When Waypoint first opened, it was a huge deal! For those of us Alden & Harlow lovers, we were excited that a seafood version was opening up. For the Harvard Square restaurant frequenter, it was exciting that a new, trendier spot was opening up in the area. While Waypoint does serve seafood and is trendy, sadly, it has yet to wow me. I've eaten here a few different times and it's fine, but not what it should be for the prices. The pizzas always feature too much oil and garlic and the roasts are unremarkable. The pastas though, are tasty! As are the drinks. I do wish they had more vegetable and salad options (okay, maybe I just wish they would have the kale salad I love at Alden & Harlow). Service is nice and there's good vibes, which I guess is what we're all paying for. But given a choice on where in Harvard Square to go for a treat yourself meal, I'm sticking to Alden & Harlow. read more

I've had Waypoint in my bookmarks forever and decided to try them out for their $1 oysters Mon-fri from 5-7pm! The interior and overall vibe of the place was really nice. We ordered 48 oysters, the crab fries and clam pizza. The fries were amazing but I wouldn't recommend the pizza it was extremely salty to me. Definitely would've been a 5 star but our waiter kept making us feel uncomfortable every time we would ask for another dozen of oysters.. he'd ask if we spoke amongst ourselves first before ordering another (obviously we're here for the oysters.) I am taking one star off for service, but food is 5 stars! Definitely get a reservation, it was pretty packed when we got there. We got the Octopus Polpetti and Crab French Fried to start. Both delicious in very differ ways. We also got a couple drinks to start. My husband got the New School White Pie and I got the Uni Bucatini - BOTH WERE DELICIOUS! The vibe was pretty great and prices were reasonable for how yummy the food was. Took us a while to get the check as well as for our food to come out, so I'm chalking that up to a busy night. The last time I was here there was parking out front & across st yet not any more.... I grind teeth submit other options but no rez free til 10 .. So here I am , I order Blue Crab and Angel Hair which was basically 4 rolls of pasta bland no flavor or seasoned and about 4-5 dimes sizes Guanciale pieces and 2-3 Jalapeño peppers...NO CRAB NO BREADCRUMBS No taste absolutely did not look like the pictures of other yelpers pics , send back only to get pizza ....AT A SEAFOOD spot!!!! There Octopus was tuff n rubbery texture did def not taste like butter ..... Getting drink was like flagging a taxi down.... waypoint is super overrated. my boyfriend and i came here for date night and it was subpar. we ordered the smoked chicken raviolo, burger and a dozen oysters. the oysters were pretty good and prepared quickly. however, the other two dishes took almost an hour to be prepared. the smoked chicken raviolo was very sour and not at all what i expected. they have happy hour oysters for $1 each between 5-7pm. the vibes and layout of the restaurant are super nice, but i don't think i'll be back. overall rating: 5/10 read more

Waypoint is a HARD NO. The Salad was overdressed, the plates were small, they were sold out of an app at 7 pm, and the food was excessively salted. I usually dine in Boston but gave this place a try. Just drive a few more minutes into town and grab a plate. I informed the manger about the salad and her response was, "I'll let the kitchen staff know", with a dismissive tone. I would note we (aside from waitstaff of Latin descent) were the only folks of color there. I'm unsure if this factored in, but I did make the small, and important observation. I'd like to say outright that the food itself was really darn good. Whether or not the food quality deserves 4 or 5 stars can be debated, however, when I consider value I don't see myself returning here. Here's the thing: tapas really just doesn't work here. but, I shall get into that a little bit later. I had ordered two entrees ("plates" as they call them) the Smoked Bluefish, and the Wood Roasted Char Belly. My parents meanwhile had ordered a Whole Roasted Branzino which I had the opportunity to sample. Food came out hot and fresh 20 minutes after we had placed our order. I have nothing against a slightly longer wait time if food is being made fresh for you, though something to munch on in the interim. I am not an expert in fish, but I do like to think that I know good food from not so good food. The Smoked Bluefish was awesome. The fish was cooked very nicely, the skin had a delightful Char on it. The puree it was served with including the greenish Oriole around it was lovely, adding a nice smooth, and gently starchy texture. The greens added a nice touch of freshness and weren't by any means overdressed. The Wood-Roasted Char Belly was amazing as well. I'm a fan of belly of all sorts, be it pork or fish. What I especially loved about this one was the variation in textures right below the skin. Similar to the bluefish it was cooked quite nicely. The puree was a little bit different this time, little bit salts your butt for this dish it worked. The greens did their part in adding the freshness, but I would have liked the little bit more creativity. Word to the wise, chew it well. Otherwise, you may have the uncomfortable experience of it trying to go down both pipes at the same time. And talk about that egg yolk and caviar... I