Full disclosure: I know nothing about fishing, fishing supplies, or cost. However, with that being said I do know when someone is trying to up-sale you, rip you off, and has poor customer service. Came in today after lunch to have my son's fishing spool replaced. Max was amazing! Friendly, professional, and had great customer service. Note: my son went there last week to have line put on his new reel. He could have tried to up sale me and try to get me to purchase other things but he didn't. He also remembered my son and had nice things to say. I asked him some questions and he seemed very knowledgeable. Fixed the line on my son's reel for free. The store is pretty small and full of supplies. Parking is very limited. As a customer I value service over anything. Definitely, this place deserves NO STARS. 57+ years fishing and this place represents everything that is wrong with fishing everywhere lumped into one place. So let us get started. The replies are fake apologies, "I am sorry you feel that way," gaslighting, "You misunderstood," playing Doctor, "You are crazy," and blaming others; "Yelp" this and that. Wondering if those 5 Star Reviews are even real because the people leaving them have so few, if any other reviews. I can understand having a bad day, week, month, year, but this nonsense decades? I was really disappointed with the customer service here. My partner and I always come here, but this time was different. We were given a timeframe of 8-10 weeks for reel repair, we called to check at 5 weeks and was told it could easily be another 10 weeks. Not a big deal at all! Things happen especially when you overbook yourself, so we opted to pick up our reels and take them to the manufacturer ourselves. From the moment I walked in, I was treated like I was an inconvenience. The woman helping me repeatedly rolled her eyes, interrupted me when I tried to ask questions, and responded in a dismissive, condescending way throughout the interaction. I understand everyone has bad days, but basic courtesy and customer service goes a long way. I came in with no ill intentions or bad feelings about this place at all and left feeling unwelcome. My attempts to lighten the situation were met with coldness. Thankfully, another employee was polite and actually answered my questions but the overall experience was enough that I wouldn't want to come back. I'm not sure if this woman was the manager or in charge (it seemed so) but I hope they have a better day tomorrow and learn to not take things so personally, I'm rooting for yall. I came across this location when my family was in town and we needed a few things to fish at the Shelter Island Pier. This place is tucked away in a small shopping strip, I do think they have their own parking spots, but both times I visited I just parked on the street. The place is insanely small but seems to have everything under the sun and more. I am not that well versed in fishing equipment but I did not believe this shop would not carry what you're looking for. I asked staff for more specific advice/help in helping decide on what I need to purchase, they ended up not helping me but an official Pro staff angler member who happened to be shopping there helped me out. I was a bit disappointed the staff member who noted they were going to help did not. This place though seems to fully staffed each time I was there. I have been to SquidCo before and I thought they had pretty good prices, this shop seems to be a little bit pricier. All I needed before my 7 day trip was some wahoo gear.. these folks at anglers choice got me dialed in. Sent me out with a few wahoo bombs fully rigged, some wire leaders and a DTX minnow fully rigged. Spent a nice chunk but it was worth it because I ended up catching 4 wahoo on the trip. 1 on the troll and 3 on bombs. Great customer service even while they were super busy. Update: Wanted to respond to the owner. I admitted fault in talking on the phone to a fishy friend while picking out gear, while you cannot admit fault to being unnecessarily rude to a loyal customer who chose to support your business. How do you think that makes you look? On the other hand I wasn't just on my phone just to mess around. The following morning I was going out on my boat and coordinating the trip since it was going to start in less than 8 hours. You wanna get mad at me for talking about who gets ice and who gets food for the following day? This owner also treats his employees terribly even though they are consistently more helpful and friendly than he is with the customers. Last time I was here he made it a point to rudely scold his employee that was helping me for being confused on how to rig a kite. I highly recommend Squidco which sits at 5 stars here on Yelp with an outstanding customer centric crew who doesn't treat anyone with disrespect or condescension! You forget the countless times I have come in and made my gear selections within a matter of minutes only to be blown off and not taken seriously just for being a younger angler. I came in once or twice while on the phone but at least ten times choosing exactly what I wanted in under 15 minutes. Obviously you don't care enough to value that or remember that. You make me sound like I'm being indecisive when really the whole misunderstanding came from your employees making a mistake and choosing the wrong reel, before blaming it on me because I was on the phone when asking my friend about the lightest line used for flylining. I didn't once change my mind on what I wanted. You make