Bakeshop of my dreams!! This truly tiny bakeshop was super close by where I was staying in Downtown Charleston (the Moxy) and I'm so glad it was. I discovered it on Yelp when I was looking for spots to stop by before heading to the airport for my flight for a quick bite. There's the tiny bakeshop storefront and right next door is where they do all the baking. I'm noting this because I almost walked into the other spot but thankfully they had a sign on the door saying it was staff only and the bakeshop was right next door. The storefront itself had all the Southern charm, with a classic flower window box at the window and the friendliest staff greeting you as soon as you walked in. I went on a weekday around 8am and it wasn't busy at all. I was able to peruse their AMAZING selection & had the hardest time choosing. Thankfully, I had my uber waiting for me so I had to make quick decisions. I ended up getting a pastel de nata, everything bagel kolache, fig leaf sugar bun, and a dark choco chip cookie (because I always need to try the local cookie). Everything tasted fresh and delicious! I loved the variety in their pastries and was amazed that there were concepts for pastries I've never heard or tried before. Welton's was recommended to me by a friend who lives in Charleston and wow... I am so, so, so, so glad we listened. This ended up being our very last stop before leaving town and it may have just been the best stop of the entire trip. There was a line when we arrived, but it moved quickly, and everyone we encountered from those in line to the employees were incredibly friendly. The bakery itself is absolutely adorable and I immediately found myself wishing I had a bigger suitcase (and a bigger appetite). Deciding what to order was nearly impossible because I wanted at least one of everything. I somehow exercised a tiny bit of self-control in this tiny bakeshop and settled on a breakfast sandwich along with a pastry to go. Both were melt-in-your-mouth delicious. I only wish we had discovered Welton's earlier in our trip because I know we would have gone back at least once... probably twice... okay, maybe every morning. This bakery is an absolute gem! The staff was very welcoming, pastries were delicious, and had a charming seating area. We stopped by around 10:00 a.m. on a Sunday and waited about 30 minutes to order, but the time flew by thanks to the friendly staff, who even offered free samples while everyone was in line. Everything looked so good that we wanted to order one of each, and after tasting everything, we still can't choose a favorite, as it was all incredible! Absolutely LOVE this bakery!! The establishment is adorable. The staff and the rhythm of production-service seems so efficient. I could have bought one if everything but refrained. However every single pastry we tried was DELICIOUS. The coffee is great. High quality everything--food, people, atmosphere. Weltons Tiny Bakeshop finished in the top five for a James Beard award for best bakery in the U.S. The name fits as it is in a truly small building however the staff are friendly and the line moves quickly. They do not rush you and help describe the various goodies on display. We were like kids in a candy shop wanting one of everything. While you wait in line, they offer free samples to get you excited about the wonderfulness within. Now I am sharing a lot of photos, but I did not try everything. We were visiting my mother-in-law in the hospital, so we shared with her and visiting family, I will talk about the ones I did try. The chocolate croissant was textbook with a shine on the pastry itself and loads of thin crispy layers and just the right amount of dark chocolate. The Weltons Honey Pie was one of their signature items that they traveled to South America to learn how to make. It reminded me of a light honey flavored cheesecake but denser. The dark chocolate chip cookie will live on in my dreams! Plenty of dark chocolate chips in a thick lightly chewy cookie and sprinkle with sea salt. Oh my! I could eat a dozen easy! Switching to savory we tried the Hot Honey croissant with Soppressata , ricotta and hot honey. Like all their croissants it was super crispy and flaky and reminded me of an Italian sandwich. A great choice if you aren't wanting sweet. But for my wife and I our favorite was the blueberry kolache. Loaded with blueberries and a brown sugar cornmeal crumb it simple melted in our mouths. Welton's Tiny Bakeshop is reportedly one of the top 5 bakeries in the country, so of course we had to check it out--and wow, it did not disappoint! The weekend line stretched out the door and around the corner, but every second was worth it. The strawberry cream danish was the star: light, refreshing, with a pastry that was fluffy, crispy, and soft all at once. The chocolate cookie packed rich flavor with dark chocolate chips--absolute perfection. The iced chai latte was just as delicious. On top of all that, the staff is so friendly and genuinely excited to serve everyone, which made the experience even better. A tiny bakeshop just as its name suggests. There were few seats inside; most seats and tables were spread outside. Despite its size, the spot had a good number of visitors/customers. Staff had nice attitude, but food and service were mediocre, if not poor. The biggest problem was that at noon they were running out of lots of items on the menu: I first ordered focaccia, sold out. Then breakfast sandwich, sold out. Then Mulffaletta, sold out. Then breakfast plate; the sourdough in it was sold out. I ended up sharing the Mulffaletta with another customer (who offered to share it with me, thanks a lot!!). For Pastel de Nata, I ask them to heat it but they forgot to do so. Moreover, this $3.5 pastry was really really tiny, despite that it was delicious. I also ordered the butter bean salad, but it tasted cheap. In short, I do not recommend it if you want to get some interesting or good cafe food. read more

