This place has always been my go to for picking up a reasonably priced American-Chinese takeout meal after work, that we could count on leftovers for many meals afterwards! I could tell immediately that ownership had changed (I haven't gone in awhile I guess!) when I googled up the menu and found a brand spanking new website and online ordering system! Nice!! I noticed there are a couple dishes on the ordering menu that wasn't on the posted viewing menu, and I ordered the Burmese beef curry, which I was excited to see because I love Burmese food but we don't have any place that I know of where I can get it in St. Louis. I also ordered our usuals - cashew chicken, general tso's chicken, beef and green beans. And also a new to me appetizer: fried shrimp (the large shrimp are wrapped in spring roll wrappers and fried, making a crunchy shell that reminds me of shrimp tempura but smooth.) The beef curry was AWESOME, tasted like it had been cooked down for hours, the meat was tender but lean, and there isn't much sauce but it's soooo flavorful that you don't need much to go with rice, I will definitely get it again and look forward to trying some of the other hidden/new specialty items on the menu, like the Wethani pork and thai red curry (maybe these are specialties from new owners' background?). Also it came with a different rice set up - instead of coming with a packed take out box of rice, it came with a styrofoam meal clamshell that had a lot of rice in the big compartment, and fancy carrot and cucumber garnishes in the small compartments. The shrimp appetizer was yummy and crispy, came with a sweet chili dipping sauce. Our usual dishes were fine; the flavor profile has definitely changed a bit, and I might prefer the old version a little, but it's still got really good value for how much you get, you can pick different sizes of portion, and now they provide customization options on the online ordering system. My family had no problems with the slight change in our usual dishes and enjoyed the meal too! All in all, will be looking forward to next time we get takeout from West End Wok, maybe even more than before! read more

A rare Friday night in but salvaged with take-out. My first time eating at West End Wok and I was a little disappointed. They do such a tremendous business for lunch I figured it has to be tasty. Wrong. But their prices are reasonable to cheap. I ordered one of the combo plates - the garlic chicken. With a combo plate you get a small spring roll, a crab Rangoon, soup (I chose egg drop) and your food with fried rice. I'm pretty sure the Rangoon and spring roll came out of a box. The egg drop soup was good. My garlic chicken did not have any garlic flavoring and was just so-so. The fried rice was edible. Maybe if I soaked some of the food in soy sauce it would have tasted better but I think some food should stand on its own. This didn't. Would I go back there? Only if I had to. Great restaurant for Chinese take out in the CWE. Called in advance to place an order over the phone, wait was approximately 15 minutes, and food was ready when we arrived. Social distancing observed in the restaurant and to top it off, they actually drop their pens in a cup of hand sanitizer after each client's use. Easy and quick minimal contact pick up. I got the spicy chicken w/ egg drop soup, crab rangoon, eggroll, and white rice. I did not expect the chicken to be as spicy as it was but that was definitely a plus for me! I'm a big fan of spicy food and they did not disappoint. The sides were all about average but still pretty good. Even though it was takeout and we had to drive to our destination, the food was still decently hot and tasted fresh when we finally ate. Overall great process for take out, decent food, and pretty chill staff. Would definitely recommend and will be returning next time I need take out in the CWE. read more

