Thank you We Paddle Maui for making our cultural tour happen! I was monitoring the waters ever since we arrived and finally the swells calmed down. However, I didn't want to book anything ahead in case the waters were rough and I'm a non-swimmer. Anyway, our concierge agent helped us make our tour happen with We Paddle Maui the day before we were to fly home. Ivan and Pune were the partners in crime who showed up last minute to teach us how to canoe an outrigger boat. They made us feel safe and comfortable, taught us how to properly hold the paddles and commands before we hopped on our water tour. Ivan and Pune were great guides! We paddled around Black Rock, educating us the history and importance of the site. We even tried to pretend to race in the outrigger boat, but it was hard, especially when you're trying to keep pace with the expert paddlers such as our guides! We had an AWESOME experience with Ivan doing a private outrigger canoe. We brought our two younger kids and the rest of our family. Ivan made our experience, he was so knowledgeable,, funny, and a great guide. We learned a lot about Hawaiian and Polynesian culture, and paddled for an hour. It was not too physically challenging (I was in the front of the boat so couldn't see him behind me, but suspect Ivan was in the back motoring this boat along). We had a great clear day and were able to see the coral beneath us. Our guide has done 90 mile paddles in the past, so we knew we were safe on the shoreline here. It was a fantastic outing and I highly recommend for anyone visiting Maui. read more

I did the canoe tour in the morning 8AM on August. Ivan was super friendly and patient, gave us a small lesson on the history of canoeing in Hawaii and the keywords for the activity. It was fun and the water was soft and warm. This was my favorite activity on the island! read more

Hugo was a great guide for our outrigger experience. He explained how to hold the paddle, as it was not like a typical paddle it had a slight bend at the end of it. He taught us the Hawaiian commands and explained what each command meant so that we were all in sync when paddling. He taught us about the area and what we were seeing below us in the ocean as far as the coral and sand. On the way out to sea we saw the tips of reef sharks in the water and even sea turtles. Once were out in deeper waters several of us jumped out to swim in the ocean, but it was tough trying to get back into the outrigger, good thing Hugo explained how to get back in, and even helped. The ocean wasn't working to our benefit as far as the size of the waves, but Hugo had us try several times to get us to catch the smaller waves that were there. The owner of the Outriggers, Fabio was a great host and they had just brought on Anthony to start taking photos of guests while in the outrigger that you can purchase to capture the memories. All in all. GREAT company, GREAT people, GREAT Experience !!! read more

I don't leave many reviews but these guys deserve 10 out of 10. went on the outrigger. you get a ton of history and local tribal knowledge as well as a great hour on the water. if I didn't have to leave I'd have gone a second time. we were lucky enough to go out with James and Spud. We would do this again in a heartbeat! The guides (Spud and Sule) were standout - knowledgeable, committed, patient, encouraging, entertaining. They calibrated the pace/tempo to the physical abilities of the guests, took breaks just when we needed them, provided interesting and heartfelt commentary about what we were seeing, and gave us an experience we can't wait to repeat. Expect some physical exertion, take water, wear a hat and sunblock. There's no room in the canoe for anything else. This is a local business rebuilding after the Lahaina fire. Truly an incredible experience. I have been filming in Hawaii for the past 6 or 7 years and never gave canoeing a try and now regret it. Marine life isn't always accepting of gas powered prop engine, but are somehow drawn to the traditional Hawaiian canoes. When we first arrived to check in we got a little lost in the village area, but Hugo was a great help in directing us to the right place! First glance at the surf canoe I was pretty skeptical about how this excursion would go; however, I was blown away at the experience! We rode many waves and it was so cool being able to see all the coral and sea life under the clear, shallow water! Hugo also took us out to deeper waters (about 50 ft) and we got to jump in and swim around as well, which was also super cool.
