The lemonade were nice, but somewhat watered down for my taste. Service is helpful and polite, but when seated outside, note that you're getting up and ordering at the window and getting your own water, napkins, tableware, etc., so not exactly "full service," but none the worse for it. Our first stop when we arrived in Phoenix and we chose it by chance. The food was just so good. I had the grilled cheese, which I will think about for years to come! The bread was nice and crispy and the tomato jam is out of this world. Wish I could eat it every day! My kids had burgers and they raved about those. I will say this restaurant is very good in the category of good restaurants, the menu is limited so you have a selection of about eight things you can get. However, when you do order, you are surprised because it is very good food. The drinks are abundant. And the food is good portion. One thing that is a draw is that there is a good amount of wait time at any given time of the day, which is good for the restaurant but bad for the patrons.overall I would recommend this place as one of those places you have to try, but you may only try it one time because of the time and limited menu. 11/13/2022-Almost a year ago, we return to the Welcome Diner, this time for dinner. We were not disappointed! Our first time at the Welcome Diner we had brunch. Before we headed back to Yuma, our family decided to eat first. Our dinner choices were--a couple of burgers, a chicken sandwich, and a couple of fish and chips. I attached a copy of the menu (my apologies for the imperfect shots), as well as pictures of our food, for your reference. Delicious, delicious, delicious! Service was quick this time. It also wasn't that crowded at about 6 o'clock in the evening. It was nice to come for dinner, especially because the garden patio was illuminated by festive lights. I just loved the ambiance. Perfect for small groups like friends and families. And wouldn't be too bad of a choice for a nice, romantic dinner without trying too hard to impress. It's very rare for me to return to the same place for a meal. What with the many choices available around town! Having come here twice is a statement by itself. Late night find that was amazing! Flew into Phoenix, and staying downtown, needed something to eat and found this place about 9pm Friday evening. Super quirky yet inviting little diner that had a very welcoming vibe. We sat inside with wait staff, or there is a walk up window to place your order and sit outside. Ordered and our daughter wanted just a PB & J and the chef fixed her right up. Fast, fresh and delicious dinner followed up with yummy pie. Definitely will make our way there again! I love this place. Food is delicious, you can watch them cook if you sit at the counter. It's clean. What I don't like, is the guy (who says he is the manager). He's rude, and acts as if he is ruling a country,not running a hospitality business. I am handicapped, and unable to stand for long periods of time. He said out table would be ready in five minutes. After 15 minutes, I had to sit down at the empty counter. The party I was with, decided after 30 min to just sit at the counter. As we sat down, this guy comes up yelling loudly saying the counter is not for table waiting, and to Leave if we were not going to dine. I was mortified. I tried to explain we were going to dine at the counter, but he was talking over me, LOUDLY!! Almost like he wanted everyone to know he was the guy in charge. My favorite Yelp feature? Bookmarks! Are you using it? When you hear about a place that you must try, go to their Yelp page, hit Bookmark, and you've created your bucket list. The best part about it is how it sorts by distance. So when I'm out and about and want to try something nearby, I go to my bookmarks. And that leads me to Welcome Diner. I don't remember where I heard about it, but I added it as a bookmark, and then when I was nearby, I knew where I was going. #LifeHacks First and foremost, what a cool exterior. This whole place is just special. From the neighborhood to the vibe, this is a gem. Even if you don't decide to eat here, just go look at it. I was so surprised that Phoenix had something so retro hiding in a quiet neighborhood. Being from Albuquerque, it reminded me of a place there called Route 66 Diner, but this is more for the cool kids (wait till you see the staff). What I really liked about the design was that they didn't overdo it. Some retro eateries go overboard with Elvis and Marilyn Monroe cutouts to prove their yesteryear authenticity, but Welcome Diner does not need to do that. It is not overwhelming. Likewise, the outdoor patio is huge and inviting and I liked the help yourself water dispenser. The cocktails are GOOD. We tried the Moscow Mule and Old Fashioned and these were potent and expertly mixed. We refrained from dessert but the pies looked enticing. Service is distant but responsive. Where