There are a couple places you must stop by if you're driving from Houston to Austin and this is one of them! My boyfriend, friendm and I tried their blueberry with cream cheese and chocolate with cream cheese kolaches! Both are delicious though I preferred the blueberry one. I was actually looking forward to their savory ones so much more as I do like savory snacks, but they had completely sold out by the time I got there. This is definitely a no frills type of place, but you can also buy bread, beef jerky, and other goodies. Their pastries that are close to the "sell-by" date in packages are sold for cheaper, so definitely a worthwhile purchase if you're headed to meet up with people or about to go home and can freeze them! read more

I told someone in Austin I'd be driving to Houston, and she urged me to stop at Weikel's Bakery in La Grange on my way. This seemed like sound advice, and I was happy to see that the place was easy to find, pretty much right off the freeway. Weikel's is a no-frills spot--it looked like a straight-up gas station convenience store, with the coffee to match, according to my husband. The bakery portion was off to one side, and it was attended by one employee, who helped me with polite efficiency. I couldn't decide what to get, so I walked away with three pastries: a sausage, jalapeño, and cheddar pig-in-a-blanket and peach and cherry cream cheese kolaches. There was a microwave right by the bakery counter, and I used it to zap the pastries so they became soft and warm. They were delicious. I loved the savory pig-in-a-blanket, which was super flavorful with a nice bit of heat. The flaky kolaches were both excellent. The peach was like a lovely little hand pie, and the cherry cream cheese was satisfyingly frosted and sweet. I was on my own eating these treats, and I came close to finishing all of them in one sitting. If you're passing through La Grange, don't miss Weikel's Bakery. You might not get fine coffee and atmosphere, but the kolaches and pigs-in-blankets are absolutely superb. read more

It's not for everyone, but I find myself strangely drawn to it. Ham & Cheese Kolache- 7.3/10 Exactly what you expect. Jalapeño Sausage & Cheese Kolache- 7.9/10 Probably my fave because it's just so satisfying! A nice juicy jalapeño sausage stuffed with cheese, wrapped in a fluffy sweet bread pillow. Do it. For more than a decade (at the old location and now that they've relocated to this new one), every time I'm heading to or from Austin, this has been a go to stop. IMHO I vote Weikels as THE OG #1 Kolache King. The difference? The bread! It's incredibly light and fluffy and has a slight sweetness that melds with both their savory and fruit based options. The reason for 4 instead of 5 stars... during my last visit the employee behind the counter ripped my Kolache in half when packaging my order and I ended up with one that was effectively in two separate pieces with the meat falling out... I mean, come on. I know it tasted the same but the amount of effort/care she put into just tearing my Kolache up and throwing it into what felt like an animal feed bag was a bit disappointing. You can tell that this place, like others, are suffering from lack of workers. However, they're doing their best! The pastries are pretty good and the staff that does show up is very kind. Those who are unfamiliar may be surprised to know that kolaches aren't always just bread + sausage; there are lots of fruit options! The bread here is so good - as the vessel of goodness, it has to be! It is hard to choose what to sample when you come here, so grab an assortment pack of the fruit type and then a couple meat varieties from the counter and you are set. A must stop on your way through La Grange. Locally made soup/dip mixes and pastas for sale. We always grab the Kluski egg noodles. Their bakery is famous for kolaches, bread, and honey bees (pecan cinnamon rolls). This stop we tried a sandwich from their deli. I got cold turkey on a Weikel bun and it was ok. My mom tried turkey on a croissant and had it toasted. Hers looked delicious! I'm trying that next time. You order your lunch at the deli counter and get a ticket. You can pay the ticket there or take it to the front with your groceries and pay there, then return your paid ticket to the pick up window to get your food. There's a little seating area inside and outside to enjoy your lunch or you can take it to go. This place is busy at lunch, but they keep up! read more

Short version: Super clean convenience store with a wide variety of bakery items. We stopped here late this afternoon on the way back to Austin after a brief road trip. While the kolache selection was limited, the apple and pineapple ones we brought home are sure to be a hit. I also appreciated the clean restrooms and the clean store overall. They have a great variety of fountain drinks and other convenience store items. And unlike some of the other big name stores, the prices are more than reasonable and fair. Definitely worth a stop, even though you have to get off of the freeway. read more

We always enjoy finding the types of kolaches we love but that are not always available elsewhere (e.g. cottage cheese). We also like that they have packaged items for easy to go purchases. We got there after lunch, so things might not have been as fresh but the only thing I loved was the lemon bar. The pecan roll wasn't tasty. The apricot strudel was okay. The reason to stop here: KOLACHES. I've stopped here three times on the way to/from Austin from Houston. I really like their sweet bread on their sausage kolaches (pigs in a blanket). I try to remember to stop there to get a few as a snack, it's always a welcome break! Make sure to get a pack of them for later, you'll be kicking yourself if you don't. I've tried their cookies and they are some of my husband's favorites. He says they are very very buttery, just like he likes them. The sour cream kolaches get rave reviews from others, but I guess they just aren't my thing. I got a 6 pack, ate one and left the rest to sit there. I do like their cinnamon rolls, but make sure to get the fresh ones. The previously frozen ones just aren't as good. Everything there is better fresh. Get there early to get the best selection and watch out for bees in the parking lot trash cans. read more

