Was in Wellfleet today and popped by the market. Impressed with the array items, especially the booze sections. Since it's the 50th Anniversary of JAWS they had both red & white versions of Chef Brody's table wine available and half racks of Narragansett Lager Beer which became a movie star in Jaws when Captain Quint crushed a can of "Gansett". The beer has since been re-released to commemorate the movie's anniversary.... Needless to say I grabbed some of that beer so I could lounge at the beach and crush cans after a single gulp. Now a very kind lady from the deli was sharing info on the boxes. You don't get that kinda assistance in the beer isle anymore. Oh ok back to the store. Well, after my JAWS excitement I noticed an amazing deli, damn I wished I was hungry. The rest of the market was stocked with normal daily life food items. That's it folks ! read more

Unfortunately, the prices are double or more than markets in Massachusetts. A package of oreos that typically costs 4.99 was 7.99. Ragu sauce thats usually 1.99 was 4.79. Very unpleasant experience with this store. The staff was full-on passive aggressive towards me with my 21-month old in a stroller. Tried the Reuben sandwich at the deli counter. Not bad. Ample meat. Good bread and Kraut. Not sure if included cheese. Very lightly toasted. I want my Reuben to have a higher level of grease, and this sandwich did not have much. But it was still pretty good, due to the generous serving of meat. And price was reasonable, especially given our location. This is a nice little store in general. Eclectic. Don't expect the price or selection of a suburban chain store. I am a person who values a good supermarket and I was very impressed with the quality and selection at the Wellfleet Market Place. I just spent some time reading many of the other YELP reviews and what astonished me is the negativity of many of the reviewers. I don't think people understand that it's tough to compete with the larger corporate supermarkets and still turn a profit. I was blown away by the amazing selection of everything from books, jigsaw puzzles to ice cream, wine and staples like every imaginable condiment you might need. I went there today in search of Dijon mustard and was pleasantly surprised by their selection. I also was impressed by their bakery, fresh breads and deli department. For a small town , the Wellfleet Market Place is a truly amazing store with everything from goofy gifts to frisbees and the New York Times. There also sell very cool socks with hungry sharks ready to take a bite out of your legs! I'm staying in Truro that has one store in their downtown that's closed on Thursdays! The great news is that this store is open every day til 7pm! Hurray! read more

The main thing going for this place that it's a market and it's in a convenient location. We were already in Wellfleet doing some hiking and needed some lemons, salad and pasta for dinner. The lemons were literally $1 each. Everything we saw in this store is at least 25% more than what you would pay at a regular store like Stop and Shop or Target. It's a lot like buying groceries in a convenience store, you're paying extra for the convenience. Also, it is not particularly clean. A redeeming feature for me is that they had a great selection of magazines and books. There are also some souvenir items although these too are very overpriced. Don't come here to do all your grocery shopping looking for bargains but when you need the odd item or two you can find it here quickly. They also have wine but there is a liquor store down the street with much better selection. read more

