Photo of Antonio who gave bad service found on their Instagram page. Pathetic.

** 1 STAR ABSOLUTELY HORRIBLE SERVICE. NEVER AGAIN!!!!!** If I could give zero stars for service, I would. My friends and I are five women of color visiting from California, and we decided to stop at Welcome Diner around **8:07 PM** because it looked like a cute spot to grab some food. Unfortunately, what we got was an experience that made us feel anything but welcome. Our server, Antonio had an attitude from the start and acted like doing his job was an inconvenience. The restaurant was NOT busy, so there was absolutely no excuse for how poorly we were treated. We ordered mac and cheese, fried chicken livers, two steak frites, a grilled cheese with tomato soup, and Brussels sprouts. By 8:53 PM, we STILL had not received our food. I politely asked Antonio where our order was, especially since the restaurant closes at 9 PM. Meanwhile, a group of approximately six WHITE men who arrived AFTER us had already received their food. Then a single customer who came in around 8:30 PM also got their food before our table. At that point, we were sitting there watching everyone else eat while wondering what exactly was happening with our order. Then our food finally comes out--and guess what? **THE STEAK FRITES WERE COLD. LITERALLY COLD TO THE TOUCH.** So we waited forever just to receive food that clearly had been sitting somewhere instead of being brought to our table. And again, the restaurant wasn't even busy. I told Antonio the steaks were cold and that I didn't want them. I asked him to take BOTH steaks back and simply remove them from the bill. His response? "You guys want a free steak." No. We wanted the food we ordered to be served properly. I repeated that I didn't want the steaks and just wanted them removed from the bill. His response: "More for us." EXCUSE ME?! literally WTF. After already receiving terrible service, waiting nearly an hour for our food, watching other customers who arrived after us get served first, and then receiving cold food, THAT was his response? That comment was incredibly disrespectful and completely unnecessary. It turned an already terrible experience into an absolutely unacceptable one. And somehow it gets even better: THE BRUSSELS SPROUTS WE ORDERED NEVER EVEN CAME OUT. And as five women of color, sitting there watching groups of other customers who arrived after us receive their food while we continued waiting, the treatment absolutely gave us the impression that something was off. I'm not going to tell anyone else what their intentions were, but i know how the experience made us feel, and it did not feel welcoming. We were visiting from California and were genuinely excited to try this place. Instead, we left feeling disrespected and completely disappointed. Welcome Diner? More like Welcome... if you're willing to tolerate terrible service. Management needs to seriously rethink how customers are being treated and retrain Antonio on basic customer service, professionalism, and how to speak to paying customers. Management itself needs to learn how to properly handle a customer complaint instead of standing by while the situation gets worse. We came for dinner. We got cold food, missing food, an attitude, and disrespect. Never again

I just ate the best breakfast I've had in Phoenix. I'm not kidding. On a whim I crossed seventh street and found a very hip corner in the Garfield district. I have been wanting to check out the welcome diner and it's a quiet weekend in Phoenix so here we go. First, it was busy; I'm guessing it typically is. We found our favorite bar spot quickly though and got to it. You get a great view of the chefs hard at work when sitting here and the show was awesome. Old school diner meets modern culinary fare (chicken livers are the first thing on the menu) and these gentlemen were putting in the work! Watching them put together chicken fried steak, perfect eggs, the best breakfast potato's I've ever had and more was a treat. It also made for some serious anticipation and I was not disappointed. Best chicken fried steak in town I would bet money on it. Potatoes roasted and seasoned to perfection and a melt in your mouth biscuit served with homemade jam. It was wonderful and surreal simultaneously. Our hostess was charming and greeted us with a huge, infectious smile. Am I coming back?? Silly question. The chef even complimented my hat! A nice reminder that the Welcome Diner, like myself, is LOCAL! Do not miss.

