Visiting family in Artesia, NM and had dinner at The Wellhead Restaurant & Brewpub in Downtown Artesia. The restaurant is inside an old historic building with a lot of historic photos of the area and original business. We ordered the following: -Spicy mago chicken wings (5/5 stars) -Buffalo chicken wings with homemade sauce (4.5/5 stars) -T-bone steak special (3.8/5 stars). I ordered the steak medium rare and got it very rare. The steak was really tough and mashed potatoes weren't hot enough. I did enjoy the side of jalapeño with green peppers Mac and cheese that was excellent!! For dessert, I ordered the peach cobbler with vanilla ice cream and rate it (3.8/5 stars). The bottom of the pie was not cooked enough and was very doughy. The service was excellent with friendly staff (5/5 stars). If I ate here again, I would order the spicy mango wings with a side of French fries and beer from the pub. Happy Yelping :) read more

Laid back atmosphere with good food for the price. I got the BLAT with grilled chicken; it was a bit dry but I didn't mind it. The sweet potato fries and mac and cheese were delicious; I'm going to be thinking of the mac and cheese until I visit again. My boyfriend's steak bites and mashed potatoes were so good, the gravy was divine! Absolutely terrible experience at The Wellhead Restaurant in Artesia, NM. Our server, Chris, was basically nonexistent.. We never saw him the entire time we were there. We waited about 15 minutes just to get a simple refill, which is ridiculous when you're paying to dine somewhere. Meanwhile, the bussers were the ones actually doing all the work; running food, bringing drinks, and making sure tables were taken care of. Honestly, they carried the entire experience. We ended up tipping the bussers instead because they were the only ones who deserved it. Shoutout to the bussers for doing an amazing job, we definitely recognized who was actually putting in the effort and doing their job right. It's a shame the service from our actual server didn't match even a fraction of their work ethic. read more

We pulled in around 6 on a Friday night. The street outside was pretty much deserted, but the Wellhead was open for business! We headed inside and found the restaurant to be very clean and inviting. The pub part is separate from the main eating area, so you don't have to sit in the bar area, which was good since we wanted more peace to enjoy our conversation. The service was outstanding. We had menus and drinks the moment we sat down and our wait staff (there were several attending to us) were incredibly friendly and awesome! We ordered the bone in ribeye special, which came with green chili potatoes au gratin, asparagus, and green beans. Ordered medium rare, the steaks were perfectly cooked and delicious! Oh, and those green chili potatoes? TO. DIE. FOR. I could have made those my meal and been perfectly happy about it. We will definitely be back! read more

The night before graduation and my son and fiancee wanted to eat and we discovered Wellhead. Very good pub food and some big drinks but I couldn't get over how friendly the staff was. Quick with service and very attentive. One of our corns dip was not warm enough no problem we got a new hot one no questions asked. Excellent find in Artesia! Says they were known for their burgers and I can see why. My dad and I enjoyed the smash burger with crispy bacon. Nice and juicy. Both went with sweet potato fries. Just right cook on them. Ann loved her strawberry pecan salad with an addition of grilled chicken that was super flavorful and juicy. Dad also tried a flight of beers for the first time. Made notes for future visits so I think he is sold on trying brew buns and flights again. Our server, Kimberly, was very attentive and patient explaining how flights work for my dad. There always a few restaurants that are consistently recommended to a person when traveling. This is one. I finally made it for lunch and was sooo pleasantly pleased with my meal. I had the 1pc Blackened Trout with Jalapeño Hush Puppies and Sweet Potato Fries. Everything was cooked to perfection. Along with tender trout, the Jalapeño Hush Puppies were sooo good. I also noticed something I had never seen but heard a lot of rave reviews about: Fried Green Chile Strips with a Queso dipping sauce! We stopped in on a Tuesday evening about 5:45 pm. We were unsure if they were open because there were no outdoor lights on (they have cute signage but maybe it was too early to be lit up??). They have a nice looking menu and so many nice choices - I selected a BLTA sandwich with sweet potato fries and my husband ordered the chicken fried steak with mashed potatoes and we split an order of the Mac n cheese. We did spot "beef tips" on the menu but were nervous because some places serve too fatty meat ... but once we got our food we feel confident that we'll order those next time. Our meals were DELICIOUS! The service was a good pace - not speedy but perfect for a date night. The ambiance was nice and the waitress was very polite. We were so impressed with dinner that although we took some of it home we decided to order a dessert - it was between the peach cobbler and hot fudge brownie - I swear they made it fresh while we waited. I love this place! Great little brew pub with good country, comfort food. Be sure to try the chicken fried steak and the shred red NM style enchiladas with green chile on the side or "Christmas style". Be sure to say to the proprietor Emily as she ensures you'll have great service. I never go through Artesia w/o a stop at the Wellhead. Classic SE NM Permian Basin stop, and remember to be respectful of the Federal Agents being trained at FLETC (Federal Law Enforcement Training Center) as I'm pretty sure every Federal agent that had been trained in the last two dozen years has been to Artesia and most have been to the Wellhead. read more

