I realized I broke the rules, but a fellow challenger told me about the most extreme steaks even the internet couldn't come up with that goes by the bone as weights are approximate. A few years later I just happen to be in the area and thought I'd redeem myself by eating what I find to be a superior cut (Prime Rib). I was surprised at the lack of prize as it's a t shirt for 116 oz or 3 bones which is what feeds a family of 4 easily. No way i'm trying the 4 bone 10lb monster. Again I failed, but not because I tried, but because I wanted to enjoy my aged 72 oz. Huge menu for a restaurant, great options and fantastic sides. Best prime rib like 10+ years running. A long forgetten salad bar reminds me of Souplantation, but better (think Japanese Sizzler and if you didn't know it's way more elevated in Japan, so a huge compliment). Perfectly breaded appetizers. The mixed basket for the table is great, but the tavern mix is a perfect meal in an of itself. They have 9 different potato options, you'd think this was Idaho. The parm wedges remidned me of the OG Oscars in Socal, only missing hashbrowns. An extensive seafood selection that is fresh, despite being so far from water. They have half orders, kids menu that are pretty elevated. Lobster and scallops, 6 different shrimp offerings. They even offer a pate dish. Service is great, very friendly, family friendly, but not over run with kids. Decor is cool, not trendy or classic. It's inviting, but luxurious. Modern, owner designed and not by some firm. I'm guessing they were 1st time restauranteurs that actually made it. Everything comes out pretty quick which is a testament to their systems. Drinks are midwest fancy, dessert ish, but fun. Drafts are flowing. Lots of wood and comfortable but dark decor. Prices are affordable and their menu is vast. The prime rib has a nice crust, the meat is tender, but not aged. Beefy and well rendered. The jus is warm and deep, really warms up the latter stages of your 3 bone meal if you dare, ask for more half way thru. The 1st bone was easy peasy, very little chewing. the 2nd was still tasty, the 3rd things were cooling and I needed the jus. I finished it, cleaned the bones and took my shirt as I rode off into the sunset to take a 3 hour nap. I literally ubered back to the hotel as I couldn't drive comfortably. I paid cash to get the discount eventhough the prices are reasonable. No reservations, but they do accept larer parties, just call ahead and if your doing the 72 or 160 oz ribs you should call ahead. I was warned about this. I have no idea what the name Black Otter means, but Wisconsin is doing somethings right that Texas never could with these offerings. it's not just like eating/ordering a whole rib roast, people around here seem to eat 2 bones no problem.

There was space at the bar where the six of us could easily get a drink and begin our evening. The server found us quickly and took our order. Once seated, everyone headed to the well stocked salad bar. The out of towners in our group were impressed by the selections. I ordered the ribeye and requested blue cheese topping, others had steaks, and the ribs. It wasn't until my Daughter in Law commented that the steak tasted fishy, that I identified what was making my ribeye seasoning also taste odd. This suspicion was confirmed when we arrived back at home. My son, who is allergic to shellfish, started breaking out in hives. I can only assume that steaks were brushed with butter that was contaminated by the lobster tails. I plan to follow up with a phone call as this could have ended up with an ambulance ride or worse.

