    Patty melt cooked medium rare

The location of this gem is a little weird but once you know how to get there, you'll be glad you found it. You'll want to park in the parking lot where their sign is but then you go inside what looks like used to be an old mall and follow the hallway around to the back. I ordered a Wisconsin cheeseburger with fries and Hubby ordered a patty melt with onion rings. When I brought the burger to my mouth, all I could smell was the flame grilled scent and it was delicious. Once I tasted it, I was in heaven. The burger was juicy and cooked exactly how I ordered it (medium well). The top bun was a little thick but it was buttery and toasted. There were two leaves of lettuce, two fresh tomato slices and a large slice of purple onion. The fries were frozen but the type that have a slight batter on the exterior to give it the perfect texture. Hubby ordered his patty melt medium rare and as you can tell by the photos, they know how to do that. It was on marble rye bread that was toasted perfectly. It had chips with it but he also ordered onion rings. The onion rings were thick and had a crispy beer batter. Service was quick and attentive. There were lots of people there for 11:15 in the morning on a Friday. We will definitely return!

It's a little weird to find. The sign you see from the highway is actually over a fitness center. But if you go into the 'mall' and walk all the way through, you bump into the restaurant. It's worth the minor adventure. The food was great and there was plenty of it. Served on hot plates. We had breakfast, although lunch was also offered. Our waitress, didn't get her name, was polite and good...but overworked. That makes it difficult to properly evaluate. She did have the best smile of all the other waitresses. There was a bit of a delay in getting our food...might be normal for early afternoon on a Sunday. It wasn't horrible, but if you have young children, it might be tricky.

They don't bring chips and salsa unless your dish comes with them. Thankfully, my dish did. Chips are served warm. They only needed a little salt. Not homemade but good. The salsa was very finely prepared with NO chunks. It has a little spice on the backend. Hubby ordered a quesadilla (large) and fries. Only the large quesadilla comes with a potato side. He chose fajita beef. I ordered the three tostadas meal with rice and beans. I chose one of each: steak, chicken, and ground beef. Our food came very fast! Hubby's quesadilla was quite cheesy as you can tell by the picture of the cheese pull. Very basic flavor though, nothing special about the steak. Fries were a frozen "meatier" French fry. My tostadas were crispy and fresh with cool veggies on top of the meat and beans. Nice big slices of avocado under the Parmesan cheese. The ground beef was my favorite of the three flavors. Rice and beans were run of the mill. Our server was very kind and attentive. We told her that it was our first time and she offered suggestions and gave us plenty of time to peruse the menu. For an early Friday evening (Black Friday), there were a handful of tables of patrons. It seemed clean and nicely decorated. Not sure that we'd return for their Mexican food but they serve other ethnicities of food and also serve breakfast all day.

Waupaca, WI. I have to disclose I avoided Simpsons for…read moreyears because I would look in the door on Main Street and it looked like a typical bar/supper club. Last year I noticed the outside patio seating and was a little more interested, but the supper club vibe still turned me off. This year we were kind of desperate in a hungry way and decided to try it. I was surprised at how big the place is and we were led beyond the bar to one of the dining areas. Sure the ambiance still shouts out "Supper Club"! This can be avoided by simply sitting outside on the patio if the weather permits. We tried both inside and the patio. Our indoor seats were all the way in the back so we were not affected by the close seating arrangement. I liked the somewhat more privacy this location provided. The patio dining is great, just enough chill in the evening air to keep the flies and mosquitos away. The service here is pretty awesome. Both of our servers on both nights were helpful and friendly. And I mean friendly in a genuine way, just like you are immersed in a small town diner where everyone knows everyone. Thanks to Teresa and Amy for your cheerful welcoming character, and your suggestions about the menu. Even the hostesses, who typically are very bored young women, were outgoing and friendly. Now to the reason we are here: the food. The first night I was near astonished by the quality of the food and the talent of the chef. Do they call him chef? Or does this person refer to themself as a "Cook"? This is Waupaca, Wi. A small town in the Midwest where there are no airs or strutting about the kitchen? Regardless of the semantics this person is a highly talented professional. A quick note about the portion size, as that is important to me: Very Large. In some cases huge. The food is so good it is difficult to save room for dessert. The menu is extensive, ranging from seafood to quality steaks and chops, (I really want to try a hamburger, but that decision was overruled by their specials) on both nights I went for the specials. One night it was swordfish tacos. I was expecting the usual small taco experience but out comes two giant sized and fully stuffed tacos that were filled with perfectly cooked fish, avocado, tomatoes and other good stuff. The heat level was perfect, the capsaicin levels were high enough to get my attention. Unusual for a Wisconsin restaurant to be brave and insistent enough to serve this . Very well done! The other special I tried was the prime rib, which covered my entire plate, and I ordered the small size! They slow cook their prime rib which is how I like it. It was tender, juicy and delicious with real shredded horseradish on the side. Here are some other highlights we tried: The meatball appetizer. These are served in a hot frying pan. There are four of them each nearly the size of a tennis ball and they are amazing. Wow! Caprese salad. A beautifully presented sequence of tomato and cheese slices with a wonderful dressing. I'm not sure, but the tomatoes tasted like homegrown heirlooms. Filet Mignon with Parmesan crust. OMG. The taste of this beef is extraordinary . I suspect they have an excellent source for their meats. The crust on the meat was a delicious touch, Potato skins. Excellent skins, and a lot of them, served with a great fresh ground garlic paste on the side. This garlic makes an appearance also at the beginning of the meal, served with the bread. It goes well with everything. Apple pie for dessert. Less than stellar, and disappointing when compared to all the other servings of the evening. I was expecting a flakey light crust because everything else was so spot on. Instead, said crust was dense, doughy, and saturated with the starchy pie mix. The syrup topping does not work either, it brings forth an overly sugared concoction. The apples did taste firm and fresh. I just could not deduct a star because of this pie though, I was too pleased about the rest of the meal,