Start with place was little cold. The service was good, waiting person was attentive. When the food arrived at table, ordered fish and chips plate. Coleslaw was almost not there. I ordered the ribeye medium rare with a loaded baked potato and side salad. My side salad had fishy smelling rotting leaves in it so I sent it back. When the steak arrived it seemed only one side was cooked and the middle was raw. I didn't notice the raw center until after I ate the beans underneath the steak. The potato was so cold that my butter didn't melt. I ate the potato because I hadn't eaten all day but it was kinda slimy from not being freshly made. I have a complicated relationship with the Wellhead. The food, particularly the chicken burrito, is very good and the beer is excellent. The problem is that the service has always been poor, if not prickly. I've previously overlooked the bad service, as the Wellhead is somewhat of a microbrew oasis in southeastern New Mexico. A recent visit after a day of mountain climbing has served to end my affinity for the place. I noticed that the beer was flat, and the staff defensively told me that the keg had just been tapped. My girlfriend's wine was not good, and the manager was obviously unhappy about having to retrieve another bottle. I wanted to order the "brew pub duo" appetizer, which is listed on the menu as "fire roasted salsa, green chile, queso." Three separate items, right? I asked why it was listed as a duo when it contains three items. The manager very rudely informed me that it only comes with two items. Apparently, the second comma in the menu item is a typographical error, as it should read "green chile queso." I pointed out the error to the manager, who gave me a dirty look and turned her back on me. At this point, my girlfriend elected not to tell them that pinot noir was misspelled on the menu as "pinot nori." The manager, who glared at me every few minutes while whispering to other staff members, also had a habit of frequently coughing into her hand and then not sanitizing. When the food did arrive, the salsa lacked flavor and the queso was a cold glob of cheese. I'm afraid that whatever charm the beer and food once held for me is now a thing of the past. The Wellhead has jumped the shark. Thanks for the memories. read more

Gotta up the game here Used to be solid and reliable. Bartender turns away in the middle of an order. Doesn't know what brands are available. When asked she looks only at the well. Floor mgr has to remind her of the drink menu that lists what they carry. Potatoes are literally cool, not even warm. Plate came out faster than it takes to walk to the fridge. Clearly 'warmed up' - not grilled to order. Extra poblano sauce (willing to bet it is Costco's avocado-chile sauce, which is fine) served at room temp...marches the rest of the food I guess. We'll see what digestive issues come up in the next 12 hours. I guess if you do enough business it doesn't matter...unless you don't mind giving tourists a bad impression of your town I hope they step up their game cuz I've been coming here for close to 15 years read more

We were charged $8 for a shot of vodka to make the drink stronger. Catch is the drink cost $8 as well... that doesn't sound right at all!!!
