Since this was our first visit, the wifey and I shared a takeout order of Nasi Kuning Komplit; the chicken, beef tending, tofu, Tempe w/rice and veggies was fantastic. Be careful of the fried hard boiled egg w/Sambal - that Sambal is legit!! I've never had Perkedel and the corned beef was pretty tasty. I'm from the Bay Area where Indonesian food is rare. We've had Medan Kitchen before so we decided to give this place a try. On this trip, we ordered takeout but sat down for dessert. We came on a Saturday evening and there was no wait with just a couple tables with adventurous "bule" (caucasians) getting ready for their delicious meals. The es cendol is unique here in that they don't use the traditional green jelly but what looks like a homemade blue colored jelly. The palm sugar mixed with the shaved ice is very refreshing. I think it's more upscale than Medan kitchen but not by much. Medan Kitchen is a very casual place with more food options. For the food, we ordered nasi bungkus (combination rice goodness), nasi bebek (fried duck and rice), and mie tek tek (traditional fried noodles). My favorite is the nasi bungkus because it has a little bit of everything. They give a side of gudek (jackfruit curry) with the rice, fried chicken, beef empal (fried sliced beef) and spicy sambal. Although menu here is limited, I think they focus on a few good dishes. The duck seems deep fried. It comes with green sambal that compliments it well. My daughter liked it but I'd probably pass on the duck next time as it's a bit gamey for me. read more

I went to Bali a few years ago and feel in love with the flavors and joy behind Indonesian food. I haven't found a spot in LA that captured that spirit, but Wayang delivered! It is a take-out restaurant. The owner is a superstar, she runs the restaurant on her own from taking the orders, making all the food, and sharing her amazing home-style cooking. So hot tip would be order in advance over the phone to give her time to prep your food and eat there! I ordered two dishes nasi kuning complicit (basically a sampler of all the proteins with the most delicious rice, sambal and potato fritter), mie goreng (noodles) and Indonesian tea. Authentic delicious Indonesian food, what else is there to say! This restaurant is pretty short staff, I think there was just the waitress and one chef in the back. Expect some wait times because of the lack of staff and they make all the food fresh. Besides that, the food is bomb, I tried out these items. Nasi Bungkus - Tons of rice but everything was so good. Perfectly season and the meats were all very tender. Just a solid dish. (5/5) Nasi Kuning Komplit - The yellow rice was so good. Really good dish with many different items that are all good. You can't go wrong with this dish. (5/5) Service here is easily probably a 3/5 since they are short staffed but food is a 5/5. Support your local restaurants and this place is worth trying if you're open to a longer wait. It wasn't too crowded when I came on Saturday which was great. They do accept credit cards now but they have a 3% added fee. Bring cash/zelle to avoid the extra fees. This was honestly one of the worst customer service experiences I've ever had. I called to place an order and the woman who answered was completely rude and arrogant. I accidentally said the wrong item at first, and instead of helping me fix it, she snapped that she was busy, told me to check the menu myself, and then hung up the phone on me. I tried ordering online instead, but the website said to call to confirm payment. I called back, and the same person answered again with an angry tone. I still tried to stay polite and asked if she could check whether my order went through. She said she'd "answer later" like she was about to hang up again. When I asked how I was supposed to know if my order went through, she actually said she didnt care shes just busy, completely ignoring my request. She called me back later and said my order didn't go through even though the website said it did. When I told her I was disappointed, she just said, "Yeah, I'm busy today," with zero apology or care. This is absolutely unacceptable. If you can't treat customers with basic respect, you shouldn't be answering the phone. I will never order from here again. Update: 1 day later I originally left a review because of how rude and dismissive the person on the phone was when I tried to place and confirm my order. But now I am even more shocked because after this review, the same person texted me personally and brought up religion, telling me that "Lord Jesus should forgive me for my selfishness." This is completely unprofessional, offensive, and unacceptable for a business. A customer has the right to share an honest experience. If someone cannot handle basic customer service or respect boundaries, they should not be running a business or communicating with customers at all. If she is too busy to take orders or treat people kindly, then she should close temporarily instead of taking it out on customers. Do not blame customers for your bad attitude. Wayang is a true hidden gem in Alhambra! I have always wanted to try this place when it was previously Wong Java and finally got a