Waupaca, WI. I have to disclose I avoided Simpsons for…read moreyears because I would look in the door on Main Street and it looked like a typical bar/supper club. Last year I noticed the outside patio seating and was a little more interested, but the supper club vibe still turned me off. This year we were kind of desperate in a hungry way and decided to try it. I was surprised at how big the place is and we were led beyond the bar to one of the dining areas. Sure the ambiance still shouts out "Supper Club"! This can be avoided by simply sitting outside on the patio if the weather permits. We tried both inside and the patio. Our indoor seats were all the way in the back so we were not affected by the close seating arrangement. I liked the somewhat more privacy this location provided. The patio dining is great, just enough chill in the evening air to keep the flies and mosquitos away. The service here is pretty awesome. Both of our servers on both nights were helpful and friendly. And I mean friendly in a genuine way, just like you are immersed in a small town diner where everyone knows everyone. Thanks to Teresa and Amy for your cheerful welcoming character, and your suggestions about the menu. Even the hostesses, who typically are very bored young women, were outgoing and friendly. Now to the reason we are here: the food. The first night I was near astonished by the quality of the food and the talent of the chef. Do they call him chef? Or does this person refer to themself as a "Cook"? This is Waupaca, Wi. A small town in the Midwest where there are no airs or strutting about the kitchen? Regardless of the semantics this person is a highly talented professional. A quick note about the portion size, as that is important to me: Very Large. In some cases huge. The food is so good it is difficult to save room for dessert. The menu is extensive, ranging from seafood to quality steaks and chops, (I really want to try a hamburger, but that decision was overruled by their specials) on both nights I went for the specials. One night it was swordfish tacos. I was expecting the usual small taco experience but out comes two giant sized and fully stuffed tacos that were filled with perfectly cooked fish, avocado, tomatoes and other good stuff. The heat level was perfect, the capsaicin levels were high enough to get my attention. Unusual for a Wisconsin restaurant to be brave and insistent enough to serve this . Very well done! The other special I tried was the prime rib, which covered my entire plate, and I ordered the small size! They slow cook their prime rib which is how I like it. It was tender, juicy and delicious with real shredded horseradish on the side. Here are some other highlights we tried: The meatball appetizer. These are served in a hot frying pan. There are four of them each nearly the size of a tennis ball and they are amazing. Wow! Caprese salad. A beautifully presented sequence of tomato and cheese slices with a wonderful dressing. I'm not sure, but the tomatoes tasted like homegrown heirlooms. Filet Mignon with Parmesan crust. OMG. The taste of this beef is extraordinary . I suspect they have an excellent source for their meats. The crust on the meat was a delicious touch, Potato skins. Excellent skins, and a lot of them, served with a great fresh ground garlic paste on the side. This garlic makes an appearance also at the beginning of the meal, served with the bread. It goes well with everything. Apple pie for dessert. Less than stellar, and disappointing when compared to all the other servings of the evening. I was expecting a flakey light crust because everything else was so spot on. Instead, said crust was dense, doughy, and saturated with the starchy pie mix. The syrup topping does not work either, it brings forth an overly sugared concoction. The apples did taste firm and fresh. I just could not deduct a star because of this pie though, I was too pleased about the rest of the meal,

So I had high hopes for this place to be a true supper club but to be honest it's not. Sure you can enjoy a drink at the bar before dinner but that's about where the supper club experience ends. Take a look at the online menu before visiting because the prices are crazy. I think scallops and a small steak were in the $75+ range. The staff was friendly and attentive but unfortunately it didn't make up for this not being a traditional Wisconsin supper club experience. Where's the salad bar?? We both had the Haddock special that was $23 a plate. The fish was watery beneath the breading, no thanks. My salad and the rolls were quite nice. We both agreed we won't be coming again as there are much better places in the area for fish.

Get there early or you'll end up waiting. Don't drink? Too bad; if you don't get there early, you'll wait. Salad bar (which I love), not here. Muddled old fashioned, not here. Cozy atmosphere and solid customer service, definitely in the right place. We arrived with a veteran couple. They got us there early, understood the ordering routine and found us a place to sit. We ordered appetizers and drinks. Definitely get the onion rings as they are incredible! Drinks were solidly poured and reasonably priced. We ordered and were surprised by how quickly we were seated. The vegetable tray and bread basket were good. Our meals came out shortly after we were seated. The salads were nice sized and the blue cheese dressing with crumbles was great. Our entrees (ribeye, tenderloin with chicken, prime rib and fish) were all sized nicely and prepared as ordered. My dining partner said the chicken was some of their all-time favorite. My ribeye was seasoned well and cooked perfectly. Our dining partners loved their choices. Overall, I'd really like to give 4.5 stars, but my pals at Yelp still don't trust half stars. We all enjoyed our experience and will definitely put this on our list of supper clubs to return to!