If you're looking for a diner with fresh food, great vibes, and excellent accessibility, Welcome Diner is definitely worth a visit! One thing I always pay attention to is accessibility, and Welcome Diner does a great job. They offer accessible parking, a ramp for easy entry, accessible seating options, and accessible restrooms. It's always nice to find a place that makes dining comfortable and welcoming for everyone. The diner offers both indoor and outdoor seating, and the patio is pet-friendly for those who enjoy bringing their furry friends along. Parking is available in the back of the restaurant, with additional street parking nearby. The atmosphere is a fun blend of retro and hipster charm. Inside you'll find cozy booths, tabletops, accessible seating, and even a disco ball that adds a unique touch to the space. Despite being a popular and often busy spot, the environment remains relaxed and not overly loud, making it easy to enjoy your meal and conversation. What really stood out to me was the freshness of the food. Welcome Diner proudly supports local vendors and sources ingredients from Arizona farms and businesses, and you can absolutely taste the difference. Everything we ordered was fresh and flavorful! We tried: The Lil Birdy Chicken Biscuit Brussels Sprouts The Big Jim Every dish was delicious. The Lil Birdy Chicken Biscuit and Brussels Sprouts were part of the Happy Hour menu and were only $5 each, making them an incredible value. The Big Jim was over $14 and was hearty, satisfying, and packed with flavor. At first, we were a little surprised by some of the menu prices, but once we discovered their Happy Hour specials, it made a lot more sense. Happy Hour is available: All Day Tuesday Monday-Thursday from 3 PM-6 PM Friday & Saturday from 10 PM-Close The staff was friendly, attentive, and helped make the experience even better. Overall, Welcome Diner is a family-friendly restaurant with fresh locally sourced food, great accessibility features, a fun atmosphere, and excellent Happy Hour deals. Definitely a spot I'd visit again!

I have been a few times in the past but realized they moved and upgraded on my latest visit. Same great retro diner feel with yummy burgers, fries, and sandwiches. Cute for a date night in the downtown area or with family/friends. Service was great and helpful, and our picky eater gives it two thumbs up! We will be back

My husband and I stopped by during happy hour... loved the atmosphere, service and food. Will definitely return. $1 beer can't beat that. The brussel sprouts were delicious!!!

Welcome Ginger Beer (more of a ginger lemonade, still excellent!)

In a word: amazing. Fantastic food, great service, and killer vibe. Everything we ate was awesome - from the Caesar salad to the fried green tomatoes sandwich to the house made ginger lemonade, all were excellent. Vibe was throwback at 100%. Would definitely recommend! Also great for kids!

Solid 4. Here's the honest truth. I was a solo diner and sat at the bar. I was approached when my order was taken and when I paid my bill. Service was friendly - just not attentive. I ordered the chicken biscuit and some fries. The taste was good. I would recommend giving wet naps with the meal (like a barbecue place) because my hands were so so sticky with honey. Sitting at the bar gave me a window on the kitchen. Can't say I loved seeing the eggs for deviled eggs had a 2/28 label on the container and it was 3/6. Also - the "Mac" for the Mac and cheese was cooked and came out of a bag. Would return. Probably would order something different.

We are visiting from out of town and found the Welcome Diner from a Tiktok. It did not disappoint! It was so good, we are considering going back two nights in a row! The service was amazing and the food was even better. The restaurant is small, so there was a wait. But it was worth it!

Absolutely incredible. The service was amazing everyone cares about what they do multiple staff checked on us and made us feel right at home. The food was incredible the sauce was so consistent and had such deep flavor profiles starting off as a beef gravy into a deep dive peppercorn and shallot. The steak was cooked perfectly and incredibly tender. Don't forget to order a biscuit it's almost got a sourdough taste and the jam they made was such an incredible compliment that flirted with deep sweet and tart flavors absolutely worth returning for alone. The small diner feel and the fact that it was nestled in a small family neighborhood made it feel like a true hidden gem. I'll definitely be coming back. As a former server and cook these are the places I love to visit.

Love it here, lovely environment. It looks like it came straight from a A24 film. Incredibly peaceful and great service and food. I love diners and this will be one I remember. They also sent me home with a postcard, so thanks!

Stopped by for dinner and tried the burger off of a recommendation from a friend. Satisfying food, really hit the spot! Service was great. The misters outside were refreshing as we waited for our table.

Great authentic southwest diner atmosphere, busy for a reason everything in house made with a fresh taste. highly recommend the chilaquiles and Brussels sprouts, the prickly pear lemonade not too sweet either!

    Valerie C.

Wanted to try this spot again since it's been a few years now since my first visit. I decided to try the French toast, and I added the berry compote for a couple dollars more. The French toast was pretty dry, it definitely needed moisture, so I'm glad I added the compote and a lot of syrup. The fries were solid, I also got the prickly pear lemonade. It was very sweet, tasted like candy. I did think the prices were high for what you actually get.. I liked the atmosphere and the staff was friendly.