Sure you can enjoy a drink at the bar before dinner but that's about where the supper club experience ends. Take a look at the online menu before visiting because the prices are crazy. I think scallops and a small steak were in the $75+ range. The staff was friendly and attentive but unfortunately it didn't make up for this not being a traditional Wisconsin supper club experience. Where's the salad bar?? We both had the Haddock special that was $23 a plate. The fish was watery beneath the breading, no thanks. My salad and the rolls were quite nice. We both agreed we won't be coming again as there are much better places in the area for fish.

There is some special food to be had in this part of Wisconsin, I am a huge fan of the Green Fountain Inn and the Secret Garden just a few blocks away, and now Sulten Belly. We were greeted as we entered and given some clarity of the process so there was no confusion. I liked that we found a seat and took our time with the menu before I went to the ordering station, ordered, paid, and received a number for the table. I'm not exactly pleased with the modern method of tipping before you even see the food, but I paid cash so I could add more to the tip jar if deserved. Oh yeah, if you pay by card they tack on 4%. Bring your cash, they discourage cards. Where I live (Laguna Beach, CA) , some restaurants are the other way. They are not accepting cash and only take alternate card or digital payments. I ordered Mr. Beefy, a delicious smoked beef tenderloin panini sandwich with melted provolone cheese that really hit the spot. The beef tasted like it had been braised in wine, just wonderful for $16.50. Also excellent was the Sulten Belly Favorite Salad that was with assorted fresh greens and bacon, $13.50. The staff here were all friendly and helpful. It was a nice cozy vibe without the bright lights. I will be back. They also have premade frozen dishes available that look pretty good.

While I can't confidently say this is the best joint in Wisconsin, it certainly has to be up there insofar as central Wisconsin establishments. The lasagna, being so meaty, hearty and flavorful you'd swear it came from an authentic Italian hole-in-the-wall. The pulled pork (drenched in their bbq sauce) just shines as bright as any respectful bbq place. The barbecue pastrami sandwich (go figure), was pretty insane, too. No, I haven't been to every supper club or obscure restaurant in Central Wisconsin. But having frequented "up north Wisconsin" (family owns a lake house up there) since I was 5 years old, not once could I remember a place that I felt had better food. Whenever I make the trek up from Illinois, I always stop in, as well as grab one of their frozen lasagnas or bbq chili bowls to go. That's saying something.

We had the bruschetta for an appetizer and I know they claim a Guinness reduction is drizzled over it but all we could taste was balsamic vinegar and it really ruined the otherwise quality ingredients. For entrees we had the shepherd's pie and 14 oz ribeye. The shepherd's pie was as good as we'd hoped it would be. The ribeye was cooked medium rare as requested; it just didn't offer anything memorable, and I'm talking seasoning, or being able to top it with a sauce, compound butter, sautéed mushrooms, etc. Why not offer those?!?!? Strangely, I enjoyed the sautéed vegetables almost as much as the steak, as they had color and flavor compared to most other places that seem to boil or microwave the veg and toss it on the plate. The owner stopped by to check on us, and the personal touch was refreshing. We absolutely loved the live music from a local Irish band and stayed the entirety of their show. I am not a fan of Simpsons so Doc Kelly's it is. It was a nice warm room and very inviting. The hostess led us to a nice table and our very friendly server arrived soon. This used to be the home of T Dubs that had the nations best hamburger. So I thought maybe I'll try Doc Kelly's version. I did this absolutely knowing I wasn't going to get a burger like T Dubs, after all that is now ancient history. So I'm not going to compare the burgers, I'll just tell you what I got: The burger was larger than the average you might expect, with a decent bun. The patty extended beyond the bun all the way around and was about 3/4 of an inch thick. It was a bit more rare than the medium I ordered but it actually became a bit more cooked during the time it left the grill. The meat had a flavor like it had been cooked over wood, it was very tasty. The $3 slice of cheese was not noticeable at all. As good as the burger was, it fell short of a $21 burger. I probably won't order it again just because of that. Also, if they could simply put lettuce on the bottom bun, the juices won't turn the bun to mush. Oh well. The roasted potato's that accompanied the burger were perfect. The Duck Won Tons were good but not at all excitement inducing. At $14 they are a no go. The Harvest Salad was a winner, it sported fresh greens, a very nice raspberry dressing and real grilled chicken, not those crappy chicken cubes from a bag a lot of restaurants put on their salads. The chicken was grilled perfectly and had a nice flavor. $20 Was the salad price, I know a bit high, it is just a salad after all. The Cran Citrus Spritzer was excellent and quite tall, fairly priced at $6. I had a delicious Irish beer (Smithwick's) for only $6. The Brown Cake with ice cream was a highlight, I loved it, typical pricing at $8 and worth it. The menu is extensive and requires more exploring, I shall be back.
