I bought a new anchor windlass and anchor line from West Marine The winless requires you to splice anchor line to anchor chain instead of using shackles When I tried to get Ryan to give me a price on how much to splice my new anchor line to my old anchor chain, he refused, unless I bought more chain from West Marine I had been sent to West Marine by my boat repair shop who said that West Marine on Rosecrans does all their splicing Apparently, because I'm not a business, I get the business! Told us about certain brands and different sounds and value and best bang for the buck plus what is what in regards to pricing! The prices seem reasonable here not sure what to compare to but they seem as if they have decent deals as compared to the internet. The service here is great David helped us right after his break and he went the extra mile also checking for prices and different designs for our sound system. He advised against getting something that would potentially be stolen love that idea also said to get the warranty in case something happens we are covered and protected. This is one of the biggest West Marine's in the country. I've never had any trouble ordering parts or getting advice for a project. They have a good selection of stuff in stock for most projects. They do get busy. My advice is get your supplies in the evening and not try to go in the morning of the day your trying to get your boat chores done. read more

It is really interesting looking through all the reviews for this West Marine. It seems like the vast majority are either 1-star or 5-star. Maybe it's extremely hit or miss here, depending on who's working there at the time of your visit? My visit the other day here was my first to this location. I was happy, as it was much larger and better stocked than the Oceanside location I tried a few days earlier. The selection of items was not as good as I hoped, but it wasn't terrible by any means. I'd rate it a 3 out of 5. The customer service I received was great... 5 out of 5. I wound up speaking with 3 different employees, and ALL were friendly and as helpful as they could possibly be. One of the things I was there to get was a type V pfd. The employee I asked for help with those knew all about the different options and features, and was able to help guide me to the exact right one for what I'll be doing. This is a real nice store and has a lot of inventory (possibly the nicest west Marine I've ever been too), I called before I came in there and asked if they still had the 50% off the orange tag and they said yes...they sure do! So I drove there from their Chula Vista store (I was down there getting some tacos anyways) which barely had any inventory but they did have the 50% off orange tag but nothing in my size unfortunately.....when I got there I was amazed at how much stuff they had but when I was trying stuff on the female worker said it's a great deal, I said definitely cause of the 50% off and she said NO...that sale ended 3 days ago and I told her I just got off the phone with another employee here and they said sale is still on....she said that employee didn't know what he was talking about but no more 50%....price is as marked, that just sucks but it is what it is....employees really need to be informed and that comes from training....from the general mgr to the mgr to the supervisors then so on......I wonder is this the reason practically all west marine stores have a 2 1/2 star or less in California? What made my visit to the West Marine in San Diego unique was a sales associate named David. We had a return (without a receipt and purchased from another W. M. location), which he totally facilitated (by looking up our account), then checked back with us a number of times as we made our way around the store. A few of the items we were looking for were sold out or back ordered, but David was so disappointed for us and apologetic on behalf of W. M. that we honestly felt well taken care of! Well done! The San Diego West Marine is larger than the average store and carried a great variety of boating items. We have shopped here for many years but have never written a review. I have complained about WM not carrying enough boating items. They seem to be carrying more clothing, shoes and other do dads like that. So here's how our shopping foray turned out at the San Diego West Marine. Today, we came in looking for fender line found them. Next, fender hangers sort of check- they had 2 but we wanted 3, winch handle found a great light one (expensive though!) and a hard to find one way valve for a bilge pump (Whale Gulper)- shocking but found it too! Luckily, the San Diego store is great. It's big and even though there is a large clothing/shoe section, it still has the room to carry boating items. Yes, they carry boating items, including some unusual items that really are great to find. The only thing we didn't find was a couple fender hangers that are not essential. We were so happy to find the one way valve which is, literally, a sink or swim item. I just wish all the other WM carried what the San Diego store has! read more

The WORST customer service ever. 2 years ago, I bought their pricey PFD belt for paddleboarding. When I went back the next month to get replacement C20 cartridges, not one of their employees on the floor or the manager could tell me which cartridge to buy nor did they even try to figure it out and acted completely uninterested in helping me. Fast forward, I called twice yesterday to ask about a motorized trailer and both times got put on endless hold until I finally gave up. They completely lack interest in their customers. I have a sailboat down at Harbor Island, and come in to West Marine from time to time, usually when I need something quick for a project, or maybe some foul weather gear or shoes (on sale). I have had the pleasure of being greeted and helped by Tara, who is in my top five customer service people I have had help me in my whole life. She is a pleasure, and I get the impression that she has been around boats a great deal and has some real working knowledge on top of her customer service skills. If you go to West Marine, I hope you are helped by Tara, as it will make your shopping experience a positive one. To the management, I am no fisherman, but she is a keeper! read more

Fail. Management fails to train the staff. Yesterday I filled the tank on my little Infinity for $100 and drove to WM to buy a PFD. The salesperson told me clearly that the PFD was on sale and marked down by 20%. Then he asked me if I had an old PFD that I would like to bring in and for which I could get another $20.00 for the exchange. Cool. In this note, WM refers to "West Marine" not "Waste Management" which is a superb garbage service. Waste Management actually trains and retains good people. Today I drove twenty-six (26) miles to exchange the old PFD and receive the $20. The first checker could not get the computer to work. The second checker worked at it over and over and finally, after 10 to 15 mins. announced that they would not give me the $20 for an exchange. The sale was just for 20%. None of the three (3) employees understood the store policy. One of them caused me to blow a lot of gas out the tailpipe and waste a couple of hours. WM is expensive. WM is not convenient. They closed the more convenient store in Midway. Next time I'll do my shopping on-line at Amazon and compare those prices with a few others. Save gas, order on-line. Forget the bad experiences by forgetting WM. Hey, San Diego Marine Exchange (SDME) is an honest alternative. read more

One star is one to many. Trying to get them to honor their warranties is ridiculous. Bought a RIB from them 7/3 and found it leaking at the plug fitting on 7/4. Showed them a picture of the leak and they don't cover inflatable boats or many other items, which doesn't show in the paper work unless you ask for it. I had the same problem with a failed auto pilot that I bought and extended warranty on. To their credit the clothing is good and a good job on shackles. read more
