This place is a little piece of heaven in the middle of nowhere. Their danishes and kolaches are so yummy, but their rice krispy treats are TO DIE FOR! Sweet baby Jesus, you could seriously become diabetic in one gorge-fest here. Trying to do the vegetarian thing so I ordered a pimento cheese sammich on wheat with all the veggies. Pretty good. I then found a loaf of bread for sale and read the ingredients. SUGAR!!!! Shit's in everything. To be a smart-ass I got my husband a COLOSSAL chocolate/cream cheese kolache the size of a dinner plate. So much for that. He ate the whole damn thing when I presented it to him at home. Didn't even flinch. I got some goat milk products near the register and love those. I didn't visit the store since I was in a coma from all the carbs I consumed. Pretty neat place to stop and visit. My usual round trip between Sugar Land and Austin when driving involes a pit stop at Hruska both ways. Yesterday on the drive back from Austin my wife and I decided to stop at Weikel's intead of Hruska due to the good reviews in Yelp. We brought sausage and cheese kolaches to try. The dough was sweeter than Hruska and sauage link was used intead of pan sausage as at Hruska. We liked it a lot. My wife also brought pecan log and pumkin pie to try at home. They were very good also. The coffee was good and cheap. Most important of all, the restrooms were clean. Hruska and Weikel have their own unique recipes of kolaches and we enjoyed both. So we can't pick one over the other. Our solution is to stop at Hruska on the way to Austin and stop at Weikel's on the way back to Sugar Land. read more

I live in Houston and a client brought in cherry shortbread bars during Christmas season. I don't like anything with fruit, but when I was offered to taste a small bit of these bar I was HOOKED. I placed an order a few days ago for the cherry shortbread and pecan bars to be shipped to me and nearly ate my fingers off eating one of each. Let me first say the packaging was perfectly sealed upon arrival. Mine were delivered via two day UPS and taste just as fresh as if I had walked in the store and picked them up. The bars are thick and well worth the $10 price. I started eating the cherry shortbread first having been familiar with how good it was. As I was becoming "full" I just had to push myself to try the pecan pie bars and MAN it was so good. Needless to say I had a tummy ache by morning but it was well worth it. I recommend that even if you don't live near this place, definitely consider placing mail orders you won't regret it. They have a variety of other options that I can't wait to try in the future. read more

It's true. Their cream cheese kolaches are crave-worthy. In fact, they are so good that I am giving Weikel's 5 stars based on the simple perfection of that item. It's the softest, richest, tender yeast bread (so yeasty sometimes that it's on the edge of fermented), topped with a sweet/slightly sour cream cheese filling. I've never found them to be out of stock, and I've been there at all times of the day. I always leave stuffed. I've tried the other items and I'd say they are mixed. They make a cottage cheese kolache which I like in spite of the fact that I find it odd--but I see no reason to try it again--I'll just stick with the cream cheese from now on. The fruit-flavored kolaches are nice, but the fillings seem like they probably come out of a can. The poppyseed strudel was actually kind of horrid, with a strong almond extract flavoring (so overpowering I could actually taste the alcohol from the extract...I had to throw the strudel away). The carrot cake was very good, with a nice moist crumb. I also like the pigs-in-a-blanket, but not as much as the cream cheese kolache. In the end, it boils down to: just get the cream cheese kolache. read more

My family and I have been coming here since late last year and each time we have had a good experience, so we couldn't personally understand why people are saying the bakery staff is rude. But then again, we've always been nice and they've treated us nice in return. We both discussed it and maybe thought that they may have seemed rude because they are always so busy and filling so many orders for so many. Also, maybe because they don't have a whole lot of workers behind the counter. But, our orders are as we've asked and everything is always very tasty and delicious. It's always a treat to come to Weikel's! We love the fruit kolaches, the sausage kolaches, banana loaves, homemade bread and daughter loves the cookies. We are excited for the Brenham location to open. Thank you Weikel's for making a great product! We will be back time and time again! read more

We have been coming to Weikel's bakery since they were in their original building and it's sad to say today will be our last. We stopped in to order a sandwich and decided to pick up kolaches. We paid for it by the bakery register. We were waiting for our sandwiches and I put the kolaches in the bag. There was an older woman walking around and saw me do this. Our order was called we picked it and walked out of the store. The cashier ran after us to see our receipt for the kolaches we showed it to her and told her we didn't steal them. Make sure you always take your receipt with you because this may happen to you. My husband and I are in our late 60's and never had this happen talk about feeling awful. read more