Come Saturday evening, we thought our son would fly in early enough, on his way back from North Carolina, to take him to Lon's restaurant at the resort. Unfortunately, due to delays he was not able to make it to the resort until after ten. By that time, most restaurants are closed for the evening!!! After a quick search, apart from the traditional 24/7s, we spotted the 5 & Diner, and it was close enough to get there within ten minutes! When we drove up, we were mildly surprised, a little retro, a restaurant we are not used to...upon entering the establishment, the staff was prompt, friendly, and we were seated in a nice booth right away. Our server, Danielle A was extremely helpful with the menu items, wonderfully cheerful, prompt on our orders, and could not have been more attentive!!! The food was well prepared, hot, very flavorful, and timely!!! We were extremely surprised and found this restaurant checked all of the boxes...not to mention surprisingly reasonable!!! By the way, the air conditioner was set at a perfect temperature for the triple digits of Phoenix!!! We would go back again!!! Humbly and respectfully, FLK

It arrived with a bun and no lettuce wrap. My husband ordered the Southwest Burger and paid for an extra patty, but received only one. For our three children, I ordered three Short Stacks but received only two. I also ordered two orders of scrambled eggs with turkey sausage but received only one, and I ordered bacon with sunny-side-up eggs but received only the bacon. I alerted the dasher, who returned to the restaurant and called me so I could explain what was missing. Unfortunately, the employee I spoke with was extremely hostile and rude. They insisted that I hadn't ordered the third Short Stack and repeatedly said they only make what's on the ticket. I explained that my screenshot showed the order I placed and that, unfortunately, the ticket apparently didn't contain my entire order. What bothered me most was the attitude. I was treated as though I was asking them to give me something for free, even though I had already paid for these items. I still made a point of expressing my appreciation for the dasher's help despite the way I was being spoken to. The employee responded with a sarcastic "thank you" and hung up on me. The dasher then told me that the restaurant refused to remake or compensate me for the missing and incorrect items, despite the dasher returning to the restaurant and waiting 10 minutes to try to resolve the issue. I didn't even mention the burger bun during the call because the interaction had already become so unpleasant. If the employee was simply having a bad day, I genuinely hope things get better for them. Mistakes happen, and I understand that restaurants can be busy. However, the combination of multiple missing and incorrect items, the refusal to correct or compensate me, and the way my concerns were handled made this an awful experience. Unfortunately, this is a hard pass for me. I wouldn't recommend ordering from here, and I won't be ordering again.

We LOVED our visit to Diner 50 and this is now my go-to breakfast spot downtown. Everything was perfection. We loved the art inside and outside, music, and vibe. Our server was warm, enthusiastic, and had immaculate timing. We appreciated how playful and passionate she was. I swear she knew the name of every guest who walked through the door, and asked them thoughtful questions about their loved ones or travels. This is obviously a place that people return to and become regulars at. An excellent sign. What we were not expecting (and SO DELIGHTED WITH) was the cat rescue space through the adjoining wall. We are all cat-obsessed, so walking in and seeing a room full of absolute sweeties playing around added 100,000 points to the experience. The coffee? Epic. Served in a nearly soup bowl sized cup (hot) or gigantic mason jar (iced). Diner coffee can sometimes leave much to be desired but this coffee was soooo delicious and strong. The food? So awesome. I went with a classic breakfast plate - eggs, sausage, potatoes, blueberry pancakes. I added a biscuit because the menu said they were homemade and I had to try it. It was exceptional, I would go back just for the sausage and biscuit and coffee. My coworker got the huevos rancheros with red and green sauce and I was massively jealous. Everyone left over-caffeinated with bellies full of delicious food and hearts warm from being so well taken care of by our lovely server and getting to play with kitties. The prices are fair, the food and coffee are delicious and homemade, and the service is exceptional. I am someone who really values being involved with my community, so I feel great about spending my money somewhere that is clearly beloved by my neighbors and pours back into them. Thank you Diner 50 for being such an unexpected delight!

