    Doc Kelly's Public House - Shepherd's pie

We had the bruschetta for an appetizer and I know they claim a Guinness reduction is drizzled over it but all we could taste was balsamic vinegar and it really ruined the otherwise quality ingredients. For entrees we had the shepherd's pie and 14 oz ribeye. The shepherd's pie was as good as we'd hoped it would be. The ribeye was cooked medium rare as requested; it just didn't offer anything memorable, and I'm talking seasoning, or being able to top it with a sauce, compound butter, sautéed mushrooms, etc. Why not offer those?!?!? Strangely, I enjoyed the sautéed vegetables almost as much as the steak, as they had color and flavor compared to most other places that seem to boil or microwave the veg and toss it on the plate. The owner stopped by to check on us, and the personal touch was refreshing. We absolutely loved the live music from a local Irish band and stayed the entirety of their show. It was certainly a fun night even if the food did have a few hiccups.

We were very disappointed with our experience at Doc Kelly's Public House…read more When our group of six arrived, we were told the wait would be about 30 minutes. The hostess told us we could wait outside in the rain because the bar was full and there wasn't even standing room inside. We understood and were willing to wait. After waiting in the rain for over 50 minutes, we watched at least 23 people leave the restaurant. We went back inside to check on our table, and the hostess seemed surprised to see us. That's when we realized our name hadn't even been put on the waiting list. After finally adding us, we were told it would be another 30 minutes. About 45 minutes later, we were finally seated. By then, we were soaked from the rain and were seated directly under two air-conditioning vents that blew cold air on us throughout the entire meal. Service didn't improve once we were seated. It took a while just to get water, and of the six glasses, five were full while one was only half full. It took roughly 40 minutes for someone to take our order and another 40 minutes for our food to arrive. The food was equally disappointing. Three of us ordered the fish fry and received what looked like three small frozen fish pieces sitting on top of pub chips that had become soggy underneath. Most of the fish was eaten by the time the waitress arrived with our tarter sauce. They were also out of coleslaw. Another person ordered the tortellini, which arrived cold and was missing the sides that were supposed to come with the meal. And a cold cup of soup. We also planned on ordering the Pizookie for dessert, but they were sold out of that as well. Throughout the meal, no one checked on our table or offered drink refills despite the long wait. Overall, the experience missed the mark at every level from the wait list and customer service to the food quality and hospitality. Our group camps nearby and always enjoys trying local restaurants. Unfortunately, this was not a place we'll return to or recommend to others.

My husband and I are on a mission this summer, searching for the best Friday Fish Fry near us…read more After 10 Friday meals, Cattails is leading the way. The place is newer and very comfortable with a great bar, if you need to wait a bit for your table. We waited only 10 minutes and we did not mind. At all. A cut WAY above the rest are the Classic Old Fashioneds, served the way they should be -- heavy on your choice of bourbon and very light on the soda. (Definitely NOT Wisconsin Style.) I had a smoked Old Fashioned that was one of the best I've ever had! But the meal got better! A salad bar is not a requirement for a fish fry, but it sure goes a long way. Fresh, tasty, and a great way to start the meal. We both ordered the perch. I had a baked potato side and he had the fries. Best perch we've had -- light on breading, hot and not oily at all. Service was excellent and we decided to have a second Old Fashioned back in the bar for dessert. We'll be back!

You can't get that every where. That's why we love this place, the staff and owners are so friendly, a great hometown feel. Also they make great muddled old fashions and if you want something different try a smoked old fashion. You go to Cattails once I know your going go back.

As we were walking to our table, the smell of customers plates came at us and it caused my stomach to grumble and my mouth to water as I anticipated what was to come. I ordered the braised pork poutine as I've never met a bad potato. I was NOT disappointed. The fries were crispy on the outside and soft on the inside. The braised pork and gravy was lip-smacking, finger-licking good. I only wished I had a larger stomach so I could've eaten more. Hubby ordered fish fry and substituted his fries for rings. Both were fried perfectly. Slaw was more savory than sweet. Where the service was sorely lacking was with server communication. She checked on us frequently but every time we said thank you, she didn't respond. How difficult is it to say "you're welcome" or "my pleasure"? Maybe we're both just used to Texans where everyone is over-the-top kind. I worked in F&B for almost 10 years...you always acknowledge your customers, good or bad. We'll definitely return but how nice it would be to be acknowledged next time. After all, we're giving you our hard-earned money for not only food but also a pleasant experience.

The atmosphere is very warm and inviting with seating inside and out, and my server was outstanding. Unfortunately the good stops there as the food was disappointing. Several pork dishes on the menu didn't interest me so at the suggestion of my server I opted for the bourbon burger with fry's. The burger stated that it would be prepared medium well which is how I would have ordered it however it was nothing short of well done. I understand getting a char finish but this was beyond that and very dry. Luckily the bourbon sauce gave it back some flavor. The fry's were left in the oil a little to long as well and then heavily salted. On top of the disappointing food I was informed when I was paying the check that they would be adding a 4% surcharge for using a credit card to pay with. I travel during the week for work so I eat out several times a week and I have never been charged an up charge for paying by credit card.