No trip back from Austin is really complete unless you stop by Weikel's Bakery and pick up some of their Texas-famous kolaches. They've upgraded the storefront to look like one of those mega-gas stations. I suppose you can blame the Buc-ee's cult for that phenomenon. I miss the old wooden shack that used to house Weikel's, but the new place still has the same old awesome kolaches. The cream cheese is my all-time go-to, but they have a surplus of fruit-flavored bad boys that taste just as good. My dad is a sucker for the honey bee rolls, which aren't too shabby as well. Pick up a six-pack, and your stomach will thank you for a delicious breakfast all week long. read more

The word "Bakery" caught my eye while driving down 71 on my way back from Austin. I almost killed some animals while swerving to the exit lane, but honestly I think it would have been worth a few animals' lives. Just a few miles north of Hruska's (which was my next stop), but not too many people know about or have heard of Mikiel's. In my opinion, I think they should join forces and take over the world with Kolaches. It's in a gas station but DON'T LET THAT FOOL YOU. You walk in and there's fresh baked goodness everywhere. Cinnamon rolls, cookies, kolaches, pies, nomnomnom. But I digress.. For the sweet kolaches, anything with cream cheese is zzzing! I tried the Cherry Cream Cheese kolache. Still soft and warm, and sprinkled with butter crumbles on top. Their savory kolaches aren't as good as Hruska's, but I think I like the sweet kolaches here better. Again, these are not like Shipley's kolaches.. these are more open-faced and rustic, much like Hruskas. read more

Down a star...since Weikel's has gone 'Megaplex' with its huge new remodeled store, I think the service and kolaches have suffered a bit. I still stop her on the way to Houston. There are more gasoline pumps but fuel prices are higher by 10-15 cents/gallon than nearby stations. Lots of Chinese low-wage goods and tchotckes for sale in the 'Clothing' area of the new huge store. :-( read more

Am I doing it wrong? I am one of those people from not-central Texas and hadn't heard of kolaches before my cousin gave me one from Kolache Factory in Houston. Tasty! Like a little bao, but with King's Hawaiian bread, and filled with random stuff. Why don't we have these in California?? So the next day, on my drive from Houston to Austin, I thought I'd stop at Weikel's because of all the reviews. Apparently the sweet kolaches are the things to get here. I really did enjoy them- got the cream cheese, cherry-cream cheese, chocolate, and blueberry- but they also sort of just taste like danishes from the store? I guess I wanted to SUPER LOVE them but I just liked them instead. Maybe I should've gone for the savory ones. In other news, the bathrooms/rest of the store really are great, and the gas was reasonably priced to boot! I didn't know what I wanted when I walked up to the counter, so I just asked the woman what the most popular was: "cream cheese". Okay, one of those. Then... hm... "do you want chocolate?" Oh! Great! Okay then! Thank you, kolache lady! She chose all my flavors for me, which was awesome. Definitely I'll stop by again (and try Hruska's too) and try the savory ones. read more

Road trippin' from Beaumont to Austin multiple times a month, we discovered Weikel's last year and are hooked!!!! Being former Bucees customers, we got tired of the crowds and "fast food" and decided to give Weikel's a try. Best decision EVER!!! Love the clean restrooms & nice gift selection but hands down the best thing there is PIE!!! My personal fav is chocolate and don't get me started on the tasty meringue on them! To die for!!! I knew you can buy entire pies if you call ahead (did this for our family Christmas - big hit!) Today I stopped in and was helped by Kellie, amazing employee - and she told me they actuallly have an online order form that you can save 10% off your purchase if you use - good tip! read more

We always stop in to pick up at least one cream cheese kolache when we visit family, the are never a disappointment. My husband also loves the cinnamon rolls. To this day I get upset that people outside of La Grange, Texas, don't know a kolache from a pig in a blanket. *Insert HUGE sigh here*. To make matters worse, I noticed that there is even a product carried in the grocery stores now with a label saying "kolaches", when they are those little coctail sausages wrapped in bread. PEOPLE...those are NOT--I repeat--NOT kolaches...not even close. The closest thing to that little frozen concotion is a pig in a blanket...still not anything like the real deal, either. If you're wondering what a kolache actually is, and likewise, a pig in a blanket, and you find yourself somewhere on 71 & 77, exit and stop in at Weikel's...it's worth the extra 5-10 minutes. Having grown up in LG, my family went out to Weikel's every weekend and got kolaches and pigs. My favorite thing Weikel's sells (if y'all aren't from LG and stop in), are the ham with pepper jack (yum), and the sausage with jalepeno/cheddar. They're both in the same bread used in the pigs--amazing. Trust me, you won't find anything like these anywhere else...I know, because I moved away 11 years ago and have traveled extensively. Not even in other small towns (one of which located on I-35:) that claim a German/Czech bakery will you find such delicious homemade goodies. It's a dang good thing I don't live in LG anymore or I'd have to work out all day long to even attempt keeping off the weight I gain just from smelling the stuff. Every time I am back in LG I get nostalgic for two sausage and cheese, and a chocolate milk. I always end up leaving weikels with more than I came in for. Everythings great, the bread, the sandwiches....the cream cheese kolaches. If still lived in Texas I would weigh at least 20 more pounds. People of the world please stop by weikels for some education on kolaches. I fear shipleys has destroyed the name by making people think it is a low quality weenie wrapped in bread....not even close, that shouldn't even be called a pig in the blanket. I stop by every time I am driving from Austin to Houston. Their pound cake, pecan bar and cheese danish are my favorite. I didn't care too much for their cookies so I don't get those. The bathrooms are nice and clean and the cashiers are real nice and personable. All in all great place to take a break. read more