There is a great reason that Weltons Tiny Bakeshop has long lines outside the door. The coffee is outstanding and the baked goods are just delicious. The only problem with this establishment is the horrendous task of trying to find parking in this area of town. I think I circled for about 15 minutes, the many one way systems did not help either. However, it was well worth the challenge. The staff are great, fast & courteous. The lines go by very fast. There is a tiny section outside with a few chairs tables between the two buildings to sit & drink your coffee. Also inside a tiny high bar to sit & enjoy your coffee. But overall this is a takeaway coffee spot. No lingering with the phone or computer for hours here. Definitely check it out. read more

Welton's Tiny Bakeshop is one of those places you immediately wish was closer to home. We tried several items, and every single one was outstanding but the Basque Cheesecake deserves its own moment. Hands down one of the most incredible desserts I've ever had. Perfectly creamy, deeply flavorful, and somehow rich without being heavy. I'll genuinely be dreaming about that cheesecake for a long time. We also had the Lemon Cloud Cookie (light, bright, and perfectly balanced), a Cinnamon Roll that was soft, gooey, and comforting in all the right ways, and another pastry I sadly didn't catch the name of -- but it was just as impressive. To top it off, the drinks were fantastic: an iced croissant latte (so unique and delicious) and an eggnog latte that tasted like the holidays in a cup. This place is absolutely outstanding. I used to live in CHS and I enjoy trying some new spots when I come back. I found this spot on YELP and came here twice on my Charleston stay it was so good. Everything we tried was amazing. I read there can be long lines so to come early. We arrived a little after 8am on the weekends and there was a steady flow of traffic but the line didn't really start until 9am. Even so, it seemed to move quick! I gravitate toward more savory items- and I obviously enjoyed these more. My three favorites were the breakfast biscuit, the salami hot honey croissant (not sure the true name) and the seasonal focaccia. I wasn't aware they were James Beard nominated, but it makes sense because the line grew quickly! Despite the line, there were staff passing out samples and menus to help us decide. Incredibly delicious pastries! The bear claw with almond and cherries was very moist and had a strong cherry liqueur-flavored frangipane. The kouign amann was perfectly flaky with a caramel crust and subtle cardamom notes. My favorite was the orange creamsicle danish with tangy curd and cream cheese. I was so thrilled when I discovered they had my favorite pistachio milk!! First time I've ever seen it in a coffee shop in the Carolinas. And the draft salted pistachio iced latte was superb! The service was honestly the friendliest of my life. If you like chocolate chip cookies that are more bready then you should try it. You could really taste the dark chocolate which I appreciated, but I did feel like it was lacking on some flavor. The cake slice had a nice flavor, but could've been more moist. I do want to go back to try the morning pastries but I don't think I'd get either of these again. This is a must try when visiting Charelston. Cute and tiny Bakeshop where there's a line forming and I can see why. Fresh baked goodies packed with great and some unique flavors. Get there early before they run out of the staples like their breakfast sandwich. I order the pistachio latte which was easily a 10 out of 10. Since the breakfast sandwich was sold out and it would be an hour before the next batch was ready, I ordered the breakfast plate and that was good enough to get my palate going for the adventure that awaited for the remainder of the day. Stopped by at this tiny bakedshop because it said that they have sourdough croissant and I have to try it! The place is tiny like the name and it filled up with people so fast. Their pastries selection were many and the girl behind the counter were good explaining about some of the pastries that looked interesting. I ordered iced salted pistachio latte which was so good and their bourbon praline croissant that made with sourdough which was not dissapointed! I also ordered the sweet danish pastry that also made with sourdough discard. They dont have indoor seating, cue the name tiny bakeshop. However, they have outdoor seating with plenty of seats and a bin to put your cups and plates. Staples that never fail: pasteis de nata, lemon cloud cookie, pistachio latte, breakfast biscuit, and the muffleta. Need a quick gift for a foodie in your life? You can also choose from a small curation of wines, tinned fish, upscale condiments, and accoutrements. There's a small outdoor seating area, but you can always just bring your food to Hampton Park or Sullivan's and enjoy with a little more scenery. Couldn't recommend more! 5 star Friday, and support local too! After a business meeting on King, I was encouraged by the person I was meeting with to check out the bakery. I had no idea what to expect except for the shop to be tiny! And it is! After asking some questions and looking over the