After seeing Yelp Baltimore's posting of their breakfast sandwich, I was sold! I was in the market for another brunch spot and Wayward came through with a quickness. I came here on a dreary Tuesday post holiday break. The interior gives you a western theme. Think wood! It gives you a saloon vibe. During my visit I had the steak and eggs with skillet potatoes. My meal was super delicious. The serving size was on par with price. Also during this visit I tried the Mimosa and Bloody Mary. This is where I was slightly disappointed. For 8 bucks a pop I expected to taste a lil bit more champagne or sparkling wine than I had in my glass. It tasted like a OJ crush mostly. The Bloody Mary was delicious to taste as well but, surprisingly void of alcoholic taste. What's up with that? If Wayward wants to compete in the brunch market, it'll have to give us some beverages that we can feel in addition to savory delicious bites. I would visit again. This time to have the Brisket Mac & Cheese (which no less than 5 people ordered during my visit) with the 8 Buck Boh & Beam Combo. At least I'll be guaranteed some likka flavor. LOL. read more

Previous times we have been in, the bartender was not nearly as friendly and sort of rude- we decided to try again and I am so glad we did! Feel like this place doesn't get enough love. I never see it that crowded, unless it's a really nice day and the patio window-garage doors are open. Wayward has some great food, great prices, good beer selection = my dream come true. I usually come in for Tuesday trivia and always feel like I walked away with value. $12 for .5lbs brisket, cornbread, and a side! Plus a large draft for $5, or maybe even less! Value. I was waiting to attend a Yelp Elite event on the same street but, I arrived pretty early so I decided to entertain Happy Hour. That's how I ended up here. I believe it was about 530pm so the bar was not crowded at all yet. The bartender acknowledged me as soon as I sat down. The bartender offered me water and a menu. By the time she came back I had decided to order a peach bourbon smash which was pretty good. I also chose to order the Buffalo Chicken Mac & cheese. It too was delicious. I'm not sure what night life brings in this place but, there was plenty of room to entertain many. I may have to go back on the weekend and in the evening to find out. Crushes!!!! I'm in love with the crushes here!! Wayward definitely know how to make a solid crush. I come here strictly for the crushes. I only order food because I don't want to appear like I came here just for crushes...haha! I recommend getting the 'Strawberry Lemonade' and another one and another one.. There is this male worker who excels at his job of serving/bartending/waiting (during brunch)! He always has a smile, is very helpful with ordering, and makes the best crushes out of all the other workers on staff. The food here is pretty solid too, the wings are saucy and tasty. I will say to pass on the mac n cheese brisket though. It is served in a rather small Mason jar and the mac itself was bland and the brisket was sparse in quantity and dry and flavorless.. pretty disappointing. I had to add Tabasco sauce to the dish and eventually ended up giving the remaining 2/3rd of it away (to my boyfriend who will eat just about anything). Even he admitted the dish was bland to his standards (but not inedible). All the other dishes on the menu are solid though! Definitely order some potato hash, they're crisp and soft in all the right ways! Wayward also gets extra points for keeping a clean (ladies') restrooms! We had the best experience at Wayward Smokehouse!! The manager and staff were all so friendly, responsive, and organized in helping us plan a large party brunch and we cannot thank them enough! The food was amazing and every single dish was a 10/10. The kings pancakes (pictured) were epic, filled with bacon and topped with peanut butter fluff, carmelized bananas and whipped cream. The bbq skillets and Benedict's were very popular in our group and the chicken and waffles may compete for fave in Baltimore. Also, don't sleep on the pigs in a blanket, their unique take on them was so great!! I loved that for brunch they have bottles of champagne for $15 and bring you a carafe of oj so you can make as strong or weak as you choose. We all cannot wait to come back soon! The food was a standout but we really will be back because of the amazing service. A great team like that needs to be recommended, keep up the awesome work guys. The Brisket Grilled Cheese with the au jus was the best sandwich I have ever eaten. The K Pop fries were the perfect blend of savory and sweet. "TERRIBLE TERRIBLE EXPERIENCE!!! For our first night out in Baltimore with my girlfriend's friends from PA school, something disturbing happened. She was the only Asian girl in a group of 12, and the bouncer, wearing a security vest, singled her out. Despite her having an ID and being over the legal age, he initially refused to let her in without even scanning her ID. When she insisted, he reluctantly scanned it. Although the ID was valid, he proceeded to bend it. We decided to leave, and as we did, he mockingly said, 'Good, leave haha,' and started cursing at her. On our way home, we encountered him again. I confronted him about his behavior, and he gave a bullshit reason why he did what he did. As we walked away, he told the next patrons, 'Yeah, f*** Asian people.' I turned around and confronted him, and a large man in orange warned, 'Don't get beat up for your girl.' I said come on then lets go and then he told the guys wearing the security tag "go in ill take over". Please do not support this racist establishment that threatens minorities." read more

