Waterloo Ice House has specials every day, but Thursdays are the best in my opinion. You get to play music bingo, enjoy 50 cent boneless wings, and starting at 9pm is reverse happy hour. In March they had a 1970s Throwback menu every Thursday, and we ordered their double cheeseburger with tater tots. I had mediocre expectations of breakfast at an ice house, and I'd say the experience about matched what I expected. Our server was not the most friendly and was forgetful, never bringing hot sauce that was requested. The scramble was fine, but a little bland and a bit overloaded with the tortilla strips. The accompanying salsa was not very fresh. The cinnamon nut pancake was really good though. Sweet, hot, and hit the spot. My friend's omelette looked sad and said the cheese tasted like those fake squares. Always enjoy eating here. I had the Grilled Salmon with a Garden Salad and fresh Veggies. The Garden Salad was really good. The lettuce and all the other vegetables in it were cold, fresh and crisp. The salmon was cooked and seasoned perfectly. It was delicious. The broccoli and carrots were okay...the carrots weren't cooked long enough...they were still hard. Overall it was a good meal. My wife ordered the Bacon, Egg, Cheese and Tater Tot Breakfast Tacos. She said they were delicious. The waitress was very friendly, polite and welcoming. She was also the bartender. She was pulling double duty, yet she stayed on top of things. She was very attentive and made sure we had what we needed. My only complaint is, I had to ask her to bring my salad out before my meal. Which she did, but then she brought my meal out 10 seconds later. The restaurant is very clean. Waterloo has been a staple brunch spot for us for years so when we came in today and found out there was an updated menu, I wanted to update my Yelp review. To my shock I had never reviewed it! We started coming here because it's one of the few spots in town that has the chicken fried steak BREAKFAST which is mandatory for the husband, he orders it 3/4 times. Not only do they have it but it's delicious! One of our favs. Plus they have hash browns which is another non-negotiable for him. I have several items I like to order- avocado toast is great, love the feta addition (server said the new version has sliced avo instead of mashed but I'm sure it's still great), love the build your own tacos, can't go wrong with the huevos rancheros. This time I tried a new menu item, the southern Benedict- fried chicken breast on a biscuit with a poached and sausage gravy- and it was delicious! Though I did think it needed a splash of Cholula to perfect it. I see reviews complaining about service- every time we have ever ate here the service has been awesome; servers are friendly, waits are shorter than quoted, and I love how easy it is to split a tab even with a large group. Y'all I have been to Waterloo a couple of times before and nothing to write about but this past weekend we went and it was amazing! Two things to note - they had happy hour that included Mexican martinis on a Saturday! And they have catfish bites that are the best I have ever had. Bar none! Everything else was good as well and the kids liked their pancakes and eggs. One thing to note - if you sit outside - you can see your kids play in the huge playscape area. We came here for breakfast, and everything was absolutely wonderful! I ordered an omelet with hash browns and it was perfect: the hash browns were slightly crispy on the outside, soft on the inside, and not overcooked, which often happens in diners. The omelet was incredibly tender and delicious. What impressed us even more was that we asked for decaf coffee, and they specially prepared it for us -- such a thoughtful touch! The service was excellent: the staff was friendly and efficient, and the place was very clean. This spot is clearly popular; it was quite busy in the morning, but that didn't affect the speed or quality of the service. We left with full stomachs and great impressions. I have been over a dozen times to Waterloo Southpark Meadows and the waitstaff, service, and food are all amazing. No matter what size of party you have or if you are just meeting up with a friend or coworker for happy hour there is a place and seat here for you. The bar top is always a great way to hang, get a fast drink, and place your order for food ahead of the brunch, lunch, dinner, and shopping crowds. I love the curated games they bring in weekly that includes games like Sing-o which is a bingo-style game that you are mark off any song/artist you know on a card (bingo card). You basically play for gift cards that go from $10 - $50 that is totally worth the time and fun you will have if you stay. I see that there are some regulars that show up to play too which is always fun to see folks really get into the game. Trivia, sports game watching, and large spaces to come bring your family and friends all together on the patio are other things they got going on here. Food is piping hot and I love that each month they have a themed-menu of cocktails and drinks they offer. Right before ACL Music Festival they had these fun cocktails that were named after the headliners for this past year (Dua Lipa, Blink 182, etc). read more