it sound like I chose a 500 size reel and then said I wanted a 400 size reel when in reality I chose a 400 size reel from the get go after looking at the 500 size reel and clearly saying to your employees it was too big for what I needed it for. If I was such an indecisive customer why would I offer to purchase both, to further support your business, until your friendly employee chose to insist on me not doing that? You scolded me after I got off the phone once your employee politely requested me to stop talking on it and once I recognized the issue at hand. Stop making it sound like I refused to get off the phone when asked. I chose to be the bigger person and not respond to you the way you spoke to me, usually with businesses the owner finds himself doing that in response to the customer LOL. Ask yourself, what did you gain by making it a point to raise your voice at me in your shop in front of all your other customers. Did that feel good? Did you think you set a good example? Your employees had the situation under control until you jumped in with your antics and prejudice. If your employees are doing a better job than you then you should be embarassed. And here you are proving my point EXACTLY. Trying to further write whatever you can to make me look bad in front of potential other customers falsely accusing me of being indecisive and this and that. You're attacking my character and justifying raising your voice at loyal customers. Maybe you were annoyed but your job as a business owner is to have enough emotional intelligence and tolerance to communicate in a productive way. Behavior like that isn't what long term successful businesses run on. I operate a customer focused scaled up software business that makes your business look like a lemonade stand due to running at 10x the scale. Don't hit me with the condescending assumption I have never operated a fast paced business. You just don't know how to scale and fall back in that excuse as a cop out. I would never treat one of my customers, even the annoying ones, the way you do because I choose to treat them with kindness with the understanding that their support is paying my bills & my hobbies. Keep it up Luc, I'm not the only person who has problems with how you choose to talk to your customers. Your 3 star Yelp rating is well deserved. Squidco will slowly win over more and more of your customers with time. The only reason you're still in business is because you have the convenient location. I bought a $1200 Stella that broke on my first outing!!! I brought it to them and their response was to send it out to Shimano under warranty. 7 weeks later with no help from them it's finally back. Their customer service is sooo bad that they bold face lied to me. I asked them to please call shimano and get an ETA on my $1200 Stella, "yeah yeah" is what I basically got with them promising to call but never did. This day and age, thinking your customer base is a bunch of idiots and treating us that way is not a good way to run a business. I'm giving this place two stars because their inventory is solid, otherwise they get a 1-star due to a rude employee. This could have easily been a 5-star experience but not in the cards. Leave your bad attitude at home, it costs you business. Here's the problem... I called to find out if they had a specific reel and the pricing, and the guy on the phone was a complete jerk! When I asked the price, he said that this isn't a 'swap meet' and that 'you don't call a grocery store and ask for the best price on vegetables.' So weird! I've spent thousands at this store in the past and can tell you I won't spend another dime there. So I went two blocks up the street and spent $500 at west marine instead, then to Squidco for the rest of what I needed. I called Squidco first but they didn't have what we needed in stock. The service at Squidco is 5-star and West Marine is great too. Life is too short to be treated poorly. I deserve better and you do too. Not a welcoming place for women or veterans. Good selection on all things finishing, from pliers to stringing your reels all in a very tight space to move around in. I bought two sweet rods and restrung two reels. Unfortunately, the manager was reprimanding two employees while I was waiting to be checked out bc they couldn't figure out how to set up a new customer profile. The manager threatened to take away my military discount on an $800 total spent because I voiced how this was a hostile work environment. Thanks Anglers but no thanks, I won't return again. This place is interesting. On the plus side, they have a good section of lures. Downside, they need more space for the amount of gear that is in there. On a side note, purchased a left handed reel and had it spooled there. I took 6 Reels for top shot, I was very specific how much Mono Top Shot I wanted, get down to 302, hit Kelp Paddy's and all my reels malfunctioned, to much line was put on and Mono was put on to tight, all my reels Bird nested, Called and they refused to accept any responsibility for there material and its install, never saw such anti customer attitude in all my 69 years of fishing, Oh I also bought a 9' Phoenix Rod, what a shame, beware fishermen your better served going to Fishermans Landing, Point Loma or H & M they appreciate your business. read more

