We sat on patio, ordered whitefish and walleye dishes in which both were good, but nothing memorable. We observed that the focus of server and front of house hostess is to turn tables as quickly as possible, this truly ruins the dining experience. We did find the high quality paper napkins somewhat unique, while everything else average. We decided to have our port, after dinner drinks, and chocolate at Vue on other side of canal... which was a great decision! We have come to this restaurant for more than 20 years. Typically very reliable good meals. Clearly there's been a significant change in recent weeks. The usual menu items are no longer available but more importantly, the kitchen and wait staff clearly don't communicate. After waiting for our ordered entrees over 40 minutes, waiter returned to inform us they were out of Caesar salad and could not make the whitefish dairy free! Worse than that, the so called "manager " (Philip) finally comes after requesting him, and he doesn't apologize, offers no solution's to address the situation. Could barely apologize until someone in our party of 5 said "what can you do to help make the situation better " to which he answers- I'll give you a $25 certificate for your next visit. Are you kidding me?? We just wanted solutions so everyone at our table could eat. Multiple items (not just one) wasn't available. Saturday of a holiday weekend and they had no Caesar salads (after ordering them and waiting 30 minutes for them). Then they told us they had no broccolini (again, after ordering it only to be told 30+ minutes later- "oops, we're out of that also". Clearly management has no oversight and they alleged manager on duty, is poorly trained with no skill set to even try and do a service recovery. I rarely complain about food service given all the staffing struggles most places have these days, but this wasn't a staffing issue- it was a complete failure of management. read more

Do not go when crowded. We waited almost an hour for our food. My fish was barely warm. My friend's prime rib was cold. How he ate it, I don't know. I had one bite and could hardly swallow the cold meat. The manager (Julie) came up to our table and actually asked if the food was served "At least warm?" We told her no. She apologized and quickly walked away. That's it. They made no attempt to fix it. They charged him full price - for a cold steak. read more

Zero stars are not available, unfortunately ! We have given this place 3 chances and the service is so bad, we have never had the opportunity to eat there. First time, server argued with us that when you order a Budweiser, you get a bud light and refused to bring the correct one. 2nd time, bartender gave everyone a free shot because she made too much. Then never returned and hung out with guys at the end of the bar. 3rd time, last night sat at the bar ordered a drink and menu. We are very disappointed; this is an upscale, expensive restaurant and the food should be fresh and healthy! The Weathervane has always been one of my favorite restaurants in the 20 years I've been coming to Harbor Springs. I live here full time now and was anxious to take my houseguests for her birthday. I couldn't have been more disappointed. Apparently the new management has changed the menu and I couldn't find anything that was appealing. None of the old favorites. Not even an appetizer. So not impressed. Maybe lunch menu is better. While I was disappointed with the menu I have to say that our waitress Lily was delightful. Also still love the Earl Young building so I hope they put back some of the favorites. read more

We spent 20 minutes at "1st in line" on our reservation before finally giving up, watching multiple parties seated ahead of us - despite the fact we were "1st in line." Each time we asked about our seating, the host staff found a new and different way to make it perfectly clear they had no intention of seating us. Probably a 3/5 rating for the food, but had to drop it to a 2/5 experience due to the prices and general service! The walleye entrée consisted of microwaved rice, a spoonful of sauce and partially burned, dried out fish. While the chicken Wellington used what could only be described as ice cream jelly and uncooked asparagus. This is in no way a fine dining or above average culinary experience. There's not too many fancy establishments in Charlevoix, best hit the road to Petoskey. read more

You pay a premium for the view. Place has lovely views of the Pine river and the boats passing. Food prices seemed doubled. A small cup of clam chowder was $9.50. My daughter ordered a kids meal which was $12 and the portions were small and she was left hungry. They also added a credit card surcharge which was disappointing. read more

Service was poor and food wasn't very good - waited 35 minutes and the experience was disappointing

Forgot my daughters order. By the time it came out everyone was done eating. Didn't bring out items I had asked for on my burger. Brought out fries that had been over cooked/burnt and sitting too long, the centers of the fries were hollow which signifies it was fried for too long. Asked them to remake new fries but they still came out over cooked again with no centers, just a crispy shell of a fry but at least they weren't dark brown this time. By the time I got my lettuce and tomato my burger had gotten cold. Horrible experience read more

