I'd only been to the other West Coast Fish N' Chips, the one in Fresno. I didn't really care for it so I never returned. Today, after reading all the good reviews of the Clovis location, I figured I'd give this location it a chance. I'm glad I did. PROS: +First thing I noticed was that it was not 90+ degrees inside as it had been in the Fresno location. A big improvement there. +It had a dive feel inside but it was clean, just like I like my casual dining experiences. The place was decorated in a somewhat cheap New England fishing motif. It felt like the Long John Silvers of yore (before they were acquired by Yum! and paired in the same building w/ Taco Bells, A&W, Pizza Hut Express and so on). +The older southeast Asian couple who were working were very polite as was the cute ginger behind the counter. Whenever one of them walked within 8ft of my table they asked how everything was and if I needed anything. Definitely an improvement over the 3 rude, bro-ish jocks who were working in the Fresno location. +The fries were okay. 'Okay' makes them about 10x better than the fries at Long John Silvers. +The sampler included one BIG piece of fish, 3 prawns, 3 oysters, 2 scallops in a fries basket. Everything was very fried yet somehow not greasy at all. Everything went well with at least one of the condiments provided (Malt vinegar, tartar, cocktail sauce, ketchup). CONS: The batter was fried to perfection and stuck to the seafood very well but it was a little bland. A minor issue since salt and various condiments were provided (the tartar sauce was especially good). I can't help but feel that in light of this, a bottle of soy sauce might have made the food even better. -Prawns were a little on the small side. They were closer to medium shrimp size. Too bad because they were delicious. The most genuine and relevant endorsement I can give a place is whether or not I would return. I'm sure I'm having lunch there again tomorrow. read more

This was my first time going here and I must say it is amazing the fried zucchini is delicious the crab cake is also delicious the scallops, mmm, I've never tasted anything so good before. The prawns and fish were also good. Im from out of town but i would drive all the way to fresno just for this. I will be back again and would reccomend this place to any and everyone. Very happy I tried this place after reading the reviews! almost went to Long John's. I was hesitant since it was over 95 and I read so many reviews that said it was hot in there...It was totally fine! and the employees could not have been nicer or more professional. We ordered the combo, I had Fish with Shrimp and more shrimp, I could have had my choice of Scallops, clams, or oysters. I only wanted shrimp and fish, oh, I traded my fries for onion rings, VERY HAPPY I did! the onion rings were home made and thin and crispy! just the way I like... the tarter sauce is awesome too! kinda weird I know, but, really is better than most? They had a nice selection of beers. It was 10 bucks for the combo and 3 for a beer, CHEAP! oh and the trade of fries for onion rings .90Cents! yeah, not a hard decision. This place is the best fish and chips place in Fresno. I've been here a couple of times now and the consistency has always been great. They give you a huge piece of fish and they cook it perfectly. I've read on previous yelps that it is "unusually warm" inside and to my experience this is false. I come in with a jacket on and i don't have the need to take it off. The best part about this restaurant is that you can eat their food and you don't feel sluggish and gross like you would after eating from long john silvers. This place is almost a hidden gem for their location. The service is fast and prompt. I like their whimsical sea boat decor and their food most importantly taste great. read more

This is the best Fish and Chips in Clovis This store is not owned by the same folks that own the other West Coast Fish N' Chips store in Fresno. The portions are very large for the price you pay and they are pretty friendly. This has been a staple in the area for many years. read more