selections for the day, I opted to get one savory and one sweet. Both were delicious. Amazingly crispy and buttery and airy dough for both. The sweet option had a beautiful orange flavor and that crispy sugar that you have to love. We lucked up and found parking close. But depending on time of day it is King street parking is first come first serve. The bakeshop is tiny. It has such personality and warmth. The staff is friendly. They can answer your questions about the menu. The pistachio croissants are epic! Yes, that is the correct term to describe them. I got a sandwich on their focaccia and the soup of the day. The tomato veggie soup was brimming with flavor. The focaccia was delicious. I also got their special drink of the day with pistachio milk. It was incredibly refreshing to have a drink special that was non diary! There is seating outside in the alley next to the bakery. They have made it as cozy as possible. I heard a lot about Welton's so was excited to come and check out the pastries. There is only street parking, but service is quick so you can get away with parking somewhere quickly and leaving. I got there around 8:50am on a Monday morning and there was a small line inside, but they move quickly. The bakeshop is small (like the name implies) but the inside is cute. The case was stacked with delicious-looking, fresh sweet and savory pastries. The cashier was nice. I got a hot honey danish and a toasted honey matcha. The danish itself is flaky, flavorful, and delicious. I'm always excited about a place that has good savory pastries! However, I wouldn't get the matcha again. For $7, it was small and watery. The toasted honey added a good flavor, but it doesn't seem like they use good matcha powder / enough of the matcha powder for it to have any prominent flavor in the drink. I'll definitely come back to try the other pastries they have in rotation. Wish I was a coffee drinker so I can try the salted pistachio latte, but maybe another time! read more

First time trying Weltons and it was good but I would want to go back and try other items on the menu. My partner and I ordered two almond strawberry croissants, strawberry galette, strawberry and cream danish, lemon cloud cookie and spring onion and mushroom foccacia. Our favorite items were the danish and focaccia, both of which we would get again. The most disappointing item was the almond strawberry croissant; there wasn't much filling, which made the croissant drier than we wanted, especially with the all of the toasted almond clusters on top. I especially loved the custard egg cups and array of croissants and other items filled with seasonal deliciousness. So many sweet and savory options. I had been looking forward to stopping by here for months as I was flying to Charleston for vacation. Wednesday AM- 7:59 am, one person waiting ahead of me for them to open. Customer service was friendly! They have a cute little wall to the left which shelves of some of their products that they use with their baking, wine, savory, canned goods (octopus pate or spiced mackerel paste anyone?), home goods... it is a small shop, yet packs a lot of personality in their space- welcoming, homey, and rustic with a touch of tradition and heart. I grabbed a savory biscuit breakfast sandwhich with egg, cheese and ham for my husband- and about a 1/3 of their menu to-go for me! I'm from south Florida, so I am familiar with Portuguese custard egg tarts. I thought that their pastel de nata would taste similar- but it is completely different, and for the better! The most DELICIOUS egg custard tart I've ever had. The pastry had a nice wash on the outside making it sweet and crisp as you bit into it. The custard to pastry ratio was perfect- one did not overpower the flavor of the other. A softest touch of cinnamon and warmth as you eat it. The filling not too heavy. The Cardamom Sugar Kouign-Amann had a similar texture as a croissant. The cardamom flavor comes from a sprinkling of it on top mixed in with the cinnamon sugar. The maple bourbon pecan croissant was rich! The outside crunch of the croissant and fluffy perfectly layered buttery croissant filled with chopped pecan, sweet bourbon and maple could be a meal on its own. I always like to comment on the filling to pastry ratio, and this also had a very nice equality between rich filling and light chew from croissant. Now, I am never a consumer of savory pastries. However, I wanted to cut the sweetness of pastries with some salt. The pastry- my GOODNESS I could eat three of these. The sopresetta had a perfect crisp to it with the inner folds of it still soft and chewy. The spice of the hot honey and meat with the sweetness of the pastry and herbs with fluffy ricotta hits all the senses. Definitely not heavy on the stomach, yet filling. The honey pie with buttermilk whip and crushed pistachios on top- surprisingly not too sweet. On a scale of 0-10, with 0 being a slice of bread and 10 being ice cream, I would rate the sweetness a 5. Imagine if buttermilk pie, flan, and cheesecake had a baby. Upon biting into it, you taste a tad of tartness, just the lightest touch, followed by a richness of egg with a mouth coating feel of dessert, ending with an aftertaste of honey. It eggs you on to take another bite to truly enjoy this special treat. Lastly, the lemon almond cookie. I am pro-almond anything! Lattes, cakes, cookies..it is chewy, moist, and just the nicest shell on the outside. The lemon flavor does NOT have an artificial off putting flavor- it tastes airy, delicate and compliments the almond, leaving a refreshing aftertaste.
