Consistent quality and service at this Charlevoix Victorian mainstay. They served me a slice of medium rare roast beef that melted in my mouth! The Jameson Manhattans were perfect & our friends enjoyed their entrees also. Our table was placed in the front window so we had a people watching experience to boot. Our server Pam, actually remembers some of our favorite items & replaced or refilled as she observes. Missing the 5th Star was because it was so damn cold in the room. Ordered the broiled whitefish and watermelon cucumber salad. Highly recommend the salad. The whitefish not so much. It was bland and came to the table barely warm. I had to salt it generously to bring out any semblance of taste. Service was excellent. On the night we visited, it was VERY loud. However this was during Venetian Week so I expected it to be crowded and busy. There are many good places to eat in Charlevoix. Pass this one up unless there isn't any other place to eat. read more

The sushi was really good, surprise, the French dip was awesome along with the French onion soup. Service was excellent, of course Charlevoix is small town so everyone knows everyone. How have I been coming up here for the past 30 years and never eaten here?! Our food was delicious and our waiter was great. I ordered the filet mignon and it was so tender and delicious. The restaurant is next to our Bed and Breakfast! The food was good! My husband planned to have whitefish and he said it's great! I stole some of his food, it was light and healthy. No fishy smell. Sprinkle more salt and pepper if you are not that healthy! I got both Calamari and Tuna both of them were good, I like both and ate them all. I like the way they made calamari but for the tuna, it would be better if they could give me more sauce on top or put it on the side. I ended up dipping the tuna in my calamari sauce. The bread was fresh and delicious! I wish it came with fresh butter. Service was okay, the restaurant get busy real quick and it's not easy to find our guy. Overall it was a nice dinner! read more

I've been eating gray Gables for 17 years and it never fails to impress. Tonight, however, was exceptional. The lot homemade lobster gnocchi was the best thing I have ever eaten. This is fine dining in Charlevoix and you won't be disappointed. I'm surprised the average number of stars isn't at least four. Who can resist the "GG," an old house converted into an elegant restaurant with white linens and stylish bar area? My husband and I were initially seated at a teeny table awkwardly sandwiched between two tables along a bay window/curved wall. This table shouldn't exist imo; it's unreasonably close to other diners. We were kindly moved to a much better table. I wasn't very adventurous in ordering the Caesar salad with grilled chicken but it certainly didn't ruin the experience. Everything about it was wonderful and masterfully presented. The variety bread basket with flavored butter is absolutely delicious. I truly could have overeaten on that alone. This establishment is so cozy and romantic, and you're surrounded by beautiful wallpaper, china, woodwork and more. Can't wait to go back! read more

We along with another couple went to Grey Gables (Nov 2nd) and our waitress was Pam( very loud spoken but nice). We each ordered the 2 for$60. I showed Pam my $10 birthday gift(email ) and she said I could not use it as I was ordering a special. I then told her I would order a beer so I could use my gift. She brought me a beer and I was telling my wife I would use gift for my beer. Pam very loudly said you can't use it for the beer. I said I'm paying regular price for beer. Again Pam walking away said I could only use the gift if I ordered an Entree. I tried to ask her if I could buy a desert and use my gift certificate but she just walked away. I would like to start off my review by saying I loved my experience here a few years ago with my mom- however I cannot say the same about my experience yesterday. The staff was so clearly overworked (there weren't nearly enough servers for the amount of tables), probably due to college students going back to school I would assume. We didn't get refills and more bread for the table (I asked several times, never received more). I didn't complain about this because I knew our waiter was busy, but when 2 of our plates came out with green beans that were practically raw and our server asked how everything was, we said it was good but our green beans were raw. He told me he had no control over that, and that was the kitchen's job (obviously) but I figured I'd let him know so he could just fill in the kitchen. He just stared at me. It was all very uncomfortable, so I didn't mention all of the random fishbones found in my mom's walleye. I have loved grey gables in the past, but if you're understaffed, please seat less people, accept less reservations. It was so loud and the waitstaff was literally running across the room. It was not conducive to a pleasant ambiance. I'll hesitate to return and spend so much for that experience. read more

Two of us just popped in without a reservation on a Tuesday night - and it was BUSY! We were able to be seated right away at a bar table, and our server was quickly over to see about starting us off with drinks/apps. From beginning to end I left with no regrets, a full stomach and wanting more. The corn bisque soup couldn't be more fresh.. the meatballs with their homemade sauce is next level.. the filet with mash is second to none... and the dessert which was an apple cobbler was the perfect ending. Great little gem in the Charlevoix residential area. We stumbled on it by chance. It is on the first floor of an older house. The setting is pretty romantic. Staff was very professional. We didn't have a particularly bad experience, but our food was not palatable. It tasted like slightly improved hamburger helper/shepherds pie. The meatballs were dry and potatoes had no flavor. The walleye was bland and didn't even come with a lemon. The bolognese was filled with a ton of carrots and felt like it would pass as Shepards pie filling if it also had peas and potatoes. If people think this is gourmet they should try inventive food that meets its claims. The prices were far more than incredible food in downtown Detroit. We enjoyed the ambiance and the bread, although we were sat at a high top by the bathrooms, even though the far nicer booth in the bar was available. When I asked to sit in a nicer spot, they told me that those tables were for larger parties only. We will not be having them cater our Castle Farms wedding. read more