Brenda, the server didn't care that they brought our meals incorrectly and was extremely rude about it when questioned, the manager Aaron , didn't care that we were dissatisfied and obviously was inexperienced at customer satisfaction and threatened to call the police so not to admit his limited management skills. Overall, the food was mediocre at best. We recommend that you do not patronize this establishment and stay away as there are many better options in Charlevoix.. Paul of course, you stick up for your employees, as they are probably too difficult to get good ones. But your manager, Aaron is a poor manager., He's inapt and inexperienced at what he does. He did nothing to resolve the challenges from the start. As far as Brenda goes, a simple apology would have done the trick. But she was snooty and very disrespectful to us. what waitress says I didn't like your tone or says thank you to being rude, she should be fired. were the customer they should be doing everything to make us happy by giving us respectful service, Your manager didn't like the fact that we told him that he was not customer friendly and then asked us to leave, he had no intention of solving the issues, no remorse for poor service. If you would like to have a direct conversation, we'd be glad to. But from our perspective, the restaurant is no longer a choice for us. we have told many of our friends already to just stay away. On top of that, the meal we had was poor. The potatoes were under cooked, the vegetables were limp, and the chicken was overshadowed by the amount of fruit that was placed in it. However the goat cheeses salad was tasty. Overall a very poor experience, but my feeling is that you really don't care Paul, you obviously weren't there to manage the place and left it in the supervision of very untrained rude help. Definitely one of our local favorites, and we live 45 minutes away from here. The Weathervane's building is a classic piece of architecture, too. Google 'Charlevoix mushroom homes' or 'Earl Young' for pictures, there might be pics of the restaurant on Yelp, also. Onto the food, always fantastic. The planked Whitefish is one fish that their known for, features oak plank, veggies and duquesne or duchess potatoes whichever, lol. Either way, those potatoes are beautifully piped and taste great to boot. And, I love potatoes, must be being half Irish, lol. Tonight, we ordered the Whitefish for Dad and Momma and I shared a Salmon Fettuccine on a red pepper or tomato pasta with butter/lemon/capers. A tad salty but dang delicious. I think everything is too salty and this is probably because I am damn salty, ha. Lastly, the lift bridge didn't go up at all during our meal but it was cold and rainy, so not exactly a boating day we reckoned. On nice days, the bridge rises every thirty minutes or so and watching the boats go by is 'cheap' entertainment. Keep doing what you are doing, fabulous people. This restaurant's receptionist and manager outright rejected my friend's family based on their religion - they saw religious garb and refused service outright, even threatening to call police. Is this an anomaly? Looking at a few reviews on Facebook, I found a subtle pattern of people noting how rude the manager was to innocent customers, only to have passive-aggressive and sometimes even untruthful responses to disgruntled customers. Do yourself a favor and show them that prejudice is not a Michigan value. read more

The Weathervane is right by the drawbridge in downtown Charlevoix. I knew it by the interesting shake roof. True to its name, there is a weathervane up there, too. Hubby has eaten there many times. His sister worked there during the summer while she was a college student. This was my first visit. We decided to sit in the bar area. The Saturday college football game was on the TV. A family with an adorable child was sitting next to us. We ordered French onion soup and a simple Caesar salad. Split those. Plenty for both of us. The beef stock was rich and beefy, the salad was crunchy. Hubby got the 1/3 pound sirloin burger. He liked the red onion on it. I ordered fish and chips, which came with a small bowl of coleslaw, which somehow tasted off to me, so I just pushed it to the side. Good thing I got the salad. The whitefish was from the local John Cross Fisheries, just down the road. Some of the best fried fish I've ever had. The batter was light and crispy. The fish was very light and tender. I only ate half, took the other half home. My advice: The portions are generous. Either split everything or plan to take home leftovers. Pricey. It was $50 for us to get dinner with leftover fish for me the next day. read more

Dinner was good and social distancing and tables far apart was appreciated in this COVID time. It was cold outside and we were told we cannot wait inside for the 45 min wait. Came to find out later that others did wait inside in bar area with tables for drinks only. Why we were not offered to go there is not clear. Waitress was friendly but I was unhappy when I found out that my wife's salad and my soup are ala card BECAUSE the waitress said "do you want soup or salad" with your entree? Now had she said "do you want to ADD a soup or salad with your entree" then it would have been clear that items are separately charged. But she made it sound as if we were given a choice between soup and salad- and this implied it is part of the entree. I did bring it up when we paid but she did not care - sorry this leads to lower tip..I hope this is not the general strategy to make more sales! read more