have Slavic ancestry so I have no fear of caviar, but for this one... even if you've never had any, go for it! I promise you'll love it. The spoon is there for a reason... what is that Nike slogan? A little piece I had of the Branzino showed that it was cooked well, however, since I didn't get the skin as much I can't speak to the flavor there. However what I can note is that the puree with this dish was quite salty, considering the size of fish there was not enough of it. In terms of veggies: other than a couple rings of onion, the squash was barely cooked, if at all. Now regarding the value/my issues with tapas here Please understand, that I have nothing against tapas. However, It is one thing to order a plate of tacos and share them with a friend or two. It is an entirely different matter to get a single piece of fish not much larger than a credit card (by surface area). Furthermore, if you were to try cutting these things in half, because of the skin you'll end up with a mess. If you're eating it yourself that's fine, but if you're trying to share it... heh heh heh good luck. Case in point: the Wood Roasted Char Belly comes with that egg yolk/caviar combo on a spoon. If you're sharing this dish, and you and your friend(s) both want to try it I suggest the "eeny-meeny-miny-moe" method as opposed to trying to cut the egg yolk in half. It's designed to be put in your mouth whole. and you only get the one. Now, if this dish cost $5 or maybe even $7 it wouldn't be that bad. Considering how much you get and how much you're paying for it the value just isn't there. I had two "plates" and left still hungry After shelling out (no pun intended) $33. Saw all the great reviews so decided to come check this place out, and it was just ok. My partner and I ordered multiple items off the menu: Half a dozen oysters, steak frites, salmon crudo, one of their pizzas, and some of their desserts. The oysters were phenomenal, a bit on the brinier side but the mignonette and hot sauce pairing balanced out the taste perfectly. The salmon crudo was the lowest point of the meal; $20 for 5 small pieces of fish covered in toppings that overwhelm the obvious freshness and quality of the fish. Some of the puffed rice bits tasted bitter and burnt and the sea salt finish (I assume sea salt, we saw the person in charge of sending orders out putting a lot of salt on everything going out of the kitchen) completely ruined it, it was so excessively salty it was barely palatable. The steak frites were a highlight, the steak was beautifully cooked albeit also on the saltier side. It was a bit dry to eat at times, and the chew on the steak was much more noticeable since there was no sauce on the steak itself. The fries tasted burnt/like they were cooked in really old oil...also just based off the color that they were. The aioli didn't taste like much, just like a regular mayo. All in all, the service was rather mediocre but the food was around 3-4 stars. I'm giving 3 stars because I didn't see the servers doing anything special in particular, as it was a bunch of random employees that would come up and fill your water, take your plates, and bring out your food...we only got to see our server a few times when we'd wave her down. read more

The $12 crab dusted fries and $19 tomato pie were the best dishes we got and the pie was a white pizza with roasted tomato halves on top rather than a red sauce base. The tautog crudo was a tiny portion for $18 and both the $38 lobster cacio e pepe and $29 Jonah crab and angel hair were bland pasta with little meat. The drinks were alright - we got the Venetian forecast, wild rose, an average beer, and some red wine. Was told by our server that smith & cross in one of the drinks is a whiskey and fortunately googled, saw it was a rum before they made the drink, and switched. This has been on my must-try list since they opened and man oh man, did it build up a whole lot of anticipation being affiliated with Alden & Harlow, my absolute fave. Maybe that was it huh? As we sauntered in, we spotted a couple of great seats at the bar and started ritually with an order of oysters (1 from Maine and 2 locally in Mass) and they were nothing short of awesome. Very fresh, nice brininess and shucked perfectly and paired with their homemade hot sauce and mignonette. We were excited to try their crudos too so we asked our bartender for a recommendation and ended up with the Chopped Tuna Crudo. Unfortunately, this is where it started to go wrong. One way to sum this dish up is that it should NOT be described as a crudo. It was so heavily seasoned and salty to the point that we couldn't really taste the fish. Adding on, we also ordered a couple bar type items - the Crab French fries and Smoked Whitefish pizza and again, similar to the Tuna Crudo, it was very salty. The octopus was fairly better but on the broader end of having had octopus in many other places, we weren't super impressed. Near the end, we didn't feel satisfied with what we ordered and decided to throw in an order of the Hiramasa Crudo and the Uni & Caviar toast which, amen, was completely redeeming. This crudo was fresh, light and absolutely delicious; Everything you'd expect a good crudo to be. The toast was unique so it was fun to try out. So I think my lasting impression for Waypoint, if you're thinking of coming, is do order their raw bar. It's amazing and ask for the milder crudos. Waypoint is my