Back for a visit in my ol' stomping grounds from Vegas (BTW, what the heck happened to N. Lombard Blvd? Ouch!) Dropped the wife off across the street to check out the Goodwill and saw this place. Most reviews were positive and how can I turn down a diner proposition? Entered the spot. Quiet and good music playing. Clean. It seems it gets some traffic, even for a Monday. Service was a little slow at first but less than 5 minutes. Ordered the Meat Lovers Skillet, Rye bread, eggs over medium, and some country gravy on top. The end product came with eggs slightly over cooked and the gravy was poured...somewhere in the middle of the meal and almost not enough as opposed to on top which I thought was weird. At any rate, despite those inconstencies, the meal did not disappoint. It was hearty, flavorful, and a lot of it (even for this fat guy)! Everything was well cooked. Highly recommend! Price was reasonable. Honestly, didn't expect to get hit for the full charge for the gravy at $4.25 when added onto the food as opposed to on the side in a cup but it is, what it is. Paid $27 w/ tip. Will come back again if the opportunity presents itself.....hopefully, it will be around then. 4.5 out of 5, solid! read more

With the situation as it is, Portland has experienced the closings of what I would call a normal breakfast place! The likes of a gold standard such as Elmers (a NW born concept) as a quick and easy, dependable place to enjoy classic American egg combos. Even the mediocre and inconsistent Shari's has bitten the dust, Now I like avocado toast, perhaps more than some, but when I want Chicken Fried Steak, hash browns, gravy with poached eggs, avocado toast does not fill that void. As a first time patron, I came in , saw the "please seat yourself " sign and took my window booth. My waitress Michelle, was busy with another table, but she noticed me and was welcoming me in less than who minutes! Her service was flawless! She was born to excel at customer service! After I downed some of my very satisfying drip coffee, I started to take notice of my surroundings and what I saw was a sparkling clean restaurant. I believe the floors are cleaner than some other restaurants tables. Yes that clean! Shortly, my food arrived and the cook absolutely nailed everything on the plate. In my opinion, having owned a few restaurants in a previous life, this place should be full of happy people eating their meals. The exterior is a little dark and perhaps easy to go unnoticed but perhaps a couple two tops with colorful umbrellas would get your eye. Plus I love places I can take my dogs. If you take a chance and allow them the opportunity to take care of you, I don't believe you will regret it. Wanted to try something new and I'm so glad we did! Came in on a Saturday, late morning, and there was ample seating and staff was friendly and quick. Pancakes were fluffy and well cooked. Eggs and sausage had good flavor too. Coffee was nicely bitter (some say robust). Kielbasa omelette had lots of fillings! Home fries were delicious ... I kept stealing one off my husband's plate. Open 4 days so far, and we are thrilled at the breakfast menu options and service! Fresh spuds and baked goods, scrambled with meats and veggies and varied cheezes. Relaxing menu, multi-ethnic welcoming people, spacious booths with tall backs, and soft music so you can relax. Free Parking and big windows so you can watch your ride. I'm always happy to have a tasty meal and enough for yummy seconds the next day. Accessible from, tables and restrooms. Family friendly, near a bunch of churches and stores. Tri-Met 72 crosstown bus stops here. And yellow MAX,35,4 and others run nearby. I think for now hours are 8-3. I hope the back bar opens soon, as we love going for Italian food when this was Bandini. We found West Coast by chance, came in just about a half hour before closing. Considered whether we should go elsewhere but were warmly welcomed and told it was no problem, there was plenty of time for us to be served. Michelle was cheerful and helpful, promptly brought our menus and took our order. She recommended the guava grapefruit cider and it was spot on delicious. I had the chicken avocado salad, it was beautifully presented and very tasty. The portion was generous and I got a box to bring about half home for later. My husband ordered a bowl of potato soup that came with a serving of a large breadstick baked with cheese that he enjoyed enough to remark about. His entree was fish and chips, which he said was very good, the tartar sauce looked house made. The ambience was diner chic, lovely wood accents and nice music playing. Real food. All three of us loved our breakfast. Reports were that the French toast was amazing. I can tell you that the eggs were cooked to my perfection (over medium), and the home fries were great. Our waitress was also Just perfect- attentive and friendly without being bothersome. And they've really fixed the place up. The restaurant is adorable, very clean, cute decor. Service was great, our server kept apologizing because she was new but she was so nice. Food was middling, but also it's a new place so still working out the kinks. I had pancakes with bacon & scrambled eggs with cheese. Bacon was way over cooked, but if you like crispy, it's for you. I would pay extra if they swapped the fake butter for real stuff with pancakes and offer more syrup. Coffee was good, I like the giant mugs they give you. My husband had a meat lovers scramble. He did ask for it modified and it had to go back and he still had to pick out green peppers. But he got a discount on it and the server kept apologizing. Would give it a zero if I could. Wasn't even able to try the food so I'm not sure if it's good or not. We came in at 1pm on a Thursday and sat down and a few minutes later our order was taken. We were brought coffee and then sat patiently for 30 minutes waiting for food before our server (who hadn't even checked on us) came up and said "shouldn't be much longer" all while we see others being sat down, order food, proceed to eat their food, and leave. After an hour of sitting and waiting for our order (northwest scramble, and basic breakfast plate) the server comes up and says "I'm so sorry we're a little backed up. It shouldn't be that much longer" we let her know we have somewhere we're having to be and asked how much longer she thought itd be. She responded saying there was still a party or two ahead and she can ask the kitchen. At this point I've been there for over an hour and haven't gotten my food and had barely felt like our existence there was noticed. DO NOT come here if you're hungry. You will be met with outrageous waiting times and leave hungry without receiving any food... Would not and will not ever return. read more

LOVE that there's a basic diner here in Kenton! We stopped by before a day of thrift shopping for a bite, and we're so glad we did! First, and most importantly --- the COFFEE IS AMAZING! Robust but not bitter, full-bodied and aromatic. My friend had a Veggie Skillet that was packed with fresh veggies and lots of cheese, and I had The Basics with hash browns and sausage links. The waitress LAYLA was rude and extremely neglectful. There was a sign that says "sit anywhere" but my gf and I didn't see it, we waited for her to welcome us but LAYLA told us to sit anywhere with an obligated sounding attitude, from what I've read others had nice waiters which I'm jealous of. Only talking to us to take our order w the most dry teenage "I hate it here" attitude then never said a word not a single smile cracked. When our food arrived she slammed our food down no "enjoy" no "let me know if you need anything" just rude silence. The food did take awhile to get there which for what we ordered shouldn't have taken that long but was pretty good I had the BLTA and it was fresh and healthy! My gf had biscuits and gravy which were not bad. I couldn't wait to get out there so I asked for the check, no "coming right up" . Then rude lame LAYLA gave us our check and took it, turned right around and said...you guessed it NOTHING. For being from Cali, where the vast majority of ppl might say we're rude, we were the nicest ppl there!!!! I'd say skip this place you'd have better service from McDonald's down the street than from LAYLA stay away from her goth sour teenage "I hate my life and this job" attitude. We enjoyed our first try of this new venue at breakfast today. First impressions: very clean! Large portions (3-egg omelets), and a good selection of breakfast fare. Home fries were crispy, and there are house-made biscuits among the bread offerings. Everything came hot and fresh. There are lunch burgers, sandwiches, at least one soup and a couple of salads. Friendly, efficient waitstaff. Some Parking on the side, as well as street parking. There is a charge for using a credit card.