does Welcome Diner have room for improvement? Unfortunately, when it comes to the lunch/dinner menu, the food. When the so-called Welcome Burger arrived, it was not welcomed. Honestly, a McDonald's burger would be more filling and visually appealing and cheaper than this $10 greasebomb. The BLAT (Bacon Lettuce Avocado Tomato) was slightly better but I made the mistake of not upgrading to the sourdough which would have improved it immensely. The soft baguette was gross. The mac and cheese was unremarkable. Overall, these choices were largely uninspired. Having said that, the breakfast/brunch options look excellent and that is the next daypart I will choose when I come back. Honestly, when you have a location like Welcome Diner (and this is clearly part of the Phoenix tourist trail), they don't have a lot of motivation to improve the menu or culinary skills. I understand that. But just a few tweaks would make the food as excellent as everything else. Bottom line: come for the scene, the drinks, and likely brunch. read more

It took me so long to try this place out that I understand they moved from their original location into this new location. The building itself has a great modern diner vibe and plenty of outdoor seating. There are several booths inside and seats at the counter. I was a fan of the vibe. Three of us sat inside and took our time ordering. It was 5pm on Monday so it wasn't too crowded. Our server was nice and let us take our time after letting us know what the specials were. They have happy hour during the week from 5-7 with a few food and drink specials. The menu isn't too large but has a good mix of offerings. There were several items I wanted to try but I landed on the bumblebee biscuit (fried chicken, honey, beer mustard, pickles). It came with a small side of watermelon. I thought flavor wise it was great and it definitely hit the spot. My girlfriend got a welcome burger and fries and my friend got the champion burger with fries (bacon jam, cheddar, thousand island, tomato, arugula). It's a large portion of food. The fries are crispier which is my preference. They both needed to go boxes. Overall it's a cute spot and a solid menu. After bar hopping downtown this seemed like the ideal last stop. I originally had it on my mind because a FEZ employee recommended it to me and she was right, they've got some good stuff here. I had the "Big Jim" which comes with fried chicken, in-house gravy, bacon, biscuits, cheddar, and sausage. I wanted turkey bacon but they didn't have it so I opted for Andouille instead. They happily made the substitution. I loved it, especially their rich gravy and flakey biscuits. It also comes with a side of watermelon which satisfied my sweet tooth afterwards. My friend ordered the "Mac N Cheese" with brussel sprouts, and she liked hers as well. That one is huge and could easily serve 2. She could only finish 1/3 of it. What we especially loved was the service. We found everyone (particularly Marcus) to be extremely helpful and they anticipated everything we needed despite us coming in one hour before closing. We flew into Phoenix and had some time to kill before our hotel check in. We decided to have lunch, in which Welcome Diner was one of the first places listed. The place is one of those small neighborhood style diners. It's scorching during our visit I'm AZ, so we had lunch inside; they have a pretty large outdoor dining area setup that looked to be a nice options on a cooler day. The service was really good and the wait staff is super attentive. I ordered the No Way Jose hamburger cooked medium rare with a side of fries. The burger came out medium well, but was still pretty good. The beef patty was pretty thick and juicy for being a bit over cooked from what I was expecting; the peppers and the cheese complimented the beef well. The fries came with the meal and was perfectly crispy with a bit seasoning. The dish was served with two cubes of yellow watermelon, which was the perfect way to cleanse the palate when you are done with your meal. They have a few drink options where you can have them sparkling or even spiked for a few dollars more. I chose the regular Hibiscus Limenade, which was quite refreshing given the triple digit weather outside. The only issue I had with the Limenade is that the price charged for it didn't match what was printed on the menu. Prices may have gone up, and it was only a few dollars, but I was expecting what I saw on the menu. In any case, I didn't raise a fuss and we paid through the QR code option. The wait staff printed out a receipt for us without being asked, which was thoughtful. My coworker tried the PBB burger and said it was pretty good. I didn't want to take the risk of having a beef hamburger with peanut better smothered all over it. Overall, the food was pretty good and the wait staff was friendly and attentive, but this visit had a couple of small faults. read more