Fast forward nine years to 1938, and Fred MacAlpine purchased it, renaming it for his namesake, and operating it as a full-service pharmacy and soda fountain until 1991. It was then purchased by a couple who still own it today and have kept it in as much of its original condition as possible, including the soda fountain, the counter, and the malt machine. When you park and walk to the front of the yellow building, you can't help but feel joy. The storefront windows, the antiques, all of it make you wonder just how far back in time you're going to travel. Once you've stepped foot inside and onto the checkered floor, you can't help but smile at the counter, all of the antiques from decades past, and the wait staff who wears 1950s uniforms. We slid into our wood booth with the tiny jukebox on the wall and immediately got to reviewing the extensive menu. Everything... and I mean EVERYTHING... looked good. Bonus: They have gluten-free bread! My husband chose the cheeseburger and I chose the turkey BLT (on gluten-free bread) - both were delicious! We then opted to share a mint chocolate chip milkshake that was created on the original 1940s machine - something that completed the experience. When we were done, we were fortunate enough to chat with Monica Heizenrader, co-owner of MacAlpine's wth her daughter. She is a very kind woman who is very passionate about keeping the history of this diner alive, even taking to selling antiques (in the other rooms of the building) to help support the upkeep. However, with rising costs and some family challenges, it's getting tough. She was proud to have kept this going as long as she and her family have and even mentioned some of the more notable people that have stepped into the diner over the decades, including Barry Goldwater (a regular), Joan Ganz Cooney (one of the creators of Sesame Street), Frank Lloyd Wright, Aunt Maud, Marshall Good, Wayne Newton (who was discovered by a talent scout there), and more! I'd say the sandwich was just average, however service was excellent with different people continuously checking on us. We were lucky enough to find this restaurant on Yelp, and it certainly didn't disappoint! From the…read moremoment we arrived, we were greeted at the door with a huge smile and seated immediately, even though the place was super busy. Our server was wonderfully bubbly, friendly, and gave great recommendations. I ordered the Al Pastor hash, and the unique combination of flavors was absolutely amazing. The owner even stopped by to check on us, making us feel genuinely welcome. My wife and I enjoyed our experience so much that we even bought some merch on our way out! If we're ever back in Phoenix, we will definitely be stopping by again. Keep up the great work!

Second -- CASH ONLY There is a Hawaiian inspiration/theme at the The OBH mixed with mexican flavors -- basically if you like a lot of meat with your breakfast then come here. When looking at other people's plates the portions looked very large -- the prices are average -- not cheap but not over the top. I did see someone with a cinnamon roll that looked pretty delicious. My mom had been here one other time and got the cinnamon roll pancakes, which she loved (and why we are here today) -- Nothing was speaking to me on the menu so I just ordered the classic OBH pancakes. I would give them about a 5/10 on the pancake scale. Also they didn't have real maple syrup even to purchase for extra -- they say their syrup is a maple syrup blend -- it wasn't full on plastic but it wasn't real maple syrup. I also ordered a side of scrambled eggs with cheddar -- it was a little runny and overall just average. The coffee was rank -- I would give it a 2/10. Our server was very friendly as was all of the other staff -- that is why I hate to only give 3 stars because it is a great local spot. When we left (around 9am) there was quite a long wait -- so you know it is very popular

That great first impression carried through the entire visit. Vince was an outstanding bartender. His cocktails were perfectly balanced, he was attentive without hovering, and he genuinely seemed to care that everyone was having a great experience. He was happy to answer questions, made great recommendations, and created such a welcoming atmosphere. Savannah was great too. The food was delicious, the service was exceptional, and the ambiance was exactly what I was looking for. If I could, I'd start every morning here. Vince truly made my day, and that's not something you can say about many places. 10/10 experience. I can't wait to come back!

Unfortunately, this visit was a huge disappointment. We arrived about an hour before closing and sat down as we normally do. While I was walking to the restroom, which is located past the kitchen area, I heard a server/bartender we've seen several times before ask the cook, in an obviously annoyed tone, if two people had just arrived. When he said yes, she responded, "Who the fuck!?" The cook then looked directly at me. At that point, I honestly felt extremely uncomfortable and wanted to leave. We decided to stay since my boyfriend had already ordered a beer, but the experience immediately felt different. We felt like our presence was an inconvenience simply because we came in an hour before closing. Unfortunately, the food didn't make up for it. We ordered the beef skewers and a burger. The skewers were okay, but they were not nearly as good as we remembered them being. The burger, however, arrived completely cold. What makes this especially disappointing is that we used to really enjoy coming here. We understand that being close to closing time can be frustrating for a restaurant, but customers should still feel welcomed, especially when they are coming in well before closing and have supported the restaurant in the past. We really hope this was just a bad night, because we genuinely used to love coming here. But after this experience, we unfortunately left feeling very disappointed.