This place is pretty great. For some reason I forgot about it for a good 15 years but have been here a half-dozen times this year and each time has been a great experience. I won't lie - nostalgia plays a big role for me here. Going to Waterloo as a young (not a typo, yes: a young) in '90s was an event. That is what pulled me back in earlier this year - that along with a convenient location. Each time I've been here, the service is superb. The wait staff is super friendly and attentive and the food comes out fairly quickly. I'm absolutely not one of those "Austin is terrible now" doomsayers, but there is something about "old Austin" (relative term to everybody) that holds a place in my heart. That lure is what makes me come to Waterloo from time to time - now located where there used to be a big field that used to host concerts (I saw Metallica at Southpark Meadows in 1994). That confluence of old and new is what keeps me coming back. Just kidding, I'm not really that complicated - I just really like the fish & chips here and the wait staff is always super friendly. We have been here many times and always enjoy it. Solid sports bar setup with several TVs. The staff is always friendly too. Today our waitress was Azaley and she did a great job and took good care of us. As for the food, their burgers are solid. I got the Guacamole Bacon Swiss burger & enjoyed it. My fiancé liked her blue cheese burger as well. The tots & fries that come with the burgers are also both solid, and we liked the chips & dip appetizer as well (I'd suggest the green salsa over the red one though). Only downside is sometimes the service can be slow, and a few of their tables are a little wobbly. Solid spot overall though. We will be back! read more

I went twice in two days back to back. My first experience was 5 stars - our waiter Isiah was so great! Constantly refilled waters and had food patience and knowledge of the menu. I got the Texas Philly that day and it was so good! If you like cheese like me, you'd definitely like this since it's topped with their queso instead of regular cheese. They gave a pretty large portion of tator tots, too. Worked out for me because I love tots! The food was super hot as well. My brother got a Mac and cheese side, which I took a few bites of and I would say to avoid ordering that here. Not enough cheese coating the noodles, tasted pretty bland. The next day, I would give my experience a 4. Waiter experience was not nearly as good, but not horrible either. I got the Guacamole Bacon Swiss this time - it was good but not mind blowing. My bottom bun got soaked from the Mayo/lettuce. The bacon they used in it was really good, didn't feel like the cheap microwave bacon some places use. Overall it just didn't feel like it had any mind blowing taste. Portion of tots seemed consistent with yesterday, so that's a plus. Overall, I wouldn't mind coming back but I'd probably keep getting the Texas Philly instead. The atmosphere seems fun (didn't go on a special event day but looks like they have trivia nights and other stuff) and overall the service wasn't slow either days like some reviews say. Everytime we go it is never packed, maybe one or two other tables, we are seated quickly, have amazing service and the food is always to our expectations. My husband got sick from the huevos rancheros (which were cold when they arrived) and my hello honey coffee was chunky. I asked for another one, and the second one was also chunky and tasted like something in it was bad. The Waterloo Benedict was okay, but I wouldn't get it again. Overall, not worth going. The Philly was served in what seemed a hot dog bun, very salty and clearly stated light cheese on my order and had what it look like extra cheese. They don't use plates anymore and instead use trays that the food barely fits into. It's hard to imagine how they are still in business.$15 dollars for a philly like this is ridiculous. I have been coming to this South Waterloo since 2007 or 2008 when I relocated from north Austin. My family and myself loved South Park Meadows. Basically I was over charged!!! I ordered 10 wings, cheese fries and a drink; then I added a cheeseburger "kids meal" which was up charged $1.50 for a salad instead of fries, on the menu there was a different price, like $0.89, then charged $0.79 for tomato, $0.79 for lettuce, $0.79 for pickles, and $0.79 for onions. When my $44 check came back I was confused. I asked the waitress why didn't mention that they charged for each added veggie? She left the check and walked away, as if she didn't care. The final bill was $52 because I always tip even when service is not that great. I pray that young lady learn to treat all customers fairly or at least communicate. I literally ask her if there were a price difference btw hamburger vs cheeseburger, yet she didn't think to inform me of the severe up charge!!! I pray that these restaurants do better, the economy is not that great and overcharging customers is wrong. Yes, I left her a 20% tip because I don't treat people the way they treat me. read more

The eggs were bland. The gravy was super peppery and overall didn't taste good. The worst part about all of this was the server, a blond short lady. Now, I understand there are bad days, but when you're in the service industry like this one, you need to be able to AT LEAST smile at the customers. Especially considered it was not a busy morning. We came here as I was told this was a great place to eat, however, I have to disagree, I got a Texas melt patty or something like that, but it was too dry, the patty was smaller than the bun and I had a lot of extra-not needed- bread. I got a side of tater tots which were also not as good. My daughter had mini corn dogs and they were so so. Honestly I don't understand all the great reviews. The place was nice although I thought it was more focused on children since it it an ice cream place, but no, it looks more like a bar than an ice cream parlor.