chance this past Wednesday. No other customers were there when we arrived, so we had the whole place to ourselves. There was just one lady working the front (and I think she also cooked our food as well), and she was very nice and took our orders. We ordered nasi kuning komplit, lab satay, and mie goreng. For the month of September, they were doing free lemonade and 15% off, as well as free soup on weekends--check on their Instagram or website for the current deal of the month. The inside of the restaurant is very cute and homey--they have lots of photos on some of the walls and a TV playing Indonesian karaoke. Our food arrived 15 minutes after we ordered because they had to cook it, and everything was super delicious and came out nice and hot. The mie goreng had delicious wok hei/smoky aroma because the noodles were charred perfectly. The lamb satay had a delicious sweet and tangy sauce and was served with lontong (pieces of compressed rice cakes) to dip in the sauce. The nasi kuning komplit had delicious tumeric rice, beef rendang, spicy sambal on a fried egg, fried chicken (which was a little dry), a potato ball, fried tofu, and cucumbers. My husband and sister-in-law were in love with the lamb satay and mie goreng (they said they could each eat a whole plate by themselves), so we will definitely be back for more (and to try their other food)! read more

Our school is close by so we usually come by here for lunch when we get the chance. This is a pretty small restaurant with good flavors especially if you love spicy and savory. Parking: street parking, I haven't encountered a lack of parking space whenever I came by. Staff is polite and friendly. There may be times your food might take longer than expected and they do mention it by the wall at the counter. Food: I've tried their beef rendang before and that was one of my favorites, and the soup they usually serve as complimentary when you dine in. Today's visit, they didn't have both and I was a bit sad. I did get other dishes and all of them were also really good and tasty. We had the Mie Goreng Udang, Nasi Goreng Beef and Nasi Bangkus. Mie Goreng with shrimp: good dish to share. Even if you have a rice dish I think this is a great addition. Light and smokey flavor with hint of soy sauce and spices. Nasi Goreng beef: this fried rice is really good. One of our go to, this has good amount of beef slices and the flavor is just right! This goes really well with beef rendang and sambal, also add a splash of their sweet soy sauce and it's BOMB. Nasi Bangkus: first time having this dish. There are sweet, savory and very spicy flavors in this. Their greenish/dark brown sambal is VERY SPICY, for me. The red one is the one I can tolerate. The dish had chicken, beef, tofu, egg and jackfruit. A plateful of protein and carbs! I really think this is a good meal to have if you want to try lots of different dishes for the price of one. Holy, everyone is seriously sleeping on this place. Everything we ordered was so delicious and expertly cooked. The wait for food is a bit long because they are severely understaffed, I believe 1 waiter that also goes to help the 1 chef in the back. Everyone here is so nice and the food really exceeds expectations. I think the most notable thing was how they fry their protein. Nothing battered too much or overcooked. They've somehow gotten the skin to be crispy and flavorful, while still maintaining the flavor of the marinated protein and it's piping hot and not dry in the slightest, unless it's the jerky and even that was super yummy. All the sauces provided with the meal were so packed with flavor but the spice level is intense, but not the type where you want to stop eating. The prices may seem high but trust me, the portions make sense. I got the plate that has a variety of proteins and sauces and it was too much for 1 person, heck even 2 people would walk away stuffed from this. I happen to have a partner who just loves Indonesian food so we had to try Wayang in our neighborhood. It was a chill night so we ordered take out and phoned our order. The person on the phone was very friendly and sweet to answer all of our questions. I actually wanted to try the fried whole fish with chili sauce but they didn't have fish that day. We opted for Mie Goreng, Nasi Kuning Komplit, and Chicken Satay to take home and enjoy. The Nasi Kuning Komplit includes yellow rice, fried chicken, beef randang, potato fritter, fried tofu, egg, and spicy sauce. The ingredients in the spicy sauce make the whole dish. We saw ourselves wanting to dip everything in this spicy sauce. It was amazing! The Mie Goreng was so much more tasty than the Miegoreng noodles you can purchase in little baggies at the grocery store. Eating Mie Goreng from an authentic Indonesian restaurant definitely topped it off for me - I can't go back to packaged Mie goreng anymore sorry! We were craving Indonesian food last night and decided to try this restaurant in Alhambra. It was later in the evening so it was empty inside. We were told by our server that it was much busier during lunch. Undeterred, we entered the dining room looking forward to our dinner. The menu has a broad range of choices. We went with the nasi