The owner (I think) does not listen well. She also does not ask questions to clarify orders. She got our order wrong and then other customers wrong. Showing people the receipt does not make you right, it just means that is what you wrote down. Give in when a customer wants to spend more money, and feels satisfied. I'm pretty sure they're putting crack in their fish and chips and heroin in the tartar sauce. I say that because I swear this is the best fish and chips I've ever had, but I know that can't be true because it's just an unremarkable little place in Clovis. The fish is incredible. I'm not a huge fan of fish, but I'm a giant fan of their fish. I'm actually planning to convert to Catholicism just so I have an excuse to eat there every Friday, or whenever Catholics don't eat meat except fish meat. I'm just lucky I don't live closer because I would have to start buying my clothes from a tent store. And I hate tartar sauce. Freaking HATE it. It's mayonnaise's ugly cousin, and I'd like to see whoever invented mayonnaise get ripped apart by a pack of rabid hyenas. But this tartar sauce is like an angel's fart. It's frikkin magical. I want to steal the recipe so I can slather it on everything I eat for the rest of my life until I'm so fat I need a forklift to haul my fat butt to the refrigerator. And if you really want to have a taste of paradise, try the scallops. 3.5 - 4.0 rating. I had to write a review after reading K.A.R.'s, because I completely agree, although I'd give them at least a half-star more, and the benefit of doubt for a 4 star rating. Everything K.A.R. said is correct: - Pleasantly surprising good seafood (Clovis!?) - Very kitschy seaside decor - Unpleasantly warm! Before I elaborate on the positives, I'll elaborate on the negatives. First of all, yes, the restaurant is very warm and uncomfortable, which for a seafood place (I'm sure you'd all agree) is very unsettling. It's like walking into a sushi restaurant that feels like a sauna (*ahem* Mr. Sushi in Tower District). The restaurant interior is pretty dirty looking and not maintained well. It's obvious the owners don't do a lot of upkeep, and yes -- 'seaside kitsch,' as in very stereotypical and cheesy marine-type decor. If I remember correctly, you'll see shit like boat steering wheels on the walls, cartoon fish, fake fishing nets, etc., etc. It's not that huge of a deal, and creates it's own corny 'charm' I guess -- you get the picture. Anyways, the warmth and uncleanliness is the main reason I always order to-go. However, don't get me wrong people, I'm not saying this place is 'Tijuana jail cell' dirty, so please don't let this stop you from coming here, because overall, i DO recommend this place if you need to satiate a fried seafood fix. The place is just obviously pretty old and worn, like any old, unkempt restaurant. Which leads me to the positives... Bottom line, the food is good. It's not as good as any coastal restaurant you'll go to, but for a seafood place in the middle of fucking CLOVIS -- don't be too picky. I've ordered to-go here several times, and I'm always satisfied, never having a problem. Also, the Asian family that owns this place is very, very nice and sweet. Prices are also 'fair;' not cheap -- but fair and expected for a seafood joint like this. Overall, the first time I came here I was surprised how good and decent the food was, and the fact that it took me so long to even know it existed (It's right on Shaw / Sunnyside where you probably pass by everyday). Yea, the restaurant is not that clean and even has a funky layout, but the charm here rests in the sweet mom-n-pop ownership, kitschy decor, and solid seafood. Had dinner here last night and was pleasantly surprised. I ordered the seafood combo (fish, shrimp, oysters, and scallops) while the man ordered the fish-n-chips. We split a side order of onion rings because we were feeling extra hungry. Everything except the oysters was dipped in golden batter; the oysters were breaded before frying. Our meal came with a tangy cocktail sauce, ranch (never had ranch with fish and chips before, but Okay), ketchup, and a nicely creamy tartar sauce. I only used the tartar sauce with the onion rings because I like my fish-n-chips slathered in salt and vinegar only. Y-u-m. What's keeping West Coast from a four-star rating is two things: 1. the restaurant was uncomfortably warm (the Thermostat near the till read 84 F), and 2. the "chips" were French fries and not actual wedged potatoes (i.e., chips). I wanted fish-n-chips, not fish-n-fries. Oh well. The decor was seaside kitsch. The wait staff were pleasant. The bill was reasonable. The portions were massive. The smell of the grease filled the car when we got in with our take out. We got home and unloaded it. The fries were overcooked and inedible. The breading on the fish was greasy. Some weird brown stuff came out of my malt vinegar onto my fish. I just broke that piece off. I proceeded to take off all the breading. At least the fish was edible. Red caboose was much better. I don't know what it is with Fresno and Clovis their standards must just be really low. I'm from the Bay Area. If for some reason we got served a bad meal, shame on you. You lose customers that way. This is no San Francisco pier Fish & chips but its the best in town! They have ur standard London style fish & chips along with clams trips, prawns, oysters, scallops, calamari...and so forth. This was my first time at this restaurant though I had been eyeing the place for a long while. On a whim, my girlfriend and I dropped in on Monday to try them out and ordered our food to go. At first, I thought the prices seemed fair, but when we got home and I realized the sheer size of each piece of fish, I was quite impressed. I rarely ever go out to buy fried food but considering this restaurant has been around for ages I decided to try something new. Absolutely no regrets. First thing to note is that the size of their fish are ginormous and I love how they bring sauce bottles to your table. It's a small location with not too many seats inside so I wouldn't go with a group larger than 4. Calamari tasted good but I personally enjoyed the chicken strips better. I've been here a few times so feel like I have a decent idea of the place. The price isn't bad at all, good customer service, good battered fish as well. Their menu says they make their sauces in house. I do like the cocktail and tartar sauce a lot. I usually go with the fried fish and clam strips w fries plate.... its always their "daily special". However today I ordered the fish and scallops plate as well as a side of cole slaw. The cole slaw is good, however it is the sweetest I've ever had. Not a bad thing; worth noting. The scallops had a nice flavor once you get through the breading. Little too much breading in my opinion but will probably order again when I crave it. So overall a great local fish and chip place.