go to for oysters, especially their happy hour specials. Once every few months, we'll sit in the dining room to enjoy dinner vs. being barflies. Their oysters and clams are shucked by the best shuckers around: always clean, sans pieces of shells stuck behind with the best hot sauce around. Usually, I'm a purist when it comes to oysters but once in a while, their hot sauce gives it a perfect spice. Service is always top notch. Our server, Victoria was friendly, knowledgeable and definitely knew her stuff. I've had the uni bucatini here for ages and it's always a favorite. Unfortunately, last night, it was not. The dish was tepid at best and noodles were too al dente. We ate it because we were notoriously hungry but offered our feedback because it's a dish we just love too much. She relayed the feedback and got us another order (we didn't ask for it and was happy to have it left on our check) and her charisma just took over. Staff like Victoria is what'll keep us coming back to Waypoint. I will say that without a doubt, their staff is well trained and seasoned and just get it. Stop by here for their oysters, happy hour or not but their notable dishes are definitely not to be missed! The food was fine. The service, oof. We showed up on time for our reservation on a Monday night. It wasn't busy, probably at just over a third of capacity. It took over ten minutes for a server to come over after we were sat. My husband asked if an ingredient could be substituted in a mocktail due to a food allergy, and the server said no (though after some prodding he agreed to ask a bartender, who was happy to accommodate). After receiving drinks it was another fifteen minutes before our server returned to take our dinner order. We skipped apps because everything was taking so long and we were hungry. Dinner was served promptly. Well, MY dinner was. The runner gave me my entree, then walked off with my husband's and gave it to another guest at another table. It was bewildering. The manager did apologize. Overall, Waypoint has good food but is an exercise in frustration. The service is bad, the booths are too small, and no one seems to be taking pride in what they're doing. Even the patrons don't seem to care - a woman two seats away spoke on a loud speakerphone for the second half of our meal. We honestly went here only because my boyfriend got a gift card. We tried the following... - Oysters (6) - Crab Fries - Steak Tartare - Creekstone Ribeye (20oz) - Cinnamon Sugar Donuts I'm not a huge oyster person, but the oysters were good and were some were my favorite beach on Cape Cod, so it gets points for that. The Crab Fries, were good but nothing extravegant? Probably wouldn't get them again since it was just fries tossed in "crab powder" and very filling so I could eat as much of the other stuff we got. Steak Tartare was delicious and wonderful - it was weird to eat the steak tartare on a crumpet or sorts. I almost wish there was a crispy element to it to balance out the textures. The Ribeye was amazing as well - however it did not seem like 20oz of steak, but it was cooked perfectly and tasted pretty good. The highlight was those donuts though - warm, crispy on the outside soft on the inside. SO GOOD. We had a very nice (and wonderfully nerdy) waiter. My boyfriend also got some assorted drinks that he enjoyed. Overall, I enjoyed my experience here and if the time arose, I would come back, but it's a bit expensive so I probably won't be back here again. I think we found our new favorite brunch place in Cambridge!! Located between Harvard and Central squares, I walked by the place a million times and am so happy I finally tried it! We went for their Sunday brunch and everything was absolutely amazing. We made a reservation but the place wasn't too packed and service was excellent. It's decorated chic and modern inside and is definitely a cool place to come with friends or out of town guests. The food was definitely the stand out. I had the potato pancake eggs Benedict and I will be dreaming about that meal every night for the rest of my life-- it was seriously THAT good. However, there are land options as well for the hard-headed non-seafood lovers such as Maine lamb shoulder. A high-end modern seafood restaurant worth every penny. I went here for a special occasion and it was well worth it. We ordered tapas style. Wood fired octopus, bread basket, oysters, halibut, and a salad. The oysters were tasty and local. Served with a variety of toppings that all suited the oysters well. The bread was tasty and was a variety of loads- all tasty. Served with an herbed butter and a squid ink sauce. The salad was underwhelming- basic lettuce, cucumber, carrot, and raddish and maybe one or two other things. Not worth it. The octopus was delicious. Cooked well and had a lovely purée served with a few micro greens. Halibut fillet was the star. Perfectly crispy skin. A rockstar of a a sauce that balanced acidity and complimented the texture of the fish. Absolutely delicious! Even the iced tea was good. I could tell it was freshly brewed, and had a hint of mint. The atmosphere is a little dimly lit though. It was difficult to read the menus, and the menus had smaller font, which made it not the easiest. Atmosphere pros: modern interior, raw bar right when you walk in, which makes you want to eat all of the seafood immediately. (That's how we decided to get oysters, actually) Would I go again?