bungkus and the ayam kremes. They ran a couple of specials which we took advantage of, including the tasty and free soup. The food was flavorful and spicy. We also ordered an es teler, which really helped calm down the spice. I will note that the fried chicken in the ayam kremes was a bit dry to our liking. Otherwise, everything was fine. Note that they add 3% if use credit card, but do offer Zelle for those of us who don't want to pay that additional fee. All the ordering is done online even if you wish to dine in. It was nice that they had photos which allowed me to choose some new items I was not familiar with. We made our choices and my one word description of the food here at Wayang is AUTHENTIC. With great flavors brought great taste. The Nasi Goreng (fried rice) is not super oily unlike your usual Chinese restaurant. We tried two styles of noodles which were the Mie Goreng and Kwetiau Goreng Sapi which is very similar to a chow fun with beef. Walking in I knew this place was already one of those hidden gems with a homemade feel. There was only one other table at the restaurant while we were there, but it was probably because of a slow Sunday night. Note that this place does close pretty early on evenings around 7pm. My family and I opted in ordering: 1. Gado Gado (7/10) 2. Chicken Satay (9/10) 3. Ayam Rempah (9.5/10) 4. Kwetiau Goreng Ayam (8.5/10) Gado Gado came out first. I never had this dish before but it was alright, had some sort of chip, sauce, and veggies. It has bit of a kick but nothing real spicy. I found that the chip was a bit hard to chew, though overall it was an okay dish. Chicken Satay is a banger. Loved the sauce and the rice cakes that came with it. Meat was juicy and tender, and wasn't too chewy. Had the perfect amount of flavoring. Ayam Rempah is my favorite. Ever since I went to malaysia back in the summer, I've been craving this type of fried chicken and rice dish. I was not disappointed eating here. The spices were a perfect blend, the batter and crispiness was leveled with the rice. Everything was just *chefs kiss* Kwetiau was my father's favorite of the night. Overall, you can't really go wrong with this dish. A little kick but not too heavy either. The owner came by the say hi to us at the end of the meal and was super friendly/hospitable. You can tell they're passionate about the food they make and everything is 100% housemade. I visited here many years ago when it was Wong Java House. We did have some language barrier when ordering, especially my husband in particular was looking for the Bihun goreng noodles. Turns out they haven't served it in a long time, however it was still on the menu. We decided to share the chicken mie goreng, fried chicken 6 pcs, and stir fry sauteed water spinach. The fried chicken was very dry, like the desert miss the rain. The sauteed water spinach only had a one chili pepper warning, thinking that it's mild but it was spicy to the death level. The only saving grace was the mie goreng which tastes and looks like what we had at other Indonesian restaurants. I hate to give a low review to a mom/pop restaurant, but perhaps there was a communication issue since there are many good reviews on Yelp. read more

Great place for Indonesian food. It's nothing fancy but has cozy vibe and away from the busy area. Parking is street parking nearby or in front of their restaurant. Currently they're having summer promo (2024) which offers 15% of the entire menu. They're also offering complimentary sweet/sour tamarind (sayur asem) soup and free lemonade. Tried their Nasi Bungkus - rice with egg curry, beef jerky, jackfruit, some chicken - served in the banana leaf. It is on spicy side which I can handle, it's so good and so tasty. The portion is pretty good and you can share - it's good for 2 people. It also comes with 2 different chilli sauce - placed on the side in the same plate. Gado Gado is so good - one of the best. Not skimping on the peanut sauce. It comes also with some chips on top. Pretty good size too for appetizer. Definitely will go back to try more of their dishes and take advantage of their promo while still available. *This place used to be Wong Java and and have change in the ownership. This is my first visit, and I ordered the fried noodles and a fried fritter made from soybean called tempeh mendoan. The tempeh mendoan was fried to crisp. Although the tempeh inside the batter are the soft kind, like how tempeh mendoan normally is, usually tempeh mendoan are meant to get fried half done (before it crisped). Their version is more like just normal crispy fried tempeh. But don't get me wrong, it's tastes amazing! If you love fried fritters, you HAVE to try it. It's crisp, flavorful, made of soybean, such a joy to eat. And moreover, it comes with REAL indonesian chilies. It's not jalapeno, it's not thai chili, it's the fresh and spicy chili. I'll definitely be back for the tempeh alone. There's not much i can write about the friend noodle, except the fact that this the best indonesian fried noodle in LA. Or at least top two! It tastes truly indonesian, not indo-adjacent like other indo places that serve fried noodles that kinda more like pancit or chinese fried noodles.