I came here while staying in La Grange for Texas Antique Week. It was about 8pm on a Saturday and most of the kolaches in the case were sold out. This peaked my interest... they must be good! So, I ordered the sausage, cheese and jalapeño kolaches and a cream cheese kolache. The staff were not particularly helpful or friendly. But, they got my order right. It cost about $3 for the two kolaches, which is slightly cheaper than West, Texas at the Czech Stop. My husband and I are die-hard Czech Stop enthusiasts. We live, breathe and over order kolaches by the dozen. So, I made sure bring my purchases from Weikel's home to Dallas, so we could indulge together. The sausage, cheese and jalapeno was good. I was surprised that I liked it as much as I did. However, the jalepeno and cheese is actually INSIDE of the sausage -- which is different that the Czech Stop. The sausage had a nice snap. Still, I prefer Czech Stop. This is a solid runner up. The cream cheese kolache was pretty comparable to Czech Stop. In fact, it might have been a little larger and a little cheaper, here. My hubby and I would still choose Czech Stop over Weikel's. But if we were in La Grange, we would stop for a snack, and order our dozen kolaches to-go at Czech Stop on the way home. read more

Okay, so driving from Houston to Austin, there are lots of routes and places to stop, and this time I was making the trip with a friend who suggested we skip stopping in Katy and wait until La Grange instead. What a fantastic idea because we landed at Weikel's Bakery. First of all, this has all the pluses of a great road trip stop-off: Clean and private bathrooms, lots of cold drink selections, gas pumps, and grass to walk a dog. But on top of all of these highlights, you also get a chance to ponder what you want to choose from a glorious bakery selection. There were cookies, kolaches, cupcakes, bars, and more. I tried the chocolate kolache, and O.M.G. It was divine! I also had a rice krispy treat, and it was the perfect mix of marshmallow and sugar. Weikel's also has a whole section of gift areas, including some yummy smelling lotion at the counter. The only reason I didn't give it 5 stars is that they were so busy on a Sunday at lunch, it was about 10 minutes to check out. My friend said it was busier than normal. I will be back again to add to their crowd! read more

Great Stop on the way out of Town From Manor, Tx...This is located in a Gas Station, so truly a one stop shop and the Family business dates back to 1929 where it all started. The have a huge variety of items including a hot breakfast menu. Service was great and super friendly. They have seating indoor and out. Our stop was quick for a bite of breakfast as were were Road Tripping to the Coast. We grabbed a few breakfast tacos...and there definitely hit the spot. Good size for the price and filled us up. Headed to Austin Texas from Houston we noticed a billboard for a place called Weikel's Bakery and decided that it was time for a treat. We got off on the exit and went to the left and found the place. It was pretty busy. They actually have a deli, bakery and they sell gas. When we got in there the bakery area was full of goodies. Just about anything you could imagine from a high end German bakery. Deli items looked yummy as well! We all quickly found several items to satisfy our sweet tooth. Everything was excellent. Prices were very fair. The staff was very friendly. Parking was easy. I've been coming here since I was little and have always been happy. However the last few times I've visited, I've been put off by the workers. Today I went in, with my kids, and when I would order something at the kolache/cookie counter, the worker would interrupt me and acted like I was bothering her by ordering. When I tried to order something extra she stated "I THOUGHT you said that was it!!" Umm, excuse me??? I'm a paying costumer. Another place to stop that also has clean bathrooms (hear that Buccee's). Although I must say it's not as big as Buccees. They have a deli and bakery which looks pretty good. Plus there's a store inside a store which specializes in women's clothing, candles, soap and children's toys. Weikel's another stop on the list on Highway 71 if you don't want to deal with Buccee's or Hruska's which are always crowded. By the way, it's in the Shell station, it may be hard to find at first. read more

Wow. First timer here and I have had kolaches before. These are by far the best. The sausage jalapeño nod cheese infused kolache is fantastic. The dough used for roll. Super soft. Plus a touch of sweetness. The ham pepper jack kolache is a smoked rolled piece of deli inside the soft sweet roll. Really good highly recommend the stop if you're in the area. read more

Do you remember the movie Forrest Gump where Forrest and his friend Bubba were talking about shrimp? Bubba talked or five minutes about the various ways to cook shrimp. Well...Weikel's has about the same number of fruit kolaches. After visiting the extremely clean restrooms, I went over to the kolache counter and looked at the long list of kolache types. I ordered a cream cheese and peach kolache, but it was a Sunday afternoon, and they were out. I did get a regular peach kolache, and it was delicious. The bread was light and sweet...perfect snack. Weikel'a also has tasty cookies. Expect the same products for sale as Buc-ees...Texas preserves, nuts, jerky, candy, etc. We grabbed a package of sausage and cheese kolaches from a display rack and took them home to eat the next morning. They were still fresh and delicious the next day. My wife prefers nearby Hruska's in nearby Ellinger, but I like Weikel's. Although I am a Buc-ees fan, it is nice to see a worthy alternative in LaGrange. I can't wait to go back to try a different kolache. read more
