dry on the inside. it could have been seasoned a little more as well. For my side, I got sweet potato waffle fries, which were really good and came with a tasty dipping sauce. My sister ordered the Rise 'N Shine Breakfast Sandwich on the brunch menu, but it came out way later than everyone else's dish. Weird timing, since one would think this would be the quickest to make out of what everyone had ordered. I do wish they would think about improving the ordering system a little bit. If you are going to be seated by the hostess but not have full service, perhaps they can implement ordering via unique QR code at the table, rather than having to go up to the counter to place an order. Have been a regular customer for over a year. I will not go back. Their food is good. The attitude of the female manager is horrible. At a previous visit I had ordered the pancakes with the bananas cooked in. It is not the regular way they do it but upon asking our server and then they check, it was able to be done. It came out amazing! My last visit I asked for the same thing as I wanted it for my birthday. The server said they could not and I explained the previous visit to her. She went and checked and very quickly came back with the female manager. (I don't know any of their names as they did not offer that). The manager immediately said they could not do it. She had talked with the cook and said it would not cook correctly. I explained my previous experience again and said how they tasted amazing and nothing was wrong with them. What a complete difference from the previous times I've been here. From the minute, I walked in and was greeted- Everything just felt off. I spent 20 years in the service industry and now that I have a nursing degree I still work a ton, but my days off are even more precious to me and I really try to pick and choose where I go to eat based on past experiences and Water Oak has never disappointed with friendliness and service and most of the time the food is on point. Certain things I've overlooked just because the rest of the experience has made up for it. For some reason this place cannot get making eggs to order correct. I can tell you with without hesitation every time I have ordered my eggs over medium they have always come out over easy or even less than over easy where the whites were still undercooked in some parts. This time I ordered poached because I know from personal experience that poached eggs-the whites are cooked all the way through and the inside can still be runny- I prefer my eggs over medium, but I did not want to take the chance that it was going to be undercooked again today. How this place managed to undercook the whites on a poached egg when they even cut into the egg to check for doneness doesn't make sense to me. But I was perfectly kind about pointing it out to the server that immediately when I cut into the egg, there was slimy undercooked egg whites, and that is inedible to me. I can handle the runny yolk, but not the slimy egg white. I told her about past experience where the eggs are always undercooked when I asked for over medium and she proceeded to say, would you like it over hard which doesn't make sense to me because I ordered poached initially so obviously I don't want something that is similar to a hard boiled egg. I told her no I do not like over hard. I would prefer over medium, but I just want an egg where the egg whites are not undercooked. I was assuming I would get back a poached egg just cooked longer. She brought me a fried egg on my tostadas that were cooked over hard. It wasn't what I wanted, and I was surprised that I was given fried eggs that were basically burnt around the edges because it came across as pretty passive aggressive for the person preparing my food to go from the poach to the extreme of over hard fried eggs, but I gave them the benefit of the doubt , smiled and accepted the food with the thought that maybe it was over medium on the inside and boy was I wrong. They were both over hard and I didn't even end up eating the second egg. And at no time in the 20 minutes that I sat there with the food at the table after I was brought the re-cooked tostadas did the server ever offer to refill my chai latte or if i wanted something else to drink, nor did she pick up my empty coffee cup. She never checked to see if the food was OK the second time around- i wasnt brought out a new set of silverware(they were taken with my first plate because i was outside and had nowhere clean to put them)- i ate my tostadas with a spoon. A smile doesn't make up for the inattentiveness. There was no rudeness- just nothing more than bare minimum order taking and refilling water. Im not going to do your job for you. I did want a second drink and I did want to get some sort of pastry or dessert to go afterwards, but after the multiple failures during this visit, I just wanted to pay and get out of there. I honestly have no intention of ever coming back and I know one less guest is probably nothing to this place and maybe my review is just going to get a bunch of eye rolls. It just isn't a place I want to spend my money at anymore- which is incredibly disappointing given the fact that this has been my go to spot since they opened. Side note: I had re-edited with a little sidenote about other people's reviews of their egg issue, but since the business owner wanted to nonchalantly call me out on something that I CLEARLY stated in my own review- I did accept the 2nd plate that she brought me, smiled and answered yes it looks OK when she asked me if it looked OK-thats called MANNERS; one would assume that a server would come by and check that it tastes OK as well, which was never done by the way. After 10 minutes, I got a refill on my empty water glass and no further interaction until everything was pushed to the side of the table. As I stated before , I do not do the servers work for them . I'm well aware the chai latte is not refillable. Maybe read the reviews a little slower and take some time to actually think from the point of view of the guest before responding. Wanting a refill doesnt mean I want something free; It means maybe I wanted a second latte or I wanted a different cup of coffee. The fact that the business owner was so quick to respond and try to gaslight their own guest is more than enough reason for me to never even think about stepping foot in that establishment again. read more

The coffee was fantastic. My French Omelette was delicious and my daughter's Tostada Sunrise was exceptional. The presentation was appetizing also. The Brunch potatoes were perfect. Cubes so crispy on the outside, soft on the inside with the right amount of seasoning. The sauces served with the meals added unique flavor that was very satisfying! We stopped by here on our way to the Space Center. My husband said his Water Oak Benny was the best in his life, lol. I enjoyed the bacon mushroom quiche and arugula salad. The pastry case is beautiful and the food is delicious. The space is bright and cheerful. Dena, the owner, and her husband are very hands on. Breakfast was AMAZING! The avocado toast....phenomenal. The breakfast potatoes...superb. The waffle with blueberries...perfectly delicious! The iced latte was expresso strong. Lol. Met my sister for breakfast and decided to try Water Oak. So glad we did! Greeted and seated promptly by smiling/friendly staff. The atmosphere was relaxed, colorful and bright - a nice airy vibe. Rachel, our server, was so kind and patient as us sisters gabbed over hot tea and cappuccino before ordering our meal. The seasonal mini quiche served w fresh fruit was delicious. My sister enjoyed the signature Water Oak breakfast. We took mini key lime and mini french silk pies to go (which are amazing!). A steady stream of diners confirmed this is a very popular place. Raniyah was our server and she was fantastic! Very attentive and checked on us frequently! The food was great! I ordered the Toastado Sunrise with chorizo and my fiance had chicken and waffles. We swapped plates to try the others food and I was in love with both! The vibes were great and i loved the playlist! Chocolate chip cookie 10/10 recommend! Best cookie i've had in my life. Posting this late, but I ordered the Funfetti Cake with Vanilla Buttercream icing last month for my work team, and several people commented that it was the best cake they had ever eaten! And I agreed! It was unbelievably moist! Every time I visit or call in an order, the staff is very helpful! I also just received an email that they are open 7 days a week now!