It had been a few years since I stopped at Weikel's in LaGrange. The last time I stopped in was before the remodel, approximately around 2008. Being from Austin and living in Waco for a few years I have had the pleasure of enjoying many kolaches along vast stretches of TX highways. Much to memory, there must have been a reason I have not visited the bakery more often. The kolaches were nothing above average and the food that we ordered was nothing to write home about. If you are commuting between ATX and HOU, stop 10 minutes down the road at Hruskas. Ofcourse none of those places hold a candle to the Czech Stop in West, TX but that is far out f the way. Sandwiches ordered for take out; philly cheese, PB & J, Grilled Cheese. Also, nothing special there. My philly cheese did have a massive amount of bread and a few pieces of meat to go with it. What did surprise me about the bakery is the lack of friendliness of a mom and pop establishment. Apparently my daughter needs to know what she wants before ordering and cannot ask questions to the counter help. Bottom line: don't be fooled by this "family bakery", keep driving. read more

Unreal! This place is adorable and has THE best baked items anywhere. Prior to moving to Texas, I had never had a kolache - and they are amazing - but they are leaps and bounds more amazing from this place. The staff is quick and friendly and we haven't tasted one baked good that wasn't absolutely delicious. Additionally, they have breakfast tacos and other food items and a huge drink selection. The bathrooms are also nice and clean and well lit. If you are looking for a place to stop on a road trip - this is definitely the place. read more

Initially, we had strong appreciation for this establishment. We would frequent the kolaches and pigs and was a regular. over the past 2 years, our appreciation has waned. We now only very infrequently visit and have been very dissatisfied over the past few visits. The last visit culminated in buying a package of pigs which.. when we got home and warmed.. had very soggy bread on the bottom. I'm not talking a nice sausage runoff, i'm talking about WATER!!. it was inedible. The sausage inside (hatch chile) was absolutely terrible and even with a heavy helping of salt was inedible. On the bright side, the pumpkin kolaches (seasonal) were outstanding. Overall, i think this place still has good food. Their specialty breads (banana, pumpkin, etc) are always outstanding. Their kolaches are some of the best around. But, their savory menu needs a lot.. and i do mean a LOT of work. The final comment is that we have had some employees who were so outgoing, personable, and amazing.. but often we find more of an attitude that they are doing us a favor vs we patronizing their business as the favor. A little friendly, personable approach will go a long way to making customers feel welcome and willing to pay the prices they demand here. read more

I'm of Czech heritage and grew up eating Kolaches (pastries with a fruit filling) from local Czech bakeries. Austin has all kinds of great food but great Kolaches is one thing I have yet to find. If I'm ever near La Grange, I always stop and buy Kolaches here. They are very good and have all the traditional types of fillings as well as some non-traditional ones. Don't be fooled by the looks as it seems to be a gas station and convenience store. Go on it and each a couple of Kolaches. You won't be disappointed. read more

I discovered this gem years ago, and every time I'm out this far on 71, I HAVE TO STOP here for their Poppy Seed Rolls. Best I've ever had, and I've had 'em all over Texas. Like I've said, they are the Kolache Kings.. Because I don't have the chance to come here frequently, which is probably a good thing for my health, I stock up with an inexpensive assortment 6-pack. And a few extras fresh out the oven and into my watering mouth. If you like poppy seed rolls like I do, try their Poppy Seed Struedel. It's big and heavy, and they slice you off a chunk to sell it by weight. My eyes tend to get a little bigger than my stomach at this point and I end up with 2 pounds of poppy seed madness. I hope I don't get drug tested afterwards, because if there's any truth to that poppy seed muffin making you come up positive for opiates, then I'll be looking straight up smack-addled. The fruit and sausage varieties are excellent as well. I could spend all day here, eating the entire counter contents. Yes. I love them so. read more
