The interior of this place is nice and casual. I would guess there is total seating for 45-60 people. The service was great. The food was very good and very authentic. The only downside for me was they were out of the beer I had originally wanted/asked for, but they have plenty of other beers to choose from. Food was very good, adequate portions and a clean, friendly atmosphere. German background music was a plus! I had the pork loin dinner, while my husband had the beef brisket dinner. Both were freshly prepared and quite tasty. The sauerkraut balls appetizer was surprisingly delicious. My only suggestion would be for there to be a selection of mustards available to complement the food. When I think germain food, I think mustard and beer as accompaniments. read more

I have been to Germany several times in the past, and this was very close to the types of meals I have eaten over there. The Rotkhol was very good, and the Currywurst was good also. Just ok, I don't understand the hype for the sauerkraut balls at all, they have a really mealy texture. the meats were good, but they need to improve the sides. and they won't give you a sample of the beers on tap either. Probably won't be back. read more

I had the jäger schnitzel and it was soooo good. Only $12 which is pretty crazy for Anchorage. Entrees are better value than the appetizers (we got pretzels $8 and sauerkraut balls $8 and both were ok but not great). Good prices for beer too. Will definitely be back. read more

Wonderful tender pork with delicous sauces. It doesn't matter which entre you order it is all good. A party of 5 we all had different meals & a taste of all three appies. The sauerkraut balls were my favorite. The service was excelent & personal. German beer list is a little limited but this a rather small restaurant & forgivable. Finally had the opportunity to try West Berlin, after hearing some about it & hearing the Beermeister Dude left due to not being paid or something, .... He posted THAT on FB & w/in a day it was pulled. Went for a late lunch w/a friend last week, first time for us both, and was not very impressed - I sorry to say. Had the Berliner Special - Curry Wurst & Fries. I've HAD curry wurst during my visit to Berlin and .... not the same at all. The fries were much like fries at other eateries. My friend had something that came with German potato salad. My mother is 100% German, so I've had my share of German potato salad, .... again, not very impressed with West Berlin's version of it. Not sure if I'll give the place another go or not. There are a lot of places in town to chose from, for sure. Wish we had a better German place. Maybe this will get better. Who knows .... read more

Have eaten at the West Berlin twice since they opened. First time was for lunch right after the write up in the ADN. Second time was for dinner last week. I'm happy to say the quality of the food did not change. Fact is the only thing that changed was the terrible paint inside the dining area since they opened. New paint is much better. West Berlin is nothing fancy. Don't expect table cloths or a hostess. What you can expect is good German comfort food and a decent selection of imported beer. Jagger schnitzel is great. Son loved the pretzel sandwich (especially the pretzel). Wife ordered pommes frites with a side of the Jagger schnitzel gravy. Mind you, these are not real pommes frites. Just American frozen fries. Dipped in the gravy they are excellent. Mind you it's all about the gravy not the fries. Anyway, Good comfort food at a reasonable price. Get West Berlin a try. I'm not a German food expert, but I do eat food on the regular so I think I'm a little reputable. The service was slow considering it wasn't that busy when we went. And the food was underwhelming and lacked freshness. It tasted like something I could've bought the ingredients for at Carrs and warmed up in a microwave. My wife & I tried here, on a whim & were really glad we did. We're not really beer drinkers, but even so, the food was really good. I got the sauerbraten & my wife had the Snitzler... What a great place! This is worth the drive up to Mt. View. Wait staff is quirky as all get out but hey, this is Anchorage. Pretzel bread is awesome and limited menu has enough choices so you will find something to try. The sandwiches are delicious. Love having authentic German food in town again. I am a big fan of German food, I always think I must have been German in my past life, I have always driven German cars, my favorite beers are German and even some of my favorite white wines are German Reislings. I have been to plenty German restaurants in my life, some of the best for that matter on the East coast, from Washington DC to food served at the German Embassy. With that said, West Berlin deliver the flavor of the home country. Large portions and great choices. The snitzel is absolutely delicious as well as the pretzel. They have an array of different German beers either on tap or bottled. I had a great experience other than the extreme wait to get service even once seated. It is like they forgot about our table altogether. No water, no utensils, not even a hello or a menu. The service was extremely discombobulated. Finally we got someone to come get our order, because I went to get them. After that we were ok. If you are willing to deal with the service and want awesome German flavors this is your place. BTW the parking lot is not bad at all, as some other reviewers may insinuate. read more

He told us all about the way they make the menu items, their beer selection, and about his time in Germany. It's on the other end of town from us, but we will definitely be returning frequently. This restaurant is delicious!!! I had the curry sausage sauerkraut snd potatoes and every bite was yummy. I also ordered the potato pancake and this was also delicious BUT the reason for only 2 stars was because the front of house can't keep up with the back of the house. We waited 25 minutes for a table (which I don't mind) but there are no chairs or anything so you are literally just standing there when we got seated we didn't get menus for another 10 or 15 minutes (and me and my friend had to share a menu, we were never brought a second menu) and we were never offered water or to put in a drink order (really decent beer selection is a Plus) also there was no silverware on the table, when our food came we had to ask for utensils. I ordered a beer and a side salad which I never received. So if you plan on eating here during a busy night like Saturday be prepared for terrible service but delicious food!! I will def eat here again but prob on a slower night. This place would be better w a busser, food runner, and another waitstaff. Hope they work the kinks out because the food is great!! If the service was better this would have been 5 stars. read more

Great Bier selection. Had sauerkraut balls ( could use more kraut), and Kartofelpueffer (Amazing), for apps. Rahmkreme schnitzels for dinner, very good. Need to work on the kraut to spice it up, rottkraut and spaetzle were also very good. Will be back on my next trip here read more

I saw a flyer for West Berlin and wanted to try it. Having dined at other German restaurants in other states, I like it. I love different ethnic foods of all varieties, Anchorage has plenty of Italian, Mexican, Chinese/Korean, Japanese/Sushi, Island, Pho, but not much else outside of these. There used to be a German restaurant in Eagle River in the late 80s. Anyway, the restaurant was a real pleasure. The layout, the pictures, the music (I found myself enjoying it despite my limited High School German from over 30 years ago), and the food. I had the potato pancakes which were fantastic, followed by a Schnitzel sandwich - also fantastic. I tasted the kartoffelsalat, but was a little to full to finish it. The food was delicious, unfortunately the service was terrible. We had 7pm reservations which nobody there seemed to be aware of. 35 minutes to get drinks (the appetizers arrived first!). The table was never set, they forgot the birthday girl's entree', never checked back on us and we had to hunt down a waiter for the check.