On a rainy Sunday without a lot of options we found this Gem in Federal Hill! All I can say is Delicious.. The Mac Cheese Pulled Pork Balls, the Fried Greens with Beef Brisket & Fried Green Tomatoes were so flavorful!! The Strawberry Lemon Crush drink was the best.. We haws the orange crush & blueberry crush also. Tyler was the Best Bartender ever!! He attended to our every need even when there was none! My only complaint is the seating ( all barstools) the Wayward Burger was also good and the smoked turkey was awesome, you can actually taste the smoke flavor talk about Great BBQ!!..we can't wait to return!! read more

One of my favorite bars in Federal Hill recently rebranded as Wayward Southern Bar + Kitchen. One of my friends visited shortly after they reopened and shared a delicious picture of their Brisket Mac & Cheese. As a brisket and mac & cheese lover, this dish quickly topped my list of things I needed to try ASAP. A friend and I headed over for brunch and started with crushes. Specifically a grapefruit and strawberry lemonade. The strawberry lemonade was my favorite, but they were both great. My friend opted to order the Pig n' Cow Omelette which was delicious. It was a bacon and cheddar omelette topped with a pile of their delicious smoked brisket. This omelette is a meat lovers dream! The brisket was moist and tender. If you're craving meat and you're at brunch, this is the dish for you. I opted to order the Brisket Mac n' Cheese - and this was easily the best mac n' cheese I've ever had. The smoked gouda combined with the tender flavorful brisket was one of the best flavor combinations I've had in a while. I will be back for this dish, without question. I wanted to try something different for lunch so I called and ordered the Smokehouse Sammy to-go which came with my choice of meat on a martins potato roll, rosemary parmesan fries, summer slaw, and house pickles. I chose the brisket. As I was driving back to work, the smell of the food made me sample a little while I was waiting at a red light. After the first couple of bites, I was hooked. I ended up parking in front of my building and eating right there in the car. Never made it upstairs to my office. Didn't even slow down to take pics. The brisket was so moist and flavorful that it tasted good on its own even without the sauce. But the sauce was so good that I had to eat some with the sauce on it too. You know you're eating good barbecue when the meat can stand on its own without sauce. The parmesan fries good too. Great taste, served piping hot, and they had the right amout of crisp to them. I'm not a fan of slaw so I can't really speak on it. I know the difference between KFC cole slaw and good cole slaw but since I really don't like either, i had to pass on it. It looked good though. This is not chain restaurant barbecue. Their meat tastes like somebody's uncle stood around a smoker all day wearing a linen short set and a pair of dad sandals while drinking beer and telling stories with his friends. I'm a fan. So I came here with my co-workers on a Thursday lunch. We made reservations for 11:30 am but we got here a little early around 11 am. The waiters were really friendly and seated us right away. My first complaint would be that we were the only ones in the restaurant but it took them an hour before our appetizers were served. I got: 1. Deviled Eggs - The yolk mixture was really creamy and the addition of deep fried pork rind on the top was oh-so-delicious. 2. Brisket Mac & Cheese - This was like heaven in my mouth. I could tell that my arteries were clogging up from all the cheese and fat but I ain't complaining - that's how good it was. 3. Plate O Meat with brisket and boar sausage - This was the biggest let down. The main entree is supposed to be the "umph" of any restaurant but I was so disappointed. I got the same brisket that I had in the Mac & Cheese but for some reason, for the platter, it was dry. What was even more dry was the boar sausage. I am a huge meat lover but I ended up not finishing more than half of my Plate O Meat. So, although the main entree was super dry and the service was slow, I would come back but only for their appetizers with a smaller group of people. read more

