I had not been to West Lake in a long time. What a waste of time and money. The Kung Pao Chicken was very lacking in flavor and had only a few pieces of chicken. It was not prepared with the correct ingredients. The vegetable fried rice had very few vegetables - a few peas and carrots, and a very small amount of cabbage and bean sprouts. Lacking in any seasoning whatsoever. I will not be returning. The only reason that I got food there in the first place is because I happened to be nearby. read more

I live over an hour away. I ordered a chicken fried rice,which comes with bean sprouts and a few scallions and regular onions. I requested extra bean sprouts, extra chicken and scallion. I got all the way home and there were NO bean sprouts at all, no scallions, and barely any regular onions. I called and spoke to a kind young man. I explained my dilema...this is not what is in the original dish. Forget about the extra items. A woman got on the phone and said, "well I can give you your .50 back" . the good first: the garlic broccoli was good the bad: Singapore noodles if you don't know how it should taste maybe you will like it. But I do know how it should taste and it was only a 2 star dish. the boneless bar-b-q spare ribs, 2 star. hard, not tender and just not how it should taste. It had a ton of the fake red sauce over it too. not even bar-b-q just baked and tossed with red sauce. this is good for people who don't really know how Chinese food should kind of taste. West Lake Chinese Restaurant is great for a quick meal in or take out. The food is pretty standard Richmond Chinese fare. I stopped in for lunch. The lunch combos only include a main dish and fried rice (you can specify steamed), but they're cheap enough that you can add soup or an egg or spring roll for the price of a lunch combo elsewhere. The rest of the menu includes both small and large sizes, so you can get a "small" of almost anything that's pretty cheap too. The decor isn't much. There are pictures of food hanging above the counter and the restaurant is filled with booths that I'd bet were there when the owner bought the restaurant. It was pretty busy around 12:30. I started with a bowl of egg drop soup ($1.25). The soup arrived piping hot, thick, filled with egg and very tasty. Better than some places where it's either too watered down, too slimy or just luke warm. It came with crispy noodles that came out warm as if they were actually freshly made. Pretty cool. For my main course I got the lunch Hunan Chicken ($4.25). I often skip chicken at cheap Chinese restaurants because the texture is odd. I think this may be because the chicken is poached, I'm just not a huge fan. Here. they didn't have bean curd on the menu, so I decided to be brave. Good thing I did. The chicken was well cooked and tender. It was served in a brown sauce that wasn't super spicy. The dish also contained broccoli, onions, bok choy, carrots and water chestnuts. I would definitely order it again. It was well flavored and not too heavy. I usually get steamed rice, but I forgot to specify, and I was pleased to see the fried rice was delicately flavored and not too overpowering or greasy. It ended up being a nice change from steamed. All in all, this wasn't my favorite restaurant, but everything came out hot and freshly prepared. The flavors were good, and it was cheap! My entire meal with a soda was about $7. Can't complain for that. There was only one server for the entire restaurant at lunch, so service wasn't the fastest, but I can't complain seeing as one lady had all the tables. read more

Could be the best Chinese food in RVA. Certainly the best I've tried in the 15 years we've been here. West Lake has been in the same location, serving superb food, for at least those 15 years. I had to lower the star rating. 1) I found many superior and cheaper Chinese restaurants around Richmond 2) I experience more items from the menu on four subsequent visits - all with equally or more disappointing results 3) The discovery of exceptionally awful items on the menu 4) The dismal decor of the restaurant - once you stop squinting at the frozen flavor of the vegetables you open your eyes to an equally unappealing sun faded and cluttered restaurant 5) Like a gas station - only fuel up here because of the location, otherwise you are into poorly cooked flavorless food or you have friends that you are too polite to correct I don't want to trash this place and make you think you will get sick if you eat here. I want to make it clear - the food is adequate and I have no reason to believe it is contaminated. That being said the food is also free of flavor. West Lake has been around now for a number of years. I use to go a lot years ago, however I will go out of my way not to go there if possible. I feel like they want you to come in, but DO NOT bother us once the food is served. What really bothers me is, the attitude which comes from the female owner who serves the food. There is NEVER a thank you for coming into the place after you pay her. In addition, they put little rice down on the plate and when I asked for more rice, they charged me an additional $1. I asked why and she said they use a Special Rice. Give me a BREAK! Special Rice.... where did she come up with this? I have never been in a Asian Restaurant where they charged you for extra rice. I guess this means the other Asian Restaurants around town are not using the Special Rice... This did not happen just once... it happened twice, as I wanted to see if this was a one time thing. I quite like this American Chinese restaurant. The interior is clean which I like. The food comes in good portion, for a reasonable price. One good thing I noticed is that this is the only American Chinese place in the area that use white meat in their general tao's chicken. The quality is always consistent. read more

This place is the real deal. I have been eating here once or twice a week since November when I moved close by. Their food is always on point. I LOVE General TSO Chicken and these guys have the best around. I have eaten in and carried out and the quality is the same every time. I am really picky when it comes to Chinese food.
