Good food, spoiled by bad service. We have been curious about this place ever since we stopped and talked to the person seating people while we were waiting for our reservation across the street. He mentioned a pickle martini, which I ordered at lunch and was very good. My wife ordered the welcome burger and enjoyed it except for them getting the toppings wrong. Our granddaughter really liked her mac and cheese and there was a generous serving of sliced fruit. And my Jose Burger had just enough spice and was very tasty. That what's the good. So we stopped here for lunch on a Friday about 12:30 with our 3-year-old granddaughter. Our initial server barely said two words to us and we felt like we were an imposition. When we ordered my wife asked did they have Pepsi or Coke products he said we have bottles and cans of everything, so she ordered a Coke. It was Mexican Coke which is fine, but $5, and it wasn't until we noticed other people had cans of regular Coke and realized he did not give us a choice. When we ordered our burgers, again he barely said two words and did not ask us how we wanted them cooked even though the menu says cook to order. When we got them they were very rare, see the picture, which we're okay with although we would have ordered them a little more done. My wife said no onions on hers, and of course there was onions on her berger. Later we were served by a waitress who was much more friendly and we realize was probably just not there yet when we sat down, so the initial waiter didn't really care what we thought since we weren't going to be his customers at the end. So sadly what could have been a very pleasant lunch was spoiled by the initial waiter, even though the food was good we may not be back. read more

Solid 4. Here's the honest truth. I was a solo diner and sat at the bar. I was approached when my order was taken and when I paid my bill. Service was friendly - just not attentive. I ordered the chicken biscuit and some fries. The taste was good. I would recommend giving wet naps with the meal (like a barbecue place) because my hands were so so sticky with honey. Sitting at the bar gave me a window on the kitchen. Can't say I loved seeing the eggs for deviled eggs had a 2/28 label on the container and it was 3/6. Wanted to try this spot again since it's been a few years now since my first visit. I decided to try the French toast, and I added the berry compote for a couple dollars more. The French toast was pretty dry, it definitely needed moisture, so I'm glad I added the compote and a lot of syrup. The fries were solid, I also got the prickly pear lemonade. Our waiter recommended the Mac and cheese with the chorizo and it did not disappoint. One of the best I've found in Arizona so far. The Gravy is so good!!!!!! I normally don't like biscuits and gravy but the gravy here is so good. The staff here is super attentive and friendly. I miss the Tucson location so much that I make it a point to stop by the Phoenix location when I'm in the area. This one is a cozy spot tucked into an old downtown neighborhood. My go-to order is always the Big Jim. The gravy is flavorful, and the chicken is juicy and cooked perfectly every time. My only gripe is it's pricy. $18 for the Big Jim that doesn't even have an egg on it, plus a side salad that's just greens with vinaigrette, doesn't feel like a great value. The ambience was incredible and unique and our server, Allison, was the SWEETEST person ever. We both got the happy hour welcome burger and a plate of fries to share. When we got there, there was a wait for a table inside, so we sat at the counter. This turned out to be pretty cool, because we could watch them cooking up the food. They really have it down to an art. When the cook cut my sandwich in half, some of the delicious filling squeezed out. I could have kissed him because he scooped up the wayward filling and put it right on my plate, instead of just leaving it there and wiping it away. The food here is so, so, so good. It's not light, heart healthy fare, but it doesn't matter because it is so, so, so good. I had the chicken melt, which is a chicken salad (not your typical chicken salad) on buttered, grilled Noble bread with cheese, lettuce and tomato. My son had the Big Jim, a huge piece of boneless fried chicken topped with bacon, cheese, and delicious sausage gravy sandwiched between a biscuit--a biscuit that was cut in half, buttered and grilled. Tried out Welcome Diner for a weekday dinner. The atmosphere and menu selections did not disappoint. Situated in the Garfield district, Welcome Diner is located within a residential neighborhood with only street parking options. Luckily we had no issues securing a spot out front. The menu has a nice array of vegetarian and meat-loving selections. We tried the fried green tomato sandwich and the Big Jim chicken sandwich with a fried egg. The fried green tomato sandwich unfortunately lacked flavor and there was barely any chipotle ranch on the bread. Even adding hot sauce couldn't resuscitate the sandwich, luckily the paired Mac n cheese was creamy and delicious. The Big Jim was doused in gravy, so no flavor lacking there! The portion was large and came with a heaping of fries. Overall the service was attentive and the restaurant has a fun vibe. I'm not ready to give up on this place just yet! Arrived to this spot after a long drive. I had glanced the menu over before arriving and didn't have time to call. I was just hoping they had fried green tomatoes! As soon as we walked in, staff was super welcoming , we were greeted and seated quickly. It brings down the temp quite a bit and makes it comfortable to seat outdoors. Many jars and old fashioned memorabilia decorate the place. The counter seating it's where it's at. You get to see all the magic behind the cooking action take place. I debated between an old fashioned burger once it was time to order but stuck to my original plan of the fried green tomatoes. I had the sandwich with the salad. Green tomatoes were perfectly breaded and seasoned and the bread got this sandwich was toasted yet very chewy inside, just right. The bread had this Succotash tangy sweet spread that brought out the sweetness of those fried green tomatoes. I enjoyed my sandwich very much. We also got an order of the poutine fries. They were smothered in country gravy. They fries were tasty but I think we should have ordered their biscuits and gravy instead. I was pretty full, servings are good size. I didn't think I'd get desert but I was eying their pies as soon as we walked in and they were running low from what I saw but hoped they had more in the back. Still, I decided to go for it and was able to snag a slice of that chocolate bourbon pecan pie! Oweeee, that was sooooo good.