So I never came here when it was Cowboys & Rednecks because this black girl tries to stay away from those things, but the new name and spruced up interior is more inviting. Nice decor, beautiful rear bar, and cute, newly branded and designed menus. I ordered the fried green tomato BLT. Holy bacon! It was really good. Thick cut bacon with a touch of sweetness, presumably maple. Thick slices of green tomato fried, not quite to perfection; they were a little darker than I like, but not offensive in flavor. I could have used more lettuce, but any carnivore would have been pleased. Finished with handcut fries for the win. The server was nice and food came out fast, which is great for the lunch hour. I arrived at Wayward around 4:30 after work; not many patrons at all. The first time I ordered the salad with buffalo chicken. The greens were tossed in entirely too much dressing---be sure to ask for it on the side. The chicken was tasty, but honestly the amount of dressing was just disappointing. The service wasn't that great even though the place wasn't busy. I decided to give Wayward Kitchen another try and it was better. I sat at the bar and service was quicker than my last visit. Whoa! This place surprised me! I was in Baltimore for work and have been frequent some places around Federal Hill and so this place just seemed like as good of a place as any to grab a beer. Big place. It had a cool rustic but not an amusement park feel to the interior. The front of the restaurant was open and it was a beautiful Fall evening so the fresh air was nice. I sat at the bar and initially was put off by the fact that there were not too many choices for beer for such a big place (in their defense they did have a tone of spirits, particularly bourbons and whiskey) but I was able to settle in to an IPA that made me pretty happy. Bartenders, all of them, were super friendly and very helpful describing the beers, appetizers, and food options. Seemed genuinely happy to answer my questions and very knowledgeable about their food. Now, speaking of food. It should be said, that I like barbecue. I like it so I look for it but because I like it, I am frequently less than impressed when I find it. Not because it is bad but because it is just average. This place really blew me away. I had the 2 meat plate and that came with two sides. I went with Brisket and the pork belly along with mac and cheese with some truffle fries. The Bartender said they were known for their brisket and it was really really good but the pork belly, oh my, that was a taste sensation! There was a little crunch to the fattier part of the meat and a tenderness to the rest that just brought the flavors out. Both meats were so good they really didn't need sauce but this place had you covered there too with 6 different sauces to choose from you get what you want from your mustard based sauce to your spicy, the tangy, the sweet. Lots to choose from. Sides were awesome too Mac and Cheese was gooey and the noodles just right. Fries were crunchy with a soft center and loaded up with Parmesan and seasoning. It all came to you on a big sheet tray. Looked amazing. I will post a pic next time so watch for an updated rev It was a lot of food too. It was a struggle to eat it all and maybe should have taken a to go box but it was just too good! Very reasonable price for meat especially that much of it! Not only will I be back, I am really looking forward to my return. Update: just stopped in here to Wayward. . . They changed their menu (check out my pics). Added some good stuff in the happy hour/appetizer section but they changed their plates too. The options now are a lot less food but I have to tell you, you are not going hungry and it is still an amazing value for what you get. DO NOT MISS THE PORK BELLY. So good. I actually think the portions (while smaller) are way more reasonable. Still a ton of delicious food. 12 bucks for a plate (10 bucks on a Thursday special) but honestly, you couldn't touch that price for what you get at just about any place else. Order the all meats platter with Gouda cheese Mac and burnt beans. I also ordered parmesan fries. It was $50 with tax. The meats were brisket, chicken, pulled pork, ribs and a sausage. The meat was flavorful but they didn't give me any barbeque sauce. The Gouda Mac and cheese was not as good as I thought it would be. Thought it would be better. The beans are ok but nothing special. The cornbread was excellent. Probably one of the best things about the meal. I probably wouldn't order it again but I'm glad I tried it. read more

The lunch menu is small, so you would hope the limited options were good: The brisket sandwich was really bad today. I'm hoping it was just a bad batch, but it was tough, chewey and hardly hot. Presentation-wise, it was good, but the meat ruined the whole thing. I really had a tough time finishing it and had to douse it in sauces to make it through because I was hungry enough to eat my own leg. Wayward is a new barbecue place in Fed Hill, oddly located right next door to the other barbecue place in Fed Hill, but Wayward is a much different experience. It's wide open with a small outdoor seating space, and lots of TVs everywhere. The stools on the deck are pretty small and uncomfortable, while the stools at the bar are clearly wider. Probably to save space, but I guess that's the trade off for the breeze. They have succumbed to the Federal Hill brunch pressure, so if you get there before 2:00 you are stuck with the breakfast menu. Which is silly, since they are clearly courting the sports crowd and the Ravens games start at 1:00. Do they really think I want to cheer my team on with scrambled eggs and a beer? We made do with a basket of Biscuits until we could order real food. These three southern style biscuits are huge and tender. If you want to fill up on bread this is the way to do it. We did find the jalapeno butter to be hit or miss. Their brisket is tender and tasty, as was the pulled pork. The platter gave us so much meat that my wife and I wound up taking most of it home. The Skillet Fries were interesting. The Brussel Sprouts seemed like they were boiled rather than pan fried, but the pork belly and spicy cheese sauce drizzled over everything did make for an alright dish. Wayward has delicious food, a good atmosphere and good dining seating so you don't have to hear everyone else's conversations but unfortunately mediocre service at best. Our waitress was never around when we wanted a refill on bottomless mimosas, and even checked the table next to us and ignored our table of 6 when we called out for her when she was 2 feet away. The place only had 3 tables including us, with two waitresses. Brunch and dinner are very delicious and is a great spot to stop and grab a drink or watch a game. Their fried green tomatoes sandwich for brunch does have an egg but the menu does not list that, which was how I wanted it so don't be deterred! read more

I came today to have brunch for my birthday. The staff is really friendly and personable. I have the brisket mac and cheese and it was inexplicably good. It's a must have. Wayward, as it currently exists, is an embarrassment to BBQ, but also to itself. I am rating as 1 star, but it really should be zero stars. In a vacuum, it could be 3.... but compared to where this place USED to be, it is a zero. I am not sure what happened, but I strongly suspect they lost their chef and pitmaster. I have been eating here fairly regularly for the past 2 years, but have not been here recently (last 6 months) because of work travel. The place is currently an embarrassment. The menu has changed multiple times... gone are the generous meat platters, replaced with "cheesesteaks" and fried chicken. The current meat platters give you a 2oz serving of cole slaw and a damp biscuit. The mac n cheese used to be amazing.... now it has been replaced by what someone in the kitchen staff remembers as amazing... but it is a poor substitute. The meat is dried out, the prices have increased, and the quality of the food is on par with airline platters. Mission BBQ is a better quality and value. That should be eye-opening to Wayward's management. Food keeps you afloat, not cheap beers for college kids on a Thursday night.... read more
