I ventured to the Wayback Burger East Windsor location as it was the only one close to my home. I wanted to get the deal of a lifetime on National Cheeseburger Day for $5.00. I was impressed as I wasn't aware it was a drive thru facility. This is the only drive thru that I know of and it's literally right off I91 Exit 45. Across the street from Sofias Italian Restaurant. Let me start by saying that I rate all "chain" restaurants at a typical 4-star maximum, only giving 5 for the truly exceptional locations and may note a 4.5 for really good ones. That being said this Jakes location is run very well, clean, the food is fresh, service is fast and the staff is friendly. The menu is still the same as it's been - mainly burgers but also chicken sandwiches, hot dogs and rings, and now tater tots on the menu with the milkshakes they added years ago. Everything is prepared to order and customizable in any way you like. In that way it reminds me a bit of Five Guys but it's a different set of options and a slightly higher price point in addition to being different burgers and fries. Great place to stop for a quick lunch or pick up something to bring home but eating in the restaurant is a unique experience that sets them a little further apart. The one thing I almost deducted a 1/2 star for was the removal of the "Irish Nachos" side I have always come here for. House made potato chips with chili, cheese, onions and jalapenos, it was something you can't get most everywhere else. Though they added the tots to the menu and you can get most of that stuff on them, it's not the same and unless it's something super-unique I always thought it was weird ordering tater tots at a restaurant. Great food and great service! He just happened to stumble across this place during our weekend travels. Actually located about 500 ft away from the hotel we stayed in. My grandson has unique taste buds and only likes grilled cheese so when I called to find out about whether or not they serve grilled cheese it was definitely on the kids meal. Ordering I decided to get a garden burger. It was absolutely amazing. The food was very very fresh and what impressed me the most was the hot French fries. Usually when I place an order for French fries I have to ask for them to be extra crispy however the french fries served it this restaurant we're very very crispy. The next day I decided to go back because I only eat garden or vegan food and my daughter wanted to experience the French fries. Again we had an amazing experience with this restaurant. We also had an opportunity to go inside and see the cleanliness, the beautiful decor, and the total environment. I must say that next time I'm traveling to Massachusetts I will take a detour and stop at this restaurant. read more

I've been driving by this place forever and finally stopped in. There was a little difficulty to order. The cashier was locked out of the system and didn't have a pin and had to make calls and text people. He was apologetic. We sat down and waited. I don't think it's the kind of place you can go to for a burger in a hurry, just when you have a bit more time. He was very polite but seemed disorganized. Our order had to be taken a second time due to the cash register problem. Our food came out without our drinks. He apologized for forgetting my onions and when he remembered brought them out on his own. I had a regular cheeseburger. It was tasty, not mind blowing. Not greasy. The homemade chips were very good. Had they stayed cooking a tiny bit little longer they would have been burnt but they were tasty. The shake was also tasty. My friend also said her buffalo chicken sandwich and cookie and cream shake were also good. Closing time says 9pm but the staff kindly let us know they'd be closing early last night. The young man was busy cleaning. A mature woman came over and was so nice. She told us to not rush but take our time, with a big genuine smile. She made us feel welcome. I was really disappointed by Wayback Burgers. I ordered a salad and the half of the lettuce was wilted and brown. The food was expensive considering it's a fast food restaurant. And the worst part is that the fries tasted like the frozen ones you get in the supermarket and refrigerate. I went in today with a friend on my lunch break. I order a Caesar salad and my friend orders a burger. Fifteen minutes later they bring her burger and tell me that my salad will be a few more minutes. Then they tell me that they have run out of lettuce. Ok.....so I order tenders and onion rings because at this point, I only have about 20 minutes left on my lunch break. Well, I've eaten here half a dozen times now due to its proximity to where I live and I have to say, it isn't really my top choice for burgers, or really for any convenience food, given the many choices that we have in the area. The burgers at Wayback taste good, they are made to order and are fresh- but for their size they are expensive- more expensive than their local competition (Five Guys, Smashburger, plus a host of inexpensive family chain restaurants) and their quality is definitely not better. While there is usually a fairly long wait for a burger, I would not normally complain about food that is cooked fresh to order. I will, complain, however, that I don't think there has been a single time I have eaten there that some part of my order hasn't been forgotten or wrong. Burgers are brought with the wrong toppings, shakes are forgotten about, It often feels like they are understaffed or lack proper management. These issues are always met with an apology and the situation is promptly fixed, but out of the six times I remember eating here, five times there have been meal mistakes. I think that Wayback Burgers might be able to gain another star from me if they worked toward really improving their quality control and perhaps their staff training. I like supporting smaller businesses over larger chains, and I'd like to give them my business, but not at the expense of my meal being messed up every time I come in. read more

I've been here a couple times and it was nothing overly impressive, the burgers are very good and so are the milkshakes. I stopped in to try the turkey burger and pumpkin milkshake which was a special for the month of November. The menu isn't too extensive. The service was friendly, and the place was clean. The cooks all wore gloves. They did give us the wrong milkshake, but it was quickly fixed without an issue. It's just nothing exciting enough to make me a regular, plus the prices are ridiculous. $21 for two burgers and two milkshakes. C'mon? I noticed two things about Jake's right off the bat: The guys that work there are super friendly, and the place seems inordinately clean for a chain restaurant. So, what he heck... Having learned my lesson at Five Guy's (which seems very similar to Jake's), I ordered a junior hamburger, which was more than enough. A long list of toppings are available, though I stuck to the standards on the inaugural visit. My fiance and I split an order of fries, which were thicker than I typically like, but good. The burgers seemed completely serviceable for a chain. There's nothing fancy about them, but they're not terribly heavy and the ingredients are fresh. Jake's has a substantial milkshake menu, and I believe they offer other similar fare, like hot dogs and grilled cheese. There is also an online ordering system on their website, for those who simply cannot afford to spend four to six minutes waiting in the actual restaurant for their food. read more