Pure comfort Chinese American. The is the best take-out/sit-in casual Chinese American in the Central West End/near Barnes area. It is so inexpensive (from $5-7 lunches to $7-10 dinner combos or entrees). Do you remember we are in the CWE? Plus, they have a punch card rewards program! It is also sooooo fast. I never feel the need to call in an order b/c it really does only take about 5 minutes for them to prepare it and people are incredibly nice. Service at a Chinese-American establishment? You know on Olive St. this is rare. It is also clean/simple inside if you wanted to sit in. There are several tables and bar stools. As an ABC, I get that once a month craving for Chinese-American from General Tso Chicken to Beef w/Green Beans to Hunan Chicken (ask for it spicy) to Crab Ragoons and Hot n Sour Soup. FYI. I don't love the springrolls - but that is just b/c I'm bias and I prefer lumpia or Southeast Asian ones. This isn't Olive Street - so there is no real authentic Chinese food happening here. Well, this is the FIRST Chinese food store I have been where that hasn't happened! So I was having a drink at Rosie's and saw several people ordering from this place! I heard from everyone that this place was awesome. So, I did my Chinese food place test, and ordered the Special fried rice. OMG, is it AMAZING!!! There are not too many things that I miss about the Central West End. An area that is known for pointing noses to the sky, the CWE has very little to offer in flavor and value. In addition, it's expensive to live and eat there. However, one of the best additions to the CWE has been West End Wok. I am a Chinese snob. I went to school at Missouri State, and my first experiences with Chinese were down there in Springfield, MO. Think what you may, but the best Chinese food that I've had was there. After moving back to St. Louis, I quickly learned that this city doesn't have great Chinese. West End Wok doesn't quite capture my need for sesame chicken or the general, but it's a step forward from the bland, mediocre versions that I've grown accustomed to here. Still, dishes like sesame chicken or General Tso's are pretty much average for the area. What makes West End Wok four stars is the chicken fried rice and its unfried dishes. Once I discovered how tender the regular chicken was, I stopped ordering anything else. My wife prefers the spicy chicken, which again is based with the unbreaded chicken. Also, I like how the fried rice doesn't have any unnecessary ingredients in it, just simple fried rice. The best time to order from WEW is at before four, that's when the lunch specials end. Six of us had Chinese delivery from West End Wok (WEW) tonight. We enjoyed our meal; my friends rated it about four of five stars, claiming it to be better than Hon's Wok, but I'm not so certain, hence the three. WEW's primary offering is combination specials. For about $5.50 for lunch or $7.50 for dinner, you can have a plate of anything from kung pao chicken to hot braised shrimp, soup (egg drop or hot and sour), crab rangoon, and an egg roll. Take-out combos are served in a white segmented styrofoam container common to many Chinese restaurants. If you want a full-size order, it'll run you $2.00 on top of the dinner combination price; I don't know how much food this is, but a combo is just right -- or perhaps a little too much -- for one person's meal. The food was generally good. Our favorites were the beef and broccoli, with crisp, green broccoli; the empress chicken, small bites but flavorful; and the general tsao's shrimp, oversized monsters in tangy sauce. One big detractor from the meal, though, was the sauce that came with the sweet and sour chicken: It tasted like blood! It had a great flavor for a few seconds after each bite, then suddenly turned bad -- all six of us were in consensus that that wasn't how sweet and sour sauce should taste. Avoid this dish here. To compare WEW with Hon's Wok a block away, I'd say that Hon's really knocks the "unhealthy" stuff out of the park in a way WEW didn't demonstrate tonight. Hon's will also deliver for orders over $10, while WEW only does $15 plus. However, if you're looking for something fresh, healthier, and new, WEW might be your place. The bottom line for me personally: With a group, I'd go to West End Wok, but I think I'll still be going to Hon's solo. read more

My initial infatuation with West End Wok that began when they opened last December has since cooled. My recent meals mimic M.L.'s review almost identically. The portion size, which was once very generous and made their pricing a great deal, is now skimpy. The last dinner combo I ordered was less than half the size of what it once was. I've stopped ordering the egg drop soup, because the last time I did I'm pretty sure there was a cooked chicken fetus in it. What make this unfortunate is that the food is still pretty good. By default, it's still the best Chinese in the CWE. The nice family that owns it is always there when I come to get my takeout, and it makes me a bit sad to see a locally owned business go down in quality. I placed an order through grub hub last night for myself and my colleagues. The driver marked the order as delivered; however we did not receive the order. I called the restaurant just to make sure the order had been picked up and the owner assured me it had been picked up. We chatted about the situation amicably and he shared that some delivery drivers keep the food for themselves, yet mark it as delivered. He was very apologetic for the issue and I assured him we weren't upset with him and that's just a risk with delivery services. The restaurant was close to closing by this time, and the owner offered to remake our food and bring it to us. I was shocked by this kindness and the food was delicious-as always.
