The fricken gophers would be in heaven. The chips and salsa are no slouch either. You get plenty of chips and four different salsas to tempt you. Careful though, the green one has a kick. When asked what kind of sauce I'd like on the rellenos, I told the server, NOT THE GREEN ONE! She laughed and said that they have a mild version. I opted for that. The experience was so good, we went back again on Sunday--our last night in town. That says everything. On Thursday, we had the salmon--exceptional, perfectly prepared, flavorful, and beautifully plated. On Sunday, we tried their steak and shrimp, which was equally outstanding. Both nights, the food was superb. But here's what really impressed me: I tried the beer tasting flight for the first time, and I actually liked every single beer. That's never happened to me before. Whoever curates their selection knows what they're doing. Our server, Gabe, was excellent -- attentive, knowledgeable, and genuinely friendly. He made both visits feel special. First, the food. Decent. I mean, it wasn't great, but it was good. We'd go again sometime, if not for the prices. We each got enchiladas. Their enchiladas come standard with (cotija?) cheese. We had to order them special to get them with meat. Cost of 3, small (4-5") rolled enchiladas with 4 Tbs of rice and of beans? Over $12.50. Cost to add meat, another $3.50 (most places will charge you $1-$2.50 for the meat). The red sauce was a deep dark tint (not mole, but like toasted dried chiles, almost black), and there wasn't much of it. There wasn't much cheese on our enchiladas, I mean, I could count the strands of shredded cheese (like less than ten each). But there was a generous portion of meat. The beans were ok, the rice had clumps of hard crunchy old uncooked rice in it. The chips were good and seemed housemade. The salsa was really good, if not a bit too sweet, but I'm not complaining. As mentioned, it's worth going again, but for the steep prices, this was NOT a 4 star restaurant.... Cost of glass of iced soda or tea, over $3. I mean, tea, literally costs about 5 cents per glass. A relleno, plain, no toppings, on the side, $5.50. Overall, with tip it cost us over $50 for two, for a mediocre lunch in an out of the way, hole in the wall place that's barely better than an average food truck. Today I ordered their TACO ALAMBRE STYLE meal with a side chile relleno. The service and food preparation was quick and very pleasant. The chips were good (rate them a "B.") The red salsa was tomato based with onion, chile, and cilantro. It was not high level (rate it a "C.") The white salsa was a bit better and had tiny pieces of chile in it. (rate it a "B-.) The chile relleno was not bathed and was a bit soft. The flavor was a little weak. This was still not a great version of a New Mex chile relleno. Rate it a "C." The main meal itself came with a little tray featuring four lime wedges and two salsas...both of which were tasty and interesting. The meal was accompanied by four warmed tortillas wrapped in foil. As my meat I selected pork al pastor. It was grilled with red and green bell peppers, onions, and a couple sliced mushrooms, but I did not notice any bacon (which is traditional) which would have made the dish more flavorful. The meal was covered with melted cheese. The dish as a whole was well prepared and quite flavorful. I usually do not order tacos as I feel you never get a good filling of meat in them as opposed to burritos, but these alambre style tacos had enough filling to fill up six or eight tacos!!! All in all, I was very pleased with my dining experience at El Charro and I have revised my dining experience rating to FOUR AND A QUARTER STARS....meaning it is somewhere between very good and excellent.