I've had just about every burger imaginable in the region. The best I ever had was at Lindy's Bon Appétit near George Washington University in DC. If you're ever down there, give it a try. Back when I ate there in the early 90s they offered over 40 different types of burgers....yes over FORTY. I had the Cordon Bleu Burger. But up here in Western MA, North Central CT, I have to say Jake's Wayback is among the best. The meat was anything but ordinary unless your tastebuds are shot then you're out of luck. And the toppings were fresh and generous. Yesterday was our first time eating at a Jake's. We ordered two Jake's Burgers with everything, with fried onions. One combo with fries, the other with rings. Pros: Love the big thick onion rings. The burgers were fresh, thick, juicy and perfectly prepared on a fresh bun. The fries were thicker, almost like hand-cut and not salted too much as they often are elsewhere. Service at this location was excellent overall. Very friendly and personal (the grill cook delivered the ordered to our table) and the manager was very welcoming. We definitely plan on returning. Five Guys cannot compare. Greasy, overpriced, loud and crowded with only slightly above average food quality. A premium priced McDonald's in my opinion. Dropping nearly $30 for 4 people on average food is not my idea of money well spent. I'll likely never eat at Five Guys again. Cons: I don't know if this Jake's store ordinarily has just two people working per shift or if we visited during a slower period. But the ice had just run out so the machine was in the process of making more (bad timing I guess). The floor just in front of the ice machine was a bit slippery with water and could have used a quick mopping. And the manager and his helper were clearly moving as quickly as they could but really could have used one more pair of hands. The cook should not have to serve and restock too. While the service wasn't unacceptably slow (I've had slower at major chains), it wasn't as quick as it could have been with just one more person behind the counter. read more

UNDERWHELMED This is my first Yelp review, and sad to say, I wish it were better. Being summer, I have been on the hunt for the best burger(s) around. After hearing rave reviews from friends, I decided to drive the 20 minutes to Jake's and experience the hullabaloo for myself. First off, I agree with many other Yelpers in saying the dining area was clean. It was, but to me that is the bare minimum to get me in the door, right? Secondly, the staff was adequate. It was about two hours until closing, on a gorgeous sunny day when most of their friends were likely having fun at the beach. Nobody was rude or impolite, just bored and tuned out to the fact that there was a customer there. Now, the most important part...the food! I ordered the simple Cheesy Burger. Holy heart attack!!! I had to ditch half of the cheese upon ordering, and should have cancelled the butter as well. As I ate, melted butter just streamed down my hands and face. I ended up washing my hands midway through my meal and wrapping the burger in a few napkins. Not exactly how I like to eat, but some of you may love that. The meat seemed fresh, but reminded me more of a Wendy's than a 5 Guys to be honest. I have definitely had better burgers and will write about them in the near future. Overall I would give them another chance if I happened to be in the area. I'd probably try one of their monthly specials - which gives them some uniqueness - and have them hold off on the butter. read more

We went there for a quick dinner last night (Saturday night at 8pm), and after about 5 minutes of waiting outside in the drive through, we finally drove away. Jake's is a place we will tell people to avoid. While we were waiting, an employee came out and watched us while he smoked a cigarette. When we left, we saw a manager standing two feet away from the drive thru, and there were at least three people cleaning - including the guy that was smoking outside. The two other times we ate there, the burgers were okay. They weren't anything special, but each meal ran about $12 each (for burger, fries, and a shake). It's a nice selection of toppings, but that's a pretty hefty price for them. Seeing as how there's a Wendy's .5 mi away and a Burger King next door, Jake's is not worth double the price for a tenth of the service. I ordered the burger of month: Philly Cheeseburger (double patty with fried onions, american cheese & mushroom) Jake's is a fit between BK and Red Robbin (even though Red Robbin isn't awesome either but it's a more premium burger. The best burger I've had was at Plan B Tavern where the patties are good and lean beef - but those run for about $12+) Overall, it's a place worth going to, I'm not making it a mission to return, but they have shakes. This is a neat little burger place, one of many that seem to be popping up all over the place it seems. They have a nice expanded menu with salads, chili fries, milk shakes, onion rings and veggie burgers so we decided to give it a try. Unlike other reviewers, I found plenty of friendly staff as well as the manager actually out on the floor helping out and being involved. I had the grilled cheese with mushrooms with a side large fries and chocolate banana milk shake. The grilled cheese was pretty good with a bit too much grease on the bread. The fries were OK but not anything special and not nearly a large portion like I expected to have in order to share/trade for onion rings. The milk shake was really really good. My Fiance had a burger with tons of toppings. It looked good and, although overall he said it was OK, it was dripping with way too much mustard. He also had onion rings which were excellent. If you want a comparison between Jake's and Five Guys, here you go: Two pattie (1/4 lb) hamburger, fries, drink for @ $7.50. Five Guys is $11.00+ for the same but you get a ton more fries there, if that's what you're after. Both are clean. Five guys you get peanuts (in the shell) while you wait. Both have friendly service. I think the wait time is shorter at Jake's but that could be perception or just when I've gone. I prefer Jake's. I don't need all those fries for $4. Jakes is closer to where I work. read more
