Overall I would give this place a 3/5 stars. Huevos rancheros- disappointed it wasn't the traditional salsa bandera (onion, tomato, Jalepeno) but it was good. Different twist with the rib with eggs. The chips were soggy when I got my food. I liked the red onions, it added a little kick to the food on top of what the food offers to begin with. 6/10 Eggs over medium- not too runny how I like it. Velvety, the eggs weren't burnt crispy and was delightful. Meat was umami, savory and tender. Different than what I expected, had a little kick of spice. Beans were dry and bland. Not very impressed. 3/10 Pancakes were okay. A little dry for my taste but they were fluffy. The syrup with it was tasty. 5/10. Good food, spoiled by bad service. We have been curious about this place ever since we stopped and talked to the person seating people while we were waiting for our reservation across the street. He mentioned a pickle martini, which I ordered at lunch and was very good. My wife ordered the welcome burger and enjoyed it except for them getting the toppings wrong. Our granddaughter really liked her mac and cheese and there was a generous serving of sliced fruit. And my Jose Burger had just enough spice and was very tasty. That what's the good. So we stopped here for lunch on a Friday about 12:30 with our 3-year-old granddaughter. Our initial server barely said two words to us and we felt like we were an imposition. When we ordered my wife asked did they have Pepsi or Coke products he said we have bottles and cans of everything, so she ordered a Coke. It was Mexican Coke which is fine, but $5, and it wasn't until we noticed other people had cans of regular Coke and realized he did not give us a choice. When we ordered our burgers, again he barely said two words and did not ask us how we wanted them cooked even though the menu says cook to order. When we got them they were very rare, see the picture, which we're okay with although we would have ordered them a little more done. My wife said no onions on hers, and of course there was onions on her berger. Later we were served by a waitress who was much more friendly and we realize was probably just not there yet when we sat down, so the initial waiter didn't really care what we thought since we weren't going to be his customers at the end. So sadly what could have been a very pleasant lunch was spoiled by the initial waiter, even though the food was good we may not be back. read more

I just ate the best breakfast I've had in Phoenix. I'm not kidding. On a whim I crossed seventh street and found a very hip corner in the Garfield district. I have been wanting to check out the welcome diner and it's a quiet weekend in Phoenix so here we go. First, it was busy; I'm guessing it typically is. We found our favorite bar spot quickly though and got to it. You get a great view of the chefs hard at work when sitting here and the show was awesome. Old school diner meets modern culinary fare (chicken livers are the first thing on the menu) and these gentlemen were putting in the work! Watching them put together chicken fried steak, perfect eggs, the best breakfast potato's I've ever had and more was a treat. It also made for some serious anticipation and I was not disappointed. Best chicken fried steak in town I would bet money on it. Potatoes roasted and seasoned to perfection and a melt in your mouth biscuit served with homemade jam. Solid 4. Here's the honest truth. I was a solo diner and sat at the bar. I was approached when my order was taken and when I paid my bill. Service was friendly - just not attentive. I ordered the chicken biscuit and some fries. The taste was good. I would recommend giving wet naps with the meal (like a barbecue place) because my hands were so so sticky with honey. I miss the Tucson location so much that I make it a point to stop by the Phoenix location when I'm in the area. This one is a cozy spot tucked into an old downtown neighborhood. My go-to order is always the Big Jim. The gravy is flavorful, and the chicken is juicy and cooked perfectly every time. My only gripe is it's pricy. $18 for the Big Jim that doesn't even have an egg on it, plus a side salad that's just greens with vinaigrette, doesn't feel like a great value.