My family and I have been coming to Wellfleet for several years to meet up with cousins. This week an order was put in place requiring Rhode Islanders to provide proof of a negative Covid test before staying more than 24 hours. To try and salvage our traditional vacation, my family of five scrambled to travel over an hour to Providence to get a rapid test so that we were able to keep our reservations at the Southfleet Motor Inn which we had booked many months before. After receiving our negative test results the evening before our booking, we scrambled again to pack our bags and head to Wellfleet the next day for the three hour trip. Shortly after we arrived at Wellfleet we stopped at the marketplace to grab a few items, wearing masks as we are certainly required to do in our home state. We were soon verbally accosted by an older male worker who asked us where our gloves were. My husband, confused by the question, said I'm sorry gloves? The worker reiterated yes you need to be wearing gloves. I said to the worker that we were sorry but we were trying to get to know the rules and that we were from Rhode Island and not aware of the glove requirement. He then asked in an even more aggressive tone that if we were from RI had we quarantined. I responded that we were not required to quarantine due to the fact that we have been tested negative for Covid. And that had he been interested I had the results on my phone. I also firmly suggested that he stand down. This interaction occurred with other customers witnessing it as well as other workers. After the extremely upsetting incident I went to the front of the store and ask a young man working as a cashier to speak to the manager. He asked me what had happened and I explained the situation and seem to knowingly understand who I have the encounter with. When we approached the counter to check out the same young man gave us a discount as recognition of our experience. I am sharing this terrible experience in the hope that other visitors who are trying to support your economy and follow the rules are never treated the way we were by the worker at your market. A small market in a small town. Wellfleet is a a small, quiet town near the tip of Cape Cod. If you go up there and like to eat you go to this market, simply because of the fact that the alternative is not eating. There is nothing else nearby. I have the feeling if you went back in time one hundred years or so the market and people would look pretty much the way they look today. It store looks very small from the front but actually extends quite a ways so it has a lot of room inside. All the usually food items can be found here and the marketplace gets a nice selection of locally grown produce in the summer. They also have a nice little deli with fresh home made pastries, coffees and desserts. Great muffins and brownies to start your day. Books, magazines, greeting cards and a eclectic and idiosyncratic selection of touristy items can be found scattered through the market. Cheap plastic lobsters to cool jewelry and old photographs. Like the Cape Cod weather, the inside of the store is always unpredictable. It's a different sort of an experience wondering around one of these old markets. The nice wood floors under your feet and the smell of fresh produce and breads. Most people are very friendly and I have noticed that many people call me by my first name. Curious because not many people up there know my real name. So I get called Bill, Bob, John, Ralph, Igor and Sinclair. Just about everything but my real name. I guess up here if you don't know somebody you just call them by the first name that pops into your head. Quirky and odd but kind of nice. They have a good selection of non-corny souvenirs (eg books written by local authors, local food and drink.) The staff is brisk and to the point. They are often ridiculously busy and don't have time for a lot of chatter with tourists. If you don't see something, they probably don't have it. When will I learn? Apparently never. I broke my Market boycott off last week in a moment of need - I wanted soup, plain soup not clam chowder. Not a lot of choices in the area. While I was picking out my (way over salty, blech) turkey noodle soup at $5.99 a pint, I decided to make a stop at the deli counter and pick up some Boars Head roast beef for the weekend. What could happen to the always-delicious BH, right? Wrong - plenty at the Wellfleet Market. You know the chippy bits of deli ham or turkey that you can buy at Stop & Shop or Shaw's for reduced price? The ends of the big pieces that they sell for $3 or $4 off the full price? This roast beef was like that, Bits and pieces, hacked off half slices ranging from an inch long to about 5 inches, not one single full slice. Other than the hack job, knit cap guy had also apparently turned the end to make it easier for him to handle, so it was cut across the grain- have you ever had deli roast beef that was too tough to chew??? We've all been there. Forgotten an ingredient for dinner and we refuse to make the drive down to Orleans Stop & Shop. Somehow, I am continually shocked with how poorly the store operates every time I go in. You'd think it'd get better... Most recent visit? Eight lemons were in a bag. The woman at the counter said "Seven?". I was fumbling through my tote for my wallet and I agreed with her because I presumed that was correct -- I didn't count how many I took. Then, she decided to scold me when she realized there was eight. My apologies, your inability to count is not my responsibility. It's also a single lemon. Horrific deli. Poor restocking efforts. An absence of a clear place to stand in line for the registers, often leading to widespread confusion. I cannot tell you how much I miss the South Wellfleet General Store. Wellfleet Market is the only local general market in Wellfleet. One can get fish and produce across the street at Hatches. There are a variety of convenience stores on Rt. 6. Large supermarkets are in Orleans (20 minutes south) or Provincetown (25 minutes north). It is best to stock up at the large supermarkets and only get urgently needed items locally. I find the Cumberland Farms excellent for breads, milk, ice cream, premade foods (sandwiches, salads, etc). BTW, Cumbies doesn't upcharge just because this is a vacation spot. Wellfleet Market prices are 50 to 100% higher then a non vacation area. The people who run the place are just plain rude, from the deli people to the cashiers to the restockers. If you go here DONT ASK A QUESTION , I was snapped at asking about lettuce. If you dont see it on the shelves they dont have it. The deli sandwiches are fairly sizable. Not too pricey but 20% higher then your local supermarket. It can feed two reasonably. Again, people behind counter can be short with you if you have a question or two. As for meat, this is the only place within 15 miles to get butchered meats. It's a small market with limited space for products. If they were more customer friendly they'd have more customers. I'm inclined to shop elsewhere unless I have to go here. I give them 2 stars because they know they have a monopoly and their attitude reflects it, they have mediocre produce at fairly high prices. read more

