Whether you're planning family vacation, a surf/kiteboarding trip, or just all around epic beach getaway- Watermen's Retreat in the Outer Banks is by far your best bet! I have taken two family trips to Watermen's Retreat this past year (once in August and once in Jan) and absolutely love the place. The location is amazing, the rooms are large, modern and luxurious, and the property itself is simply incredible. Watermen's backyard has a private slick and a HUGE, well-manicured lawn overlooking the Pamlico Sound. My son spent countless hours exploring the property looking for crabs, fish, snails and all sorts of other cool sea life. Unlike many rental homes or stuff hotels- there is plenty of open space for kids to run around and do kid stuff! Aside from hanging out at Watermen's- there is so much cool stuff for the entire family to do in the Outer Banks. Some recommendations include the North Carolina Aquarium in Manteo, Jenette's Pier in Nags Heads (my son loved this place!) and countless mini-golf courses all over. And let's not forget about watersports- the surfing and kiteboarding in the OBX can be world-class year round. Don't know how to surf, kiteboard or SUP? No problem- REAL Watersports (located right next to Watermen's) offers lessons for people of skill levels with their top notch coaches. Before concluding this post- I would be remiss if I didn't mention Watermen's Bar and Grill- which is on the resort property and overlooks the Pamlico Sound. The food here is amazing, and there is no better place on the entire east coast to eat dinner and watch the sunset! Watermen's Bar and Grill has an air conditioned dining room/bar as well a large open air dining area- which is the perfect spot for a family with young kids to eat, relax and not worry about their kids causing a ruckus or breaking things! Watermen's Bar and Grill also has some really great live music during the summer. I am looking forward to my next family trip to Watermen's Retreat- and highly recommend this resort to anyone looking for a spot for their next vacation.

I would have also liked to have rated this place higher but I can't in good faith do that. The resort is dated. The staff are all very nice but this is a resort standard. Nothing was exceptional or grand. It was all very overpriced for what you ended up with. My discounted rate should have been the normal rate. There is no way I would ever stay at this place at their listed normal rate. You'd have to be a fool. Honestly, You would be better off just renting a house for the price because the amenities are not worth it in this specific case. The food was mid but at arena prices. 20$ for a beer, 24$ for a burger, 4$ for an iced tea.. after the first day we just went into town for food. It ended up being much better economically and quality wise. The beach behind the resort is nothing remarkable. In fact it's sloped and awkwardly angled. The surrounding area itself is immaculate and lush with beauty and there are loads of things to do. It's definitely a family place and not an anything else kind of place so don't get any ideas. Kind of boring honestly, not really much going on. You really do have to make your own adventures. The complimentary bikes you can check out are all falling apart. The walls were so thin I could hear the conversations of the people in the room next to me. The power went out multiple times the day I was checking out which complicated things further including trying to get WiFi as well as the fact that they charged me for a latte that I never ordered and they had to remove it from my final bill. Good thing I checked. I am talking specifically about the resort and not the area itself. Parking was a free for all and there is no valet. If you leave your spot during the day good luck trying to get another one. If this place put some TLC into it they could turn it around very quickly.

That said, the property is showing its age. The units still have outdated Dish TV service, and the curtains are faded and dated. Most of the furniture is cloth and overdue for replacement. The area rugs are also a concern--they seem a little smelly and retain sand, which makes them feel less than clean. Maintenance and management have noticeably declined. It's frustratingly hard to get in touch with someone when you need assistance. In short, you're paying for the location and ocean access, but the interiors and upkeep need serious attention. With some investment in updates and better guest service, it could return to being a top-tier beach property.

First and foremost, the Kitty Hawk Pier made planning our wedding from a state away incredibly easy. Every single coordinator we worked with was friendly, accommodating, and genuinely invested in making our day special. Emma, especially, answered what was probably 2,839,028,392 emails from me and my million questions with patience, professionalism, and kindness every single time. From the very beginning, the entire team made us feel like our wedding was special and unique--not like they simply do this every weekend. The level of attention, care, and personal service they provided to make our wedding perfect was truly incredible and so appreciated. The food was AMAZING! We had several food allergies among our guests, including me--the bride--being allergic to gluten. The team went above and beyond to make sure everyone could eat safely while still enjoying an incredible meal. We had the mahi and beef, and our guests could not stop talking about how delicious everything was. We were also so impressed by how quickly and efficiently everyone was served. Every single employee we encountered was incredibly helpful, kind, and attentive. From the bartenders and servers to the managers, everyone went out of their way to make sure we and our guests had the best possible experience--and we truly did. Having the hotel right on site was an absolute dream. The hotel staff were incredibly accommodating, and our guests were very happy with their rooms, the restaurant, and the pool and beach access. The gym even had Peloton bikes! The entire setup made the weekend so convenient and enjoyable for everyone. I truly cannot stress enough what a dream venue this is for anyone who wants to get married at the beach. Being able to have all of our guests check in and be done traveling, have the most beautiful beach ceremony, and then immediately move inside to air conditioning while still enjoying the incredible views over the water was absolutely perfect. Having access to the pier for photos was also such a special bonus and gave us so many beautiful memories and pictures. The Kitty Hawk Pier truly gave us the beach wedding of our dreams. From the planning process to the food, staff, accommodations, location, and every little detail in between, everything was exceptional. We will be forever grateful to the entire team for helping us create the most perfect wedding weekend and would wholeheartedly recommend the Kitty Hawk Pier to anyone looking for a beautiful, stress-free, and truly unforgettable wedding venue!

It was beautiful and very relaxing. Both the indoor and outdoor pools were warm, which we really enjoyed. The only downside was that there were hardly any towels available at the outdoor pool. We booked the last available room for the day and were pleasantly surprised with complimentary breakfast vouchers. Unfortunately, after using the vouchers, I checked my account the next day and noticed I had still been charged for breakfast, which was disappointing. The room itself was comfortable. The pillows were soft, the blankets were warm, and we slept well. However, there was one large bug flying around the room, and I have no idea where it came from, which was definitely unpleasant. Overall, we enjoyed our stay because of the pools, beach view, and comfortable room, but a few issues--especially the breakfast charge and the bug in the room--kept it from being a perfect experience.