This place is truly sardines packed into a can. So much stuff but the selection is quite limited when it comes to baits. It's like a little bit of everything and not a whole lot of it all at the same time. Reel selection seems quite good and I'm sure it's more catered to their fishing style. I'm used to my local store that has a peg of every bait from that manufacturer in every color. I came to purchase a fishing license and they said it's cash only for a license and CC transactions have to be over $10. That shouldn't be a problem for fishermen but I found myself surprisingly lacking in my purchase. I normally walk out of any bait shop with $50 min but my plans were so last minute and it seemed my buddy had all that was needed already so I didn't buy anything. I'm from the east coast so fishing salt is not my forte. I'm sure if you're headed out, they'll have what you need. They also sell Mexico fishing licenses too. I bought a gaff, a net, and a pair of pliers here. I ended up only needing the gaff because my fishing partner had all the other stuff. So when I went to return the two items, I was told I would have to pay a 15% restocking fee. Really?? I could see how this would make sense if they rigged up rods for me, but these items could EASILY be but back on the shelf. Be warned that YOU CANNOT GET 100% when you return anything. I've never been in a store where this is the case. I gave the cashier the choice to either refund me 100%, or I would never be back again. He chose the latter. Too bad, since my family just bought a boat and we will be needing a lot of fishing supplies in the future. Two stars because the guy at the counter was cool. Awesome shop! If you're an angler, you choose Luc's. No need to go anywhere else for the newest and best gear. They've got everything you'd want and the coolest staff. My girlfriend loves joking around with Larry and Minh even though she's tagged them "enablers". But she let me go pretty big for her last month when Luc personally set her up with a shore rig for La Paz. I've been shopping at Anglers Choice for over two decades and it's still the most awesome toy store I've ever been in. And their rewards program is just an added benefit. read more

My wife and kids have been talking about fishing lately. We were driving down Rosecrans and saw this place so we decided to check it out. They are awesome! I know absolutely nothing about fishing, so the guy who helped me walked us through everything. I wish I remembered his name. He recommended a great rod and reel combo, lures and bait. I ended up getting a few extra items and was out of there spending less than $100. They are super friendly and informative. They told us a few spots to go and we ended up at Shelter Island. The best part was that I caught a fish within the first minute, literally! The last two times I've been here I've had to wait over 5 minutes plus to get my things checked out. I purchased a G Loomis GL 2 Rod from anglers choice a while back I would say more than two years the rod has a lifetime warranty and when I purchased the rod I gave them my phone number so that way if I had any issues with this fishing rod they would be able to look it up through my phone number guess what that was a lie I caught a Mako fishing on Labor Day and I brought in the rod and looked up my phone number they told me I never bought anything from this place since 2016 this place is a fraud they do not honor their warranties nor do they help you when you have issues never coming back here again read more

If only there were half a star. I went in late March wanting to buy a reel. Curbside pick up was the only option, which was okay. I called to see if the reel was in stock, then drove there to pay. I enter the shop to boxes blocking the entrance, like a make shift barrier. No issues there. After paying for the reel I remembered hearing about an special on reels for the month of March. Luc asked me if I had gotten an email, which I may have deleted or might not have gotten. But, I referenced IG because I didn't remember. He says no there's no deals on there. Okay, my fault. I probably should have brought it up prior to finalizing the transaction. He looked to be on the fence about giving me a discount. But, would it be that difficult to see if I'm in the system? And apply it, if I'm a return customer? Every time I purchase anything from there my name always comes up in the system. I do spend money and support his shop. Before handing me the reel, he says "No returns, once you touch it you keep it!" Then he drops the box (with the reel inside) on the floor. Smh. It could have been a floor model for all I knew, and been handled many times. The whole interaction seemed a little weird. I understand the state of the world today, but I just spent $260 at your shop. I would like to think you'd be a little more friendly. This isn't my first time shopping here. The service reps are always helpful and friendly, but I never get from the owner. I probably should have asked to return it before I took possession. Customer service is huge factor for me, so I'll be taking my business to OTHER local tackle shops from now on. Addition: As stated, I had no issues with "curbside pick up", or the "barrier". The issue I had was with the interaction with the owner. I don't own a business, but know customer service is what makes a consumer comeback, or never return. Would you agree? If there's a loyalty program that I'm unaware of please explain to me the difference in the POS, and loyalty program. Look me up in the system, and tell me I'm not a part of the program... then ask if I'd like to be added and the discount wouldn't be available now during this purchase, but another deal may come up in the near future.
