What a great time we have in the outrigger canoe. Jen was a fantastic guide and was knowledgeable about the Polynesian culture. We got to see turtles and reef shark fins as well as swim. I wish I would've brought my mask and snorkle. Even my sons, 10 and 5 years old, enjoyed it. I would do it again in a heartbeat and would definitely recommend it. read more

We had a really nice paddle in the outrigger canoe. Armadillo, aka Road Kill, RK for short was very authentic and knowledgeable about the area, the canoe, and marine life. The tide was out so we caught a few small waves and stayed relatively close to shore. We saw the largest sea turtle we had ever seen right next to the canoe, a few sharks coming in with the tide looking for food, and talked story for a bit about how he came to stay in Maui as well as the impact development was having on the reef. Overall, a great experience that anyone can do. Just go for it! read more

FABIO IS THE MAN My husband and I had so much fun learning to paddleboard. Fabio is patient, friendly, fun, and taught us a lot about the history of the sport as well as the history and ecology of the area we were in. We paddled pretty far out and sat on our boards, looking down into the water as turtles and even a monk seal swam near us. Fabio's beach office is the kick off of a great time, with a warm friendly greeting and send off. Today was a great day thanks to Fabio making it happen and a special day. I had an unplanned day off at the last minute and despite him not having a scheduled outing he made it work! Customer service job 1 plus, he loves what he does! I was on the outrigger wave riding trip on a Sunday afternoon. With blessing of the sea, we made our way out the channel to the edge of the reef welcomed by a school of jumping fish and a plethora of sea turtles popping up to greet us. The instructions were easy and the trip a pleasant trip pace. I enjoyed the wind, the sea spray and being aware of the bountiful connection we must preserve with care of the ocean. To top it off we made several fabulous runs with the waves surfing in with ease. I loved the splashing of the waves and navigating the water for a great afternoon. The outrigger canoe trip was an excellent experience for our whole family of four! Fabio was a great instructor who explained the basics of this Hawaiian tradition, as well as how to work as a team to maintain speed through the water. We paddled for the first 30 minutes in Lahaina harbor watching the surfers, and looking for sea turtles (we did see one), then the second half hour catching waves on this 30 foot long, built for surfing, outrigger canoe. This was an authentic Hawaiian adventure, a good work out, and a great way to see Lahaina harbor. Excellent views of the breath taking scenery of the west Maui mountains, Lanai, and Molokai....and loads of fun for the entire family. We would definitely do this again! read more

I highly recommend the two hour outrigger canoe trip. The time on the water was quite enjoyable. We saw fish, monk seas, and turtles and enjoyed watching the colors of the water change as we paddled. We just finished up our fabulous week in Maui. The hands down highlight of our week was our Canoe Surfing trip on Monday morning. We picked We Paddle Maui because all 4 of us could ride together (we did not need to take turns). Fabio greeted us right on time, we were given instructions, and then we headed out. We had 2 guides with us in the boat. The waves were not much that day, but the whales were all around! We had the most incredible whale watching tour (unexpected as we were planning on canoe surfing). We also sea turtles and a monk seal. Our guide encouraged us to jump into the water and listen to the whales "talking" -- amazing! At one point, there was a whale 3 feet from our canoe!! It was an unforgettable day. Fabio and crew were awesome (and just as jazzed as we were). We would definitely recommend We Paddle Maui for any sort of outdoor fun. Next time we are in Maui, we will definitely be back! We can't wait to get the pictures from Fabio to share with friends!! read more

Great experience! Captain Kirk was super fun and full of info. We got to see turtles, seals and some sharks on top of canoe surfing some waves!! Only a four star review as it was tough to find where they were located on the beach. Though it shows an address to meet them at, they are actually on the stretch of the beach in front of that address and not in a shop. Ask the locals who are standing around and they will lead you to the guide. read more

My kids, ages 10 and 8, had a great surfing experience with Fabio. He knew how to relate to them and get them comfortable with what was an entirely new skill. My son in particular is quite shy with adults, but Fabio was patient and earned his trust quickly. After half an hour practicing on the sand, they were off to the waves, where Fabio led them into smaller waves and then bigger ones as they grew more confident. Are they pro surfers now? No. But they each caught a few waves, stood up on the board, and came back to the beach eager to go back someday--which is a win in my book. Bonus: At the end of the lesson, Fabio talked to them about the importance of trying to improve every day, in whatever they set out to do--surfing, other sports, school, anything. Our family took a trip during our first visit to Maui last week. This was booked thru our hotel concierge at The Whaler. She told us to meet our tour guide near the beach/outriggers. We arrived 20 minutes early and were quickly confused due to no signage or person present from We Paddle Maui. Being concerned we called the concierge for guidance as no one answered the phone at We Paddle Maui office. She was trying frantically to find ot what was going on with our booking. Finally, we went and stood by an outrigger on the beach in hopes someone would show up. Our guide, Armadillo, finally showed up about 10 minutes late. He was a very nice guy but maybe a bit more laid back than we expected. Really bummed we felt rushed - didn't get any pics on the boat or with it, and when we did see a turtle we were kept so busy rowing we didn't get any pics. It's a very fun activity, but if we do again we won't use this business. It felt very rushed after we finally got out going on our excursion and it shouldn't have been since we were there on time. read more

On our 41st wedding anniversary, my wife and I decided to try canoe surfing with We Paddle Maui. It was THE BEST THING we did during our five-day stay on the island. Fabio and Ekolu were terrific, and they worked really hard paddling us beyond the surf-break multiple times to catch waves. I'm a surfer, but my wife has never been interested in trying, so this day was especially wonderful because we shared the thrill of catching waves together. If you do just one activity on Maui during your stay on the island, make sure you do something with We Paddle Maui. read more

we did a surf canoe trip during sunset and it was an amazing experience. we caught some waves in our outrigger canoe and got to paddle on the ocean with incredible views of the sun setting. we got to jump in the water and cool off a bit and see some sea turtles. The instructor was great and chill. very fun and gave us some history about lahaina and a brief overview on some of the culture. We just spent eight wonderful days on Maui enjoying everything the island offers - including a luau, snorkeling, mountain hikes, tent-camping in Hana, cliff-jumping, and sunrise bike tour down Haleakala - and my entire family (22yr son, 19yr daugher, 13yr daughter, my better half and me) still unanimously voted our morning on Dec 30 with Fabio and Akule the best time of all. We not only got an awesome 60-minute workout, but we learned so much about Hawaii and its history, language, flora, and fauna from our very knowledgable canoe captain Akule, whose family has paddled the Au Au Channel for generations out of their home in Lahaina. Fabio gave us expert instructions and we were paddling in perfect synchronization like a well-oiled machine right away. Saw more turtles that morning in one spot than we saw anywhere else on either Maui or Oahu! Great family memory. Thanks Akune and Fabio for a great memory. read more