This is essentially the only grocery in town, save for a few general stores. But don't worry, because Wellfleet isn't exactly the middle of nowhere. Its residents value how far the town is from the mainland, but this isn't "roughing it." Wellfleet Marketplace is fully stocked, basically a superette. They have a surprising selection of very good and even gourmet foods, especially at the meat counter and the frozen foods. Not a bad wine selection, either. The produce usually isn't so great, however. The prices are VERY high, which isn't a surprise. If you're just picking up ingredients for dinner, I would go here. But if you're buying a whole week's worth of groceries, you might as well drive to the Stop & Shop in Orleans. Whatever you spend on gas you'll more than make up for with lower prices. read more

I will not be going back to this store unless I have to. I did not know the glove policy the store had for COVID-19. I passed two workers that looked at me and said nothing when they saw I wasn't wearing gloves. Then some older man working in the back was very nasty telling me I had to "hurry up, hurry up" because the store was closing soon. It's a highly overpriced market that has been very vocal on the Facebook community pages about how "Tourists" are not obeying the rules, I was so turned off from there comments about "washashores" and "tourists" that I decided to boycott giving them any business. Today I softened my stance and called them for a deli sandwich, I asked for the deli the woman who answered the phone said the deli was closed I started to ask a question and she cut me off mid sentence saying We are understaffed sorry and hung up on me. I have a service dog required because of a disability, and I was denied access into this market. One of the female cashiers asked for medical papers or documentation, which many stores do, but with service dogs that is not needed. The American's with Disabilities Act says: "Staff may ask two questions: (1) is the dog a service animal required because of a disability, and (2) what work or task has the dog been trained to perform. Staff cannot ask about the person's disability, require medical documentation, or require a special identification card or training documentation for the dog." I told the staff member this and she still stubbornly refused me access claiming she needed to see papers. Finally I was upset so I left the business and said I would file a report online to make sure people with service dogs after me wouldn't be discriminated against. Immediately after I said this she became visibly distressed and said "oh no please come in, please." Obviously the idea of her getting in trouble was more important than my entering into her business safely. I then proceeded to leave because I felt very unwelcome, with her trying to convince me to come in. I am highly disappointed in how I was treated, and will be pursuing further action. Life as a disabled American with a service dog is hard enough without ignorant and cruel staff making it harder. read more

Great, convenient market right in the heart of the town of Wellfleet. They specialize in local products, they have books and other nice things to make your weekend relaxing. This place survives by taking advantage of tourists who don't want to drive all the way to Orleans or Ptown. I accept that, I understand that I will pay 6$ for frozen waffles and more for borderline rotten vegetables and I prepare for this every summer. I stash away cash just in case I need some 10$ baby wipes and I do it with a smile. I also begrudgingly accept that I will never get a smile from a single employee or any assistance. It has been this way for years. This summer my father in law made the mistake of asking for help finding eggs, why would he make such an egregious error!!!! If only I could have been there! He was having difficulty seeing the eggs and the owner YELLED at him to "hurry up". I am not much of a fighter (tears and witty retorts are more my thing) but I would probably have broken my code to defend my saintly father in law. So you will probably continue to get my business not because you deserve it but because I am lazy and hate to drive to Orleans. This place is absolutely horrible there sandwiches are dry and old and there prices are astronomically high. For 4 sandwiches we spent $34.00 and the bread crumbled to pieces when we ate them.