Darrin and Kelly the current owners have only given this place a more special place in my heart. Their food is always perfect, & service spot on. Their GM Chuck treats you like family, & personally checks on you and your experience. Where else does the GM text you alerting you of events or most recently of KELLY'S latest work of art the Pumpkin Cheese Cake drizzled in Caramel sauce... Not a great experience. Had an 8:00 reservation and didn't get seated until 8:40. The hostess was awful. She said when we got there that the server was cleaning and setting the table. There were several people waiting for a table with and without reservations. A party without a reservation got seated before us. Also, a party of 4 who had a reservation at 830 got seated before a party of 3 who had a 730 reservation and before us, party of 2. There were several seats at the bar but we were told we could not order a drink while waiting. Seems like you could make money while running behind. The hostess kept saying short staffed, but if that's the case, don't take reservations at full capacity and don't take walk-ins. Once we finally got seated, I asked the server what the chef's vegetable was. He said it was carrots and broccolini but they were out of carrots so it would be broccolini and cauliflower. Perfect. When dinner came out, both of us got a side of baby carrots only that were half cooked. I asked the server and he said they gave carrots again. I asked if I could get the broccolini and cauliflower and he brought a side of broccolini and broccoli. When we got the check, there was a charge of $14 for the extra side. Over the last 19 years coming to Charlevoix, Grey Gables has become our favorite restaurant ... until last night. The bar and bar area were extremely busy. There was a gentleman at the bar with an empty seat on each side. I asked if he would mind moving over a seat, and he said, "Sure, no problem." The host came over SEETHING. He said it was Very Rude and Totally Unacceptable. He asked us leave! We thanked the gentleman at the bar and left. Interestingly, on several previous dinners at their bar, WE were asked to move over a seat to accommodate another guest (which we gladly did, as is normal when sitting at a bar). None of these guests were called RUDE and none of these guests were asked to LEAVE. Obviously, Grey Gables will not miss the business of a vacationing couple. We are just sad and disappointed as we had planned 4 dinners there during our 2 week stay. C'est la vie! read more

Just not living up to its history. Very cool atmosphere (even minus the piano guy) but service and food just so so. The menu just doesn't wow and there are so many better options in the area. We force ourselves to give this place another go every few years in hopes that it gets back some of its glamour and more importantly the menu improves. The broiled walleye was not good - had bones and wasn't prepared with any thought. Server never asked if we wanted another cocktail. Just not worth the visit. A lovely old house, but food is priced pretentiously; there is a fancy atmosphere, but their service and food do not add up to a top-notch experience. We had a reservation on a Friday evening (July 2021) - reservations recommended! (They were short staffed and there was a wait for tables.) The dining area is in a beautiful old house with high ceilings or in the added bar near a live piano player. The atmosphere is pleasant - white tablecloths, fancy place settings, high ceilings, brightly colored walls and paintings. The space is, however, noisy and as more diners came in it was very difficult to have a conversation, even at our small 3-top. The wine list is extensive but expensive (most bottles above $50 and into multiple hundreds). We started with a special of 6 oysters (NY bluepoints), which were tasty and fresh with mignonette and cocktail sauce sides. Great starter and fresh (I usually would avoid oysters in the Midwest but these were good)! We also had a calamari appetizer, beet and arugula salad, andcrispy Brussels sprouts. For mains, dover sole, hanger steak, chicken. Very nice. Problems, though, with the service. Our server had major troubles opening the wine, which was done at the table but they hadn't the familiarity or stills to do this well. At another table, the cork broke in the bottle. For us, the soup was served with the main course, long spoons were given with the soup instead of soup spoons, the hanger steak was recommended medium but I thought it should've been better medium rare, one entree was served on a chipped plate (when we pointed this out the server didn't seem to understand and no apology was offered), and when they served a bread basket at the beginning of the meal no plates given to anyone until we requested them. (In recognition of our server, they did say they were only a few weeks into the job, but for the restaurant management, I can only say that if this is the situation you must provide some recognition to the guests!) The service was bailed out somewhat by the food, but it was an underwhelming meal when considering the service and how loud it was which made it really not very possible to enjoy the meal, nor did it seem worth the excessively high prices. Review based on experience in July 2021. Most restaurants in Charlevoix have signs during they're short staffed so that may have some bearing on this, but that said the restaurant should offer some sort of recognition of this situation - comp an appetizer, something else "on the house", lower prices or discounts? read more
